The record in detail

Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Research status: PROBABLE (strong) as the mother of Florência Luiza, and so maternal grandmother of Frank Silva Sr. Named as maternal grandmother in his 1862 baptism S1228, and as Florência's mother, wife of José Matheus, in Florência's 1880 burial S1230.

Evidence: she is named as Florência Luiza's mother in two independent register entries read from the images — Frank Silva Sr's 1862 baptism (maternal grandmother) and Florência's own 1880 burial (mother, married to José Matheus) — and the name agrees exactly in both. Open question
⚠️ His own marriage to Theresa Ignacia is not found and is not asserted here. Two records disagree on whether his son was born within it: the 1882 burial calls the son "filho natural" (outside marriage), the 1858 marriage calls him "filho legitimo". The marriage record is preferred as evidence of legitimacy, but no marriage entry for this elder couple has itself been located, so none is claimed

Life

Death1833
He died intestate, in Page County, between March 1833 and February 1837. He was alive on 19 March 1833, when he contracted to sell land to Pierson Judd S1339, and by February 1837 the court had ordered his lands divided among his heirs S1340. David C. Coffman was his administrator. The death in December 1814 that some online trees give him belongs to another man
Birth1779
His birth date is not documented. The 1779 birth year comes from a compiled family chart only
Record1815
Possible, not confirmed: A Samuel Coffman was executor of the will of a David Coffman in Rockingham County, Virginia, in 1815 (Ancestry record 687284). No relationship is stated, and Coffman is a common name there. What would settle it: reading David Coffman’s will.

Family

Children1883
Father of David C. Coffman, who died at Fruitland, Page County, on 25 January 1883, aged 70 S364
Parents1833
Son of Martin Coffman (Kaufman) of the Hawksbill: CONFIRMED. A Page County chancery bill of 1833 says Jacob and Saml. Kaufman held a Blue Ridge tract “devised from their father Martin Kaufman” S1338. Pierson Judd's suit shows that Samuel, Judd's seller of half that tract, was the man whose administrator was David C. Coffman and whose widow was Susan S1339. Martin's 1809 will names “my two sons, Samuel and Jacob Kaufman” S1337, and an 1835 deed calls Jacob and Samuel brothers S1342
Marriage1799
His wife was Susanna. They married by a Shenandoah County bond of 12 February 1799 S104S1343; the 1871 register names David C.'s parents as Saml and Susannah S362; and in 1843 she was “Susanna Coffman widow of Samuel Coffman decd” S1341, as she is “Susan Coffman widow of Saml.” in the Judd suit S1339. The “Mary” of the 1883 register, whose informant was David C.'s widow, is a slip. A Susan Coffman, 69, lived in David C.'s household in 1850 S829
Parents1799
The typed abstract of the 1799 bond reads “son of Geo.” S664. The original bond, read on 5 October 2026, names no father: the only George on it is the witness, George Hoffman S1343. The abstract was wrong, and it no longer counts against Martin

Life

Birth1787
Born about 1787, Virginia, by his ages in the two censuses: 63 in 1850 and 73 in 1860 S829S830
Census1850
In 1850, aged 63, a farmer, he lived in the household of his son-in-law David C. Coffman in District 49, Page County, Virginia, with Emily and her four young children (enumerated 6 September 1850) S829
Census1860
In 1860, aged 73 and entered as “Gentleman”, he was still in David C. Coffman's household near Luray, with a Rachael Thornhill, 47 (enumerated 14 August 1860) S830. Neither census has a relationship column; a Rappahannock County suit makes her probably his daughter (see the last line of this card)
Death1860
His death date is not found. He was alive on 14 August 1860, so the death in 1860 given in some online trees is not supported, and nor is the middle initial “S” that some trees give him

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → His father was probably Thomas Thornhill Sr. of Rappahannock County, Virginia, who died without a will on 28 June 1839. A chancery suit filed that September to divide his land names his ten children: William, Thomas, Robert, Bluford, Charles, Edmund, Joseph and Bryant Thornhill, Elizabeth (Mrs. Joseph Butler) and Lucinda (Mrs. Henry Stone); the bill, the decree and the commissioners’ report were read from the images S1555. Evidence: the name, the right generation, and Rappahannock, which adjoins Page County and is where a family chart puts Emily’s birth in 1820 (Rappahannock was cut from Culpeper County in 1833, so the Culpeper birthplace given for her elsewhere in this record does not conflict; her daughter’s 1923 death certificate also says Rappahannock S959). Weak: the suit gives no age, wife or home for its William, and no record read yet shows he is the William who lived with the Coffmans in Page County; Thomas’s wife is not named, so no mother is given here. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → He is probably the William Thornhill of Rappahannock County whose papers are in a chancery suit decided there in 1855, and if so he had a son Richard Thornhill and a daughter Rachael S1557. In the bill William calls Richard “his son”, and a witness speaks of “Miss Rachael the daughter of Wm Thornhill” at a sale in December 1845; both passages were read from the images. On 7 March 1845 this William pledged everything movable he owned for his debts, including three enslaved people whom the deed names as Abraham, Thomas and Aaron; the trustee sold them and the rest on 5 December 1845. In September 1850 he signed his 110¼ acres over to Richard. Evidence: an unmarried Rachael Thornhill, 47, lives with our William in 1860; a man who lost his goods in 1845 and conveyed his land in 1850 fits the William who owns no land in his son-in-law’s house; the two counties adjoin, and Emily is said to have been born in Rappahannock. Weak: the suit names no wife and gives no age for William or Rachael; the 1860 census states no relationship; Rachael is not in the Coffman house in 1850; and the suit does not mention Thomas Thornhill Sr., so it does not prove this William is the heir of 1839. The 1850 census of Rappahannock County, read from a published transcription and not yet from the page, lists Richard Thornhill, 38, a farmer with land valued at $1,400, with a Rachel Thornhill, 33, in his house, and no grown William Thornhill anywhere in the county S1560. That would explain why Rachael is not in the Coffman house that year and fits William having left for Page County, but it makes her four years younger than the 1860 census does. Know more? Life

Record1820
Possible, not confirmed: A Mary Thornhill headed a household in Culpeper County, Virginia, in 1820 (Ancestry record 1168188). Weak: name only; Culpeper is not Page County, and a man of 45 or over in her household is unexplained. What would settle it: William Thornhill in Culpeper records (1810 census, deeds, estate).
Death1839
See also: a probable father for her husband, Thomas Thornhill Sr., died in Rappahannock County in 1839 S1555. Rappahannock was part of Culpeper County until 1833, so the Thornhills may well have been in Culpeper in 1820; but the suit names no wife for its William, so it neither supports nor rules out the 1820 household above. The father is marked Probable on William’s card, where the weak points are set out.

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A daughter of this household married in the county: the Davidson County marriage index has Octavia V. Brooks marrying Wm C. Taylor on 21 October 1852 S1576, and the Texas death index entry of William Carroll Taylor, born 1866 in Tennessee, died 1943 at Colorado City, gives his mother as Octavia Brooks S1577. That makes the Octavia of his 1850 household the Mrs. Taylor buried at Irving, Dallas County, near Lucy. What is weak or missing: both are read from indexes only, not the images, and neither names Octavia’s parents or Lucy. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

The month and year match the Joseph Franklin Brooks buried at Potosi, Taylor County. What is weak or missing: it is read from the index, not the page; the match rests on name, birth date and state; and no record yet says Davidson County or names Moses T. as his father. Research status

Research status: PROBABLE as the father of James W. Wright. The History of Dallas County (1892) names Thomas and Martha A. (Tate) Wright as James's parents, but it is a paid-for family account, not a vital record S85.

Evidence: The 12 December 1815 Davidson County, Tennessee marriage of Thomas Wright and Martha Tate, and the 1850 Davidson County census household of Thomas (b. 1794 NC) and Martha (b. 1797 TN), fit James W. Wright's own stated birth (1825, Tennessee) and the family's documented move to Dallas County, Texas, where a History of Dallas County (1892) names Thomas and Martha A. (Tate) Wright as his parents; a Thomas Wright of the right age heads a Davidson County household in 1840 (S1281), and a Thomas Wright, 77, born North Carolina, farms in Dallas County in 1870 (S1282), with a $5,000 farm on the agricultural schedule (S1295); a Thomas Wright registers to vote in Dallas County Precinct 2 after 17 years in Texas (S1294). Weak or missing: No record yet names James as Thomas's son directly; the link rests on the 1892 county history and the fit of dates and places; the 1840 census names only the head, and in 1870 the woman in his house is Lurina(?), 54, not Martha; the 1870 farm schedule says Precinct 3 against Precinct 2, and the voter list shows no age. Life

Birth1804
Born about 1804, Kentucky; a farmer at Harlan County in 1850 and a United Brethren clergyman in Laurel County in 1860 S169S167
Census1830
In 1830 he is on line 1 of the Harlan County census: a man and a woman aged 20–30 and three boys under five. A James Brock Senr, a couple aged 50–60, is on the same page and is a candidate for his father; that is not proven S462. His probable daughter Elizabeth Hoskins, born 26 April 1831, named him and “Betsy Howard” as her parents on her 1911 death certificate S454.
Census1880
In 1880 he was 74, a cooper, at Bull Skin, Clay County, Kentucky, with Elizabeth, 76; he gave his parents' birthplace as Virginia. William Wilson and Sabra lived next door S581. Elizabeth was a widow by 1900 S580.
Census1870
In 1870 he was 66, a minister of the gospel, in Buffalo Precinct, Owsley County, Kentucky, with Elizabeth, 64, and Hiram Hoskins, 13, and Lee Hoskins, 2, whose relationship is not stated. William H. and Sabra Wilson lived two doors away S630. His and Elizabeth's ages advance exactly from 1850 and 1860.

Probable
Probably his household in 1840: James Brock, head, in Harlan County, Kentucky, with a man and a woman aged 30–40, two boys under five, and five other children Probable confirm or correct → S1160. The evidence is the county, the same as the 1850 household S169, and the ages: he was born about 1804, Elizabeth about 1803, and Solomon Alfred in 1837 or 1838. What is weak: the 1840 census names only the head and gives tallies, not names, so nothing on the page proves this is the same James. Jesse Brock Jr. and Amy Brock lived on the same sheet, with five Howard households close by, which fits “Betsy Howard” as Elizabeth’s maiden name S454 but proves no kinship. In 1880 she, 76, and James lived next door to the same Wilsons S581. That makes Sabra her daughter. Neither record names Solomon, so he stays probable.

Names1911
Her maiden name was probably Howard. The 1911 death certificate of Elizabeth Hoskins, born 26 April 1831, names her parents as James Brock and Betsy Howard, both born in Harlan County. The informant, H. D. Peters, was also the undertaker, but very probably Elizabeth Hoskins's son-in-law Harden D. Peters, in whose home she lived in 1910 S748; it is still one source, so this stays probable until a second agrees S454. In 1830 she and James Brock are on line 1 of the Harlan County census, both aged 20–30, with three boys under five S462.

What is weak or missing: in 1810 a John Howard, 45 or over, in Knox County, Kentucky, had three girls under 10 (Ancestry record 685337); Betsy could be one of them, but the tally names nobody and three Howard households are on the page. Probable
Probably his household in 1860: Moses Williams, 60, a farmer born in Tennessee, with real estate of $540, in Jackson County, Kentucky (P.O. McKee), with Nancy, 56, and George B., 20, Nancy Ann, 17, and Absalom, 15, all born in Tennessee Probable confirm or correct → S1172. The evidence is the pairing of Moses and Nancy, both born in Tennessee, as in Owsley County in 1850 S173, and the county: Jackson was formed partly from Owsley in 1858, and he is there again in 1870 S620. What is weak: the census states no relationships, Nancy’s age has moved eight years in ten, and Lydia, married by then, is not in the house, so nothing on this page ties him to her. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A probable son: the 1923 Arkansas death certificate of J. Madison Williams, a farmer born in Tennessee on 22 January 1832 who died at Decatur, Benton County, on 14 February 1923, names his parents as Mose Williams and Nancy Wilder, both born in Tennessee. It is the first record to give Nancy’s maiden name as Wilder. Weak: nothing on it ties the family to Owsley or Jackson County, Kentucky. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1475
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In 1840 a Moses Williams, aged 40–49, headed a household of nine in Hawkins County, Tennessee, the county of the family typescript’s 1819 marriage, with a woman of 30–39 and a girl of 5–10 who fit Nancy and Lydia. Life

Birth1802
Born about 1802, Tennessee. No record read gives her maiden name; a compiled Wilder family history makes her Nancy Wilder (below)
Census1870
In 1870 she and Moses were in McKee Precinct, Jackson County, Kentucky: Nancy, 67, keeping house, born Tennessee S620.
Census1880

A Samuel and Nancy Ann Evans lived next door to Moses and Nancy in 1870 S620, and the Evanses' two eldest children were born in Kentucky. Probable confirm or correct → This is probably her; if so, Nancy Ann Evans was her daughter and Moses had died by 1880. Sam's age is twelve years on from 1870, not ten, so the match rests mainly on Nancy Ann and the children's birthplaces.

Wilder's typescript family history, p. 571, lists “Nancy Wilder (dau of James & Nancy Hays Wilder) b in Tenn. abt 1802 d in Madison Co., Ark. after 1878, m Moses Williams” S863, which fits her 1850 and 1880 census entries. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: a compiled history is the only source.
Marriage1819
Her marriage, probably: the full page of W. M. Wilder's typescript says she and Moses Williams married on 15 February 1819 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and names a son, Sampson Williams, born in Hawkins County about 1825 Probable confirm or correct → S993. Williams, born in Tennessee on 10 January 1828, died at Pleasant Hill, Lane County, Oregon, on 26 February 1919; his death certificate names his father as Moses Williams and his mother’s maiden name as Wilder. Weak: the mother’s given name is not entered, she is said to be born in Alabama, and the informant spoke 91 years after the birth. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1516
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Her son Sampson’s household: in 1850 Sampson Williams, 25, his wife Lydia, 25, and George, 4, Dorcas, 2, and Nancy, 1, were in dwelling 42 of Subdivision 32, Hancock County, Tennessee, next door to a David Wilder household (Ancestry record 6185976). The family typescript’s “Lydia Brewer, born 1845” probably runs two wives together: Lydia of 1850, whose maiden name no record gives, and a later wife, Orlena Brewer (also written Oleva and Arleen), born about 1845–48. One child of the later marriage is confirmed by two records: Joe Williams, born 22 December 1893 at Sneedville, Tennessee, died 6 December 1928 at Albion, Michigan, whose Michigan death record and 1918 marriage record both name his parents as Sampson Williams and Orlena (Oleva) Brewer (Ancestry records 2166059 and 2362224). Evidence that Sampson is Nancy’s son: the typescript S993. Weak: that tie rests on the typescript alone, living next to the Wilders fits kinship but proves nothing, and every record here was read from the index on 1 October 2026, with no page image opened. What would settle it: a record that names Sampson’s parents. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Unverified A Find a Grave memorial under the name Lucy Ann Alumbaugh gives her birth as 25 October 1804 in Virginia, her death as 25 September 1875 in Kentucky, and her burial in Owsley County. This is a lead, not yet checked against a record: a contributor’s memorial that cites no source, and no death register, stone or estate paper has been read. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1469

Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: nothing yet shows that this Lucy Thomas is our Lucy Ann.

Open questions

Probable
Probable mother of James Daniel Bowles, and so grandmother of William Anderson Bowles; wife of William A. Bowles
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In 1860 she was probably the Lucy Ann Allumbaugh, 53, born Virginia, at Travellers Rest, Owsley County, in the household of William Allumbaugh, 48, a farmer, with Sarah Bowls, 17; against her name the enumerator wrote “Claims marriage rights”. It is the first record of a second marriage, and of the Alumbaugh name. Weak: no relationships are stated. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1470
Probable

Life

Birth1788
Colonial Families of the United States gives his birth as 7 July 1788, Fayette County, Virginia (now Clark County, Kentucky). Kentucky was still part of Virginia then, which is why sources say both. It makes him the sixth of thirteen children of James Quisenberry's first marriage, with eleven half-siblings, and has him dying on 30 December 1870. Quisenberry Memorials says 31 December S451S333.
Census1850
The census has him and Lucy in Clark County, Kentucky: farming in District 2 in 1850 with Tandy, Elkanah and John M. S495; near Winchester in 1860 with Elkanah, Martin and Sarah S496; and still alive in August 1870, aged 80, a retired farmer marked “Insane” S497. Two sons' death certificates name him and Lucy Bush as parents: Colby B. Jr. (1822–1907) and John Martin (1833–1914) S493S494. An SAR application and two DAR entries give his parents as James Quisenberry and Jane Burris; they are compiled lineages, so this is probable S498S499S500. These records prove other children, not Louisa, so the couple's status stays probable.
Birth1858
The Clark County register of births for 1858 records Mariah, a Black girl born enslaved on 30 December near Winchester, with “Colby B. Quisenberry” entered as her owner S726 Probable confirm or correct →. He was living near Winchester in 1860 S496. The county’s register of deaths for 1857 has two more enslaved people among the rows entered under “Colby Quisenberry”: Sally, a woman aged 28, who died on 24 September 1857 of dysentery, and Isaac, a boy aged 4, who died on 15 February S1692. They were people he held, not kin, and have no cards here. What is weak: his son Colby B. Jr had the same name, and neither register says which Colby it means; in the death register the rows on the two facing pages do not line up exactly.
Census1840
In 1840 “C B Quisenberry” headed a Clark County household with a man and a woman aged 50–59, which fits Colby, born 1788, and Lucy, four men in their twenties, and eight younger people; Thacker and Jackson Quisenberry headed young families a few lines below S741 Probable confirm or correct →. The head is too old to be his son Colby B. Jr., who signed the same way in 1847. What is weak: the 1840 census names only the head, so the initials, the ages and the county are the only link.
Burial1900
The family Memorials of 1900, in its “A Constructive Descent” on page 7, gives him born in Clark County, then Fayette County, Virginia, on 7 July 1788, dead there on 30 December 1870, and married to Lucy Bush on 16 December 1810 S761. That agrees with Colonial Families S451, so the 31 December credited to the Memorials is the book disagreeing with itself. A compiled book, not a record.
Census1860
In the 1860 agricultural census of District 2, Clark County, he farmed 510 improved and 320 unimproved acres valued at $30,000, with 25 horses, 58 mules, 14 milch cows, 84 swine and 32 sheep, and raised about 4,500 bushels of corn S1451

No record names her as Samuel's wife, and a Samuel Timberman–Mary Ann Applegate marriage is also indexed.

Open questions

Probable
Probable father of John H. Timberman, and so great-grandfather of James Harris Timberman Jr.
Probable
Probably him in 1830: Samuel Timberman, 40–49, heading a household of 12 in Upper Alloways Creek Township, Salem County, with two sons 15–20; William and Ann Timberman lived next door (Upper Alloways Creek Township, 1830) Probable confirm or correct → S996. Evidence: the name, and the township where Mary Timberman died in 1858 S860. Weak: 1830 names only the head, and the age bracket is a decade younger than his 71 in 1850 S861. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probably him in 1840: Samuel Timberman, 60–69, in Upper Alloways Creek Township, Salem County, with a woman 50–59, a boy 10–14 and a girl 5–9. He is listed between Benjn Timberman and Samuel Timberman Jr, both 20–29, who may be older sons Probable confirm or correct → S1017. Evidence: his age fits the 71 of 1850 S861, the woman fits Mary, and the boy fits John H., born about 1830. Weak: 1840 names only the heads, and the 1830 entry gives him an age of 40–49, which does not agree. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → He died on 8 May 1859 at Upper Alloways Creek, a widower and farmer aged 81, born there; the township return of deaths names his parent as William Timberman S1261. Life

Note
Of Salem County, New Jersey. His own dates are not yet documented
Census1870
In 1870 he was 73, living with Rachel in Gloucester City in the home of Joseph K. and Georgianna Frazer S622. That puts his birth about 1797, in New Jersey. The 1870 page states no relationships. The 1880 page of the same house does (next line), and in August 1850 Joseph K. Frazier, 21, a labourer, and Georgianna, 18, were in the next house to James and Rachel in Upper Alloways Creek, dwelling 348 S1167.
Census1860
In 1860 he was James Harris, 63, a labourer, living with Rachel in Upper Alloways Creek, Salem County S653. The census leaves birthplaces blank.
Census1850
In August 1850 he was James Harris, 53, a labourer, in Upper Alloways Creek, Salem County, with Rachel, 39, Benjamin, 16, and Charlotte E., 10, all born in New Jersey Confirmed S1167. The census states no relationships, and Rebecca Anna is not in the household. That this census household is the home of Rebecca Anna’s parents is an inference, not a statement in any record: her death return gives her birthplace as Upper Alloways Creek and her parents as James & Rachel Harris S1621, and this is the one household of those names found there.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In June 1880 the Frazier house in Gloucester City held James Harrison, 84, father-in-law of the head, Jos. Frazier, and Rachel, 69, mother-in-law, both born in New Jersey S1693. This is probably James and Rachel Harris, and the evidence is strong: it is the Frazer household they lived in ten years before, James’s age runs on from 73, Rachel’s 69 agrees with her 39 in 1850 and 49 in 1860, and the Fraziers were their next-door neighbours in 1850. If it is, Georgianna Frazer, born about 1832, was their daughter. Weak: the census taker wrote the surname Harrison, not Harris, and no other record yet read calls Georgianna their daughter. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A printed compilation of Salem County marriage records lists James Harris and Rachel Brown, married 12 February 1828, which would make Rachel’s maiden name Brown. Weak: a derivative compilation; the same page has another James Harris marriage in 1809, and no record ties this marriage to Rebecca Anna. Her age at death puts her birth about 1829, the year after it, but her birth year is not settled. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1500

Census1850
In August 1850 she was Rachel Harris, 39, born New Jersey, in James Harris’s household in Upper Alloways Creek, Salem County, with Benjamin, 16, and Charlotte E., 10 Confirmed S1167. That age puts her birth about 1811. Rebecca Anna’s own birth year is not settled: her death return of 1866 gives her age as 37 (born about 1829), her marriage return of 1857 gives 18 (about 1839), and the figure in the 1860 census is written over and reads 31 or 37. By the death return Rachel was about 18 when Rebecca was born. Both of Rebecca’s own returns name her mother as Rachel S1620 S1621, so the card stands. That this census household is the home of Rebecca Anna’s parents is an inference, not a statement in any record: her death return gives her birthplace as Upper Alloways Creek and her parents as James & Rachel Harris S1621, and this is the one household of those names found there. In 1870 she was 63, living with James in Gloucester City in the home of Joseph K. and Georgianna Frazer S622. The 1870 page states no relationships. Her ages do not run evenly: 39 in 1850, 49 in 1860 and 69 in 1880 all put her birth about 1811, but the 63 written in 1870 would put it about 1807.

Life

Birth1772
Born 5 June 1772, Erkenbrechtshausen, baptised the next day at Triensbach, Württemberg, the son of Johann Michael Pröger and Anna Margaretha Raisig S594
Work1796
A master weaver at Erkenbrechtshausen in 1796, 1806 and at his father's death; the 1804 birth register calls him Tüncher Mstr., a master whitewasher, and his son's 1870 burial entry a Maler S595S591S12
Death1806
Died December 1806, Erkenbrechtshausen, Württemberg
Death1806
Died of a fever at Erkenbrechtshausen in December 1806, aged 34; buried 21 December. His son Georg Friedrich was born ten weeks later S593. Georg Friedrich became a weaver at Erkenbrechtshausen like his father and married Maria Margaretha Stegmaier at Triensbach on 20 September 1836 Confirmed S738. He was dead by September 1864, when their son Georg Friedrich married Margaretha Barbara Bauer of Gröningen at Triensbach on 27 September; the register calls the father “† Georg Friedrich Pröger, weaver and cottager” S775. The younger Georg Friedrich was a cottager and weaver at Erkenbrechtshausen, moved to Triensbach as a farmer in 1880 and died on 1 April 1902; his wife, born at Gröningen on 2 June 1840, died on 10 July 1907 Confirmed S1700S1701. He was born on 20 December 1838: three pages of the family register write that day, and so does the 1864 marriage entry on a second reading S775. His baptism entry has not been read. The Triensbach family register, read from our own images of both of the couple's pages, enters six children with their births, and the deaths of four of them Confirmed: Rosine Barbara, born at Erkenbrechtshausen on 15 September 1865; Margaretha Barbara, born 20 August 1867; Katharina Barbara, born 21 November 1869, died at Erkenbrechtshausen on 21 March 1936; Maria Barbara, called Babetta, born 21 February 1872, died at Windsheim on 23 January 1953; Maria Margaretha, born 15 October 1875, died at Triensbach on 30 December 1936; and Georg Leonhard, born at Triensbach on 6 December 1888, who died on 30 December 1888. The five daughters were born at Erkenbrechtshausen. A footnote enters Karl Friedrich, a son of Maria Barbara, born at Triensbach on 26 July 1895, who died on 3 September 1895 Confirmed S1700. Rosine Barbara married Georg Friedrich Osterlein at Triensbach on 26 March 1889 and died on 26 October 1952 Confirmed S790; her birth stands on three register pages, her marriage and death on the Stöckenburg family register alone. The other daughters' marriages are Probable: Katharina Barbara married Leonhardt Friedrich Hintermeyer, a widower at Erkenbrechtshausen, on 6 May of a year in the 1890s; Maria Margaretha married Jakob Martin Hofmann, a farmer at Triensbach, in a November read as 1899; the surname Luttenberger stands against Margaretha Barbara and Emmert against Maria Barbara. The evidence is the marriage column of the one family-register page, in a later hand. What is weak: the years are not legible on the film, two husbands have no forename, and no marriage entry has been read S1700 Add to this record →. Maria Margaretha Stegmaier married again, to Johann Leonhard Frank, a weaver at Erkenbrechtshausen, and died his widow at Triensbach on 16 May 1887; her burial entry names her parents, Georg Simon Stegmaier and Katharina Batz S776. Both entries carry family register II,343, the page of Georg Friedrich the elder and Maria Margaretha, which ties them to this family; the younger couple's own pages are II,339 and III,113.

Family

Marriage1796
First married Anna Maria Busch, November 1796 (banns at Ellrichshausen, wedding at Triensbach). Their first son, Johann Michael Pröger, was born at Erkenbrechtshausen on 15 April 1797 and baptised that day at Triensbach, Georg Melchior Julius's full brother Confirmed S623. She is the mother of Georg Melchior Julius Prüger, born 25 July 1804 S595S591. Johann Michael, a day labourer at Großaltdorf, married Anna Barbara Hübner of Großaltdorf (born 27 April 1801) there on 17 June 1829 Confirmed S737S779; the Großaltdorf copy of the entry also names the bride's mother, Anna Catharina (surname unclear, perhaps Frinauer); the index’s 17 January is wrong. Their children, all baptised at Großaltdorf: Margaretha Barbara (20 January 1829–23 January 1831), Johann Georg (1830–1904), Johann Simon (1832), Johann Friedrich (1834–1907) and Barbara (1843) Probable — the baptisms of the three sons are index entries only, their images not yet read S739. Two of the daughters' entries have now been read. Margaretha Barbara was born on 20 January 1829, five months before her parents married, and died of convulsions on 23 January 1831, aged two; she was buried on 25 January, the date the index and the tree took for her death Confirmed S788. Barbara was born on 8 January 1843 and baptised on 12 January, the daughter of J. M. Pröger, citizen and day labourer, and Anna Barbara geb. Hübner Confirmed S789. Add to this record →. Two of the sons' burial entries have now been read. Johann Georg, an unmarried cottager, died at Kleinaltdorf on 28 February 1904 and was buried at Großaltdorf on 2 March Confirmed S778. Johann Friedrich, a weaver, died at Hausen on 31 May 1907 and was buried at Untersontheim on 2 June Confirmed S777; the index had put his death at Merkelbach. His burial entry gives his birth as 30 September 1834, where the tree has 6 October (perhaps the baptism); the 1834 baptism would settle it. No emigration record is found for him.
Marriage1806
Married second, as a widower, 4 March 1806 at Triensbach, Eva Barbara Schmidt, daughter of Johann Michael Schmidt, master weaver at Brettenfeld. She was Georg Melchior Julius's stepmother. The index's 2 March is the last reading of the banns S592
Parents1997
This house stood at Erkenbrechtshausen until 1997. Descendants of Katharina Barbara Pröger (1869–1936), a daughter of Georg Friedrich Pröger (born 1838) and Margaretha Barbara Bauer and a great-granddaughter of Johann Leonhard David, sent the photograph in October 2026 and call it the family home. The family register shows her parents moved from Erkenbrechtshausen to Triensbach in 1880 S1700, so it is not yet known whether this was the Pröger house before that move, to which Katharina later returned with her husband, or the house she married into; the family has been asked. The photograph is undated: the family puts it before about 1950, and the clothing suggests the 1930s. The people at the door are not identified; the family thinks the man at the gate may be Ernst Hintermeier (1905–1993), a son of Katharina Barbara. All of this rests on the family’s word, and no record says whether Johann Leonhard David himself lived in this house Probable confirm or correct → S1697
Children2026
History of this card. 11 Oct 2026
the paragraph on Georg Friedrich Pröger (born 1838) and his children rewritten from the Triensbach family register (S1700, S1701): six children where one was named; his birth day, given as 25 December from S775, now stated as open between 20 and 25 December; the sentence on a second Georg Friedrich Pröger of register II,344 withdrawn, since II,343–344 is one family's page; Katharine corrected to Katharina, as the register writes her. 11 Oct 2026 — his birth day settled as 20 December 1838 on a second reading of the image of S775: the figure first read as a 5 is the clerk's hooked 0. 12 Oct 2026 — the “new” marker on the sentence about his second marriage (S592) removed; the sentence is unchanged. 13 Oct 2026 — two notes carried “added 27 September 2026” and “added 26 September 2026” in mid-text; the words were taken out, nothing else changed.

Life

Birth1806
Born about 1806; of Pucketts Creek, Harlan County, Kentucky; died 1899
Census1860
In 1860 he was a farmer in Harlan County, 53, with land worth $2,000, a wife Mary, 35, and Elizabeth, 17, on page 125 S461. The household, dwelling 822, runs on to page 126: Mary, 15, Matilda, 13, Jacob, 11, a girl of 4, Henry, 3, and Araminta, 1, with no surname written on those six lines and no relationships stated S165. Mary, Matilda and Jacob are the Mary, Paulina and Jacob of his 1850 household, ten years on by the calendar and eight by the ages given. Mary was his second wife; the 1861 birth register below gives her maiden name, Morris.
Census1880
In 1880 he was 72, farming in Harlan County, with his wife Polly, 45, and her father Littleton Morris, 80. He gave his father's birthplace as North Carolina and his mother's as Virginia S548.
Census1870
In 1870 he was 64, a farmer in Harlan County with land worth $1,500, living with Mary, 37, keeping house; Jacob, 22, the son whose 1933 death record names him; and six others aged 3 to 18, whose relationships are not stated S625. The Harlan County birth register names the mother of his daughter Sarah, born 15 September 1861, as Mary Morris S626. So his second wife, the Mary of 1860 and 1870 and the Polly of 1880 who lived with her father Littleton Morris, was Mary Morris.
Census1840
In 1840 John C. Howard headed a Harlan County household of eleven: a man of 30 to 40, as he would be if born about 1806, a man of 20 to 30, two women of 20 to 30, and seven children. Jacob, Larkin, Samuel and Wilkerson Howard lived nearby S642. The census names only the head.
Census1850
On the 1850 census page, read from the image, he was 45, a farmer with $1,200 in land, in Harlan County, dwelling and family 342, with Michael, John, Larkin, Hiram, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary, Paulina and Jacob, and no adult woman in the house Confirmed S967. The census gives no relationships.
Record2026
History of this card. The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 28 Sep 2026 (1 note), 29 Sep 2026 (1 note). The marks and their dates were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed.
22 Sep 2026
S151 was read again from the image at full resolution; what the re-read found is in the standing note of each source in the sources list, and the dated “supplement” label was taken off those notes on 12 Oct 2026. 13 Oct 2026 — the 1860 line said the second page of his household had not been read; it was read on 22 Sep 2026 (S165) and the line now gives it, and the evidence for Matilda Pauline names the 1860 household beside the 1850 one. The same line gave Matilda Brock's death “about 1855” as the reason for the second marriage; that year is on no record read and was taken out of the line. The 1860 note was first added on 25 Sep 2026. 13 Oct 2026 — 3 notes on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; they were added on: 25 Sep 2026 (1 note), 26 Sep 2026 (2 notes). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed. 13 Oct 2026 — the 1850 line was reworded to drop the word “now”; the reading is unchanged. 13 Oct 2026 — the “Research status” line gave the day this card was added and entered in the family tree, 24 Sep 2026. The date was taken out of the sentence and stands here only; no fact or grade was changed.

Marriage
Husband of Matilda Brock
Parents1850
His parents: John Howard and Mary Risner Probable confirm or correct →. A query in Howards in Kentucky, p. 127, by his great-granddaughter Sudie F. Spillman of Harlan, names “their second son John Covey”, with brothers Larkin, William, Michael and Robert S864; his 1850 household includes a Larkin and a Michael S865. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: the query is compiled and unsourced.
Marriage1850
He married his second wife, Pollie (Polly) Morris, on 10 March 185- (the last digit is lost in the binding: 1850 or 1854) at the home of her father Littleton Morris in Harlan County, before L. H. Noe(?), J.P.; Littleton and Katy Morris were the witnesses. The register is a later copy S1529

Research status

Research status: PROBABLE — entered in the family tree, labelled probable there too; no record states Matilda Pauline Howard's parentage in words. The evidence: the 1850 Harlan County census has “Paulina, 5” in John C. Howard's household (relationships not stated) S967; the 1860 census has Matilda, 13, in the same household, on its second sheet (no surname on her line, relationships not stated) S461 S165; her 6 March 1865 wedding to Solomon Brock was held “at John C. Howard's” S151; and the Kentucky death records of Hiram B. Howard (1915) S455 and Jacob Howard (1933) name their parents as John Covey Howard and Matilda Brock

Life

Birth1812
Born about 1812. When she died is not known: Find a Grave gives a death about 1855 and a burial at Wallins Creek, Harlan County, Kentucky, and no record read gives either. The year does not fit the records (see the note on her death below)
Death1915
The 1915 death certificate of her son Hiram B. Howard, born 23 November 1837, read on the image, names his parents as John Cony [Covey] Howard and Matilda Brock S455.
Death1850
Her death: no record read gives a year. The 1850 census page for John C. Howard's household in Harlan County, read on the image, has no adult woman in it; the youngest child, Jacob, was 3 S967. John married his second wife, Pollie Morris, on 10 March 185-; the register is a later copy and the last digit of the year is lost in the binding, 1850 or 1854 S1529. Either year is earlier than the Find a Grave death “about 1855”, so that year cannot stand if the register is right. The census shows only that she was not in the house in 1850: she may have been away, or dead by then. Know a record? Use “Add to this record”.

The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed. 13 Oct 2026 — the card gave her death as “about 1855 (Find a Grave only)” and called the empty 1850 household “newly” weak. Both are now one standing note on her death, which adds John's second marriage of 10 March 1850 or 1854 (S1529, on his card since 6 Oct 2026): the Find a Grave year is later than either. No year was chosen. The Hiram B. Howard line no longer says “now”. 13 Oct 2026 — the “Research status” line gave the day this card was added and entered in the family tree, 24 Sep 2026. The date was taken out of the sentence and stands here only; no fact or grade was changed.

Life

Death1804
She was Georg Melchior Julius's stepmother, not his mother. His own 1804 birth register names his mother as Maria geb. Büschin, Anna Maria Busch S591. Eva Barbara married his widowed father when the boy was a year and a half old and raised him, which is why his 1835 marriage and his 1870 burial entries name her as his mother S122S135
Birth
Her birth and death dates are not known
Burial2026
History of this card. 26 Sep 2026
this card had called her the mother of Georg Melchior Julius, as his 1835 marriage and 1870 burial entries do (S122, S135); his 1804 birth register names his mother as Maria geb. Büschin (S591), and the card was corrected to stepmother.

Family

Parents1806
Daughter of Johann Michael Schmidt, master weaver at Brettenfeld, near Rot am See. Married 4 March 1806 at Triensbach, Württemberg; the index's 2 March is the last banns S592
Marriage1807
Widowed that December. Her son Georg Friedrich Pröger was born 27 February 1807, ten weeks after his father's death; he is Georg Melchior Julius's half-brother. His 1836 marriage entry names her as his mother, “Eva Barbara geb. Schmidt”. A weaver at Erkenbrechtshausen, he married Maria Margaretha Stegmaier (born 10 December 1801 by that entry; her 1887 burial entry says 18 December, and only her 1801 baptism will settle it S776, Erkenbrechtshausen) at Triensbach on 20 September 1836 Confirmed S738. Their children at Triensbach: Maria Margaretha (born and died 1837) and Georg Friedrich the younger (born on 20 December 1838), who married Margaretha Barbara Bauer of Gröningen there on 27 September 1864 Confirmed S775 and died there in 1902 Probable — index entries only S739 Add to this record →
Children1864
Her son Georg Friedrich was dead by September 1864: the register of his son's marriage calls him “† Georg Friedrich Pröger, weaver and cottager” S775. His widow, Maria Margaretha Stegmaier, married again, to Johann Leonhard Frank, a weaver at Erkenbrechtshausen, and died his widow at Triensbach on 16 May 1887 S776. Both entries carry family register II,343, which ties them to this family Confirmed.

Open questions

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: both records were read from the index, not the images. His birth, about 1803, is worked out from the one census age. His wives are not proved: the 1836 birth record names Hannah, the 1850 household has a Susanna, 42. Hannah T. Gilfillan, who died at Barnet on 8 September 1844 S1662, is entered as his probable first wife; Susanna has no card. His parents, his birthplace and his death are not known, and no death is entered. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → His two marriages, both from indexes. A Moses Gilfillen married Hannah J. Kent on 8 February 1829 at Boston, Massachusetts S1685; another transcription of the same entry reads Hannah P. Kent and the year 1828. A Moses Gilfillan married Susan Henderson on 7 May 1846 at Ryegate, Caledonia County, Vermont S1686, two years after Hannah T. Gilfillan died at Barnet; Susan is taken to be the Susanna, 42, of his 1850 household, born about 1808. Both marriages, and Susan as his second wife, were entered in the family tree on 11 October 2026. Evidence: the names, the dates, and his daughter’s middle name, Kent. What is weak or missing: neither register has been read; that the Boston couple are the Barnet couple rests on the names and the daughter’s middle name alone; the bride’s middle initial is J or P at Boston and T at her death; and for 1846 only the groom’s index card was read. Susan Henderson has no card of her own; Caroline was born ten years before that marriage, so Susan was her stepmother. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Evidence: Caroline Kent Gilfillan’s 1836 birth record at Barnet names her parents as Moses and Hannah Gilfillan (S1657); a Hannah T. Gilfillan died at Barnet on 8 September 1844 (S1662). Weak or missing: Both entries were read from the index only; the death entry names no husband or child, so that she is Caroline’s mother rests on name, town and date; the 1850 household has a Susanna, 42, taken to be the Susan Henderson a Moses Gilfillan married in 1846 (S1686, index only); her maiden name, Kent, is probable only, from a Boston marriage index of 1829 (S1685) whose middle initial differs from her T. Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: both entries were read from the index, not the record cards. The death entry, as indexed, names no husband and no child, so that this Hannah is Caroline’s mother rests on her name, the town and the date. In 1850 Moses Gilfillan’s household has a Susanna, 42, instead S1657; she is taken to be a second wife: a Moses Gilfillan married Susan Henderson at Ryegate on 7 May 1846, by the index S1686. Gilfillan is Hannah’s married name: Kent is her probable maiden name: a Moses Gilfillen married Hannah J. Kent at Boston on 8 February 1829 S1685. That is an index entry only; its middle initial, J, or P in another transcription, is not her T.; and nothing yet ties the Boston couple to Barnet but the names and her daughter’s middle name, Kent. Her birth is not known. The record card of her death, or a gravestone naming her husband, would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
