How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not. The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on 13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information rather than lacking it.
Attested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
Strongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field, or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Searched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Supplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands apart from the three record tags above S24.
Biological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond: no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document was read for it S46.
The person is living. On the charts and in the chains of names a living person appears by name and relationship. A living adult’s full record is on their own card, published with the family’s consent and kept out of search engines. A minor appears by name only. The privacy note at the head of the page gives the rule in full.
A branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

The record in detail
Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Evidence: John Caffey's 1821 will, read from the original Montgomery County will book, names seven children including Charles; in 1850 Charles, 61, lived beside Thomas and Michael, two more of the named sons. Weak or missing: No record pins the will's Charles as this Charles: the will gives no ages or residences, and the 1850 census states no relationships. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Evidence: A 1923 SAR application gives Mary Buchanan as John Caffey Sr.'s wife, married about 1780, within which Charles, born about 1789, would fall. Weak or missing: The SAR papers are compiled and disagree on her death year; by 1821 John's wife was Sarah, so a second wife cannot be ruled out, and the father link is itself only probable. Smith's 1913 marriage return and 1922 death certificate (Jeremiah born New York); the 1860 Leroy, Michigan census with a V., 16, born Ohio, in his home, and the 1870 census with Lucien. Weak or missing: No record names Clifford's father: he was born after the 1850 census, John's Find a Grave list of children omits him, and FamilySearch has nothing naming his parents; the birth date and death date come only from Find a Grave. Evidence: The 1870 census of Winslow, Illinois has a two-person household of Marancy Warner, 46, born New York, and Clifford, 19, born Illinois; she was in John Warner's household at Winslow in 1850. Weak or missing: The 1870 census has no relationship column; Clifford's 1880 entry gives his mother's birthplace as Massachusetts, not New York; the maiden name Alexander rests on an unread index ('Muraney Elexander') and on her son Charles's statement in his 1878 marriage record, and her birth and death dates are unsourced; the 1900 Knox County 'Marancy Ballet(?)', mother-in-law of the widow Mary Warner, has a hard-to-read surname and 'mother of 1 child'. Cleveland's Nebraska marriage names his parents Solomen Cleveland and Mary Thompson. Weak or missing: The book is compiled and derivative and the Nebraska entry is an index with no image; no original record (1850 census, probate, guardianship) has been read, and Charles, born about 1846, fits a father who died in October 1845 only if born in 1845 or after his death. Weak or missing: The 1910 marriage is read from the index only; the 1860 page gives initials, a garbled surname and no relationships; our reading of the 1870 page found no man in the house where its index lists Henry, 49; his birth and death are not found; Ella's own link to this record is Probable. Evidence: The 1857 Røldal marriage register, read by eye from the image, names Lars Nilsen as the father of the bride Siri Larsdatter of Kvamen in Suldal; a Lars Nilsen, 51, born Suldal, owned and farmed Ljone in 1865 with his wife Kristi Østensdatter and their son Østen (S1283), and a widower Lars Nilsen, 23, son of Nils, married Kirsti Østensdatter in Suldal in 1839 (S1284). Evidence: The 1857 Røldal marriage register, read by eye from the image, names Nils Ormsen as the father of the groom Ole Nilsen of Lone, and he stood as a wedding sponsor; the 1875 census (S1285) has him at Lone as 'Ole Nielsens fader', born 1796, with his wife Kari Olsdatter, in a house that also holds Ole's daughter Gyri, born 1870; the Lone farm's baptism and burial entries give 1797 and 1885. Weak or missing: He is Probable because his son's daughter Gyri is not yet proved to be Julia (Lone) Selland; his baptism and burial are matched by name and farm, not by a record naming his son, and the census gives 1796 against the baptism's 1797.
