How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not. The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on 13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information rather than lacking it.
Attested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
Strongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field, or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Searched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Supplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands apart from the three record tags above S24.
Biological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond: no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document was read for it S46.
The person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages, places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
A branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Evidence: The index of his Texas death record names both parents; the index of the 1910 census of Abilene lists Philip in the household of H. and Pauline Schultz; his 1968 obituary calls him a son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schultz and gives his birth on 22 October 1893 and his death on 28 September 1968 at Big Spring (S1744); his mother's 1944 obituary names him (S1718). The evidence is strong. Weak or missing: Every record is an index or machine-read newspaper text, and no image has been read; the birthplace and the burial are in the obituary only; two different names are given for his wife. - S1718Indexes — Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz, born Germany, 24 August 1865; died Abilene, Taylor County, Texas, 7 September 1944. FamilySearch, Find a Grave index (Q243-4DSY); 1910 census index, Abilene Ward 2 (M23Z-F8F); “Texas Deaths” index for her son William J. Schultz, who died at Abilene on 26 March 1972 (K3FC-DBN). Indexes read on 4 October 2026; no image read. Probable Find a Grave: born 24 Aug 1865, died 7 Sep 1944, buried at Abilene. 1910: H. Schultz, wife Pauline, born 1865 in Germany, immigrated 1874, with Otto, Carl, Philip and Minnie. 1972: father Herman Schultz, mother Pauline Betcher. ⚠ Index only: no image has been read, and her own 1944 death certificate has not been found. The 1930 and 1940 census pages that name her are read from the images (S1220, S1221). Serves the card of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz; her son William John Schultz has a card of his own (S1724).
- S1744Indexes and obituary — Philip Schultz, 74, Abilene and Big Spring, Texas, 1968. FamilySearch: Texas death records index (KS1D-HQ2); 1910 census index (M23Z-F8V). Newspapers.com: Abilene Reporter-News, 29 September 1968, pp. 1 and 6 (images 762383479, 762383515). Index and machine-read text read on 5 October 2026; no image read. Probable Death index: Philip Schultz, born in Texas, both parents named. 1910: Philip in the household of H. and Pauline Schultz at Abilene. Obituary: Philip Schultz, 74, died Saturday 28 September 1968 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Big Spring, after a long illness; born 22 October 1893 at Abilene, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schultz of the Schultz Bakery; two years in France in the First World War; grocer with his brother W. J.; St. Paul Methodist Church; married Dorothy Lee Hulsey at Abilene on 11 October 1935; burial at the Oddfellow Cemetery, Abilene. Survivors include his sister Mrs. Minnie Mae Coffman and his brothers W. J. and Carl. ⚠ Index and machine-read text only: no image has been read. Abilene as his birthplace and the burial are in the obituary alone. The 1930 and 1940 censuses list a wife Ethmye; the obituary’s 1935 marriage to Dorothy Lee Hulsey is not reconciled with them, and no marriage record has been read. His children are not named here.
