The record in detail

Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED as Hooper’s father. His estate file has been read: on 11 March 1868 his administrator swore that “H. V. Caffey” was one of his nine heirs at law S663, and in 1850 Hooper V., 17, was living in his home, dwelling 19, with Charles, 61, and Nancy, 59 S484
Show detailsHide details

Life

Birth1789
Born about 1789, North Carolina; died in 1860, before 21 November, when his estate was appraised in Montgomery County, Alabama S663
Record1811
His marriage bond survives. On 27 November 1811, with John Hill as bondsman, Charles Caffey gave bond in North Carolina for his marriage to Nancy Lewis, and signed it himself S647. It is the first record to give Nancy's maiden name. It does not by itself show that Hooper was their son; the 1868 heirs list does.
Census1830
In 1830 a Charles Caffey in Montgomery County, Alabama, headed a household of a man aged 40–49 and a woman aged 30–39, which fits Charles, born about 1789, and Nancy, born about 1791, with eleven children under 20 and one enslaved man. An Elizabeth Lewis, Nancy's maiden surname, headed a household on the same page S742 Probable confirm or correct →. What is weak: the census names only the head, and the page has no county header, so the county comes from the index.
Census1860
In October 1860, the year he died, Charles Caffey, 72, farmer, real estate $2,500, was in the 2nd District of Montgomery County (P.O. Ramah) with Nancy, 60, born Maryland, Jane, 28, Mary Stoudenmire(?), 30, and James, 14, Hooper, 12, Charles, 10, and Mary, 8. H. V. Caffey, 28, and his young family lived next door Confirmed S1151. The census gives his birthplace as South Carolina, against North Carolina elsewhere.
Census1840
In 1840 Charles Caffey was still heading a household in Montgomery County, Alabama, with one enslaved person and five people working in agriculture Confirmed S1154. The tallies are faint; the oldest man and woman fit Charles and Nancy, and the boys fit Hooper and his brothers.

graded Confirmed as Hooper’s father when the estate file was read (S663); the notes on John Caffey Sr., the surname card (S667) and the 1830 census (S742) were added the same day. 28 Sep 2026 — the original will-book entry was read (S848). Those dates were taken out of the standing text on 12 Oct 2026, with no grade changed. 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 26 Sep 2026 (1 note). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed.

Family

Children
Children1868
His heirs at law in 1868, all of full age: Lindsey R. Caffey (the administrator), H. V. Caffey, Jane Caffey, Polly Stoudemire and Sarah Eylands of Montgomery County; Dorcas Green of Columbus, Georgia; John L. Caffey of Autauga County; Sophia Owens of Pike County; and Drucilla Eylands of Coffee County S663. A petition for dower was still before the court in 1862, so his widow outlived him. The file does not name his own father.
Parents1923
His mother: probably Mary Buchanan Probable confirm or correct →. A 1923 SAR application gives her as John Caffey Sr.'s wife, married about 1780 S849. What is weak: the SAR papers are compiled, and by 1821 John's wife was Sarah S848, so she may have been a second wife.
Marriage1868
A compiled surname card in the Alabama surname files also makes him “Charles&sup4; Caffey (John³, Michael², John¹)”, married to Nancy Lewis, with children John, Monroe, Wm. Hooper, Jane, Parylee, Philadelphia and Lindsay S667. Probable confirm or correct → It is a second, independent compiled account of the same chain, and its Jane, John and Lindsay match the 1868 heirs. What is weak: it is compiled and cites nothing, so it does not upgrade the “probably a son of John Caffey Sr.” line above. Its 1786 birth year conflicts with his 1850 age, and its “Wm. Hooper (m.
Vance)” may or may not be Hooper Van. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Probably a son of John Caffey Sr. Evidence: on the same 1850 page, Thomas Caffey, 66, and Michael Caffey, 68, both born in North Carolina, lived two doors either side of Charles, in dwellings 18 and 21 S484. Thomas, Michael and Charles are three of the seven children named in John Caffey Sr's 1821 will, and each is of an age to be his son. What is weak: neighbours are not a record of parentage; the will names a son Charles but nothing yet shows he is this Charles. His 1860 Montgomery County probate would help. The original will-book entry has been read: it names “my Seven Children (Viz) Thomas Caffey Elizabeth Caffey Henry Caffey Michael Caffey John Caffey Charles Caffey and Hooper Caffey” S848, confirming the abstract's wording but adding no age or residence for Charles; Earl accepted the link as probable that day.

Census1866
The 1866 Alabama state census lists a Nancy Caffey heading a household of two women over 20 in Montgomery County, on the same page as Elizabeth Caffey and L. R. Caffey S736 Probable confirm or correct →. If it is her, she was still living in 1866. What is weak: the list gives no ages or birthplaces, so the name and county are the only link.
Census1840
In 1840 the household of Charles Caffey in Montgomery County, Alabama, included a woman of about her age S1154. The 1840 census names only the head, so she is not named.

Work1870
Possible, not confirmed: A “Chas. Cleveland” farmed in Cambria Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan, on the 1870 agriculture schedule (Ancestry record 3523469); this record has him at Marcellus, Cass County, in 1869. Hoit” (the surname is hard to read), married Frank Hodges, 54, born in New York, at Belgrade, Nance County, Nebraska, on 18 April 1894. The register names her father as Charles Cleavland, and the witnesses were her brother Milton Cleavland and Lottie Cleavland S706. She is the Anna J., 11, of the 1880 household S465, and the record puts the family in Nance County two years before Milton's own wedding there S463.
Parents1845
His parents: Solomon Cleveland, who died in California township, Branch County, Michigan, on 22 October 1845, and Mary Malinda (Thompson) Elliott, a widow when she married him in New York in 1834 Probable confirm or correct →. The printed Cleveland genealogy enters Solomon on p. 1438 S822 and numbers Charles Edgar as his son on p. 1939 S467, and a FamilySearch index of a Nebraska marriage of Charles E. Cleveland, born 1846, names his parents Solomen Cleveland and Mary Thompson S823. What is weak: a compiled book and an index with no image; no original record naming his parents has been read.
Children1869
The Cass County birth register enters his daughter Anna J. Cleveland, born at Marcellus on 22 March 1869, to Charles Cleveland, born in Michigan, and Jennet, born in Ohio, farmer, of Marcellus Confirmed S1129. The printed genealogy gives 21 March; the register is followed.

Life

Record1908
Two records of his children name Clifford Warner's wife as Ella Shreckengost: the 22 April 1908 Butler County marriage of his daughter Dessa Warner, born in Greeley County, Nebraska S682, and the 1956 Spokane death certificate of his son Claude Dee Warner, born in Nebraska on 24 May 1884 S683. Probable confirm or correct → Evidence: both records name Clifford Warner and Ella Shreckengost, and Greeley County borders Nance County, where Maud married in 1896. What is weak: Maud's own marriage entry leaves her mother blank, so that this Clifford is Maud's father rests on the name and the neighbouring county, not on a record naming them together. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.
Birth1851
Born 14 April 1851, Illinois; died January 1925 in Tripp County, South Dakota, and buried at Colome Cemetery Probable confirm or correct → S1330. Evidence: his gravestone at Colome reads “Clifford Warner, Apr. 14, 1851 – Jan. 13, 1925”; Colome is in Tripp County, where Cliff Warner, 67, farmed alone in 1920 S1312. The 1900 census gives the same birth month, April, with year 1852 S1062; the 1870 census age, 19 in July 1870, fits 1851 S828. The censuses follow one man: 19 in 1870, 28 in 1880, 48 in 1900, 67 in 1920. What is weak: three censuses (1880, 1900, 1920) point to 1852 rather than 1851; the stone names no family and may have been cut later; the stone says 13 January but the Find a Grave memorial says 21 January; no death certificate has been read. The year 1884 that the map once showed for him was his son Claude’s birth, not his. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Father of Maude Melville Warner, and so great-grandfather of Nettie Ellen Cleveland
Marriage
Marriage date not yet found; his wife was probably Ella Shreckengost (below)
Parents1858
His parents: John Warner, a miller at Winslow, Stephenson County, Illinois, who died in 1858, and Marancy Warner Probable confirm or correct →. In 1870 Clifford, 19, born in Illinois, lived at Winslow with the widow Marancy Warner, 46 S828; she had married John Warner in Stephenson County in 1841 S825, and John was at Winslow with her in 1850 S826. In 1880, at Cedar Precinct, Boone County, Nebraska, Clifford, 28, farmer, gives his father's birthplace as New York S824. What is weak: no record names Clifford's parents; the 1870 census has no relationship column, and in 1880 he gives his mother's birthplace as Massachusetts, where Marancy said New York.
Marriage1900
His wife Ella was married, not widowed, in the 1900 census of Rising City, Butler County, Nebraska Confirmed S977, and a widow in the 1910 census there Confirmed S978, so Clifford probably died before April 1910. No death record for him has been read.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → His widow probably married again: an index of Iowa county marriages has James Martin marrying Ella Shreckengast Warner, a widow born in Illinois, at Council Bluffs on 31 August 1910 S1558. Evidence: her maiden and married surnames together, her birth state and her widowhood four months after the 1910 census. What is weak or missing: read from the index only, and she is Ella A. Warner, widowed, again in 1920 and 1930; see her card. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → His daughter Martha M. A. Warner (6 April 1898 – June 1981) probably married Alden R. Moural in Lancaster County, Nebraska, on 6 September 1918; the Nebraska marriage index names the bride as a daughter of Clifford Warner and Ella Schreckengast S1561. Evidence: Martha is in her widowed mother’s house in 1900 and 1910, and her mother lives with the Mourals in 1920 and 1930; see Ella’s card. What is weak or missing: read from indexes only; the register is not yet read. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probably him in 1900: Cliff Warner, 48, an Illinois native of April 1852 whose father was from Pennsylvania and mother from New York, a railroad labourer, married 23 years but with no wife in the household, was in Brayton Township, Greeley County, Nebraska, with his son Claude, 16, born May 1884 in Nebraska Probable confirm or correct → S1062. Evidence: Claude’s birth month and state match Claude Dee Warner’s S683, and Dessa was born in Greeley County S682. Weak: Ella is not named, and the 1880 census gave his mother’s birthplace as Massachusetts. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Possibly him in 1920: Cliff Warner, 67, divorced, born in Illinois of a Pennsylvania father and a New York mother, farmed alone in Rames Township, Tripp County, South Dakota S1312. Evidence: the same age and parents’ birthplaces as the 1900 Cliff Warner. What is weak or missing: Ella called herself a widow in 1910, so either Clifford was alive and divorced, or this is another man; no death record for Clifford has been read. Know more? Research status

Research status: PROBABLE as the parents of William B. “Willie B.” Walker (1857–1914), husband of Nancy Jane Higginbotham Probable confirm or correct →. Evidence: Willie's own 1914 death certificate names his parents as Daniel Walker and Mary J. Brass (or Bross) S787; in 1900 his mother Mary J. Daniels, 69, lived with him in Jackson County, Texas S808; and his brother Edgar's 1941 certificate names Daniel Green Walker and Mary Jane Bross and gives Edgar's birth in California in 1861 S809. What is weak: Willie's certificate was informed by his widow and gives only “Daniel Walker”, without the Green; the 1900 link rests on the mother's remarried surname and a California birth; and the records disagree on birthplaces (Alabama for both parents on Willie's certificate and 1900 census, California on Edgar's, Louisiana for Mary in 1880). Approved by Earl 27 September 2026.

Evidence: Willie B. Walker's own 1914 death certificate names his parents as Daniel Walker and Mary J. Brass or Bross; in 1900 his mother, Mary J. Daniels, 69, lived in his household; his brother Edgar's 1941 certificate names Daniel Green Walker and Mary Jane Bross. Weak or missing: Willie's certificate was informed by his widow and omits "Green"; the 1900 link rests on the mother's remarried surname and a California birth; the records disagree on birthplaces; Daniel Green's dates come from an online tree, and by July 1870 Mary Jane was already in David Dannel's household in Louisiana, which does not fit a remarriage after a death in 1873. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Life

Census1870
Mary Jane married again, and earlier than the family tree allows: on 25 July 1870 M. J., 40, born Alabama, keeping house, was in the household of David Dannel, 70, a farmer born Louisiana, at Ward 6, Bossier Parish, Louisiana (P.O. Cotton Valley), with Andrew Dannel, 24, and three Walker boys: Tom, 20, born Mississippi, and Wallice, 14, and Edgar, 10, both born California Probable confirm or correct → S1079. Evidence: her age and Alabama birth, Edgar’s California birth, and the Dannels and Daniels surname she carries in 1880 and 1900. Weak: the census states no relationships, so David is only probably her second husband. Since she was in Louisiana by 1870, the family tree’s death of Daniel Green in California on 14 July 1873 cannot have come before her remarriage: either the couple had parted before 1870, or that death belongs to another Daniel Walker. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Census1880
In 1880 she was Mary Dannels, 50, a widow in Angelina County, Texas, with her son Edgar, 18 S809, and in 1900 Mary J. Daniels, “Mother”, born June 1830 in Alabama, a widow and the mother of three children, in Willie B. Walker's household S808.
Death1815
Daniel Green's birth about 1815 in South Carolina and his death on 14 July 1873 at Columbia, Tuolumne County, California, come from an online family tree, not a record. Willie's certificate gives Willie's own birth at Columbia, California, in April 1857 S787, which fits.
Census1850
In 1850 the couple, Daniel Walker, 35, born South Carolina, and Mary, 19, born Alabama, with sons John, 2½, and an infant, lived in the Noxubee County, Mississippi, household of the postmaster John Bross S845; a Mississippi marriage index has Daniel Walker marrying Mary Bross S846.
Record1845
Possible, not confirmed: A “Green Walker” in Rankin County, Mississippi, in the 1845 state head-count, with 2 males and 3 females (Ancestry record 67129), may be Daniel Green Walker before his marriage about 1847. Weak: no age or birthplace. What would settle it: a Rankin County record naming Daniel Green Walker or his household.

Family

Parents1850
Her father: probably John Bross Probable confirm or correct →, 49, born South Carolina, whose household she and Daniel shared in 1850 with Matilda Bross, 43 S845. What is weak: the census states no relationships.
Parents1824
His father: probably Jarrett Walker Probable confirm or correct →, of Union District, South Carolina, whose will of 13 September 1824 names a son Daniel Walker among his children still under age S847. What is weak: nothing yet ties this Daniel to Union District
no middle name, deed or estate division — and Daniel Walker is a common name in South Carolina. The online tree's further step to Thomas Walker of Lunenburg County, Virginia, is still unsupported. See the Walker line.

Open questions

Probable
Probably Daniel Green in California: in July 1860 Danl Walker, 45, a miner born South Carolina, was at Columbia, Tuolumne County Probable confirm or correct → S1067, and in July 1870 Daniel Walker, 56, a miner born South Carolina, was still at Columbia S1068. Evidence: age and birthplace agree with 1850 S845, and Columbia is where the family tree puts his death in 1873. Weak: he is alone with other miners in both years, and nothing on either page names his wife or children. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probably Mary Jane in 1860, with the boys, while Daniel was in California: M. J. Walker, 30, a farmer born Mississippi, headed her own household at Ward 3, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana (P.O. Wiseville), with J. T., 12, D. G., 10, W. B., 6, and E. G., 1, next door to John Bross, 35, born South Carolina, and M. R. Bross, 65 Probable confirm or correct → S1071. Evidence: her age, the sons J. T. and the infant of 1850 S845, and the Bross family next door. Weak: initials only, no relationships stated, and Mississippi rather than the Alabama of 1850 S845. W. B., 6, born Mississippi about 1854, does not agree with the 11 April 1857 California birth on Willie’s death certificate S787, so that date is left as it is. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → He probably registered to vote in Tuolumne County on 24 December 1866 as Daniel Walker, 52, born South Carolina, of Gold Springs, about a mile from Columbia. Weak: name, age and birthplace only. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1460
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Her son William (Willie B.) was probably also in her 1880 Angelina County household: William Walker, 21, single, born in Louisiana, with his mother Mary Dannels, 50, and his brother Edgar, 18. Weak: Louisiana, where his death certificate says California. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1530
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: a Jane Walker farming in Angelina County, Texas, on the 1860 agriculture schedule (Ancestry record 3880155) conflicts with M. J. Walker in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, in July 1860; both cannot be Mary Jane that year, and the Louisiana entry is kept. What would settle it: the 1860 Angelina County population schedule for Jane Walker.

The 1880 census of Cedar Precinct, Boone County, Nebraska, read from the image, lists Clifford Warner, 28, his wife Ella, 22, born in Illinois, and their daughter Maud, born in Nebraska, whose parents are both entered as born in Illinois S824; the 1908 marriage of Clifford's daughter Dessa S682 and the 1956 death certificate of his son Claude Dee S683 give his wife as Ella Shreckengost. What is weak: the census gives Ella's relationship to Clifford, not to Maud; Maud's own 1896 marriage entry leaves her mother blank S463; and the maiden name rests on the records of Maud's brother and sister
Show detailsHide details

Evidence: The 1880 census of Boone County, Nebraska lists Clifford Warner's wife Ella, 22, born Illinois, with their daughter Maud, whose parents are both entered as Illinois-born; Clifford's children Dessa (1908 marriage) and Claude Dee (1956 death certificate) give his wife as Ella Shreckengost; an index of her 1910 marriage at Council Bluffs names her parents as Henry Shreckengast and Mary Miller. Weak or missing: The census gives Ella's relationship to Clifford, not to Maud; Maud's own 1896 marriage entry leaves her mother blank; the 1910 marriage is read from the index only; the middle name Andora and her birth and death dates are unsourced. Life

Birth1858
Born about 1858 in Illinois (22 in June 1880), to parents both born in Pennsylvania S824
Record1857
The family tree's middle name “Andora” and birth on 12 October 1857 at Winslow, Stephenson County, Illinois, are not on any record read and are not published here as fact; its death on 20 March 1940 at Schuyler, Colfax County, Nebraska, now has partial support from the state death index (below), which gives the year and county only
Census1900
In 1900 Ella A. Warner, born in October 1858 in Illinois, married 24 years, mother of seven children, five living, rented at Rising City, Butler County, Nebraska, with Elsie B., Marion H. and Martha A. Confirmed S977. By April 1910 she was a widow, 52, still at Rising City with Marion and Martha; four of her seven children were living Confirmed S978.

Open questions

Probable
Probable mother of Maude Melville Warner. Wife of Clifford Warner. Named as mother of Dessa Warner, born in Greeley County, Nebraska S682, and of Claude Dee Warner, born in Nebraska on 24 May 1884 S683
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In June 1870 Ella, 11, was at school in the Town of Lena, Stephenson County, Illinois, in the household of Mary A. Shreckengost, 37, born in Pennsylvania, with Clement, 18, Milton, Rena, John E. and Minnie; no man was in the house S1318. Evidence: the surname Shreckengost, her age, her Illinois birth and a Pennsylvania-born mother. What is weak or missing: the census states no relationships, so Mary A. as her mother is inference, and her father is not named. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In July 1860 she was probably “E.”, a girl of 3 born in Illinois, in the Winslow, Stephenson County, household of Henry “Schnepenger” [probably Shreckengost], 35, a farmer born in Pennsylvania, with M., 26, P. J., 10, C., 8, and Samuel, 72. M. and C. fit Mary A. and Clement of her 1870 household, so Henry was probably her father. Weak: initials only, a garbled surname, and no relationships stated. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1523
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → She probably died in 1940 in Colfax County, Nebraska, where she was living in 1930: the Nebraska death index lists Ella A. Warner there in 1940, certificate no. 2503. Weak: the index gives no age or exact date, and Warner is a common name. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1524
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Her parents were probably Henry Shreckengost and Mary A. Miller, who each now have a card. An index of Iowa county marriages has James Martin marrying Ella Shreckengast Warner, a widow born in Illinois in 1859 (a second index of the same marriage says 1857), at Council Bluffs on 31 August 1910, and names the bride’s parents as Henry Shreckengast and Mary Miller S1558. Evidence: her maiden and married surnames together, her birth year and state, and her widowhood (she was a widow at Rising City in April 1910); Henry and Mary A. fit her 1860 and 1870 households above. A grave index has a Henry Shreckengost, 9 July 1822 – 20 April 1896, buried in Butler County, Nebraska, where Ella lived. What is weak or missing: this is read from the index only and the register is not yet read; the name Miller rests on this one line; she is Ella A. Warner, widowed, again in 1920 and 1930, so what became of the marriage to James Martin is not known; and the index of the 1870 Lena page lists Henry, 49, at the head of the household, where our reading of the image S1318 found no man in the house
one of the two is wrong, and re-reading that page settles it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Her daughter Martha M. A. Warner (6 April 1898 – June 1981) probably married Alden R. Moural in Lancaster County, Nebraska, on 6 September 1918: the Nebraska marriage index names the bride as a daughter of Clifford Warner and Ella Schreckengast S1561. Evidence: Martha A. is with Ella at Rising City in 1900 and 1910, and Ella lives in the Moural household in 1920 and 1930 (above). Her birth and death dates come from the Social Security death index and a grave index, which has her buried at Cantril, Van Buren County, Iowa. What is weak or missing: this is read from indexes only; the marriage register is not yet read. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Research status: CONFIRMED as Nancy Jane Higginbotham Walker's mother — in the 1880 census of Rockdale Beat, Randolph County, Alabama, read from the image, “N. J.” Higginbotham, 15, born Alabama, is the daughter of the widowed head, L. Higginbotham, born South Carolina S812, and Nancy Jane's 1953 death certificate gives her mother's maiden name as Avery S331. Her given name, Lucinda, comes from FamilySearch indexes of the 1870 and 1860 Randolph County censuses, which are independent of both the 1880 page and the certificate S841S842.
Show detailsHide details

Life

Birth1830
Born about 1830, South Carolina: 50 or 51 in 1880, born South Carolina to parents born there S812; the 1860 and 1870 indexes also give about 1830, South Carolina S841S842. An online tree's birth in 1827 at Anderson, South Carolina, and its death in 1890 “probably Alabama” are on no record read, and its spelling “Avary” is not the certificate's “Avery”
Census1870
In 1870, as Lucinda Higgenbotham, born about 1830 in South Carolina, she headed a household in Randolph County, Alabama, with Alexander, Benjamin and Nancy, by a FamilySearch index of that census S841.
Census1860
In 1860 Lucinda C. Higinbothen, born about 1830 in South Carolina, was in the household of Wm H. Higginbothum, Northern Division, Randolph County, by a FamilySearch index of that census S842. Her husband is not settled: Nancy Jane's certificate names her father as Robert Higginbotham S331, and by 1880 Lucinda was a widow S812. Both census pages have since been read from the images S842S960.
Census1870
The 1870 census image confirms the index: Lucinda Higginbotham, 40, keeping house, with a personal estate of $300, born South Carolina, with Alexander, Benjamin and Nancy, 6, at Township 19, Randolph County (post office Wedowee), on 10 June 1870 Confirmed S960.
Census1860
The 1860 census image confirms the index: Lucinda C., 30, a seamstress, born South Carolina, at Rockdale, Randolph County, with Wm H. Higginbotham, 35, farmer, born Georgia, and six boys, J. F. M., 12, born South Carolina, and C. C., R. L., Alexr, B. D. and E. H., born Alabama Confirmed S842. Wm H. as her husband Probable confirm or correct →: Evidence: she is listed in the wife's place after him. Weak: the 1860 census states no relationships, and Nancy Jane's certificate names her father Robert S331. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Census1850
In 1850, as Lucinda C. Higginbotham, 21, she was in the Beat 7, Randolph County, household of Wm Higginbotham, 25, farmer, born Georgia, with John, 2, and C. C., 1 Confirmed S995. Wm as her husband is now in two censuses, 1850 and 1860 Probable confirm or correct → S995S842. Weak: neither census states relationships, and Nancy Jane's certificate names her father Robert S331. The 1850 page gives her birthplace as Georgia only by a ditto mark; South Carolina, from three later censuses, is kept. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Life

Birth1848
Born about 1848, probably in Indiana, if she is the “Minnie” of the 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses (below). Her death has not been read from a record. The family tree's middle initial “J.” comes only from an Illinois marriage index that has not been read
Record1870
FamilySearch agrees: Edna's Iowa county marriage index entry names her mother Armenia Howard S817, and so does the marriage of her son Stephen Wood Orsborn, born 1870 in Hamilton County, Ohio S818
Census1880
In 1880 Jno. W. Osborn's wife at Greendale, Dearborn County, Indiana, was Minnie, 32, born Indiana, with their son Stephen, 9, born Ohio Probable confirm or correct → S980; in 1870 John Osborn, 22, and Minnie, 22, born Indiana, were in Miller Township, Dearborn County, with Charles, five months old, born in January 1870, who is not in the 1880 household and probably died young Probable confirm or correct → S981. Evidence: John W., the son Stephen and Lawrenceburg, Edna's birthplace, tie the 1880 household to her. Weak: no record read names her both Minnie and Armenia. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Death1910
She had probably died by 1910: that April a John Osborn, 61, born Ohio, at Lawrenceburg Township, Dearborn County, had a second wife, Margaret, 56, who had borne no children, and a son Charles, 15, born Illinois to an Indiana-born mother Probable confirm or correct → S1054. Evidence: John’s name, age and birthplace and the Lawrenceburg address. Weak: nothing names Armenia or gives a death date or place, so her death stays unrecorded. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Children1871
Her son Stephen Wood Orsborne, born 16 February 1871 in Ohio, died at Hampton, Iowa, on 9 January 1925; his death certificate names his parents as John Wood Orsborne and Armenia Howard Confirmed S973. It gives her birthplace as Ohio; the census below says Indiana. In 1900 John Orsborn's wife in Yates Township, McLean County, Illinois, was Minnie, born in April 1848 in Indiana, married 30 years, mother of eight children, six living Probable confirm or correct → S974. Evidence: her husband's name, the 1848 ages, the 1870 marriage and the Orsborn spelling fit. Weak: the census never gives her full name, and no record read names her both Minnie and Armenia. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Open questions

Probable
Probably her in 1860: Arimena Howard, 12, born Indiana, in the household of J.(?) W. Howard, 38, a boatman, and Margaret, 39, at Randolph Township, Ohio County, Indiana (P.O. Rising Sun), with seven brothers and sisters Probable confirm or correct → S1069. Evidence: the rare name, an age that fits her birth about 1848, and Ohio County next to Dearborn County, where Edna was born. Weak: the census states no relationships, and nothing on the page links her to John W. Orsborn, so J. W. and Margaret are only probably her parents. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Life

Birth1834
Born and died: not on any record read. The fuller name “John Charles (Schumacher) Peters”, a birth on 26 October 1834 in Mecklenburg and a death on 30 January 1902 come from the family tree. The 1834 date belongs to a Mecklenburg baptism of Karl Johann Joachim Christian Friedrich Peters that no record read ties to this man, and the death date has no source. None of them is published here as fact
Record1834
FamilySearch agrees: its index of the same county marriage register, and a birth index entry for one of Benjamin's brothers or sisters, name the father John Peters S816. FamilySearch has nothing tying him to the 1834 Mecklenburg baptism
Census1884
In March 1884 he was farming in Fairfield Township, Grundy County, Iowa, where his wife Sophia, née Herman(n), 41, had their fifth child, an unnamed son born on 12 March; both parents were born in Germany Confirmed S998.
Census1885
In the 1885 Iowa census of Grundy County, read from the image, John Peters, 50, and Sophia, 41, both natives of Germany, head a household with eight children: William, 20, and Frank, 19, natives of New York; Charlie, 16, of Black Hawk County; Fred, 12; Louie, 10; Sarah, 8; John, 6; and Ben, 3, of Grundy County Confirmed S1010. Children1866
Father of Frank Peters (12 October 1866, New York – 2 September 1931, Alexander), husband of Addie and a farmer at Alexander for 25 years: Frank's death certificate, read from the image, names his father John Peters, a native of Germany Confirmed S1009.

John, 22, Saraha, 23, and a grandson, Wesley, 2, were with them Probable confirm or correct → S985. Evidence: the name pair, the German births and Franklin County, where Benjamin married in 1903 S791. Weak: Benjamin is not in this household, and the census does not name him. Know more? The Røldal baptism register for 1868, read from the image, names his parents as the farmer Thore Thoresen Selland and his wife Ingeborg Ivarsdatter S74; the emigrant Mons is tied to that entry by his exact birth date in the FamilySearch naturalization and death indexes S1078

Life

Birth1831
Born in 1831 at Sauda, by the Røldal burial register S77. The 1910 census gives her birth as 15 March 1831 S1111 and the 1847 banns her farm name as Hagerland S1112; the day 29 March and the farm name Aartun that online trees give her are not on any record read here
Death1912
Died 9 May 1912 at Selland and was buried on 18 May, four weeks before her husband, as Ingebjørg Ivarsdatter Selland S77
Census1875
In the census of 31 December 1875 she is Engeborg Iversdtr, 44 by her birth year of 1831, wife of Thore Thorsen in Røldal, with their son Mons, born 1868, and three more children: Anders, 1857, and two daughters both named Engeborg, born 1865 and 1873. The census gives her birthplace as Søvde, in Sands parish; her burial entry says Sauda Confirmed S1100
Census1847
The banns for her marriage to Thor Thorsen Selland were read in May 1847, when she was Ingeborg Ivarsdatter Hagerland, 16 Confirmed S1112. In the census of 1 December 1910 she is Ingeborg Selland, wife of Tore T. Selland, born 15 March 1831 Confirmed S1111

Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED as the father of Mons Selland. The Røldal baptism register for 1868, read from the image, enters Mons, born 9 May and baptised 21 June 1868, in wedlock, as the son of the farmer Thore Thoresen Selland and Ingeborg Ivarsdatter S74. FamilySearch’s South Dakota naturalization and Minnesota death indexes give the American Mons Selland the same exact birth date, 9 May 1868, with the patronymic Thorsen or Torson, so the Røldal child is Kristin’s ancestor S1078

Life

Birth1820
Born 3 June 1820 at Bakkene in Røldal, Hordaland, and baptised 1 July 1820, son of the farmer Tore Monsen Selland and Ingebjørg Ormsdatter, by the Røldal register of births S76. A second Thore born at Røldal in 1820, to Helje Hellegsen of Suve, is a different child. The 1801 census enters Bakkene as a cotter’s holding of its own, next after the Selland farm S1694. No record read says in words that Bakkene lay under Selland, but it probably belonged to that farm: the Røldal register calls the cotter family of Bakkene “Sellands” in 1791 and 1796 S1695, and his father is called Sælland at his marriage in 1807 and was of Selland at his death
Death1912
Died 5 June 1912 at Selland and was buried on 12 June, aged 91, by the Røldal burial register S77. The clerk wrote his patronymic there as Ivarsson, his wife’s; the 1820 and 1868 baptisms make him Toreson, and the slip is recorded as a slip
Record1868
The registers spell him Thore Thoresen in 1868 and Tore in 1912; the farm name Selland travels with the address. The 4 June birth that circulates online is not on any record read; the register gives 3 June
Census1875
In the census of 31 December 1875 he is Thore Thorsen, born 1820, a farmer who owned his land and also worked as a building carpenter and smith, with his wife Engeborg, their son Mons and three other children Confirmed S1100
Census1910
In the census of 1 December 1910 he is Tore T. Selland, 90, a retired farmer living on his annuity at Selland, born 3 June 1820
the date of the 1820 baptism register — with his wife Ingeborg Confirmed S1111
Census1891
In the census of 1 January 1891 he is Tor Torsen, born 1820 at Røldal, married, the head of his household and a farmer who owned his land, enumerated in Suldal district with his wife Ingeborg Confirmed S1117
Census1865
In the census of 31 December 1865 he is Thore Thorsen, 46, a farmer and freeholder in Røldal, with his wife Ingeborg, 35, and their sons Thore, 14, and Iver, 11 Confirmed S1126. In the census of 3 December 1900 he is Tore T. Selland, born 1820 at Røldal, a farmer living on a farm annuity, in Suldal with his wife Ingeborg S1127.

Evidence: The 1870 Røldal baptism register, read by eye from the image, names Ole Nilsen of Lone and Siri Larsdatter as the parents of Gyri, born 22 January 1870 at Lone; the 1857 Røldal marriage register gives Ole Nilsen, Lone, 31, son of Nils Ormsen; the 1875 census (S1285) has Ole Nielssen, born 1826, farmer at Lone, with Gyri (1870) and his father Niels Ormsen in the house; a Nils O. Lone, 47, names his father Ola N. Lone on a 1907 passenger list (S1287). Weak or missing: No US record yet ties Julia (Lone) Selland by name to Røldal or to this baptism; the link rests on the birth date the family tree gives her and the 1889 emigration from Røldal. Life

Birth1826
Born 25 April 1826 at Lone, Røldal, son of Nils Ormsen Lone
Census1875
In the 1875 census he was the farmer and owner of Lone, Røldal, born 1826, with his children Kari, Niels, Kristi, Lars, Orm, Gyri (Jöri, 1870) and Britta, his sisters Gro and Sunniva, and his parents Niels Ormsen and Kari Olsdatter S1285. No wife is listed and his marital mark is faint; whether Siri had died by 1875 is not settled
Census1865
In the 1865 census, on 31 December, Ole Nielsen, 40, was farming his own land at Lone, Røldal, with his wife Sigri Larsdatter, 30, born in Suldal, and their children Kari, 8, Niels, 6, Kristi(?), 4, and Lars, 2; Niels Ormsen, 70, and Kari Olsdatter, 72, were the retired couple on the same farm S1354. What is weak or missing: both are American records informed long after he left Norway, and the 1864 baptism has not been read. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Probably still alive in June 1907, aged about 81: a Nils O. Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED as Emma Stein Ladusch's father. The 1880 census of Austin County, which states relationships and was read from the image, lists Emma, 5, as the daughter of Henry Stein, 32, a farmer born Saxe-Weimar S919, and her own death certificate names her father Henry Stein. Emma Stein Ladusch's Texas death certificate no. 20521 (30 March 1952, Austin) S326, read from the image, her husband Otto Ladusch informant, names her father as Henry Stein, born Germany, and her mother as Amanda “Emmerd” (the reading is uncertain), born England. The 1900 census gives both her parents' birthplace as Germany, so the mother's birthplace is unsettled and no surname is entered for her
Show detailsHide details

Life

Birth1846
Born in Germany. The family account on the Ladusch–Stein line gives 23 March 1846, Saxe-Weimar – 13 November 1909, Austin County. The death date and county are now confirmed by a county report of death S613; the birth date is not yet confirmed
Death1909
The Austin County report of death records a Henry Stein, German-born, 62, who died near New Ulm on 13 November 1909 S613. The date and county match the family account. The report names no wife or children, so it confirms the death and does not prove that he was Emma's father.
Record1871
A Lutheran baptism register at New Ulm records a son, Johann Wilhelm Dietrich, born 8 October 1871, to Heinrich Stein, from the district of Eisenach, and Maria geb. Emmert, of New Ulm S633. Eisenach lay in Saxe-Weimar, where the family account says Henry was born, and Emmert is the name behind the family account's “Emmett” and the 1952 certificate's “Emmerd”. The register was written at the time. It is about a different child, though, so it still does not prove that he was Emma's father.
Census1900
A candidate household: the 1900 census of Austin County, Precinct 5, has a Henry Stein, born March 1848, a farmer, with a second wife, Pauline, married 8 years, and Adolf, Bertha, Hedwig, Nora and Ottilie S771 Probable confirm or correct →. A Bertha and a Heinrich Stein stood sponsor together at Frieda Ladusch's 1896 baptism. What is weak: this census gives his birthplace as Texas, not Germany, and does not name Emma, who had married by then. The 1880 Austin County census has now been read: it confirms him as Emma's father, and its Adolph, 2, and Bertha, 7 months, fit the Adolf and Bertha of this 1900 household S919; the Texas birthplace is still the weak point.
Census1880
On 23 June 1880 the census found him in Justice Precinct 5, Austin County: Henry Stein, 32, farmer, born Saxe-Weimar; Mary, his wife, 35, born Texas; William, 8; Anna, 6; Emma, 5; Adolph, 2; Bertha, 7 months; and his widowed father Dietrick Stein, 68, born Saxe-Weimar Confirmed S919. William, 8, is the Johann Wilhelm Dietrich baptised in 1871 S633. This is the test his card was waiting for, and it confirms him as Emma's father. His wife here, Mary, born Texas, fits the register's Maria geb. Emmert of New Ulm better than the certificate's Amanda, born England.
Death1952
Confirmed Two married daughters were living in 1952: “Mrs. Will Frederick of Bartlett” and “Mrs. Adolph Kelm of Rosenberg” are named as sisters in the death notices of his daughter Emma Stein Ladusch S1610. The notices give no first names, and none is guessed here. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not from the page image.
Death1886
Confirmed “Mrs. Adolph Kelm of Rosenberg” was his daughter Ottilie Annie Stein, born 27 November 1886 in Austin County, who married Adolph Kelm in Colorado County on 6 December 1906 and died at Richmond, Fort Bend County, on 6 May 1966; the index of her death certificate names her father Henry Stein S1635. Her mother was Mary Emmit Probable confirm or correct →. Evidence: the index of Ottilie’s death certificate gives her mother as “Mary Emmit”, and the 1880 census has Henry’s wife as Mary, 35, born Texas S919. Weak: the certificate is read from its index only and its informant is not known; this record now carries his wife as Mary Emmit, with the Amanda of Emma’s certificate kept as a variant that no record explains; it is not shown that Mary Emmit was also the mother of Emma. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. She has a card of her own: Ottilie Annie Stein Kelm.

Research status

Research status: PROBABLE — her name is now given as Mary Emmit; until 10 October 2026 this record called her Amanda. Evidence: the 1880 census of Austin County, read from the image, lists Henry Stein's wife as Mary, 35, with Emma, 5, in the household S919; the death certificate of Emma's sister Ottilie, no. 30494, read from the image, her son the informant, gives her mother's maiden name as “Mary Emmit” S1635; and the 1871 New Ulm baptism register calls Henry Stein's wife Maria née Emmert S633. Three records give Mary or Maria, and two of them agree with Emma's certificate on the surname. What is weak or missing: Emma's own certificate, alone, calls her Amanda “Emmerd” S326, and no record explains the second given name; no marriage record of Henry Stein has been found; her birthplace is given three ways, Texas in 1880, Germany in 1900 and England in 1952, and Texas is entered as the best guess because it was recorded in her lifetime; her birth year, about 1845, rests on the 1880 age alone. A marriage record of about 1870 would settle the name. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Earlier entry
entered in the family tree, labelled probable there too; Emma Stein Ladusch's Texas death certificate no. 20521 (30 March 1952, Austin) S326, read from the image, her husband Otto Ladusch informant, names her father as Henry Stein, born Germany, and her mother as Amanda “Emmerd” (the reading is uncertain), born England. The 1900 census gives both her parents' birthplace as Germany, so the mother's birthplace is unsettled and no surname is entered for her
Census1871
In 1871 the New Ulm Lutheran baptism register calls Henry Stein's wife Maria geb. Emmert (“born Emmert”), at the baptism of their son Johann Wilhelm Dietrich, born 8 October 1871 S633. It was written at the time, and the surname is clear. Probable confirm or correct → The register calls her Maria, not Amanda. She is probably the same woman, but no record yet joins the two names, and her birthplace, England or Germany, is still open.
Census1880
In the 1880 census, read from the image, Henry Stein's wife is Mary, 35, keeping house, born Texas, with Emma, 5, among the children S919. That is a third birthplace for Emma's mother, after England on the 1952 certificate and Germany in 1900, and it fits the register's Maria geb. Emmert, of New Ulm. The census does not say that Mary was Emma's mother.

Family

Children1871
Her daughter Emma's death certificate says she was born in England. Her maiden name was first read from that certificate alone: the certificate's “Emmerd” may be the Emmett that the family account on the Ladusch–Stein line gives for Henry Stein's wife. An 1871 New Ulm baptism register names Henry Stein's wife as Maria née Emmert S633, so the surname is Emmit, Emmerd or Emmert, three spellings of one name; that Maria and the certificate's Amanda were the same woman is probable, not proven

Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. Otto's own Social Security application, as indexed by both the Social Security Applications and Claims Index and the Numident, names his father as Traugott Ladusch, and its birth date, 30 March 1873, matches Otto's death certificate exactly S851S325. The 1945 death certificate of Pauline Wenzel, born in Germany in 1866, names her father as Traugott Ladusek and her mother as Johanna Sille S850, which fits a Ladusch family with children in Germany from 1866. What is weak: the application has been seen only as an index, with no image read; Otto's death certificate gives his parents as “no record” S325; and his Find a Grave memorial lists his children as Pauline Alise Wenzel, Annamarie Ehmling, Bertha Nonnenmacher and Reinhold Gustav Ladusch, without Otto S336 Probable confirm or correct →

Dates differ between sources: 1831–1899 on FamilySearch S12, 1835–1906 in a member tree S57. His birth on 7 June 1835 in Brandenburg comes from Find a Grave only; his death on 7 July 1906 is from the county’s report of death and the Texas death index, in the note below S1035; a 1900 census entry for an “Aaugot Ladusek”, born January 1846, may be another man
Arrival
Brandenburg → New Ulm, Austin County, Texas S12
Death1906
He died at La Grange, Fayette County, Texas, on 7 July 1906, at about four in the morning, aged 71 years and one month, born in Germany: so the county’s report of death, no. 811, says, read from the image among the documents below. The Texas death index has the same day under certificate 29481, the number stamped on the report Confirmed S1035. The report gives the cause as natural causes, pains and cramps of the stomach. It names no wife, parent or child, so it says nothing on whether he was Otto’s father. Seventy-one years and one month before July 1906 is June 1835, which agrees with the Find a Grave birth without proving the day or the place.

the note on his dates said that no record read gives his death; the Texas death index entry of 7 July 1906, in Fayette County, was already on this card (S1035), and the note now says so. 13 Oct 2026 — the report of death among the documents below was read from the image: it had been captioned 7 July 1908, as the member who shared it wrote; the line dated by the physician is written “06” and the stamped number is the death index’s certificate 29481, so the year is 1906 and the caption is corrected. Research status

Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. In the 1870 census of Dallas County, Texas, read from the image, Susan, 24, keeping house, born Texas, is in William Waldon's household with Alice R., 3 S801, and a Texas marriage index has Susan Voshery marrying William M. Walden on 23 December 1866 in San Augustine County, nine months before Alice was born S852. What is weak: the census states no relationships, Alice's own death certificate gives her mother as “Unknown” S781, and the marriage and the maiden name rest on an index only Probable confirm or correct →

Probable
Probable mother of Alice Walden; probable wife of William Mathis Waldon, Alice's father by her death certificate and the 1880 census S916 S781
Probable
Probably her in 1850: Susan, 5, born Texas, in the San Augustine County household of John Voshary, 40, with Mary, 26, born Tennessee, Nancy, 12, Anthony, 8, Greenbury, 3, and John, 2 months Probable confirm or correct → S1002. Evidence: the surname, her age, and the county of her 1866 marriage S852. Weak: 1850 states no relationships, and Mary is too young to be Nancy's mother, so John is her probable father but her mother is not known. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probably her in 1860: Susan, 14, born Texas, in the San Augustine household of John Voshery, 50, a farmer born Mississippi, and Mary, 35, born Tennessee, with Nancy, 22, Mary, 19, Anthony, 16, Greenberry, 11, John, 10, and Margaret, 6 Probable confirm or correct → S1070. Evidence: the rare surname, her age, and the same household as 1850 S1002, ten years on. Weak: the census states no relationships, and Mary, 35, is too young to be Nancy’s mother, so John is her probable father but her mother is not known. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Research status: CONFIRMED as Alice Walden's father — her own 1958 Texas death certificate, read from the image, names her father as Wm. Life

Census1870
In 1870 William Waldon, 28, a farmer born Missouri, was in Precinct 1, Dallas County, with Susan, 24, and Alice R., 3 S801; FamilySearch's index of the same census agrees S918. That census states no relationships
Census1880
In 1880 his wife was P. P., 23, born Arkansas, and the household had John, 5, Edward M., 2, and Sarah, 4 months S916. Palistine Waldon, widow of Wm. Waldon, born 17 May 1857 in Arkansas, died at De Leon, Comanche County, on 23 April 1934; the informant was Mrs. S. A. Murdock of De Leon S917. Her age and birthplace fit the 1880 wife. This certificate is about his widow, not about Alice, and only supports the rest
Birth1842
Born about 1842 in Missouri, by his 1870 age; his 1880 age gives about 1843. The certificate spells the middle name Mathis; the family tree's “Mathias” and its birth on 22 February 1844 at Sarcoxie, Missouri, come from Find a Grave alone and are not published here as fact. He died 2 February 1920 in Fisher County, Texas, by his widow's sworn pension application S979; the town, Roby, is on his death certificate S1001
Census1900
In 1900 W. M. Waldon, 57, born in February 1843 in Missouri, farmed his own land at Johnson City, Blanco County, Texas, with his wife P. P., 43, born in Arkansas; they had been married 26 years, which points to a marriage about 1874 (worked out from the census, not a recorded date) Confirmed S972.
Death1920
His widow, Prissila Waldon, 63, born in Polk County, Arkansas, applied for a Texas Confederate widow's pension at Girard, Kent County, on 31 March 1920. She swore that William Mathewis Waldon died 2 February 1920 in Fisher County, Texas, and that he had drawn Texas Confederate pension no. 9421 Confirmed S979. She also swore that they married on 18 July 1894 in Scott County, Arkansas Probable confirm or correct →. Evidence: her sworn statement. Weak: P. P. was already his wife in 1880 S916 and the 1900 census says married 26 years S972, and no record read names Prissila as P. P. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Death1920
His Texas death certificate, read from the image, names him W. M. Walton: he died at Roby, Fisher County, on 2 February 1920, aged 77 years 11 months, born 22 February 1842 in Missouri, married, farming, his father born in Tennessee, and was buried at Roby the same day Confirmed S1001. The certificate's 1842 agrees with his 1870 age; Find a Grave's 1844 does not.
Census1920
In January 1920 he was at Roby, Fisher County, aged 78, with his wife Paleshine, 65, and a granddaughter, Estelle Wells Confirmed S1040.
Census1850
In September 1850 he was William M., 8, at school, in the household of James Waldon, 48, a farmer born in South Carolina, and Joanna, 36, born in Kentucky, in Jackson Township, Jasper County, Missouri. He had sisters Susan C., Nancy A. and Rachel T. and a baby brother, John L. Confirmed S1120. This is the first record that names a father. Joanna’s age does not fit the 67 given in 1870, and his own later censuses give his father’s birthplace as Tennessee.
Census1910
In 1910 he was William Waldon, 67, a teamster in Mason County, Texas, in his second marriage, which had lasted 36 years. With him were his wife Phisilla, 53, born in Arkansas, mother of nine children with eight living, their sons Robert S. and Charles G., and Tempie P., 5 Confirmed S1121. Phisilla’s age and birthplace fit Palistine Waldon (born 1857, Arkansas). A marriage of about 1874 means Susan Voshery had died or left by then.
Death1958
Confirmed The 1958 obituary of his daughter Alice (Walden) Owens names three brothers, Harve, Green and Shelt Waldon (the third name is unclear in the text), and two sisters, Mrs. Ann Murdock and Mrs. Duskey Virdell, “all of De Leon” S1609. De Leon is where his widow died in 1934, and the informant on her death record was a Mrs. S. A. Murdock of De Leon, so these five are probably the children of his second marriage. This ties Alice to his second family independently of her death certificate. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not from the page image.
Death2026
His second family, from the indexes of three Texas death certificates read on 1 October 2026 (the images are not read; no source number yet). Confirmed His second wife was Pricilla P. “Palistine” Nichols, who died at De Leon on 23 April 1934: her certificate names her father as a Nichols and her husband as Wm. Waldon. It gives her birth as 5 December 1857 in Arkansas by one reading of the index and 17 May 1857 by the reading above; the image would settle the day. A son, Robert Shelton “Shelt” Waldon, born 16 September 1883 in Travis County, died at Roby on 17 September 1965; his certificate names his parents as William Waldon and Pricilla P. Nichols. That the man of that certificate is the “Shelt” of the 1958 obituary is probable, not proved. A daughter, Sarah A. “Ann” Waldon, born about 1880, was probably the wife of John Murdock of De Leon (1873–1938) and the “Mrs. S. A. Murdock” who informed in 1934; weak: no record read names her parents. None of the three has a card. Noted on 10 October 2026

Research status

Research status: PROBABLE as the parents of Charles W. Owens Probable confirm or correct →. Evidence: Charles's 1939 death certificate names his parents as Joseph Owens and China Pardon S780; in 1880, aged 17, he lived with his mother China Owen, 41, a widow born in Kentucky S798; and Chiney Parton, 16, of Whitley County, Kentucky, married Joseph Owens there on 30 January 1852 S810. What is weak: no one record names Charles with both parents but his death certificate, whose informant was his widow; the register's year is only a ditto mark from the page's one dated row, and a Tennessee compiled index gives the marriage as 30 January 1853 in Claiborne County, Tennessee S810; and the certificate has both parents born in Arkansas, where the marriage register has Kentucky and the 1880 census Tennessee for Joseph and Kentucky for China S798. Approved by Earl 27 September 2026.
Show detailsHide details

Evidence: Charles W. Owens's 1939 death certificate names Joseph Owens and China Pardon; in 1880 he lived with his widowed mother China Owen; the Kentucky register records Chiney Parton, 16, marrying Joseph Owens in Whitley County on 30 January 1852 (year by ditto mark). Weak or missing: Only the widow-informed certificate names Charles with both parents; a Tennessee index dates the marriage 1853 in Claiborne County; the certificate's Arkansas birthplaces conflict with the 1880 census. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Life

Death1880
Joseph had died by June 1880, when China was a widow in Williamson County, Texas, with Charles and his brothers and sisters Wm. A. J., Joseph C., Alice, Levi A. and Edgar S798. Charles was born in Arkansas in March 1863 S780, so the family moved from Kentucky to Arkansas and then to Texas. Joseph's own birth and death are not yet found.

Owens, 40, a wagonmaker, and Nancy, 33, with Isaiah V., Gilbert B. and Boston W. S843. What is weak: the census states no relationships, and no record names C. J. as his father.
Parents1850
Her parents: probably Jackson Parton and Catharine Parton Probable confirm or correct →. In 1850 China, 14, born Kentucky, was in their Whitley County, Kentucky, household with America, Rachael, Manuel, Nancy and William S844. What is weak: the census states no relationships, and no record names her parents or Catharine's maiden name.

Evidence: Elenor F. is the wife of James P. Montgomery in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 DeWitt County censuses that hold Virginia, all read from the images; four of her other children's Texas death certificates, each with a different informant, name a Bradford mother (Ellen Bradford twice, Elenore Frances Bradford, Mary Ellen Bradford); in 1900, read from the image, Ellen Montgomery, born March 1836 in Tennessee, is a widow in Gonzales County, mother of nine children, all living. Weak or missing: No document read names her as Virginia's mother: Virginia's own death certificate gives the mother as "don't know", and the 1880 relationship column is to the head of the house; three of the four death certificates are read from indexes only (Lula's is read from the image); the 1855 Coffee County marriage register does not name her parents; her death has not been found in a record. Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → The Idella of his 1870 household was probably Margie Idella Turner, born 15 March 1868 at Gonzales, who died at Austin on 10 January 1959. The Texas death index gives that birthplace and names her father as “Jim Montgomery” S1583, and the Austin American-Statesman of 10 and 12 January 1959 reports Mrs. Margie Idella Turner, 90, of Austin, buried in Oakwood Cemetery. Added to the tree 8 October 2026 as his daughter. What is weak or missing: the death entry is read from the index, not the certificate image, and the index names no mother; the year 1868 comes from a grave index; no marriage record has been found, so her husband is known only from censuses. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Open question
Open question: his own parents. In 1850 a James P. Montgomery, 13, born Georgia, lives with John Montgomery, 38, and Sarah, 36, in Forsyth County, Georgia S1202. They could be his parents, but every later record, his own censuses and Lula’s death certificate, says he was born in Tennessee, so they are held, not added Probable confirm or correct →
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: no record of his birth or death has been found, and his parents are not known. Find a Grave gives born 23 April 1836 and died May 1887, but its own index disagrees on the day of death, so those dates are not used here; the initial P. comes from the 1880 census and two of his children’s death indexes
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Probably the father of Harry Alexander Montgomery, Virginia’s twin, who was added to the family tree on 8 October 2026. The index of his Texas death certificate gives his birth in DeWitt County on 19 August 1858, his death at Smiley, Gonzales County, on 4 May 1931, his father as Jim Montgomery and his mother as Ellen Bradford S1186; in 1880 he is “Harry Alex”, 21, son, in James P. Montgomery’s household S1095. What is weak or missing: the death certificate is read from the index only and its informant is unknown; the exact birth date rests on that one index line. Know more?
