How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

S158Census1880
🆕 In 1880
Lucinda, 10, born Kentucky, was at school in
Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, with Martha E., 12, and the Arkansas-born Sarah F., 7, and Lydia J., 5, in a household whose head, James Boles, is on the previous page (not read)

Family parents, marriages, children, siblings
Children1888
🆕 Her first child,
William Lacy Carpenter, was born on
29 July 1888 near Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, ten months after her marriage. His delayed birth certificate names his parents as Robert M. Carpenter and Lucinda Bowles, both born in Kentucky
Confirmed S957. It was sworn in 1942 by his aunt, Nannie E. Evans of Wallowa, Oregon. The ages it gives the parents are recollections, and the site keeps her birth in 1870. added 29 September 2026
Marriage1880
🆕 Her husband's family, probably: in 1880 a
Robert, 14, born Kentucky, was a farm laborer in the Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas household of
William and Ala Carpenter, both born Kentucky, with eleven brothers and sisters
Probable confirm or correct → S964. Evidence: his Kentucky birth, his age, the Arkansas home, and a daughter named Ala. What is weak: no record read yet names Robert Marion Carpenter's parents, and the 1880 age runs a year ahead of his November 1866 birth. added 29 September 2026
Children1921
🆕 Her son
Harry Charles Carpenter, 21, a soldier of R.F.D. 1, Phoenix, born at
Prescott, Arizona, married Florence Ethel Snyder at Oswego, New York, on 11 January 1921. The record names his parents as Robert M. Carpenter and
Lucinda Bowles Confirmed S1140. The couple gave their future address as Madison Barracks, an Army post.
Open questions what is probable, weak or missing — confirm or correct it
Probable
🆕 Probably her son:
Harry C. Carpenter, private first class in the 242nd Military Police Company, army no. 2311994, named “Mrs Lucinda Carpenter, mother, Phoenix, Arizona” as the person to notify when his company sailed from Liverpool after the First World War
Probable confirm or correct → S984. Evidence: the surname, a mother named Lucinda, and Phoenix, where she died in 1920
S158. Weak: the list gives no age or birthplace, and no other record read names him as her son. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026

Generation 5 — Earl's great-great-grandparents and their siblings
- S158Arizona Certificate of Death, 1920 — LUCINDA CARPENTER, daughter of James Daniel Bowles, Phoenix, Maricopa County. Ancestry collection 60420, record 600216827. Arizona State Board of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, County Registered No. 9718, Local Registrar's No. 2439. Read from the image at full resolution, 22 September 2026. Lucinda Carpenter, F, White, married; date of birth Feb 27 1870, age 50, occupation Housewife, birthplace Kentucky; NAME OF FATHER: James Bowles; MAIDEN NAME OF MOTHER: Williams; informant R. N. Carpenter; died 28 September 1920, 3:30 p.m., of shock following operation at the Deaconess Hospital, attended from 12 August; buried Greenwood, 30 September 1920; usual residence California, about two years in Arizona. 🔴 THIS IS NOT JAMES DANIEL BOWLES'S DEATH RECORD, AND ANCESTRY'S INDEX MAKES IT LOOK LIKE ONE. The index surfaces the record under Name: James Bowles. On the image he appears in one box only — Name of Father. It must never be cited as his death record; he died in 1889 in Texas. 🔴 A second index error on the same card: "Spouse: Williams Bowles" is not a person. Williams is the maiden-name-of-mother box, a surname with no given name, read by the indexer as a man. 🔑 What the certificate does settle is a daughter, fully. 27 February 1870, born Kentucky locks to the month against Lucinda, 4/12, born within the year — Feb on line 10 of the 1870 Owsley schedule S157. 🔑 And it corroborates Lydia's maiden surname from another state entirely — Arizona, fifty years and two thousand miles from Owsley County, from a family informant. Williams now rests on three independent documents: the 1856 marriage register S143, the 1858 birth register S160 and this. ⚠ WHAT IS REJECTED HERE, AND WHY. The certificate gives Virginia for both of her parents' birthplaces. Both are rejected. James was born in Estill County, Kentucky on his own marriage register S143 and Kentucky on three schedules; Lydia was born in Tennessee on two. The informant was a son-in-law reporting in 1920 on a father-in-law thirty years dead. The likely source of the slip is recoverable and is worth stating: James's OWN parents, Wm A. and Lucy Bowles, WERE born in Virginia S155 — the informant was one generation out, not simply wrong. A death certificate is primary for the death and hearsay for the parents. 🔑 SUPPLEMENT, 22 September 2026 — re-read under the hint filed to the MOTHER, and both parents' Virginia birthplaces adjudicated. Lydia's is wrong too. Three contemporaneous records give her Tennessee — the 1850 Owsley schedule while she was living at home [S173], the 1856 bride's column [S143], and the 1860 Travellers Rest sheet [S171] — and her son's 1936 Texas certificate gives a third answer, Kentucky. Two informants, two different wrong answers, sixty and eighty years on. Tennessee stands; the pattern is the finding. The Virginia is weak sideways corroboration of the Virginia-born generation in [S155] and worthless for either James's or Lydia's own birthplace.
- S957Arkansas delayed certificate of birth no. 166 — William Lacy Carpenter, born near Little Rock, Pulaski County, 29 July 1888 (sworn 27 November 1942, filed 9 January 1943). Ancestry record 300663443. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 24 September 2026. Confirmed Child William Lacy Carpenter, male, born 29 July 1888 at 2 a.m., in the country near Little Rock, Pulaski County. Father Robert M. Carpenter, 24, farmer, born Kentucky; mother Lucinda Bowles, 22, housewife, born Kentucky; no earlier children. Affiant Nannie E. Evans, of Wallowa, Oregon, who gives her relationship as aunt, sworn before a notary at Emmett, Gem County, Idaho. The certificate was made 54 years after the birth, and the parents' ages are recollections. Lucinda's own death certificate and the 1870 census (S158) put her birth in February 1870, not about 1866, and the 1900 census gives Robert's as November 1866; the site keeps both. The index reads the middle name as "Lasy"; the image has Lacy. Lucinda's sister Nancy Ann Bowles married George R. Evans, so the affiant is probably she, but the certificate does not say so. Collection: Arkansas, U.S., Birth Certificates, 1914–1925.
- S9641880 United States Federal Census — Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, ED 104, page 32, dwelling 274 (22 June 1880). Ancestry record 39681260. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 24 September 2026. Confirmed William Carpenter, 41, head, farmer, born Kentucky, parents born Tennessee; Ala, 34, wife, born Kentucky; sons John 17, Robert 14 (farm laborer), Charles D. 12, and daughters Margarett 15, all born Kentucky; Amanda 10, Mary J. 8, Eliza B. 6, Sarah E. 4, Lyllian 2 and Josephine 1, all born Arkansas. The household is read in full. That this Robert is Robert Marion Carpenter, who married Lucinda Bowles in 1887, is Probable: Kentucky birth, age and Arkansas residence fit, and his daughter Ala E. was named for his mother, but no record yet names his parents. Collection: 1880 United States Federal Census.
- S9831880 U.S. census — Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, ED 104, page 25, 16 June 1880, lines 1–4. Ancestry record 6421264. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 28 September 2026. Confirmed A household continued from the previous page: Martha E., 12, and Lucinda, 10, born Kentucky, at school, then Sarah F., 7, and Lydia J., 5, both born Arkansas; all four with parents born Kentucky. The head of the household, James Boles, is on the previous page, which has not been read. Lucinda's age and Kentucky birth fit her birth on 27 February 1870 (S158). The younger girls' Arkansas births place the family's move from Kentucky about 1870–73.
- S984U.S. Army Transport Service passenger list — 242nd Military Police Company, port of embarkation Liverpool, England, sheet 2 (date blank, after the First World War), line 45. Ancestry record 129837644. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 28 September 2026. Probable Harry C. Carpenter, private first class, army no. 2311994; to be notified in emergency: Mrs Lucinda Carpenter, mother, Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix is where Lucinda Bowles Carpenter died on 28 September 1920 (S158), so this is probably her son. The list gives no age or birthplace for him, and no other record read names him as her son.
- S1140City of Oswego, New York, Record of Marriages, p. 853, no. 856 — Harry Charles Carpenter and Florence Ethel Snyder (11 January 1921). Ancestry record 1050051680. Confirmed Licence of 5 January 1921: Harry Charles Carpenter, white, 21, of R.F.D. 1, Phoenix, Arizona, soldier, first marriage, born Prescott, Arizona, father Robert M. Carpenter, mother Lucinda Bowles; Florence Ethel Snyder, 18, of Oswego, candymaker, born Oswego, father Albert Snyder, mother Frances Clark. Married 11 January 1921 at Oswego by Merritt J. Winchester, clergyman; future address Madison Barracks, New York.
