How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: PROBABLE as the parents of
Charles W. Owens Probable confirm or correct →.
Evidence: Charles's 1939 death certificate names his parents as
Joseph Owens and
China Pardon S780; in 1880, aged 17, he lived with his mother
China Owen, 41, a widow born in Kentucky
S798; and
Chiney Parton, 16, of Whitley County, Kentucky, married
Joseph Owens there on
30 January 1852 S810.
What is weak: no one record names Charles with both parents but his death certificate, whose informant was his widow; the register's year is only a ditto mark from the page's one dated row, and a Tennessee compiled index gives the marriage as 30 January
1853 in Claiborne County, Tennessee
S810; and the certificate has both parents born in Arkansas, where the marriage register has Kentucky and the 1880 census Tennessee for Joseph and Kentucky for China
S798. Approved by Earl 27 September 2026.
Evidence: Charles W. Owens's 1939 death certificate names Joseph Owens and China Pardon; in 1880 he lived with his widowed mother China Owen; the Kentucky register records Chiney Parton, 16, marrying Joseph Owens in Whitley County on 30 January 1852 (year by ditto mark). Weak or missing: Only the widow-informed certificate names Charles with both parents; a Tennessee index dates the marriage 1853 in Claiborne County; the certificate's Arkansas birthplaces conflict with the 1880 census. Life in the order the records give it
Death1880
Joseph had died by June 1880, when China was a widow in Williamson County, Texas, with Charles and his brothers and sisters Wm. A. J., Joseph C., Alice, Levi A. and Edgar
S798. Charles was born in Arkansas in March 1863
S780, so the family moved from Kentucky to Arkansas and then to Texas. Joseph's own birth and death are not yet found.
Family parents, marriages, children, siblings
Marriage1852
Married
30 January 1852 (or 1853), Whitley County, Kentucky; she was 16 and he 19, both living in and born in Whitley County, so she was born about 1836 and he about 1833
S810.
Parents1850
🆕 His father: probably
C. J. Owens Probable confirm or correct →. In 1850 Joseph, 16, a laborer born in Tennessee, was in the Claiborne County, Tennessee, household of C. J. Owens, 40, a wagonmaker, and Nancy, 33, with Isaiah V., Gilbert B. and Boston W.
S843. What is weak: the census states no relationships, and no record names C. J. as his father. added 28 September 2026.
Parents1850
🆕 Her parents: probably
Jackson Parton and
Catharine Parton Probable confirm or correct →. In 1850 China, 14, born Kentucky, was in their Whitley County, Kentucky, household with America, Rachael, Manuel, Nancy and William
S844. What is weak: the census states no relationships, and no record names her parents or Catharine's maiden name. added 28 September 2026.

Generation 5 — Kristin's great-great-grandparents
- S780Texas death certificate 71392: Charles W. Owens, died Austin, 6 July 1939. Ancestry record 21891220. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 26 September 2026. Confirmed Charles W. Owens, a produce salesman of 808 Clermont, Austin, born 9 March 1863 in Arkansas, died 6 July 1939; buried at Youngs Prairie, Elgin. Father Joseph Owens, born Arkansas; mother China Pardon, born Arkansas. Informant: his wife. 🆕 The Texas death index agrees: “Owens C. W.”, Travis County, 6 July 1939, certificate 71392 (Ancestry record 6218014, read 27 September 2026). His own certificate, informed by his widow, gives Arkansas, as do the 1900 and 1910 censuses; his daughter Medie's certificate and the 1930 census say Texas. The parents' names are secondhand and the spellings may be Chaney/Chana and Pardue/Purdon; no record of the couple has been read. Collection: Texas, U.S., Death Certificates.
- S7981880 U.S. census, Williamson County, Texas, ED 157, dwelling 29: China Owen household. Ancestry record 11746866. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 27 September 2026. Confirmed China Owen, 41, widow, born Kentucky; her son Charles, 17, born Arkansas, his father born Tennessee; and Charles's brothers and sisters Wm. A. J., 25, a wagoner (with his wife M. Eliza, 21), Joseph C., 15, Alice, 12, Levi A., 10, and Edgar, 5. Taken with China in the house, so its birthplaces for the parents (Tennessee and Kentucky) outweigh the 1939 certificate's “Arkansas” for both (S780). Collection: 1880 United States Federal Census.
- S810Kentucky marriage register, Whitley County: Joseph Owens and Chiney Parton, 30 January 1852. Ancestry record 4192 (roll 994058). Image examined, read 27 September 2026 (image KYVR_994058-0164). Probable Joseph Owens, 19, and Chiney Parton, 16, both single, living in and born in Whitley County, Kentucky, married “Jany 30th”. The year is a ditto mark: the only year on the page is “August 22nd 1852” in the first row, and the rows are out of date order, so the page is a compiled return and the year may be 1853. A Tennessee compiled index (Ancestry record 1034394) has China Parton and Joseph Owens married on 30 January 1853 in Claiborne County, Tennessee, which borders Whitley; the day and month agree, the year does not. Collection: Kentucky, U.S., Marriage Records, 1852–1914.
- S8431850 U.S. census — 9th Subdivision, Claiborne County, Tennessee, dwelling and family 988: C. J. Owens household, enumerated 25 October 1850. Ancestry collection 8054, record 6021837 (image 4191100-00159). Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Probable C J Owens, 40, waggonmaker, born Tennessee; Nancy Owens, 33, born North Carolina; Joseph Owens, 16, laborer; Isaiah V., 11; Gilbert B., 9; Boston W., 7, all born Tennessee. The 1850 census states no relationships. FamilySearch 1:1:MCD4-G6M indexes the same page. Collection: 1850 United States Federal Census.
- S8441850 U.S. census — District No. 2, Whitley County, Kentucky, dwelling and family 410: Jackson Parton household, enumerated 12 September 1850. Ancestry collection 8054, record 17561454 (image 4192512_00169). Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Probable Jackson Parton, 37, farmer, real estate $300; Catharine, 37; China, 14; America, 12; Rachael, 10; Manuel, 8; Nancy, 6; William, 4, all born Kentucky. Sowder households, among them Polly Sowder, 66, are in the next dwellings. The 1850 census states no relationships. FamilySearch 1:1:M655-9K6 indexes the same page. Collection: 1850 United States Federal Census.
