The record in detail

Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Life

Record1821
His will, dated 2 August 1821 and probated 22 August 1826, leaves “my Loving wife Sarah Caffey” the quarter section he lived on, the north-west quarter of section 28, township 16, range 18, and for her life the enslaved man Jordan, the enslaved woman Rachael and her son Ems; after her death the land goes to his son Hooper Caffey S848S61
Birth1751
Born 1751, Dorchester County, Maryland, and died 19 August 1826, Montgomery County, Alabama, by a 1923 Sons of the American Revolution application, a compiled lineage paper, which gives his wife as Mary Buchanan, married about 1780 S849; his headstone reads 1751–1826 and the Alabama Journal reported his death S61. An online tree's middle name “Thomas” is on no record read, and its “Cambridge” and “Ramer” come only from compiled indexes and Find a Grave
Burial1752
Two compiled papers agree with his will and headstone. A typescript family chart in the Alabama Surname Files gives John Caffey, born near Cambridge, Dorchester County, Maryland, 1752, married about 1780 Mary Buchanan, died Montgomery County 19 August 1826, with children Henry, Michael, Thomas (born 24 May 1784), John (born 29 September 1786), Charles (born 1788), Hooper (born 1 November 1793) and Nancy S1072. A DAR Lineage Book (page 185, member 116597) says John Caffey (1752–1826), born in Maryland, enlisted in 1776 in the 6th company, Maryland Line, and died at Montgomery, and runs a line through his son William Hooper Caffey (1793–1835) S1073. Evidence: the names, places and death date match the will S848 and headstone S61. Weak: both are late compilations that cite nothing on the page; the children’s birth dates and the war service are unproven, the chart names a Nancy and not the will’s Elizabeth, and the headstone’s 1751 stands against their 1752. Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. In 1840 a Jeremiah Smith, 30 to 39, with a woman in her twenties and a girl under 5, lived in Perry Township, Wood County, Ohio S651. In 1850 he farmed there, 55 acres improved and 25 unimproved, beside the same neighbours S652. Victoria was born in Wood County about 1844, so this fits. Weak or missing: The book is compiled and derivative and the Nebraska entry is an index with no image; no original record (1850 census, probate, guardianship) has been read, and Charles, born about 1846, fits a father who died in October 1845 only if born in 1845 or after his death. Probable
Probably him in 1840: Solomon Cleveland, 30–39, heading a household of six in Diana, Lewis County, New York, with Enoch Cleveland, 50–59, on the line above Probable confirm or correct → S1003. Evidence: his age, a Lewis County home near Lowville, where he married in 1834, and an Enoch next door, the name the book gives his father S822. Weak: 1840 names only the heads and states no relationships. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Probable confirm or correct → The Cleveland genealogy’s p. 728 gives his birth as 1 September 1806 at Poultney, Vermont, the eldest child (no. 5238) in the family of Enoch Cleveland S1316. Evidence: the same number 5238 ties this entry to his death entry on p. 1438, and “aged 39” in October 1845 fits September 1806. Weak or missing: The 1910 marriage is read from the index only; the 1860 page gives initials, a garbled surname and no relationships; our reading of the 1870 page found no man in the house where its index lists Henry, 49; his birth and death are not found; Ella's own link to this record is Probable. Marriage1847
She married Stephen W. Osborn as Martha Jane Hearn in Hamilton County on 31 March 1847. Her father, James H. Hearn, gave his written consent at Cincinnati on 26 March (he now has a card of his own), and the affidavit gives her age as over seventeen Confirmed S1137. Her middle name makes it likely that the Jane, 31, of 1860 is the same woman.
Marriage1870
Stephen’s wife is Jane, 40, in 1870 Confirmed S1148 and Jane, 50, his wife, in 1880 S1149. Her ages run cleanly from the 1847 marriage (over seventeen) and 20 in 1850, which strengthens the case that Martha Jane and Jane are one woman. The 1880 census gives her father’s birthplace as North Carolina and her mother’s as Ohio, a lead on James H. Hearn’s origin.

Evidence: The 1857 Røldal marriage register, read by eye from the image, names Nils Ormsen as the father of the groom Ole Nilsen of Lone, and he stood as a wedding sponsor; the 1875 census (S1285) has him at Lone as 'Ole Nielsens fader', born 1796, with his wife Kari Olsdatter, in a house that also holds Ole's daughter Gyri, born 1870; the Lone farm's baptism and burial entries give 1797 and 1885. Weak or missing: He is Probable because his son's daughter Gyri is not yet proved to be Julia (Lone) Selland; his baptism and burial are matched by name and farm, not by a record naming his son, and the census gives 1796 against the baptism's 1797. What is weak: the entry names no wife and no child, so that this is the groom of 1807 rests on his name, the farm and his age; the Røldal burials before 1856 have not been searched for a second man of the name

Family

Parents1801
Parents: Probable confirm or correct → Mons Torsen and Torbiør Biørnsdatter, cotters with land at Bakkene. The 1801 census, read from the image, enters at Bakkene “Mons Torsen”, 58, huusmand med jord, his wife “Torbiør Biørns Datter”, 50 or 52, and their children “Tor Monsen”, 19 and unmarried, and Biørn, 5 S1694; nineteen years later Tore Monsen is the farmer at Bakkene S76. The Røldal register, read from the images, has the same couple as “Mons og Torbiør Sellands” at the baptisms of a daughter Torbiør in 1791 and of Biørn on 2 July 1796, the farm name Tore bears at his marriage in 1807 S1695. The daughter is probably the “Torbiør Mons Dat: Selland” confirmed at Røldal in 1805, at about fourteen, so the register still styles the family of Bakkene “Selland” four years after the census S1764. A “Torbjør Bakken”, 67, buried on 20 July 1816, is probably his mother S1695. The archive’s index of the 1801 census has no other Tor Monsen in Suldal parish, Røldal included. Tore and his wife were at Bakkene themselves by 1 October 1808, when a daughter of “Tore og Ingeborg Bakkenes” was baptised Torbiør, the name of the wife in the census household, with Thore Botnen as first sponsor, as at the baptisms of 1791 and 1796 S1696. By the census ages Mons was born about 1742–43 and Torbiør about 1749–51. What is weak: only the census names his father; the confirmation list of 1805 and the 1808 entry support the link without naming him; the archive’s index of the Røldal burials from 1817 to 1856 has no Mons Torsen at Bakkene or Selland, so his death is not found; its age puts Tore’s birth about 1781–82, three years later than his age at burial does; the Røldal register has no entries for 1781 to 1789, so his baptism cannot be read there; and the search for a second Tor Monsen was made in the index, not on the census pages
Marriage1807
Husband of Ingebjørg Ormsdatter, married 28 June 1807 at Røldal, by the marriage register read from the image
“Tore Monsen Sælland med Pigen Ingeborg Ormsd.”, followed by an abbreviated farm name that is read as Præstegaarden S1622. She outlived him: she died at Selland on 22 November 1861 and was buried on 29 June 1862 S1623. Father of Tore Toreson Selland
Children1808
Other children at Bakkene: a daughter Torbiør, baptised at Røldal on 1 October 1808, by the register read from the image Probable confirm or correct → S1696. The entry calls the parents “Tore og Ingeborg Bakkenes” without patronymics; that they are this couple rests on the marriage of the year before, the farm and the sponsors. The next Røldal book, read from the images, names both parents with their patronymics: a daughter Ingebor, born 30 June 1817 and baptised 17 August 1817, of “Thore Monss. og Ingebor Ormsd. Bakkene” Confirmed S1698, and a stillborn boy, died 14 April and buried 18 April 1819, of “Thore Monssøn og Ingebor Ormsd. Bakkene” Confirmed S1699. One of the sponsors of 1817 is “Biørn Bakkene”; the entry does not say who he is. Nothing later has been looked for on either daughter

Life

Census1870

Probable
Probably him in 1860: D Stein, 45, a farmer born Germany, in the Cat Spring, New Ulm and Industry precinct of Austin County, with Anna, his wife, 50, born Germany, and children Willie 18, Houston 15, Henry 13 and Phil 11, born Germany, and a girl Paul[ine], 3, born Texas Probable confirm or correct → S1016. Evidence: Henry, 13, fits Henry Stein, 32 in 1880, whose father Dietrick lived with him in Austin County S919, and an age of 45 falls inside his 1812–1820 birth range. Weak: the census gives only the initial D, and names his wife only as Anna. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Research status

Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. In the 1850 census of Claiborne County, Tennessee, read from the image, Joseph Owens, 16, a laborer born in Tennessee, is in the household of C. J. Owens, 40, a wagonmaker born in Tennessee S843. Life

Birth1813
Born about 1813, Kentucky, by her 1850 age S844. An online tree makes her Catherine “Snuffer Sowder”, born 28 March 1818 in Whitley County, died 1896 at Glen Rose, Texas: none of that is on a record read. Sowder households, among them Polly Sowder, 66, lived next door in 1850 S844, which makes Sowder plausible but does not prove it
Census1860
In 1860, probably as Catherine, 43, born Kentucky, she was in A. J. Pardon's household near Sherman, Grayson County, Texas, with M., 18, John, 12, Sarah E., 9, W. J., 6, and Silvester, 2, and with America A., 21, and David A. Seaton Probable confirm or correct → S986. Evidence: M. and America A. fit Manuel and America of 1850 S844. Weak: her age rose only six years in ten, so her birth stays about 1813 by 1850. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

J., 6, and Silvester, 2; America A., 21, and her husband David A. Seaton shared the dwelling Probable confirm or correct → S986. Probable
Probably him in 1840: Jackson Parton, 20–29, in Knox County, Kentucky, with a woman of 20–29 and three girls under 5 Probable confirm or correct → S1006. Evidence: the ages fit him and Catharine, and the three girls fit China, America and Rachael of the 1850 household S844; Whitley County was formed from Knox. Weak: 1840 names only the heads. Elizabeth Parton, 40–49, and Johnathan and William Parton lived nearby and may be his mother and brothers. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
