Research status

Research status: PROBABLE husband of Louise Elizabeth Rose. The index of his First World War draft registration at Highline, Imperial County, California, names his wife as “Louise Rose Fonseca” S1636; the Alameda County marriage index has John M. Fonseca and Louisa Rosa on 30 May 1907 S1538; and an Imperial County voter roll of the 1920s lists Mrs. Louise Rose Fonseca next to John M. Fonseca, dairyman S1541. That John Fonseca’s wife was a Louise Rose is settled; that she is this Louise, daughter of Antone Rose, is not. The draft card is read from the index only; its image is not yet read. Added to the family tree on 10 October 2026

Evidence: The index of his First World War draft registration at Highline, Imperial County, names his wife as Louise Rose Fonseca; the Alameda County marriage index has John M. Fonseca and Louisa Rosa on 30 May 1907; an Imperial County voter roll lists Mrs. Louise Rose Fonseca next to John M. Fonseca. Weak or missing: No record read names Louise's parents, so that his wife is this Louise, daughter of Antone Rose, rests on her name, age and California birth; the draft card is read from its index only; his parents and his death are not found. Life in the order the records give it

Birth1882
Born on 1 June 1882, by the draft card index, which gives no birthplace S1636
Census1910
The census households read for Louise’s card show John Fonseca, 28, a packing-house laborer born in Portugal, at South San Francisco in 1910 S1539; an Azorean-born dairy farmer in Holtville Township, Imperial County, in 1920 S1540; and, at 47, a poultry-packing laborer at Rialto, San Bernardino County, in 1930 S1542. The children of those households are on Louise’s card and are not named here

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: no record read names Louise’s parents, so the link to this family rests on her name, age and California birth; his birthplace is given only as Portugal or the Azores by the censuses; his parents, his arrival and his death have not been found. Her death record or the 1907 marriage certificate (Book 39, page 314) would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
