How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not. The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on 13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information rather than lacking it.
Attested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
Strongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field, or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Searched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Supplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands apart from the three record tags above S24.
Biological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond: no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document was read for it S46.
The person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages, places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
A branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Evidence: The 1940 Kauffman-Coffman family book, page 567, gives his birth on 10 November 1908; the index of the 1930 census lists him in the household of his father, Joseph Franklin Coffman; the California Death Index gives the same date of birth, his death on 24 June 1990 in San Diego County and his mother's maiden name as Stanley; the Social Security Death Index agrees on the death (S1753). The evidence is strong. Weak or missing: Every record is an index or a compiled book, and no image has been read; no birth record has been found; his mother's first name rests on the family book alone; no record read names his wife. Confirmed “Coffman D Carl (Minnie M) slsmn r426 Elm”; “Coffman J Frank (Edna M) h709 Grape apt 5”; “Coffman J Lee (Mattie Jane) agt Seaboard Life Ins Co h1782 Oak”; with an unrelated grocer’s family. ⚠ A directory states no relationships. D. Carl at 426 Elm with Minnie M. matches the 1930 and 1940 censuses (S1220, S1221); J. Frank, with a wife Edna M., is not identified here: he is either his brother Joseph Franklin Coffman, whose wife by the other records was Lora, or that brother’s son Joseph Franklin Coffman Jr., born in 1908, which the wife’s name fits better (S1753).
- S1753Indexes and family book — Joseph Franklin (J. Frank) Coffman Jr., Texas, 1908, and San Diego County, California, 1990. Kauffman-Coffman genealogy (1940), p. 567. FamilySearch: 1930 census index (HLJ5-7W2); California Death Index (VP9H-33B); Social Security Death Index (JB75-CZW). Index text and a compiled book; no image read. Probable Family book: born 10 November 1908, a son of Joseph Franklin Coffman. 1930: in his father’s household. California Death Index: born 10 November 1908 in Texas, died 24 June 1990 in San Diego County, mother’s maiden name Stanley. The Social Security Death Index agrees on the death. ⚠ Index and compiled book only: no image has been read and no birth record has been found. The family book alone gives his mother’s first name, Pet. His wife and children are not named here. Serves the cards of Joseph Franklin Coffman Jr., Joseph Franklin Coffman and Lora Matilda Maxwell Coffman, his stepmother.
