The record in detail

Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Two very different bodies of evidence sit side by side here. The Walker pair rests on Melvin's NUMIDENT line and on the 1930 Jackson County census that put the family under one roof. The Peters pair is documented four ways — a Social Security record, two adjacent headstones and three published obituaries from two states.

⚠️ These four rest on Social Security NUMIDENT parent fields and FindAGrave, not on census images, and they are carried at exactly the confidence the research assigned them — no higher. Everything above them is FindAGrave contributor data and is Probable throughout.

Life

Birth1873
Born 13 October 1873, Texas on his memorial
⚠️ his 1918 draft registration card reads 14 October, one day apart, and neither is preferred here S34; died 13 April 1930, Salado, Bell County; buried Salado Cemetery S34
Census1910
In 1910, in Williamson County, he was 36 and in his second marriage, of five years. His wife is written “Rachel E.”, 22, probably the Medie of family accounts; with them were Thomas O., 3 months, and Mattie Lee, 11 S521.
Military1918
His World War I draft card, read from the image, was filled in at Salado on 12 September 1918: Thomas Walton Caffey, 44, born October 14, 1873, farming, medium height, slender, grey eyes, dark hair Confirmed S997. His nearest relative is written Alyeda (or Almeda) Caffey, Salado; the name is hard to read, and it may be Medie's formal name. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Record2026
History of this card. The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 29 Sep 2026 (1 note). The marks and their dates were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed. 12 Oct 2026
the draft card in the birth line was called a 1917 card; the card itself, read from the image on 29 Sep 2026, is dated 12 September 1918 (S997), and the line now says 1918. The one-day difference in his birthday, his mother’s surname on the certificate and the county of his marriage stay marked as open conflicts.
13 Oct 2026 — “now read from the image” reworded to “read from the image”; the statement and its source are unchanged. 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 25 Sep 2026 (1 note). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed.
Burial1832
His memorial quotes Texas death certificate #16496, which names his own parents as "Van Caffey (b. Alabama)" and "Matty Lee (b. Georgia)"
identified as Hooper Van Caffey (1832–1901) and Melvina Amanda "Mattie" Griffin (1850–1933) Probable S34. ⚠️ Note the certificate says "Matty Lee" where the memorial says Griffin; that discrepancy is unresolved and the surname is not treated as settled.

Named as T.W. Jr's father in the NUMIDENT record S33
Marriage1904

Life

Birth1887
Born 28 September 1887 at Salado; died 28 July 1954 at Austin State Hospital, of pneumonia, with senility and debility, her certificate filed in Travis County, widowed, occupation practical nurse, dying under her second married name Stobaugh S70; buried Salado Cemetery in the same plot as her first husband S34
Census1900
In 1900 she was 12, at home at Manor, Travis County, with her parents Charles W. and Alice R. Owens and six brothers and sisters: William W., Epper L., Charles E., Mary P., Annie H. and Robert G. The enumerator wrote her as “Rachel A”, born September 1887 S661. With her death certificate, that puts both parents on records, and both are Confirmed.
Census1940
In 1940, as Medie Stobaugh, she was widowed, a practical nurse in Austin, with her son Thomas Caffey, 16, and her stepson Earle Stobaugh, 18 S219
Census1944
In 1944, as Mrs. J. W. Stobaugh, she swore to her son Howard Lee Caffey's birth S233. In 1950 she was at 2117 Clifton, Austin, widowed, with her mother Allice Owens, 83 S231
Death1954
Confirmed Her obituary in The Austin American, 29 July 1954 (p. 12): Mrs. Medie Stobaugh, 66, a resident of Austin for 25 years, died in a local hospital on Wednesday morning. She was a member of the Congress Avenue Baptist Church. It names her mother, Mrs. Alice Owens; three sons, Thomas O., T. W. and Howard L. Caffey, all of Austin; one daughter, Mrs. Lee Stone of Elgin, who is probably her stepdaughter Mattie Lee Caffey; two brothers, Ed Owens of Austin and Robert Owens of Kerrville; and three sisters, Mrs. Jim Caffey and Mrs. Annie Culp of Austin and Mrs. Pearl Walden of San Antonio. The funeral was at the Chapel of the Bells at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday 29 July, and the burial in Salado Cemetery, as her gravestone record has it S1597. It is the third record that names her mother, and the first in print that names her three sons together. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not checked word for word against the page image. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Census1910
In May 1910, entered as Rachel E. Coffey, 22, married five years, she was in Justice Precinct 7, Williamson County, with her husband Thomas W., a farmer, their infant son Thomas O. and her stepdaughter Mattie Lee, next door to her brother-in-law James C. Caffey and his wife Ebber L. S1457
Census2026
History of this card. 26 Sep 2026
the 1900 census household added (S661); both parents Confirmed. 27 Sep 2026 — her parents’ dates added from their death certificates (S780, S781).
Death1954
So Owens is her maiden name on a state record Confirmed. Her 1954 Texas death certificate, read from the image on 16 September 2026, names her father Charles Owens (born Texas) and her mother Alice Walden (born Tennessee); the informant was the hospital, so the 1900 census's Arkansas and Texas birthplaces are preferred S70. Until that day it rested on FindAGrave contributor data and on the fact that it explains the Stobaugh surname.
Burial1863
FindAGrave carries the same parents as Charles W. Owens (1863–1939) and Alice Rachael Waldon (1867–1958) S34. The names are now on a certificate; The dates are on their own death certificates as well: Charles, born 9 March 1863 in Arkansas, died 6 July 1939 S780; Alice, born 14 September 1867 at Waco, died 8 August 1958, with Medie as the informant S781. Alice's certificate spells her father Waldon, the memorial's spelling; Medie's says Walden. Charles's own certificate and the 1910 census S783 both say Arkansas, so the “Texas” on Medie's certificate is outweighed.
What is still open — the 1904 Caffey–Owens marriage record, which would date the first marriage. The pedigree file puts that marriage at 25 September 1904 in Bastrop County and the Caffey line note at Bell County, c.1904; neither is a record yet. The death record once named here as the closer has been obtained — it is S70 — and it was filed in Travis County, not Bell.

Open questions

Open question
⚠️ An apparent conflict, resolved. The NUMIDENT names T.W. Jr's mother "Medie Stobaugh"; FindAGrave calls her "Medie Owens Caffey" S33S34. Not two women and not an error
the SSA recorded the surname she bore when her application was filed, which by then was her second married name. She married John William Stobaugh in 1934, four years after Thomas Walton Caffey Sr. died.

Evidence: Her 1971 death certificate names her parents Melton Cleaveland and Maude Warner; her death notice of 26 November 1971 names her children by Daniel Jonah Walker. Weak or missing: Her birth date is disputed (1897 vs 1896), and no Nebraska birth record has been found. Life

Birth1897
Born 27 November 1897 in Nebraska
as given on her death certificate S145
Death1971
Died 25 November 1971, White Settlement, Tarrant County, Texas
Death1971
Died 25 November 1971 at 6:00 a.m. in White Settlement Hospital, White Settlement, Tarrant County, Texas, after a stay of one month S145. The certificate is indexed in the Texas death index as Nettie E Walker; the family tree carries this death from that index. The married name is from her second husband, Eddie Guy Walker (23 September 1898 – 1 May 1976; “Eddie G.” in the 1950 Sansom Park census S226), who is not Daniel Jonah Walker
Burial1971
Buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth, on 27 November 1971
the same cemetery as her son S145
Work
Last lived at 5717 Terrace Trail, Sansom Park, Tarrant County; occupation housewife S145
Cause
Cause of death uremia, from renal shutdown, from post-traumatic shock three weeks earlier; an autopsy was performed S145
Census1900
In 1900, aged 3, she was entered as a granddaughter in Charles E. Smith's household at Fullerton, Nance County, Nebraska S213
Census1910
In 1910, aged 13, in Brazoria County, Texas, with her father Milton Cleveland and brother Edgar; Milton's wife Desa, 22, married one year with no children, was her stepmother S224. In 1932 she and Daniel J. kept house at 3005 E 4th, Fort Worth S227
Census1940
In 1940 at 2605 Hale Street, Fort Worth, aged 42, the wife of E. G. Walker, with her daughter Mary Elen, 14; she was a seamstress on the WPA sewing project S394.
Census1923
On her daughter's birth certificate of 10 March 1923 she is 26, born Nance Co., Nebraska, the mother of five children, four living S407. Age 26 fits the 1896 birth year of the 1930 census, not the 1897 of her death certificate; the date stays open.
Military1942
E. G. Walker is very probably Eddie Guy Walker Probable confirm or correct →. The 1942 draft card of Eddie G. Walker gives his birth as 23 September 1898 at San Marcos, Texas, his home as 1310 College, Fort Worth, his work at Bewley Mills, and his contact as “Mrs. E. G. Walker” S710. His age fits E. G., 41, of the 1940 census S394. What is weak: the card does not give his wife's name, and 1310 College is not the 2605 Hale Street of April 1940, so the match rests on the initials, the city and the age.
Death1971
Her death notice in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram of 26 November 1971 gives the same address, 5717 Terrace Trail, and says she “passed away Thursday” in a local hospital. It names as survivors her husband (not by name), her sons William of Lolita and Clarence of Fort Worth, a third son in Phoenix, Arizona, and her daughter Mary of Fort Worth; services were at Biggers Chapel on Saturday 27 November, with burial at Mount Olivet S1553. This is the first record that ties Nettie E. Walker of the death certificate to Daniel Jonah Walker’s children by name, so her identity is now settled. Weak: the notice was read from the newspaper site’s machine text, not the page image; it names no parent, age or birthplace, so her parentage stays probable and the 1896/1897 question is untouched; and her daughter’s married surname in the notice is not yet readable.

Open questions

Open question
⚠️ Her birth date is not settled. The certificate says 27 November 1897; the 1930 census reading already on this site says 29 November 1896 S87. Two days and one year apart. Item 8 of a death certificate is informant-supplied, seventy-four years after the fact, so neither date is settled and both stay here until a Nebraska birth record decides.
Open question
⚠️ What the trauma was is not recorded. The certificate names post-traumatic shock as the underlying cause, yet every injury field is blank
accident, suicide, homicide, the time, the manner and the place of injury are all left empty. The certificate contradicts itself by omission.
Open question
⚠️ The certificate is filed under her married name, Nettie E. Walker, and names no husband
the form has no spouse field. She is identified as this Nettie on the Cleaveland maiden surname, the initial E. for Ellen, the Nebraska birthplace and the shared Mount Olivet burial, not on a statement in the document. Her 1971 death notice supplies the tie the certificate lacks: it names her children S1553.
Probable
Probable Family statement: a granddaughter of J. D. Walker recalls that J. D. and Nettie both later remarried “to a couple they knew”
J. D. married Ida, and Nettie married that couple's husband, who died soon after; Nettie then married Guy Walker S1315. This matches this site's own research lead above: Nettie married at Denton in 1940 as “Mrs. Nettie E. Jerkins,” and J. D.'s second wife was Ida Sophie Hillmer Jerkins Walker — the same Jerkins surname on both sides suggests the couple's husband was a Mr. Jerkins, Ida's former husband. Weak or missing: no marriage or divorce record yet for either remarriage, and the middle husband's given name is still unknown. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → The given name of her Mr. Jerkins is now probably found: Ida’s first husband was James Norman Jerkins, a farmer born at Thomaston, Texas, still married to Ida in 1920 S1447 S1448 S1449. Weak: no record yet shows Nettie married to him; the link still rests on the family statement and the shared surname. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Record1930
The NUMIDENT's "NETTIE CLEVLAND" is Cleveland. The 1930 census of Precinct 2, Jackson County, Texas enumerates Daniel J. and Nettie E. Walker with their children Mary, Olan, Clarence Melvin and Robert J
the household Melvin was born into at Lolita S87. ⚠️ The index spelling is still what it is, and should not be silently normalised when searching S38

He was born 10 March 1890 at China Spring, McLennan County and died 30 July 1964 at Ganado; she was born 29 November 1896 in Nebraska and died 25 November 1971 at White Settlement.
Death1964
His obituary (Edna Herald, 6 August 1964): buried Lolita Cemetery (Psencik Funeral Home, First Baptist Church, Lolita, Rev. H. O. Clarence Melvin Walker); daughter Mrs. Mary Bradley of Fort Worth, his daughter (new married name); brother Rob Walker (Lolita); sisters Mrs. Naomi Rogers (Palacios), Mrs. Ruth Moody (Lolita), Mrs. Willie Petrich (Angleton) — 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild S1304. The Jackson County cemetery index confirms his burial at Lolita Cemetery S1314.
Military1917
His 1917 draft card, as Daniel Jones Walker of Lolita, gives the same birth, 10 March 1890 at China Springs; he was a general laborer for Milton Cleavland, Nettie's father, and supported a wife and two children S393.
Census1910
In 1910, aged 20 and entered as “John”, a farm laborer in his parents' house on Perryman Avenue, Palacios, with his brother Robert T. S406. A 1923 Jackson County birth certificate for a daughter names the father as D. Jona Walker, 33, born McLennan County, and Nettie E., 26, born Nebraska S407.
Record1920
The Texas birth index files Melvin's birth (5 November 1920, Jackson County, certificate 61632) as the infant of Jonah Walker, the name he went by Confirmed S943.
Census1942
In 1942, as Mrs. D. J. Walker of Lolita, Ida swore the corrected birth certificate of her son Dock Richard Jerkins, born at Yorktown on 16 December 1917, giving her maiden name as Ida Sophia Hillmer, born at Shiner S1447
Death1964
Confirmed A second obituary, in the Victoria Advocate of 31 July 1964 (p. 8), calls him Jonah Daniel Walker, 74, retired farmer and a long-time resident of Lolita, and prints his birth date, March 10, 1890; it names the same wife, children, brother and sisters as the Edna Herald S1588. The rest was read from the newspaper page text (OCR); the survivors’ line has since been read from the page image and names the three sisters as Mrs. Naomi Rogers of Palacios, Mrs. Ruth Moody of Lolita and Mrs. Willie Petrich, of Angleton. Named as the parents of Clarence Melvin Walker in his Social Security NUMIDENT entry
a government record, whose parent fields come from his own SS-5 application rather than from any tree S38

Father of Mary
Children
Father of William
Parents1953
His mother's own obituary (Edna Herald, 8 January 1953) names her husband in full as William Bernard Walker, married at Waco, died June 1914
matching his death certificate date of 27 June 1914 S1305, which upgrades William Bernard Walker as her husband to Confirmed. His link as Daniel Jonah's own father is PROBABLE-strong: the mother is confirmed, her obituary names W. B. as her husband and “D. J. Walker” as her son, and the 1910 census shows Daniel in W. B.'s Palacios household S406; weak: no record names W. B. explicitly as Daniel Jonah's father, and the marriage date is unknown against Daniel Jonah's 1890 birth. Collateral siblings (children of Nancy Jane × William Bernard, named in both obituaries): Rob / “R. T.” Walker (Lolita; Palacios airport manager, 1953), Naomi Walker Rogers (Palacios), Ruth Walker Moody (Lolita), Willie Walker Petrich (Lake Jackson/Angleton) S1304S1305.
Parents1910
Daniel's mother is now found: Nancy Jane Higginbotham Walker Confirmed S331S210. His father is probably William B. “Willie B.” Walker Probable confirm or correct →: in 1910 Daniel, entered as “John”, 20, lived in the Palacios household headed by Willie B. Walker S406. That is a name on a census page, not a birth or death record; William B.'s own 1914 death certificate is now read: born 11 April 1857, died 27 June 1914 at Lolita, son of Daniel Walker and Mary J. Brass or Bross S787; when this was added on 27 September 2026 the link to Daniel Jonah rested on the 1910 census alone; it now also has the 1900 household below S808 and his mother's 1953 obituary, which names W. B. as her husband and D. J. as her son S1305, but no record yet names W. B. as Daniel Jonah's father (updated 5 October 2026). The 1900 census of Jackson County has a son Jackson J., 10, born March 1890, in Willie B. Walker's household, Daniel Jonah's birth month and year, but the given name does not match, so it supports the link without settling it S808. Willie's own parents were probably Daniel Green Walker and Mary Jane Bross. Nettie's are now named on a primary record: her death certificate gives her father as Melton Cleaveland and her mother as Maude Melville Warner S145
neither has a card here yet, and neither is confirmed by a second source. The tree's "Desa Hodges, b. 1888" for Nettie's mother would make the mother eight years old, and is rejected rather than corrected.
Marriage1892
His second wife, Ida S. Walker, was born Ida Sophie Wilhelmine Hillmer on 16 June 1892 near Shiner, Texas, and baptized on 11 August 1892 at Zion Lutheran Church, Charlottenburg, the daughter of Heinrich Hillmer and Marie, née Meier S1445
Marriage1910
Ida’s first husband was James Norman Jerkins, a farmer born at Thomaston, Texas. In April 1910 they were renting a farm in Precinct 8, DeWitt County, married about a year, with their infant son Alvin, and her widowed mother Mary Hillmer and sister Laura in the same dwelling S1448; in January 1920 they were in San Antonio, Norman working on the street cars and Ida a clerk, with Monroe, Beatrice, Mabell and D. R. S1449

⚠️ Her birth date is not settled. The 29 November 1896 above is the 1930 census reading S87; her 1971 Texas death certificate says 27 November 1897 S145. Two days and one year apart. Item 8 of a death certificate is informant-supplied, seventy-four years after the fact, so neither date is settled and both stay up until a Nebraska birth record decides. Her own card carries the same hedge.
Probable
Probable Family statement: a granddaughter of his recalls that he and his first wife Nettie Cleveland both later remarried “to a couple they knew”
he married Ida (Ida S. Walker, also buried at Lolita), and Nettie married that couple's husband, who died soon after S1315. Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Ida was very probably the “Eda M.” Hillmer, 7, born June 1892, in the Yoakum household of her father Henry P. Hillmer, a German-born saloonist, and her mother Mary M. in 1900, with her brothers Felix F. and Frank H. and her sister Laura A. Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In 1940 he was probably D. J. Walker, 50, born Texas, a farmer renting a dry farm in Jackson County, where he had also lived in 1935, with his wife Ida, 48, born Texas. It puts his remarriage to Ida between 1930 and 1940. Weak: initials only. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1503
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → An Ancestry index (record 23934617) gives a Daniel Jonah Walker born on 10 March 1890 who died on 30 July 1964 at Ganado, matching this record’s dates. Weak: the index only; the image has not been read in full. What would settle it: reading the full image, which may also name his father.

Birth
His fuller given name "Benjamin La Roy B Peters" and a birthplace of Scott, Franklin County, Iowa rest on an online tree alone Probable S42
Census1950
In 1950 he was 44, a stationary fireman at the railway roundhouse, living at 1032 Duluth, Sioux Falls, with Selma and their children LeRoy, Marlene, Betty and Eileen Confirmed S953.
Military1940
His own 1940 draft card gives his birthplace as Alexander, Iowa, in Franklin County, and his employer as John Morrell & Co., the Sioux Falls meatpackers; he was 35, at 1810 E. 5th Street, and named his wife, Mrs. Selma Gertrude Peters Confirmed S962.
Record1952
In his own hand, on his 1952 Railroad Retirement Board card, he named his father Ben Peters, still living, and his mother, by her name before marriage, Edna Osborn, who had died. He was 46, at 1032 No. Duluth Ave., Sioux Falls, and had just become a carman for the Omaha Road Confirmed S965. His parents' card links stay Probable for now; this is a second original naming them, beside the 1910 census.
Census1920
In January 1920, 14 and entered as La Roy B., he was the son in his mother Edna B.’s household in Florida Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, with his sisters Eva M., 16, and Hazel F., 9 (born Oklahoma), and his brothers Clifford L., 12, and Russell R., 3 months (born South Dakota) Confirmed S1052. His father heads the household on the previous sheet, which has not been read.

note added on what the family book “Dad Called Me Bo” says of his parents, reported by LaVonne Danielson (S1765); nothing else changed, and his father’s birth year stays 1881.

Family

Parents1910
His parents are now on records. In 1910, aged 4 and entered as Benjamin L. A., he was the son in the household of Benjamine Peters, 28, a farmer born in Iowa of German-born parents, and Edna B., 26, born Indiana, married seven years, at Vernon township, Kay County, Oklahoma, with his sister Eva M. and brother Clifford L. S659. With the 1903 Franklin County marriage of Benjamin Peters and Edna B. Orsborn, that confirms both.
Parents1903
His grandparents now have their own cards. His father Benjamin's parents were John Peters and Sophia Hermann, and his mother Edna's were John W. Orsborn and Armenia Howard, all four named on his parents' 1903 Franklin County marriage return S791; his father's 1957 death certificate names John Peters and Sophia Herman again S785.
Children2009
His son LaRoy Peters and LaRoy’s wife Adelaine compiled a family book, “Dad Called Me Bo” (2009), and his granddaughter LaVonne Danielson reported what it says of his parents on 12 October 2026 S1765: his mother Edna Blanche Orsborn Peters, born 7 May 1884 in Indiana; his father Benjamin Peters, born 12 December 1882 in Black Hawk County, Iowa; married 1 April 1903 at Franklin, Iowa. The records agree on his mother’s birth S784, on the marriage S791 and on the place, Cedar Falls being in Black Hawk County. They differ on the year of his father’s birth: the book and the 1957 death certificate say 1882 S785; his father’s own 1942 draft card, the 1900 census and the marriage return say 1881 S786S660, and 1881 stands here. The book is family testimony, and no page of it has been read by us.

SELLAND is the maiden name, and it is Norwegian. Two independently published obituaries, eight years apart, from funeral homes in two different states, both spell it Selland S40
Census1910
The 1910 census image, read in full, shows the whole family at Brandt Township: Mons, 41, who came from Norway in 1889 and owned his farm free; Julia, 39, mother of five children, all living; and Ida, 10, Andrew, 8, Selma, 6, Tilla, 4, and Oscar, 1 Confirmed S951. Death
The obituary of her son LaRoy names "Benjamin and Selma (Selland) Peters"; the obituary of her daughter Betty names "Benjamin, Sr. and Selma (Selland) Peters" and lists "Dorothy Walker of Fort Worth, TX" among the siblings
which is what proves this is the same family and not a same-name collision S40
The Norway trips in Dorothy's obituary are the tell. She and her sister Shirley visited the "homeland of their maternal grandparents" — a sentence written before anyone knew the maternal grandparents were called Selland, and which turned out to name the right branch S36.

Parents1868
Her father Mons came from Røldal, Hordaland, on the parish's own record
baptised there 21 June 1868, entered in the out-migration register for "Dakota, Amerika" in 1889 S74S75. See the Selland chain in the deep lines.
Marriage1925
The church's own marriage register for her wedding on 16 November 1925 names her parents as M. T. Selland & Julia, and the groom's as Benj. Peters & Edna; Tillie Selland and Hazel and Mildred Peters stood witness S774. It is the first record written at the time that ties her to Mons Thorson Selland and Julia Lone; until now that link rested on family testimony and the Røldal registers.
Parents1918
A second record written at the time: her confirmation on 21 July 1918, entry 9 on p. 112 of a Lutheran confirmation register, gives her birth as 1 October 1903 and her parents as “Mons og Julia Selland”; her brother Andreas, entry 6 on the same page, has the same parents S813. The page does not name the congregation.
Parents1903
Her parents now have their own cards: Mons Selland and Julia (Lone) Selland. FamilySearch's South Dakota birth index gives her birth as 1 October 1903 in Deuel County, parents Mons Selland and Julia Lone S819, the first entry found that gives her mother's maiden name (an index row, so Probable confirm or correct →); a Lutheran baptism index has her baptised on 15 November 1903 in Deuel County S820, and in 1910 she was in her parents' household at Brandt, Deuel County S821.

Burial1890
The two dates above now have a second independent source: the federal headstone application filed after his death carries 10/18/1890 and 11/20/73, beside the cemetery memorial S142 S34
Birth1917
He registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 as Will Kretchmar, signing Willie Kretschmar. The card says he was born 18 October 1890 in Travis County, lived at Del Valle, and was a labourer for H. Meyer at Elroy. He was single and claimed exemption for “Heart Trouble”, but he was in uniform by September S435. His son Raymond Willie Kretschmar was born in Travis County on 7 October 1929. The state birth index names Willie F. Kretschmar as the father and Liessi Ladusch as the mother S436. Survivors as printed: his wife, Liessi; a son, Raymond W. Kretschmar of Nederland; two daughters, Lucille Caffey of Austin and Dorothy Ellis of Quantico, Virginia; his brother Max of Elroy and his sister Minnie Reininger of Austin; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Friday 23 November at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, with burial in Austin Memorial Park, under Cook-Walden Funeral Home S1611. The notice printed on Wednesday 21 November says he died “Tuesday”, which is 20 November, the date on his headstone application; 22 November is the day the obituary ran. The notices name no parents. ⚠️ The service is under six months, and the form does not say why. His headstone application records an enlistment date and a discharge date with nothing between them
no decorations, no overseas service, no discharge type. The 345th Field Artillery belonged to the 90th Division, organised at Camp Travis in Texas, which would suit a Travis County man; that is context, not on the document, and is not claimed here S142

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → She probably died on Saturday 31 March 1990, not 3 March. Two sources disagree. Her obituary in the Austin American-Statesman of Sunday 1 April 1990 (p. 26) says “Liessi L. Kretschmar, age 92, of Wimberley, formerly of Austin, died Saturday, March 31, 1990” S1590. The transcription of her gravestone on Find a Grave gives 3 March 1990 S34. The obituary is the better reading: it ran the day after, with the funeral set for the Monday; she was born on 28 March 1898, so she was 92 only after 28 March; and no notice for her was found in the papers of 3–13 March. Weak: both dates fall on a Saturday, the stone itself has not been seen, and no death certificate or Texas Death Index entry has been read
either would settle it. The obituary also gives her birth as 28 March 1898 at New Ulm, her church as St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Austin, where the funeral was held on Monday 2 April, and burial in Austin Memorial Park. It says she was preceded in death by her husband Will F. Kretschmar and her son Raymond, and survived by her daughters Dorothy Ellis and Lucille Caffey. The Peters family, Chicago to Sioux Falls

Confirmed

Six children, reconstructed from three obituaries that agree

  • Six children — LaRoy's obituary says he grew up "with his five sisters." All six are named consistently across three separately published obituaries: Dorothy (1926), Shirley (1927), LaRoy Jr. (1930), Betty (1937), Marlene and Eileen S40
  • The birthplaces trace the move: Dorothy and Shirley born at Chicago (1926, 1927), LaRoy at Marathon, Iowa (1930), Betty at Sioux Falls, South Dakota (1937) S40
More · 3 further facts
  • So the family went Chicago → Iowa → Sioux Falls about 1932 — "after moving there with his parents when he was two" — which is exactly the "first eighteen years in Sioux Falls" of Dorothy's own obituary S36S40
  • The parents retired to Schertz, Texas, died there in 1991 and 1993, and were returned to Clear Lake, South Dakota — Selma's birthplace — for burial S38S41
  • Dorothy's brother LaRoy J. "Pete" Peters died 25 January 2021 and her sister Betty Jane Sanders on 10 September 2013; both death dates appear independently on the parents' memorials and in their own published obituaries S40S41
⚠️ The generation above this couple is uneven. Benjamin Peters and Edna Blanche Orsborn (his parents) are the bride and groom on the 1 April 1903 Franklin County, Iowa marriage return, read from the image S791, and their link down to Pete Sr is on a record too: the 1910 census of Kay County, Oklahoma lists him, aged 4, as their son S659 — so they are Confirmed. On the Selland side, Mons and Julia Selland are named as Gertie's parents in two church registers written at the time, her 1918 confirmation S813 and her 1925 marriage S774. The Røldal parish registers, read by eye on 16 September 2026, give his birth on 9 May 1868 and his baptism on 21 June to Thore Thoresen Selland and Ingeborg Ivarsdatter S74 and his departure for "Dakota, Amerika" in 1889 S75. His wife Julia’s maiden name, Lone, is Probable, and her birth date is unsettled (April 1870 in the 1900 census and the family book, 22 January 1870 in the Røldal baptism taken to be hers): a Lone woman born 1870 left Røldal in the same 1889 party, and has not been shown to be her. A South Dakota birth index row for Gertie names her mother Julia Lone S819, but the register image behind it has not been read.
The Deuel County marriage of 16 November 1925 is now a state record, certificate 109784, solemnised at Brandt, both parties of Clear Lake, the groom 20 and the bride 22 S71 Confirmed. It was expected to name both sets of parents and close the generation above in one stroke. It does not: the South Dakota form of that year has no parentage field at all. It settles the date and the maiden name, and nothing more — which is worth saying plainly, because the prediction printed here was wrong.

B. Bruce, for many years a rural mail carrier, which is what the 1910 census page calls Charles Brooks Bruce of Cuero S1758S1358. It stays Probable because her own records are indexes and the machine-read text of newspaper pages: no image of them has been read, and none of them names her mother.
Show detailsHide details

Evidence: The index of her Texas death record gives Mary Bessie Barnard, born on 20 October in Texas, died on 1 November 1942 at Houston, father Charlie Bruce; the Find a Grave index gives her birth on 20 October 1894, the same day of death and her burial at Cuero; the Houston Chronicle of 4 November 1942 calls her the former Miss Mamie Bruce, daughter of the late C. B. Bruce, for many years a rural mail carrier (S1758); the 1900 and 1910 census pages of the Bruce household list a daughter Mary B. and Mary (S1357, S1358); a Texas county marriage index lists John F. Barnard and “Marnie” B. Bruce in DeWitt County (S1758). The evidence is strong. Weak or missing: Her own records are indexes or the machine-read text of newspaper pages, and no image of them has been read; her year of birth is given two ways, 1894 and 1892, and 1894 cannot stand beside her sister Dora Inez, born in August 1894 by the 1900 census; her mother is not named in any of her records; the marriage index line gives no date and spells her name “Marnie”. Life

Burial1942
Mary Bessie Bruce Barnard, called Mamie, died on 1 November 1942 at Houston, Harris County, Texas. She was born in Texas on 20 October; the year is given two ways. The Find a Grave index gives 1894, and her age at death, 48, and the indexes of the 1920 and 1940 censuses agree with it; that year is followed in the heading of this card and on the Ancestry tree. The index of the 1900 census of DeWitt County gives October 1892. The 1900 page also lists her sister Dora Inez, the second child, as born in August 1894, and two sisters cannot have been born two months apart, so one of the two readings of 1894 is wrong; the image of her death certificate or of her gravestone would settle it. The day and place of death are from the index of the Texas death records and the Texas Death Index; the Houston Chronicle of 2 November 1942 says Mrs. Mary Bessie Barnard, 48, of 1122 East Twenty-Seventh, had lived in Houston for 19 years S1758.
Burial1942
The notice of 4 November 1942, sent from Cuero, says services were held there on the Tuesday, and the notice of 2 November says her body was to be sent to Cuero; the Find a Grave index gives her burial at Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas. The burial is Probable: no stone or cemetery record has been read, and no cemetery is named. The Find a Grave index puts her husband’s grave at Cuero as well, in 1975 S1758.
Census2026
History of this card. 12 Oct 2026
card written when she was added to the family tree as a daughter of Charles Brooks Bruce and Ida Alice Montgomery, from the death and grave indexes, the 1900 census index and two Houston Chronicle notices of November 1942 (S1758). Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — her husband was added to the Ancestry tree and the county of the marriage added from a marriage index (S1758); the card said he was not yet on the tree. The grade is unchanged: nothing was read from an image. Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — the Mrs. Inez Morris of her obituary linked to her sister Dora Inez, as Probable (S1758).

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Daughter of Charles Brooks Bruce and Ida Alice Montgomery Bruce. Sister of Dora Inez Bruce and Alma Kathryn Bruce Gordon. She is probably the Mary B., aged 7, who heads the list of children on the 1900 census page of their house, and the Mary of the 1910 page S1357S1358, and the Mrs. F. Bernard of Houston of her mother’s death notices in 1924 S1730. Her own obituary names as survivors a brother, M. B. (Millard) Bruce of San Antonio, and three sisters, Mrs. R. Terrell of San Antonio, Mrs. Jeff Gordon and Mrs. Inez Morris of San Marcos S1758. Mrs. Inez Morris is probably her sister Dora Inez Bruce: the forename and the place are all that tie them, so that is Probable.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Wife of John Frederick Barnard (1 December 1890 – 10 May 1975). The evidence is strong: a Texas county marriage index lists John F. Barnard and “Marnie” B. Bruce in DeWitt County, Texas, a spelling taken here as Mamie, and her obituary of 2 November 1942 names her husband as John F. Barnard. The index line carries no date, so the date of the marriage has not been read, and the register page has not been read from an image. His own dates, born in Texas and died at Houston, are from the index of the Texas death records and the Find a Grave index. He is on the Ancestry tree; he has no card here S1758. Her son is not named here.
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: her own records are indexes or the machine-read text of newspaper pages, and no image of them has been read; her year of birth is given as 1894 and as 1892, and 1894 does not fit beside her sister’s birth in August 1894; her mother is not named in any of her records; her marriage is known from an index line that gives DeWitt County and no date, with her name spelled “Marnie”. Life

Birth1871
Born 5 January 1871, Alabama; died 5 May 1949, Austin, Texas; buried Kyle Cemetery
Census1930
In 1930 at Kyle, Hays County, she was Anna, 59, born in Texas of Alabama-born parents, wife of Henry L. Gold, 58, a farmer who owned his place, with Vernon, 22, and Hazel, 15 S711. In 1940, still at Kyle, she was Anna B., 69, born in Alabama, and Henry L., 68, gave the answers S712.
Census1900
In 1900, in Precinct 1 of Bastrop County, she was Annie Gold, born January 1871 in Alabama, wife of Henry Gold, born August 1871 in Texas to German-born parents. They had married about 1892 and had four children: James E., Lela E., Alva V. and Henry R. Next door was John W. Caffey, born January 1860 in Alabama S730. In 1920, in Hays County, Henry L. and Anna Gold had Myrtle, Vernon and Hazel B. at home S731. Her son James E. Gold is probably the “J. E. Gold” who gave the answers on her 1949 death certificate S480 Probable confirm or correct →. What is weak: the certificate does not say how J. E. was related to her.
Census1910
In April 1910 she was Anna, wife of Henry L. Gold, a renting farmer, in Justice Precinct 5 of Caldwell County, Texas; she had borne 7 children, 5 of them living, and at home were Elmo, 16, Eva, 15, Alvie, 13, Myrtle, 8, and Vernon, 2. Her age is entered as 30, ten years short of her 1871 birth Confirmed S1092
Death1949
Her obituary, sent from Kyle on 7 May 1949, calls her Mrs. Anna Bell Gold, widow of Henry Gold. She died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clarence Whitaker, in Austin, and her funeral was held at Kyle on Friday, 6 May. She left three daughters, Mrs. J. M. Whittington of Kyle, Mrs. Clarence Whitaker and Mrs. Gus Woodall of Austin; three sons, Vernon Gold of Kyle, Elmo Gold of Elgin and Alvie Gold of Texas City; and two brothers Confirmed S1552. Two living brothers in May 1949 fits Hooper Van Caffey’s sons, since C. B. Caffey had died the year before, but the paper names neither brother and no parent, so her parentage stays probable. A Kyle or San Marcos paper of May 1949, not yet found, might name them

Family

Marriage1930
Married Henry L. (Henry Lewis) Gold: the 1930 and 1940 censuses and her son Vernon's birth record all name him (below). J. E. Gold, shown here before as her husband, is the informant on her 1949 death certificate, which does not say how he was related to her S480
Children1908
Her son Vernon Clyde Gold was born in rural Caldwell County on 3 April 1908. A 1969 amendment to his birth certificate, sworn by his sister Lola E. Whittington of Kyle, names his parents as Henry Lewis Gold and Anna Caffey S696. The 1930 and 1940 censuses agree (below).
Children1892
Her son Elmo now has a card of his own: James Elmo Gold (1892–1981). The index of his death certificate names his parents as Henry Gold and Anna “Gaffey” S1625.
Marriage1911
Two of her daughters are traced to their marriages in Caldwell County. Eva Gold, entered as “Evia”, married John Whittington on 18 December 1911; Myrtle Gold married August R. Woodall at Lockhart on 14 November 1920 Confirmed S1656. They are the Mrs. J. M. Whittington of Kyle and the Mrs. Gus Woodall of Austin of her 1949 obituary. Both entries were read from the index, not the register, and neither names the bride’s parents. Each now has a card of her own: Eva Gold and Myrtle Gold.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Her son Alvie Van Gold, born 11 September 1896, died January 1986 in Texas. Evidence: he is Alvie, 13, son, in her 1910 household S1092, and her 1949 obituary names a son Alvie Gold of Texas City S1552; the indexes of his two draft registrations and the Social Security Death Index give one birth date, and the 1917–18 card names a relative “Annie Gold” S1645. What is weak: the draft cards were read from the index, not the images, so “relative” is not shown to mean mother; Texas City in 1949 is not bridged to Elgin, where he registered in 1942. The draft card image or his 1986 obituary would settle it. He now has a card of his own: Alvie Van Gold. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.

Life

Birth1865
Born 7 October 1865, Mobile, Alabama; died 15 February 1948 at the Texas Confederate Home for Men, Austin; buried at Elgin. ⚠️ His birthplace is given two ways: his death certificate says Mobile S478, and his obituary says Montgomery, Alabama S1551. Both are stated here and neither is settled; an Alabama record from his childhood would decide it
Census1940
In 1940 he was 74 and owned his house at Elgin, Bastrop County, the same one as in 1935. With him were his wife Frances H., 67, born in Texas, who gave the answers, and Cordelia Harris, 77, a widow born in Alabama S715.
Census1900
The census has him at Elgin and nearby in Bastrop County, Texas, for thirty years. In June 1900 he was C. B. Caffey, 34, born October 1865 in Alabama, renting a farm, married ten years to H. F., born August 1872 in Texas, with Roy, Olly, Ethel, Myrtis and Earl Confirmed S1055. In 1910 he was “Charley B. Coffey”, 43, owning a mortgaged farm at Elgin, with Fannie and eight living children, Clayborn E., Ollie, Ethel, Myrtis, Earl, Corinne and Marie S1056. In 1920 he was renting, 54, with Fannie H., William O., Earl B., Corine, Mari H., Ralph and Ruth E. S1057. In 1930 he was 64, a house painter who owned his home, first married at 23, with Frances H., first married at 16, and Ralph, Marie and Ruth S1058. So he married Fannie (Frances H.) about 1890. The 1920 census alone gives his birthplace as Texas.
Death1948
His obituaries of February 1948 call him C. B. Caffey, 82, of Austin for four years and of Elgin before that, and say he died in an Austin hospital early on Sunday. He was buried from the Miller Mortuary at Elgin on the Monday, the Methodist pastor officiating, in the Elgin cemetery. The Taylor paper adds that he was born in Montgomery, Alabama, came to Texas at the age of 11 and settled near Elgin, and belonged to the Elgin Methodist Church. He left his wife and seven children: Mrs. Robert Carter Jr. of Elgin, Mrs. Wilcox Ford Sr. of Taylor, Mrs. Myrtis Austin of Austin, Mrs. Walter Johnson of Austin, Mrs. Ed Leshikar of Velasco, Ollie Caffey of Elgin and Ralph Caffey of Almeda Confirmed S1551. The Austin papers print one daughter as “Mrs. Myrtle Desby”; the censuses call her Myrtis. The obituaries name no parent, brother or sister, so his parentage stays probable

The place and the father fit him, and the 1910 census has a daughter Marie, 2 S1056; but his wife is H. What is weak or missing: his father-daughter link and his birth are settled from images, and his 1917 draft card gives “Orbin Oliver Piland” in full. His death date and his parents still rest on the index of his death certificate, whose image has not been read, and where he died has not been read. The 1920 census writes his name “Orvin O.” and Ancestry indexes it “Arvin P.”

Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED daughter of Edward Raymond Piland and Virginia Francis “Jennie” Montgomery, and a sister of Orbin Oliver Piland. The index of her Texas death certificate names her father as Edward Ray Piland and her mother as Francis Montgomery, and the index of the 1900 census has Myrtle as a daughter in the household of Edward and Virginia Piland in Gonzales County, with her brothers Orbin and Ray S1629. In 1910 a Myrtle was still in Edward R. Piland’s household in Travis County, by a census read from the image S1025. Her mother’s obituary in The Austin American of 26 September 1927 names a surviving daughter, “Mrs. A. P. Nance of Austin” S1574. The death certificate, the 1900 census and the marriage entry are read from their indexes only; the images are not yet read.

Born on 20 June 1889 at Pilgrim, Gonzales County, Texas; died on 2 July 1942 at Buda, Hays County, Texas, both by the index of her death certificate, which calls her Myrtle May Nance S1629. The 1900 census index gives her birth as June 1890, a year later

Family

Marriage1912
Wife of Albert Pate Nance Confirmed (indexes only, images not read): a Travis County marriage index has Myrtle Piland and A. P. Nance in 1912 S1629; the index of his Texas death certificate names his spouse as Myrtle Piland, and the Social Security Applications and Claims Index names her as Myrtle Mae Pilant S1626. Their children are not named here

Open questions

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the three new records are read from indexes, not images; the 1900 census and the death certificate differ by a year on her birth; the day and month of the 1912 marriage are not in the index. Reading the death certificate image would settle the birth year and name the informant. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Research status

Research status: PROBABLE for her own birth date and birthplace, which rest on the index of her death certificate S907; her links to her daughter and to her parents are graded separately and are both Confirmed. Her place as mother of Alice Lorene Piland is read from two census images: in 1920 in Hays County Alice L., 5, is the daughter in the household where Mabel is the wife, and in 1930 at Austin the relationship column names Alice Lorena, 15, as the daughter of Mable Piland, head S924 Confirmed. Her place as a daughter of Dan Crutcher Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby is Confirmed: the 1900 census, read from the image, has Mable, 4, as the daughter in their household at Waco S906; the 1930 census, read from the image, enters Virginia Logue as the mother of Mable Piland, head S924; the 1956 death notice of her sister Ethel Florence names “Mrs. Mable Piland of Austin” as a sister, with their mother, Mrs. Alice Logue, then living S1710, and her own obituary of 1961 names three Logue brothers, two of whom, Lee Marvin and Halbert, are Confirmed sons of Dan on their own cards S1573. What is weak: her sister Leola’s obituary of 1938 names a sister at Austin but prints the surname “Powell” S1571, no notice names Mabel’s parents outright, and her own death certificate is read from its index only, so her birth at Galveston on 31 October 1895 stays Probable until the image is read. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence; added to the tree on 30 September 2026. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Evidence: In 1920 in Hays County, read from the image, Mabel, 24, is the wife of Orvin O. Piland with their daughter Alice L., 5; in 1930 at Austin, read from the image, Mable Piland, 34, a widow, heads the household with her daughter Alice Lorena, 15, and her mother Virginia Logue, 62; in 1950 she is Mabel L. Piland, mother-in-law, in Thomas O. Caffey's household; the index of her Texas death certificate gives her birth on 31 October 1895 at Galveston and her father as D. C. Logue; her parents are Confirmed from the 1900 and 1930 census images, and her death on 13 April 1961 from the index and her obituary; the 1956 death notice of her sister Ethel Florence Lewis names Mrs. Mable Piland of Austin as a sister (S1710), and her own 1961 obituary names three Logue brothers (S1573). Weak or missing: The death certificate is read from its index only, not the image; it gives Galveston as her birthplace while the 1900 census has the family in Waco; a FamilySearch birth index for her daughter calls her Mabel Larrimore Logue, and the Larrimore name has not been explained. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Life

Birth1895
Born 31 October 1895 at Galveston, Texas, by the index of her death certificate S907; the 1900 census gives October 1895 in Texas S906
Death1961
Died 13 April 1961 at Austin, Travis County, by the index of her Texas death certificate S907; her obituary, printed the next day, says she died on the Thursday, which was 13 April S1573 Confirmed
Census1932
In the 1932–33 Austin city directory she is “Piland Mabel L Mrs”, a saleswoman at the F & W Grand Silver Store, rooming at 403 West 14th Street Confirmed S1091
Death1961
Her obituary in The Austin American of 14 April 1961 calls her Mrs. Mabel L. L. Piland, 65, of 4101 Ramsey, the house of her daughter Alice and son-in-law Thomas Osborn Caffey, who is the householder there in the 1952 city directory S1691, and a Baptist who had lived in Austin for 40 years; she died in a local hospital on Thursday and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery; her daughter, Mrs. T. O. Caffey of Austin, survived her, with three brothers in California, Marvin and Halbert Logue and Q. Logue Confirmed S1573. Probable confirm or correct → It does not change her parentage: the notice names no parent. Evidence: the three brothers are sons in D. C. Logue’s census households, and Q. Logue is Victor Quillen Logue. Weak: her death certificate is still read from its index only. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. Her grandsons are named in print and are not given here.
Census2026
History of this card: 11 Oct 2026
her place as a daughter of Dan Crutcher Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby raised from Probable to Confirmed (1900 and 1930 census images, the 1956 notice S1710 and her 1961 obituary S1573); the death date marked Confirmed from the obituary; her birth date and place stay Probable.

Family

Marriage1920
Wife of Orbin Oliver Piland: in 1920 in Hays County, read from the image, “Orvin O. Piland”, 26, heads the household with his wife Mabel, 24, and their daughter Alice L., 5 S910; in 1922 the Austin directory lists “Piland Orbin O (Mabel)” at 104 Chicon S941
Children1914
Mother of Alice Lorene Piland, born 20 November 1914 at Kyle, Hays County, by FamilySearch’s index of Texas births, which names her parents as Orbin Oliver Piland and Mabel Larrimore Logue S923; Alice married Thomas Osborn Caffey in Austin on 15 December 1935 S621
Parents1900
Daughter of Dan Crutcher Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby: her death certificate names her father as D. C. Logue S907; in 1900 “Mable”, 4, born October 1895 in Texas, is in the Waco household of D. C. Logue and his wife Virginia A. S906; in 1910 Mabel, 14, is with Dan C. and Virginia A. Logue at Cuero S1080; in 1930 her widowed mother Virginia Logue lives with her S924 Confirmed

Siblings1900

Open questions

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the death certificate is read from its index only, so her birth at Galveston and her father’s name have not been seen on that image; the 1900 census that puts her in the Logue household at Waco is read from the image, and her elder sister Leola’s death certificate, read from the image, puts Leola’s own birth at Galveston in November 1892 S1113, so the family seems to have lived at Galveston in the early 1890s, between the 1890 Alabama marriage and the 1900 Waco census; FamilySearch’s birth index for her daughter calls her “Mabel Larrimore Logue”, and where the Larrimore name comes from has not been found

Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED as a daughter of Dan Crutcher Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby Confirmed. Her obituary names “her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Louge of Sherman” S1571, so two records made at her death state her parentage. Earlier evidence: her Texas death certificate, read from the image, names her father as “D. C. Louge”, born in Tennessee, and her mother as “Virginaa Alice” Confirmed S1113; she is Leola in D. C. Logue’s household at Waco in 1900 S906 and Leola, 17, with Dan C. and Virginia A. Logue at Cuero in 1910 S1080. What is still weak: the informant was her husband, who gives her mother’s birthplace as Texas where the censuses say Tennessee, and her father’s own identity rests partly on a Find a Grave memorial. Life

Birth1892
Born 28 November 1892 at Galveston, Texas, by her death certificate S1113. Her younger sister Mabel Logue Piland was also born at Galveston, in 1895 S907, so the family seems to have lived there between the 1890 Alabama marriage S908 and the 1900 Waco census S906
Residence1938
She had lived in Austin for 20 years, on Manor Road, and was a housewife. She died at Seton Infirmary, Austin, on 12 February 1938, aged 45, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, the next day S1113
Death1938
Her obituary in The Austin American of 13 February 1938 says Mrs. Leola Piland, 45, died on Saturday; it names her husband Ruben Piland, “her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Louge of Sherman”, a sister at Austin and another, Mrs. H. R. Lewis, at Sherman, and her brothers Quillan, Marvin and Halbert Logue of Los Angeles; Hyltin Funeral Home; burial in Oakwood Cemetery Confirmed S1571. The Austin sister’s surname is printed “Powell” in the text read; she is taken to be Mabel Logue Piland. Her son is named in print and is not given here.

Life

Birth1902
Born 26 September 1902, by his two Second World War draft registrations, which give his birthplace as Atlanta, Georgia S1193 S1194; the 1940 census gives Texas, about 1903 S1195. The conflict is not resolved, and the tree leaves his birthplace blank
Census1940
In 1940 he lived in El Monte Judicial Township, Los Angeles County, with Ethel P. S1195; in 1942 he named D. C. Logue as his contact S1193, and in 1945 he registered at El Monte S1194
Death1978

Open questions

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: every record here is read from FamilySearch’s index, not the image; his birthplace is Georgia on the draft cards and Texas in 1940; his death rests on Find a Grave and the Social Security index, with no death certificate or obituary read; a 1978 card of thanks in the Batesville Guard, below, is the only newspaper notice found
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A card of thanks in the Batesville Guard of 7 September 1978, p. 3, is signed “The family of Victor Logue” and thanks Olmstead Funeral Home and the Rev. Bill Whitner S1676. It fits the death in Arkansas in August 1978 above. What is weak or missing: it was read as machine-read text, not from the page; it gives no age, no date, no relative’s name and no place of death, so the town where he died is not settled and none is entered. Open questions

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: his parents, Ed Lewis and Cora Alice Wilson, come only from his death certificate, where a son was the informant; that certificate and his own draft cards give his birth as 12 March 1890, against the 10 June 1890 of the Social Security index shown above. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the 1920 census gives his father born in Louisiana and his mother in Mississippi; the 1930 census reverses them. Neither is asserted here S1215 S1216
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → His mother was very probably Cora Woodson, born Mississippi about 1874: in 1910 Harry is entered as the son in her household, and she was in her second marriage with one child living. This supports the “Cora Alice” of his death certificate. Weak: the census calls him Woodson’s son and gives no maiden name for Cora. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1439

Life

Death1877
Confirmed Daughter of Edmund A. Cearley (1877–1954). In 1930 he was in her household at Austin, 52 and widowed, listed as Edmond A. Cearley, the father-in-law of the head, with two of her sisters S1376; the 1921 marriage licence gives her name as Miss Ruby E. Cearley S1444, and the census enters both her and Merrill as in their first marriage. Her mother is not in this record; the index of the 1910 census, not yet read from the image, lists her father’s wife as Georgia. Her sister Etta May Cearley Caughey (1901–1985), a daughter of the same father, has a card of her own, Probable S1751.
Census1929
In 1929 she and Merrill lived at 413 W. 37th, Austin S1429; in April 1940 at 4204 Sinclair Avenue, Austin, with their son S1377; and in 1950 on Barton Creek Road, Hays County S1430.

Cearley” with no card, is linked to his own card and the link regraded from Probable to Confirmed on the 1930 census page and the marriage licence (S1376, S1444). 12 Oct 2026 — a day of death added as Probable, from the death index and the grave index (S1722); until now the card gave none and held the 1982 index entry as only Possible. 12 Oct 2026 — her sister Etta May Cearley Caughey now has a card and is named (S1751).

Family

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → She was born in Texas about 1903. The 1930 census, read from the image, gives her age as 27 and her birthplace as Texas S1376, and the 1940 census gives 37 S1377. What is weak or missing: these are census ages, not a birth record, and no record of her birth has been found. Know more, or think this is wrong? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Ruby Edna Cearley Piland died on 15 June 1982 in Travis County, Texas. The evidence is strong: the Texas Death Index lists a Ruby Piland who died in Travis County on that day, and the Find a Grave index has an entry under her maiden and married names together, with the same day of death and a grave at Driftwood, Hays County, the county where she lived in 1950 S1722. The maiden name sets her apart from another Ruby Piland of the same age, who lived in Parker County. That entry gives her birthday as 22 November 1902, against the “about 1903” of the census ages; the year above is left as it is until a birth record is read. What is weak or missing: both records are indexes; no death certificate, obituary or gravestone has been read, and the death index gives no age and no husband. Know more, or think this is wrong? Use “Add to this record”.

Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED as a daughter of Charles Brooks Bruce and Ida Alice Montgomery Bruce. Her later life rests on one lead: she is probably the Mrs. Inez Morris of San Marcos named as a sister in the 1942 obituary of Mary Bessie Barnard. Two census pages, read from the images, list her in their house. In June 1900, in Precinct 1 of DeWitt County, Dora I., daughter, born August 1894, aged 5, is the second of four children, and her mother is entered with four children born and four living S1357. In April 1910, on East Main Street at Cuero, Inez, daughter, 15, is the second of six children, and her mother is entered with six born and six living S1358. No child had died and the second child is the same age on both pages, so Dora I. and Inez are one girl. The images were read on 4 October 2026 and were not opened again when this card was written.

History of this card. 12 Oct 2026
card written when she was added to the family tree, from the readings of the 1900 and 1910 census pages (S1357, S1358). 12 Oct 2026 — her sister Alma now has a card and is linked (S1752). Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — her sister Mary Bessie now has a card and is linked (S1758); the card said the surname she may have married into was not known, and now gives the Mrs. Inez Morris of that sister’s 1942 obituary as an unproved lead. Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — the Mrs. Inez Morris lead is now graded: Probable that she is Dora Inez, married name Morris by 1942 (S1758); the card had said that no marriage had been found and that the lead had not been followed.

Family

Parents1900
Daughter of Charles Brooks Bruce and Ida Alice Montgomery Bruce. In 1900 her brothers and sister in the house were Mary B., Orin M. and Millard; in 1910 they were Mary, Orie, Millard, Lena May and Alma. Mary is probably Mary Bessie Bruce Barnard (1894–1942) and Alma is probably Alma Kathryn Bruce Gordon (1906–1982); Orie, Millard and Lena May do not have cards.

Open questions

Not found
Dora Inez Bruce was born in Texas in August 1894. The month and year are from the 1900 census page; no record of her birth has been read, and the day is not known.
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: no record gives the two names together; the name Dora Inez is put together from “Dora I.” in 1900 and “Inez” in 1910. Probable confirm or correct → She is probably the Mrs. Inez Morris of San Marcos whom the Houston Chronicle of 2 November 1942 names among the sisters of Mary Bessie Bruce Barnard, beside Mrs. Jeff Gordon, who is her sister Alma, so her married name was probably Morris by 1942 S1758. That rests on a forename and a place in one family obituary, read as machine text and not from the page. Her husband, the marriage and her death have not been found, so no date of death is given; she is not in her parents’ house at Cuero in January 1920 S1402. Another Inez Bruce of the same age, born in the state of Georgia and living there all her life, is not her. Know more, or think this is wrong? Use “Add to this record”.

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → He married Velma Lucille Woods at Los Angeles; the index of California county marriages gives the groom’s parents as D C Logue and Virginia Alice “Hanby” S1564. The evidence is the index line and the wife Velma on his death certificate. Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: no census has been read that lists him in his parents’ household by name; the certificate calls his father “Doctor Crutcher”, the name the 1920 census also uses, and never Dan; whether he had children is not known, and none is named here. Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Born at Waco, Texas, on 6 February 1900, and died at Los Angeles on 25 November 1966. The evidence is the California Death Index entry for Hobert Logue, which gives that birth date, Texas, and his mother’s maiden name as “Hambey”; the 1945 draft card of Hobart Logue, born 6 February 1900 at Waco; and the 1930 census, which has him in one Los Angeles household with his brother Lee Marvin Logue S1581. What is weak or missing: all three are read from indexes, not images, so only an index ties the Halbert of the Texas censuses to the Hobert who died in 1966, and only an index gives the day of his birth and the date of his death
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: no record read names his father or mother in so many words

Life

Birth1878
Born 20 August 1878, Leipzig, Germany; Lizzie, the eldest, in the 1900 household S228
Death1951
Named as Lizzie Rojas in her father's obituary index S296; died 11 February 1951, Bishop, Nueces County, Texas S634
Death1951
Her death certificate, no. 9437, gives her death on 11 February 1951 at Route 2, Bishop, where she had lived 31 years, of heart disease. It names her father as “Frank Kretczehmas”, born Germany, that is Julius Franz Kretschmar. Her husband, Estanislao Rojas, was the informant, and the Cage-Piper Funeral Home took her to Kingsville S634.
Census1930
In 1930 she and Estanislao V. Rojas, 35, born Mexico, lived near Bishop in the Driscoll Ranch subdivision, Nueces County, with a daughter aged 15. Lizzie was 52, born Germany, German her mother tongue S639. The census's immigration year, 1909, cannot be right, since she was in her father's Texas household in 1900. In 1950 the couple were still in Nueces County, Estanislao 54 and Lizzie 72, with a boy of 9 listed as their son whose parents are both given as born in Mexico, so probably a grandson or foster son; that census's “born Mexico” for Lizzie is an error S640.

Marriage1912
Her husband was Estanislao Rojas, born in Monterrey, Mexico; they married at Austin on 21 September 1912 and had one child. She petitioned for naturalization at Corpus Christi on 17 June 1941, swearing that she had come to Baltimore on the SS America in October 1883 as “Lizze Kraetzschmar” S577. The petition's 1896 birth year for Estanislao is doubtful.
Parents1900
Her mother: probably Lena Kretschmar Probable confirm or correct →. In 1900, read from the image, Lizzie is “dau.” of the head, Fritz, and Lena is his wife, married 21 years, with eight children born and eight living S228. What is weak: the census relationship is to the head only; her naturalization gives her birth as August 1878 S577, a little before a marriage of about 1879, so she could be Lena's stepdaughter, and no record names her mother.

Family

Parents
Marriage1902
She married Christian F. Peterson, a farmer born in Louisiana of Danish parents, about 1902–03. In 1910 they farmed near Creedmoor, Travis County, and she had borne five children, all living: Ruth, Arthur, Lawrence, Annie and Julius S573; in 1920 the family also had Willie, probably the same son as Julius, and Nannie S574; in 1930 Nannie and Edna were at home S575; and by 1950 she and Christian lived in Austin S576. The 1950 census says she was born in Texas, against Germany in the three earlier censuses.

Research status

Research status: PROBABLE son of Julius Franz Kretschmar, the “Charley of Creedmoor” of his father’s obituary. Evidence: the index of Texas death certificate 49198 gives his father as Frank Kretchmar and a home in Austin S1646; Charlie is a son in the 1910 household S433 and in the obituary S1633. Added to the family tree on 10 October 2026

Evidence: The index of Texas death certificate 49198 gives his father as Frank Kretchmar (S1646); Charlie is a son in the 1910 household (S433) and in his father’s obituary (S1633). Weak or missing: The index shows no mother, so no record read names Lena Landrock as his mother; she is entered as the best guess because she is his father’s only known wife. Only the index was read, not the certificate image. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Life

Birth1886
Born on 13 July 1886 in Texas; died on 20 August 1967 at Temple, Bell County, Texas. Both dates are from the index of the death certificate, not the image S1646
Death1967
An obituary index entry for the Austin American-Statesman of 21 August 1967, p. 13, has Charles Frank Kretchmar, 81, of Austin, who died at Temple, and lists as his brothers and sister Will, Max and Minnie Reininger S1675. Those are three of Julius Franz Kretschmar’s other children, which supports him as the father. What is weak or missing: the index entry and the list of names on the page were read, not the article itself; the obituary calls him Charles Frank where the death certificate index has Charlie F., and the two are taken as one man on the age, the place of death and the brothers and sister. His burial place is not entered. Any children are not named here. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Life

Birth1888
Born 11 March 1888, Travis County, Texas; Minnie in the 1900 household S228
Burial1978
As Minnie Johanna Reininger she died at Austin on 18 January 1978, born 11 March 1888 in Travis County; her son Frank was the informant and she is buried in Capital Memorial Gardens S474. With Albert Reininger she had a son born 10 July 1911 near Lytton Springs, Caldwell County S475; the family was Willie and Frank in 1920 S476 and Frank and Harry in 1940, in rural Travis County S477.
Census1957
The 1957 Austin directory lists her as Albert C. Reininger's widow at 1711 South First Street, with her sons Frank and Harry nearby S704.
Census1950
In 1950 Albert, 65, and Minnie, 55, lived at 1711 South First Street, Austin, where she worked as a housekeeper for a private family; their son Harry, 26, a cabinet maker, his wife Evelyn and their three young children lived next door Probable confirm or correct → S799. Evidence: the names, the street and Harry's trade. What is weak: it gives Minnie's age as 55, ten years under her 1888 birth.
Death1973
Confirmed Named as a surviving sister, “Minnie Reininger of Austin”, in her brother Will’s 1973 death notice and obituary S1196 S1611. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not from the page image.

Family

Parents
Marriage1978
Wife of Albert C. Reininger S296; died 18 January 1978, Austin; her death certificate names both parents
Children1943
Her son Harry Max Reininger, born at Mendoza, Texas, married on 11 September 1943 in Henrico County, Virginia, while serving in the Army at Richmond Air Base. His bride was Evelyn Genevieve Pehl of Creedmoor. The certificate names his parents as Albert Reininger and Minnie Kretchmar S566.
Marriage1955
Her husband, Albert C. Reininger, a farmer, died at Austin on 19 June 1955 and was buried in Capitol Memorial; their son Frank was the informant, and the certificate names his father as John Reininger, born in Germany S677. It gives his birth as 17 August 1882, but in 1900 he is Albert, 16, born May 1884, in John Reininger's household in Caldwell County, with a brother born in January 1882 S678, so 1884 is the better year.
Parents1900
Albert C. Reininger's mother was probably Helene (Helen) Seidemann Probable confirm or correct →. Evidence: in 1900, read from the image, Helen, born May 1855 in Texas, mother of twelve children, nine living, is the wife of the head, John Reininger, and Albert, 16, is his son S678; Texas county marriage indexes record Johann Reininger marrying Helene Seidemann S853. What is weak: the census relationship is to the head only, Albert's death certificate gives his mother as unknown S677, and the marriage is an index entry whose date has not been read.

Record1896
The Frelsburg baptism register gives her full name, Frieda Bertha Caroline, and her birth at New Ulm on 3 August 1896 S551.
Census1932
The 1932–33 Austin directory has Otto C. and Frieda Herber at 201 West 39th, the home of Ernst and Mary Herber, farmer S578.
Death1892
Otto Carl Herber was born at Creedmoor, Texas, on 22 November 1892 or 1893. In 1917 he lived at 1904 Canterbury Street, Austin, in the piano business S680. He died at Austin on 23 October 1935 and was buried at Oakwood; the certificate names his parents as E. W. Herber, born in Germany, and Marie Ceska, and gives 1893, while the draft card's year is overwritten and its age points to 1892 S679.
Census1900
In 1900 Otto, born November 1892, was one of six sons of Ernst Herber, a German-born farmer in Travis County, and his wife Mattie S687. This supports 1892 over the death certificate's 1893.

Family

Parents
Daughter of Otto Paul Ladusch and Emma Stein; elder sister of Hattie Elizabeth Ladusch
Marriage1916
Her full name was Freda Bertha Ladusch. She married Otto C. Herber, a piano tuner, at Austin on 26 August 1916, by Pastor Gideon Olson of Gethsemane Lutheran S470S471. Their son was Roy Otto Herber S469, and in 1930 they owned 907 W. 29th Street, Austin S472. She later married a Mr. Wesson, and died as Freda Herber Wesson on 18 July 1973 at Comfort, Kendall County; she is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin S468. Her own 1942 statement gives her birthplace as New Ulm, Austin County (probable); her death certificate says Austin S469S468.
Parents1918
The 1918 Texas birth index lists an unnamed “infant of Otto Herber”, born in Travis County on 17 April 1918, certificate 21667 Probable confirm or correct → S800. Evidence: the father's name, the county, and a date twenty months after the 1916 marriage. What is weak: the index names neither the child nor the mother; it is probably Roy Otto Herber, and the certificate would settle it.

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
