How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not. The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information rather than lacking it.
Attested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
Strongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field, or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Searched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Supplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands apart from the three record tags above S24.
Biological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond: no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document was read for it S46.
The person is living. On the charts and in the chains of names a living person appears by name and relationship. A living adult’s full record is on their own card, published with the family’s consent and kept out of search engines. A minor appears by name only. The privacy note at the head of the page gives the rule in full.
A branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Evidence: Henry S. Roberts is in this couple’s household in 1860 (as “H S L”, 5) and 1870 (Henry, 15) with the same sisters, Rachel H., Mary C. and Ephalinda/Ethelinda (S1049, S1504), and his own 1931 death certificate names his mother Harriet (S2411). Weak or missing: No record yet names Henry Roberts as Henry S.’s father: his 1931 death certificate gives the father as “Samuel” (the informant was Henry S.’s son Samuel); Harriet’s maiden name is unresolved, Gamble (1931 certificate) or Sheet(s) (Find a Grave index); the 1880 household and the burials are index only. 6 of the record's sources are cited here. The numbering is the record's own; the full list, with where else each is cited, is at Sources.
- S10491860 United States Federal Census — Martinsville (Martins Ferry), Pease Township, Belmont County, Ohio, page 107, dwelling 777. Ancestry record 43664618. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 29 September 2026. Probable 28 July 1860: a Roberts household, the head a laborer of 31 born Ohio, with his wife, 31, and children Margaret 12, Ephalinda 9, Rachel H. 7, H. S. L. Roberts, 5, and Mary C. 2, all born Ohio. The boy “H S L”, 5, is Henry S. Roberts: his sisters Rachel H., Mary C. and Ephalinda are with him again in 1870 (S1504), and his 1931 death certificate names his mother Harriet (S2411). The census states no relationships; the parent link is Probable, and strong.
- S15041870 census — Martins Ferry, Pease Township, Belmont County, Ohio, p. 23 (stamped 123), dwelling 192, family 194, line 13 — Henry Roberts household. Ancestry, “1870 United States Federal Census”, record 39478841. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 24 September 2026. Probable Henry Roberts, 42, a laborer, and Harriet, 42, both born Ohio, with Henry Roberts, 15, a laborer, born Ohio. No relationships are stated. The boy Henry, 15, is Henry S. Roberts: Rachel H., Mary C. and Ethelinda (Ephalinda) are also in the 1860 household with “H S L”, 5 (S1049), and his death certificate names his mother Harriet (S2411). A baby Henry A., 6 months, is a younger brother.
- S2411Ohio certificate of death, file no. 21197 — Henry S. Roberts, Pease Township, Belmont County, 1931. FamilySearch, “Ohio, Deaths, 1908–1953”, 1:1:XD16-SJJ, image TH-267-11599-76808-33. Image examined, read 25 October 2026. Confirmed Henry S. Roberts, widowed, died 31 March 1931, aged 75 years 4 months 13 days, of bronchopneumonia; born 8 November 1855, Wheeling, West Virginia; worked in the sheet galvanizing department of Wheeling Steel; buried at Greenwood on 1 April 1931. Father “Samuel Roberts”, born Ohio; mother’s maiden name “Harriet Gamble”, born Ohio. Informant Samuel Roberts, Bridgeport, Ohio, his son. The mother’s first name, Harriet, agrees with the 1860–1900 censuses. The father’s name does not: every census gives Henry, and the informant was named Samuel, so he probably wrote his own name in that line. The maiden name Gamble is also the maiden name of Rose Williams’s mother, so the two mothers may have been mixed up.
- S24121900 census — Pultney Township (south of the B&O), Belmont County, Ohio, ED 14, sheet 16A, lines 5–7 — Henry Roberts household. FamilySearch 1:1:MMCH-3VK, image TH-266-11758-52464-77. Image examined, read 25 October 2026. Henry Roberts, head, born December 1829, Ohio, his father born Ohio and his mother West Virginia; Harriet, wife, born March 1830, Ohio, both her parents born Maryland, mother of 9 children, 4 living; both married 52 years (about 1848); Mary A. Dorsey, sister-in-law, born April 1822, Maryland, widowed. Names no child, so it does not by itself tie Henry S. to this couple; it gives the marriage year and Harriet’s parents’ birthplace. Mary A. Dorsey is probably Harriet’s sister.
- S24141880 census — Triadelphia, Ohio County, West Virginia — Henry Roberts household. FamilySearch search result. Index only. Henry Roberts and his wife Harriet, born about 1830, Ohio, with Louisa D., William N. and Rosa E. J. Louisa D. and William N. are in the 1870 Martins Ferry household, so this is the same family. Triadelphia is the birthplace a daughter’s death record gives for Henry S. Roberts (S2416).
- S2415Find a Grave index — Henry Roberts and Harriet Sheet Roberts, Greenwood Cemetery, Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio. FamilySearch 1:1:QK1P-SYH4 and 1:1:QK1P-SYFT. Index only. Henry Roberts, 7 December 1828 – 25 September 1907; “Harriet Sheet Roberts”, 1830–1906. A compiled memorial index; the memorial pages and stone photographs have not been read. “Sheet” may be a maiden name (Sheets); the 1931 certificate says Gamble.
