The record in detail

Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Family

Marriage1858
Married Thomás Pereira d'Escobar on 15 February 1858, Cedros, named there as native of the parish of Capelo, legitimate daughter of José Duarte Pereira and Anna Luiza S1235
Children1867
Her daughter's 1867 baptism calls her a native of Cedros; her own 1858 marriage and her daughter's 1886 marriage both say Capelo
the marriage records, made nearer the event and naming her own parents' parish, are preferred
Marriage1858
Possible, not confirmed: She may be the “Anna Luiza, of Cedros” named as mother of a Francisca de Vargas, 37 (Ancestry record 1035962355); this record ties her to Cedros through her 1858 marriage, but the name is very common. What would settle it: a Cedros or Capelo baptism about 1873 of Francisca naming Thomás Pereira d’Escobar.

Life

Death1880
Died 11 February 1880, Cedros, aged sixty, “married to José Francisco da Silva”, legitimate daughter of José Matheus and Anna Felicia
born c. 1820, by that age S1230. Her father’s name is not settled: this burial calls him José Matheus, and her son’s 1862 baptism calls him José Francisco S1228; her mother is Anna Felicia in both
Death1886
Frank’s 1886 marriage entry calls her Florencia Constancia S1232, six years after her death. It is taken to be the same woman under another second name: the father is the same José Francisco da Silva, native of Pedro Miguel, she is again a native of this parish, and the margin gives the same place, Fonte Nova
Burial1878
Her own burial entry says she “left children”; two are documented
Frank Silva Sr and his elder brother José Francisco da Silva Jr, whose 1878 burial names her Florencia Luiza, native of this parish S1229. No record names her as Frank’s mother and as the woman buried in 1880 in one entry: that these are one woman rests on her name, her husband, the place Fonte Nova and her mother’s name agreeing

Open questions

Open question
⚠️ Conflict in his own parentage, recorded rather than resolved. His 1882 burial calls him "filho natural" (born outside marriage) of Thomás Pereira d'Escobar (the elder) and Theresa Ignacia S1234, while his own 1858 marriage calls him "filho legitimo" of the same couple S1235. A marriage entry, made with the groom present and his baptism checked, is weighed more heavily than a burial informant's answer; no marriage is entered here for the elder couple, and his own baptism (sought c.1837–39, possibly under his mother's name alone) has not been found

Children1848
His daughter Annie Bettie McKim was born on 12 July 1848 in Page County and died at Luray on 2 December 1937, the widow of Allie W. McKim. Her death certificate names her father as David C. Coffman S617. It calls her mother “Mary” Thornhill; that came from a second-hand informant, and her mother's name stays Emily M.
Children1844
His eldest daughter, Susan, the first child named in his will, was Sue M. France, widow of Robert Lee France. She was born in Page County on 3 May 1844 and died at Luray on 3 January 1923. Her death certificate names him and Emily Thornhill as her parents Confirmed S959.

Open questions

Probable
Probably his farm in 1870: the agricultural schedule of Luray Township, Page County, read from the image, lists David C. Coffman with 150 acres improved and 150 woodland, worth $8,000, 2 horses, 2 cows, 7 other cattle, 11 sheep and 15 swine; he raised 375 bushels of wheat, 250 of corn and 400 of oats Probable confirm or correct → S1012. Evidence: the name with its middle initial, in Page County, where he lived and is buried S83. Weak: the schedule gives no age or family. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Family

Children1857
Mother of David Emily “Dee” Coffman on his 1857 Page County birth register (Emily M.) S82
Names1868
Her maiden name comes from her own 1868 Page County death register, which gives her parents as Wm. and Mary Thornhill and her husband as David C. Coffman S335
Marriage1843
Married David C. Coffman on 30 May 1843, Rappahannock County, Virginia S334
Parents1787
Her father: William Thornhill, born about 1787, lived in her household in Page County in 1850, aged 63, a farmer S829, and in 1860, aged 73 S830.
Children1844
Her daughter Sue M. France, born in Page County on 3 May 1844, died a widow at Luray on 3 January 1923. Her death certificate names her parents as David C. Coffman and Emily Thornhill, and gives Emily's birthplace as Rappahannock County, which was part of Culpeper until 1833 Confirmed S959.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Her grandfather was probably Thomas Thornhill Sr. of Rappahannock County, who died on 28 June 1839 leaving ten children, a William among them S1555. Evidence: the name, the generation and the county, which is the one her daughter’s death certificate gives as Emily’s birthplace S959. Weak: the 1839 suit does not itself show that its William is her father; see his card. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → She probably had a brother Richard Thornhill and a sister Rachael. A Rappahannock County chancery suit decided in 1855 calls Richard the son of a William Thornhill, and a witness in it names “Miss Rachael” as his daughter, unmarried in 1845 S1557. Evidence: a Rachael Thornhill, 47, lived with Emily and her father in 1860; Emily herself was married in Rappahannock County in 1843. Weak: the suit names no wife and gives no ages, and the 1860 census states no relationship, so that its William is her father is not proved; see his card. A transcription of the 1850 Rappahannock census, not yet checked against the page, has Richard, 38, with a Rachel Thornhill, 33, in his house S1560; that age is four years below what the 1860 census implies, so the two may not be one woman. Life

Census1860
In the 1860 census, taken 20 August at Palace Hill, Precinct 2, Dallas County, he is Jas. W. Wright, 35, physician and farmer, born Tennessee, with L. C., 28, Sally, 8, Jas. B., 4, and Mary J., 9/12 Confirmed S1004
Census1880
In 1880 Dr James W. Wright, 55, physician, lived in Precinct 7, Dallas County, with Lucy C., 48, Jesse, 10, and Kate, 7, four dwellings from his newly married daughter and David E. Coffman S345
Record1878
His will, signed at Dallas on 9 July 1878, leaves the estate to his children Jessee and Kate Templeton Wright, subject to the homestead and community interest of his wife Louisiana C. Wright, whom he appoints sole executrix S84. It does not name Mollie, who married three months later
Record1892
The History of Dallas County (1892) gives his birth near Nashville, Tennessee, on 4 February 1825, as son of Thomas and Martha A. (Tate) Wright; his marriage to Lucy C. Brooks on 28 October 1848; the move to Texas in 1850; and, among his six children, “Mary J., wife of David E. Coffman, of Taylor county” S85. It is a paid-for family account, not a vital record; his parents rest on this book alone and stay Probable
Death1882
He died on 5 October 1882, five miles south-west of Dallas, Texas Confirmed S1607. His widow swore to that date and place before the Dallas County clerk on 28 September 1888, and two witnesses swore to the same date; the Pension Bureau entered it on her file. It agrees with the census of June 1900, where Lucy is a widow S1089. The middle name Wilson that circulates online is on no record read and is not used
Census1850
On 20 September 1850, in Civil District No. 4 of Davidson County, Tennessee, Jas. Wright, 25, physician, born Tennessee, lived in the household of Moses T. Brooks, 56, and Nancy, 51, the couple the county history names as Lucy’s parents Confirmed S1096. With him were “Rosanna” Wright, 18, and Martha Wright, 2 months. Rosanna is probably Lucy under another name or a mishearing: her age fits Lucy’s 28 in 1860 and 48 in 1880, but the census states no relationships and the given name differs, so Rosanna as Lucy, and Martha as their daughter, are Probable Probable confirm or correct →. The date also shows he was still in Tennessee in late September 1850, so the move to Texas “in 1850” came at the end of that year
Census1870
In the 1870 census of Precinct No. 1, Dallas County, he is James W. Wright, 45, a physician born in Tennessee, with real estate worth $1,800. With him are his wife Luciana, 38, and the children Jones B., 14, Mary J., 10, and Jesse, born that August, with W. A. Brooks, 35, and Gibson, 5 Confirmed S1132.
Record1848
His marriage licence to Louisiana C. Brooks was issued in Davidson County, Tennessee, on 24 October 1848 Confirmed S1145. His daughter Kate, the “Kate Templeton Wright” of his will, died as Mrs. Kate Temple Britain, a widow, at Hamilton, Texas, on 28 November 1945. Her certificate gives her birth as 21 January 1873 in Dallas County and her parents as James Wright and Lucy Brooks Confirmed S1146.
Record1869
On 22 November 1869 James W. Wright registered to vote in Dallas County, precinct 1, after nineteen years in Texas, in the county and in the precinct, which dates his arrival to 1850 Confirmed S1171.
Death1887
He served in the Mexican War in Marshall’s Company, 1st Tennessee Cavalry; his widow, Lucy C. Wright, applied from Texas for a pension under the Act of 29 January 1887 (application no. 7222, certificate no. 5683) S1510
Military1846
His widow's Mexican War pension file, read page by page from the National Archives' own scans, gives his service in her sworn words: he enlisted at Nashville on 8 June 1846 for twelve months as a private in Captain John Marshall's company (Company B) of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry under Colonel Thomas, was at Vera Cruz in February or March 1847, and was discharged at New Orleans in May 1847 Confirmed S1607. M. Grimmet, who swore he “soldiered with him” in the same company and was discharged with him, witnessed it. Lucy gives their marriage as 26 October 1848 at Nashville, by Rev. John Hessy, under her name Lucy C. Brooks. The licence was issued two days earlier S1145; the county history's 28 October S85 is two days later and is the weaker reading, being a printed family account. The file also notes a bounty-land warrant, no. 9134, for 160 acres under the 1847 act, which has not been read.
Record2026

Family

Marriage
Husband of Lucy Brooks
Children1873
His daughter Kate Temple Wright (1873–1945), Mrs. Britain, has been joined to him and to Lucy Brooks in the family tree Confirmed: her death certificate, read from the image, names her father as James Wright and her mother as Lucy Brooks S1146. Probable confirm or correct → She is probably the “only sister, Mrs. O. D. Britton of Hamilton” of her sister Mollie’s 1934 obituary S1642. What is weak: nothing but the town and the surname joins Britain to Britton; her husband is not on a record and is not entered; no marriage record is found. A Britain–Wright marriage record would settle it. She now has a card of her own: Kate Temple Wright. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.

Life

Birth1832
Born about 1832 in Tennessee: she is L. C., 28, in the 1860 census of Dallas County S1004 and Lucy C., 48, in 1880 S345. The 1900 census gives her birth month and year, May 1832 S1089; her own pension declaration gives the day, 9 May 1832, and the Pension Bureau dropped her for death in January 1920 S1607
Census1900
In June 1900 she was a widow, 68, born May 1832 in Tennessee, farming her own land at Eagle Ford, Dallas County; she had borne 6 children, 4 of them living. Her son James B. and his three boys lived with her Confirmed S1089
Census1850
She is probably the “Rosanna Wright”, 18, entered with Dr Jas. Wright, 25, and Martha Wright, 2 months, in the household of Moses T. and Nancy Brooks in Davidson County, Tennessee, on 20 September 1850 S1096. Her age matches, and the household is the one the county history names as her parents’, but the census gives no relationships and calls her Rosanna, not Lucy Probable confirm or correct →
Death1888
Her own sworn declaration for a Mexican War widow's pension, made at Dallas on 28 September 1888 and read from the National Archives' scan, says she was born on 9 May 1832 near Nashville, Tennessee, married James W. Wright as Lucy C. Brooks on 26 October 1848 at Nashville, before Rev. John Hessy, and lived with him until he died on 5 October 1882, five miles south-west of Dallas Confirmed S1607. She was then living at the same place and depended on J. B. Wright for support. She drew $8 a month from 1887 and $20 from 1916; on 4 July 1917 she wrote to the Pension Bureau from Potosi, Texas, and signed the letter. Her last cheque came back from the Potosi postmaster marked “Deceased. Died some time in January”, and the Bureau dropped her from the roll on 26 February 1920 for death in January 1920. The file gives no day of death; a death certificate or a stone would give it.

Family

Marriage1892
Wife of James W. Wright. The History of Dallas County (1892) gives their marriage on 28 October 1848 and calls her Lucy C. Brooks of Davidson County, Tennessee, daughter of Moses T. and Nancy (Tate) Brooks S85. That book is a paid-for family account. The 1850 census below, which puts her husband in Moses T. and Nancy Brooks’s household, is the first record to support it S1096, but it states no relationships, so her parents stay Probable
Children1855
Mother of Mary Jane “Mollie” Wright and of James B. (J. B.) Wright, born 18 December 1855 in Texas, who lived with Mollie and Dee in 1920 and 1930 and died at Potosi on 11 September 1937 S348S349S1074
Marriage1848
The Davidson County register has the licence of James Wright and Louisiana C. Brooks, issued 24 October 1848; the return is blank Confirmed S1145. It is the first original record of the marriage. Her daughter Kate Temple Britain, born in Dallas County on 21 January 1873, died at Hamilton, Texas, on 28 November 1945; her death certificate names her parents as James Wright and Lucy Brooks, both born in Tennessee Confirmed S1146.

Open questions

Open question
⚠️ Her name varies, and is recorded rather than adjudicated. Lucy on Mollie's certificate S81, Lucie on J. B.'s S1074, Lucy C. in the county history and the 1880 census S85S345, and Louisiana C. in her husband's 1878 will, which makes her executrix S84. The “Luciana Catherine” and the dates on her online memorial are not on any record read here and are not used
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Two of the children in Moses T. Brooks’s household in Davidson County, Tennessee, in 1850 and 1860 probably went to Texas as Lucy did. By the Find a Grave index, Octavia Victoria Brooks Taylor (1 May 1834 – 3 May 1879) is buried at Irving, Dallas County, a few miles from Lucy’s Eagle Ford, and Joseph Franklin Brooks (1 March 1842 – 23 May 1916) at Potosi, Taylor County, where Lucy’s son James B. Wright died in 1937 S1565. That supports Moses T. and Nancy Brooks as Lucy’s parents. What is weak or missing: Find a Grave is a compiled index, not a record; that these two are the children of the 1850 household rests on name and age; and it shows only that they lived near each other, not how they were related. Joseph’s 1916 Texas death certificate should name his parents and has not been read. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

🔑 She ran the farm as a widow, in her own name. Farmer stands in her own occupation column on both schedules: $6,000 of real estate in 1850 S98, and $9,240 real with $11,840 personal
better than $21,000 — in 1860 S161, in a household of three.
Census1850
🔑 William Bell, 65, under her roof in 1850 S98 was her BROTHER
her husband's will S172 leaves "Mr. Wm Bell … a house and a support with his Sister as long as he Shall choose to accept it." Born about 1785, nine years older than Jane, so too young to be her father, and the will names the relationship. It is also why he is in her house: Peter provided for it.

Family

Marriage1793
Married Peter Hines Martin (1793–1849) on 2 July 1818. 🔑 The county MARRIAGE REGISTER has now been read S162: the licence issued and the rite solemnized the same day, certified by Rev. William Hume, V.D.M.
the officiant named for the first time. It is the record behind the Dodd compiled index S106.
Children
Marriage1849
Widowed 4 July 1849 at Gallatin, Sumner County S105; still heading her own household in District 12, Sumner County at the 16 June 1860 enumeration S161.
Children1850
🔑 Her son Joseph Daniel Martin is named in his father's will S172
"To Joseph D Martin I give unto a light bay filly now two years old", inside the passage disposing of the estate for the benefit of my children. He is in her household in 1850 at 18 S98 and again in 1860 at 27, by then a farmer in his own right S161. A census names a household, not a parentage, and neither sheet says "son" — and neither does the will: the filiation is carried by the structure of the bequest. The will is the strongest evidence for the link, which stays Probable on his card.
Marriage2026
History of this card. 22 Sep 2026
William Bell, 65 in her 1850 household, had been read as possibly her father; the ages ruled that out and her husband's will (S172), read that day, calls him her brother.
13 Oct 2026 — the note on her son Joseph said the Probable “comes off on the document”; his own card grades the link Probable, because the will (S172) never writes “son”, and this card says the same.

Open questions

Open question
⚠ Birth year UNSETTLED — c.1794 or c.1797–98. The 1850 census gives her age as 56 (born 1793–94) S98; the 1860 census gives 62 (born 1797–98) S161. Ten years apart the ages advance only six, and they cannot both be right. The 1818 marriage favours the earlier year — a bride of about 24 rather than 20 S162; the 1820 tally puts her in the 16–25 bracket and leans later S163; the 1840 bracket, 40–49, contains both and is neutral S164. No record read gives a month or a day. A row stands in the research review queue.
Open question
⚠ The family was larger than the record names. The 1820 tally shows a daughter under 10, never named S163; the 1840 sheet shows six sons born roughly 1821–1835, of whom only David and Joseph are named anywhere S164. Tallies, not names.
Open question
⚠ The 1830 census S174 puts one female aged 30–40 in the household and settles nothing about her birth year
the bracket contains both c.1794 and c.1797–98. It is not cited for either.

Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED as the father of Nannie Chenault. Her obituary in the Nashville Banner of 16 April 1915 calls her the daughter of the late David Chenault, a prominent citizen of this county S1653; she is Nancy, aged 6 and then 15, in his household in the 1850 and 1860 censuses S97S206; and her death certificate gives her father as D. Chenault, born in Kentucky S208. What is weak: the obituary was read as machine-read text, not from the page image; the certificate gives only his initial; his own birth and death dates are not yet on a record read here. Louisa Quisenberry as Nannie’s mother stays Probable. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.

Death1920
The third is Harvey Chenault’s, read from the image: he died in Sumner County on 11 February 1920, and his certificate names his parents as David Chenault and a mother born Quisenberry, both of Kentucky S1275. The informant was a relative, not Harvey himself.

Marriage1811
A compiled genealogy, Colonial Families of the United States, says Louisa Quisenberry, born 29 September 1811 in Madison County, Kentucky, married David Chenault “of the same county” on 25 October 1827, and that they settled in Sumner County, Tennessee, and had 14 children S426. Three of his sons' death certificates name him: Milton's (1917) as D. Chenault of Kentucky S427, and Charles's (1936) in full as David Chenault, born Kentucky, with Louise Quisenberry as the mother S425.
Children1851
His daughter Maria Louise Barry, born 15 July 1851, died in Sumner County on 13 July 1933; her death certificate (no. 15453) names her father David Chenault, born Kentucky Confirmed S961. His 1827 marriage is now read from the register image S96.
Parents1833
DNA is consistent with David and Louisa Chenault as Nannie’s parents (GEDmatch, one line, through their son David Chenault, born 1833): one of Earl’s matches descends from that son. DNA only corroborates here; it proves nothing by itself, so this was held at Probable until a record named David as her father; her 1915 obituary does, and he is Confirmed. Louisa stays Probable.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A son William, called Billy, born about 1854 in Tennessee. Evidence: the 1870 census lists “Wm., 16” in David and Louisa’s household S397, and the 1860 census lists a William S206; the 1936 obituary of Charles Coker Chenault names Charles’s parents as David and Louisa Quisenberry Chenault and “one brother, William Chenault, Sweeney, Texas” S1641; the 1933 notices of Maria Louise name “Billy Chenault of Sweeny, Tex.” S1640. What is weak: the censuses state no relationships; the obituaries are read from newspaper text; and no record yet shows that the Sweeny man is the William of 1870, or gives his birth or death. A Brazoria County census of 1930 or 1940, or his Texas death certificate, would settle it. He now has a card of his own: William Chenault. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Evidence: The 1900 Quisenberry family book, her 1827 marriage (read from the register image), the 1850 and 1860 censuses, her daughter Maria Louise's 1933 death certificate, which gives the mother's maiden name as Quinesberry, and her son Harvey's 1920 death certificate (S1275), which gives it as Quisenberry. DNA is consistent with her as Nannie's mother (GEDmatch, one line, through her son David Chenault, born 1833). Weak or missing: Her birth date and parents come from the compiled book; no record of her birth has been read. The DNA cannot tell her father Colby from his brothers. Not yet confirmed. Know more? citizen and master shoemaker — on his son's baptism register, Kirchberg an der Jagst, 28 April 1844 S69
Burial2026
A shoemaker at the end of his life too — his own burial entry says so, 21 September 2026. Image 639 of the same register has now been read at his own row: burial entry no. 3 of 1870, which names him Schuhmachermeister in Kirchberg a/J. S135. That resolves the conflict this card carried for a day. Three parish entries name his trade: his son's baptism in 1844 S69 and his own burial in 1870 S135 both say shoemaker; only his widow's entry of August 1872 S133 calls him a Schullehrer — a schoolteacher — and that one was written two years after he was dead, in a column describing a late husband. Two contemporaneous readings against one posthumous one. The Schullehrer reading stays on this page as a recorded variant; it is not deleted, and a village schoolteacher really was often a tradesman with letters. But the trade this page carries for him is master shoemaker
Death1870
The 1870 entry checks its own arithmetic. It gives his age at death as 65 years, 6 months and 10 days
which counts forward from the birth it records, 25 July 1804, to exactly 4 February 1870, the death date it records. Birth and death corroborate each other inside a single record, which no index can do. He was buried on 7 February 1870 at ten in the morning S135

The registers give his father more than one trade, and they are one man: the 1835 marriage entry transcribed below calls him a Weber, a weaver, at Erkenbrechtshausen; the 1804 birth register a Tüncher Mstr., a master whitewasher S591; and the 1870 burial entry a Maler. A village weaver who also whitewashed and painted fits all three, and his own card sets the entries out. Eva Barbara’s surname may be written Schmid or Schmidt — the last stroke does not decide it, and it is not forced here S135

Evidence: three register entries of her own, each read from the page image: her baptism at Crailsheim, 31 May 1803 S1688; her marriage at Triensbach, 11 October 1835 S1689; and her burial at Kirchberg, 14 August 1872 S133. Life

Birth1803
Born 26 May 1803 at Crailsheim, Württemberg, and baptised there on 31 May 1803: entry no. 61 of the Crailsheim baptism register for that year, the legitimate daughter of Johann Friederich Lösch, Glockengießer (bell founder), and Maria Dorothea geb. Wolf. Her marriage and burial entries repeat the date S1688S1689S133
Burial1872
Elisabethe Sabina Loesch died 12 August 1872 at 5 a.m., a widow of Kirchberg u. Oa.; buried 14 August 1872 at ten in the morning
her own burial entry, burial entry no. 534, read from the register image S133
Burial1844
Her given name is Elisabetha Sabina. It stands so at her baptism, her marriage and her burial, and a Schwieberdingen family register, written by a different parish for a different purpose, calls her Elisabeth Sabina geb. Lösch S159. Only the 1844 Kirchberg baptism of her son calls her Elisabeth Catharina geb. Lösch S69, and that is a slip of the pastor's pen that no other record repeats. Her son's 1924 death certificate has a third form, Lossetta S68. The Schwieberdingen page also names a daughter, Christiane Juliane Prüger (1838–1911), and shows that Ancestry's offered residence of Schwieberdingen is not hers: she is named there as an absent parent, at Kirchberg

Burial2026
History of this card: 21 Sep 2026
her parents first named, from our reading of the 1872 burial entry; 28 Sep 2026 — her mother carded from two indexes; 11 Oct 2026 — the 1803 baptism, the 1835 marriage and her parents' 1799 banns read from the register images and the 1872 entry re-read: our 21 Sep reading of that entry was mistaken. Her father's second name is corrected from "Heinrich" to "Friedrich", his trade from glazier to bell founder, her mother's maiden name from "Muck" to "Wolf", and her birth from a back-calculated late April to 26 May 1803; card regraded Probable → Confirmed (S1688–S1690, S133).

Mother: Maria Dorothea Wolf Confirmed
Marriage1835
Married Georg Melchior Julius Prüger on 11 October 1835 at Triensbach Confirmed, after banns at Crailsheim and Triensbach. The register gives her birth as 26 May 1803 at Crailsheim and calls her an unmarried woman of that town; the entry is read from the page image S1689S122
Parents1872
Her parents are Johann Friedrich Melchior Lösch, citizen and Glockengießer (bell founder) of Crailsheim, and Maria Dorothea geb. Wolf. Her baptism, her marriage and her burial entry all name them, in three different hands, and the burial entry marks both as deceased by 1872 S1688S1689S133. Their own banns were called at Crailsheim in Advent 1799 S1690
Names1924
Her surname is Lösch, and it is settled. The Württemberg index reads the Kurrent of her burial entry as a different surname altogether; the register itself names her father a Lösch of Crailsheim, as her baptism and marriage do. It is corroborated on another continent: her son Julius Karl's 1924 Pittsburgh death certificate gives his mother's maiden name as "Lossetta Loesch"
the given name garbled by an informant who never saw a Württemberg register, the surname right S68S133

Open questions

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: a widow Eva Kochendörfer appears at (Schwäbisch) Hall in 1886 (Ancestry record 858473), but she is one of ten Kochendörfers there and the family lived at Gerabronn and Langenburg, so she is not taken as this Eva Margaretha. What would settle it: a Hall death or burial entry naming Eva Margaretha.

Research status: PROBABLE as the father of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz. The evidence: her obituary in the Abilene Reporter-News of 8 September 1944, p. 2, read as machine text, says that she was born Pauline Boetcher and came to the United States with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Boetcher, and it names her brothers Otto and Henry Boetcher of Dudley and Albert Boetcher of Oplin and her sister Mrs. E. M. Wristen of Baird; the indexes of the Texas death records of Henry, Otto and Albert Betcher and of Emma Wristen each name August Betcher as the father (Henry’s spells him August Boettcher) S1736. It stays Probable because one obituary, read as machine text and not from the page image, is the only record that names him as Pauline’s father; her own death certificate has not been found; and that he is the August Betcher who died at Clyde in 1919 rests on those brothers and that sister.

Life

Death1919
August Betcher died on 27 August 1919 at Clyde, Callahan County, Texas. He was born in Germany on 10 December 1831. The day of death, and the day and month of birth, are in the index of the Texas death records; the year of birth is in the Find a Grave index, which gives a day of death two days later, 29 August S1736; the death index is followed here. He is buried at Denton Cemetery, Callahan County, Texas: Probable, from the Find a Grave index alone; no stone and no image has been read. The index of the 1900 census gives his birth as December 1832 and the index of the 1910 census as 1833. No image of any of these has been read.
Arrival1900
He came to the United States in the 1870s: the index of the 1900 census gives 1871 and the index of the 1910 census gives 1872 S1736. His daughter’s obituary gives 1871 and says that the family lived in New York City and at South Bend, Indiana, came to Texas in 1878 with the families who founded Colony Hill, and later lived in Callahan County where Dudley is now. The census entries for Pauline herself give 1873 and 1874 for her arrival. Both readings are kept.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Husband of Elisabeth Kamiska Betcher (1838–1926). The index of the 1900 census of Callahan County lists “E. B.” as his wife and the index of 1910 lists “Lebe”; the index of their son Henry’s death record names his parents as August Boettcher and Libby Kamiska, and the index of their daughter Mary Betcher Johnson’s names August Betcher and Lizzie Cominske S1736S1737. What is weak or missing: no marriage record has been found, and every one of these is an index.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Father of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz (1865–1944), by her obituary. Four more of his children have cards, each Probable from the index of a Texas death record that names him as father: Albert Betcher (1865–1954), Emma Betcher Wristen (1871–1967), Otto Betcher (1876–1974) and Henry Edward Betcher (1880–1974). His daughter Mary Betcher Johnson (1863–1925) has a card, Probable: the index of her own Texas death certificate names him as her father S1754. Two more daughters, at home in the index of the 1900 census, have cards, each Probable: Tillie Betcher Farmer (1878–1938) and Alvera Betcher Cutbirth (1883–1980) S1749S1750. His own parents are not in this record.
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the link to Pauline rests on one obituary read as machine text; her own death certificate has not been found; the index gives his son Albert’s birth as 9 June 1865, ten weeks before Pauline’s on 24 August 1865, so one of the two dates is wrong or they are not full brother and sister; the year of his birth differs by a year or two between the indexes; no image has been read. Research status: PROBABLE as the mother of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz. The evidence is strong that she was the wife of August Betcher: the index of her own Texas death record is filed under her husband’s name, and the indexes of two of their children’s death records name her beside him S1737. Pauline’s 1944 obituary, read as machine text, names her parents as Mr. and Mrs. August Boetcher and gives the mother no name of her own. Albert Betcher (1865–1954), a son of August Betcher, is not linked to her: no record names his mother, and his birth is indexed ten weeks before Pauline’s. Her daughter Mary Betcher Johnson (1863–1925) has a card, Probable: the index of her own Texas death certificate names her mother as Lizzie Cominske S1754. Her own parents are not in this record beyond the surname on her death index. Two more daughters, at home in the index of the 1900 census, have cards, each Probable: Tillie Betcher Farmer (1878–1938) and Alvera Betcher Cutbirth (1883–1980) S1749S1750.

Weak or missing: The death certificate's informant, H. D. Life

Birth1831
Born 26 April 1831, Harlan County, Kentucky; died 1911, Island City, Owsley County, Kentucky. Married, probably, Levi Hoskins (see below) S648
Census1860
Three censuses show Levi and Elizabeth Hoskins with the same children, in the same order. In 1860, at Harlan Courthouse, Harlan County, Levi, 30, and Elizabeth, 30, had Ransom, 9, Jefferson, 7, William, 6, Hiram, 5, Mary, 2, and Solomon, one month old S721. In 1870, in Clay County, Levi, 44, and Elizabeth, 40, had James R., 19, Jefferson C., 18, William, 16, Hiram, 14, Mary J., 11, Solomon L., 9, Caroline, 7, John M., 6, Palistine, 4, and a baby of two months whose name is hard to read S722. In 1880, in Owsley County, Levi, 54, and his wife Elizabeth, 49, had Caroline, 18, John M., 16, Palestine, 14, and Leander, 10 S723. Her ages fit a birth in 1830 or 1831, and the Jefferson C., 18, of 1870 fits the Jefferson C. born in 1852 to Levi Hoskins and Elizabeth Brock S648. None of the censuses gives her maiden name, so the Brock link stays probable.
Census1910
In 1910, at Sturgeon in Owsley County, Levi Hoskins, 84, and Elizabeth, 80, married 59 years, were living with their daughter Mary J. and her husband Harden D. Peters S748. This fits a marriage about 1851 and the 1852 birth of Jefferson C. Hoskins, and puts her in Owsley County, where she died.
Death1911
Her death certificate, read again: she died 13 May 1911 at Island City of cerebral apoplexy. The informant who gave her parents' names was H. D. Peters of Island City, who was also the undertaker. In 1910 she and Levi lived with their daughter Mary J. and her husband Harden D. Peters S748, so the informant was very probably her son-in-law, not a stranger S454 Probable confirm or correct →. What is still weak: it is one statement, made 80 years after her birth; a second record naming her parents would settle it.
Death2026
History of this card. 26 Sep 2026
her death certificate (S454) was read again: the date of death and the cause were added, and the informant, first written of as a stranger, was identified as H. D. Peters. 13 Oct 2026 — 4 notes on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; they were added on: 26 Sep 2026 (4 notes). Life

Birth1822
Born 31 August 1822, Madison County, Kentucky; died 20 March 1907, Avon, Kentucky
Record1847
His marriage bond, dated 12 July 1847 in Madison County, Kentucky, is for his marriage to Miss Sarah Tribble of that county. He signed it “C B Quisenberry”, and a John B. Bush also signed S644.
Burial1900
The 1900 family Memorials lists him as the seventh child of Colby Burris Quisenberry. It says he married Sarah Tribble, daughter of Dudley Tribble, on 15 July 1847 and settled in Fayette County near David's Fork church, and it names four children: Ellen, Lucy Belle, Madison and Dudley Tribble S693.
Death1866
A later son, Colbey M. Quisenberry, was born at Lexington on 19 July 1866 and died, a retired farmer, at Hendersonville, North Carolina, on 20 December 1936. His certificate calls his mother “Mary” Tribble, but she was Sarah S694S644.
Census1860
The censuses show him farming near Lexington in Fayette County for twenty years: in 1860, 37, with Sarah and five children and D. M. Thompson, 14 S756; in 1870, 48, with his land worth $20,000 and the youngest, Colby M., 7 S757; and in 1880, 57, at Brier Hill, with “Sallie”, three of their children, and their married daughter Lucy B. Carr and her two small children S758.
Census1900
In 1900, aged 77, born August 1822 and widowed, he still owned his farm in Fayette County (entered “Colby Quisenburg”). With him were his unmarried sons Maddison, 48, Dudley, 43, and Colby Jr., 36, his widowed daughter Bell Cass, 49, and her children Lizzie and Colby Cass Confirmed S1061. The census gives Colby Jr.’s birth as July 1863; his death certificate says 19 July 1866 S694.
Census1870
The 1870 farm schedule for Fayette County (P.O. Lexington) shows his farm: 145 acres improved and 20 of woodland, valued at $13,000, with 5 horses, 5 milch cows, 25 other cattle and 40 hogs; that year it made 85 bushels of wheat and 1,000 of corn Confirmed S1158. The schedule gives no age or family, so the match rests on name and place.
Birth1863
In June and July 1863 the provost marshal for Kentucky’s 7th District entered Colby Quisenberry, 39, a farmer of Fayette County born in Kentucky, with no former service, on the Class II draft list Confirmed S1173. His father, born 1788, was over age, so this is Colby Jr.; the age is a year or two low.
Burial1907
The Lexington Herald of 21 March 1907, the day after he died, carried his funeral notice: services “from his late residence near Avon, Friday morning at 10:30 o’clock” (22 March), and burial in “the family lot in Lexington Cemetery” S1554. Weak: it is a funeral notice read from the newspaper site’s machine text, not the page image, and it names no relative at all, so it adds nothing to the tie to Louisa. A fuller obituary naming a sister “Mrs. Chenault” would settle that; none was found in the Lexington or Richmond papers. The Lexington Cemetery lot record is the next place to look.

Life

Birth1833
Born 26 April 1833, Clark County, Kentucky; died 10 March 1914, Montgomery County, Kentucky
Burial1900
The 1900 family Memorials says he lived at Ewington in Montgomery County and was “named for his maternal great-grandfather, John Martin”, and gives the births of Cora (1861), Ivanora (16 September 1863) and Audley (27 January 1865) S752. In 1880 “Mart” Quisenberry, 47, was farming at Howards Mills with Sarah and their children, and with her mother, Emily Moore, 78, born in Virginia S753. In 1900 he and Sarah F. had been married 40 years; she had borne nine children, seven living S754. In 1910, at 76, he lived with Sarah in their son Earl's home, married 50 years; the census wrote him as “James M.” S755.
Death1914
His obituary in the Mt. Sterling Advocate of 18 March 1914 says he died at his home near Ewington, aged 79; the funeral was at the house, led by Rev. J. S. Wilson of the Baptist church, and he was buried in Machpelah Cemetery. It names seven surviving children: Mrs. Wm. Squires and Audley, of Missouri; Lutie, Emma and Leora; and A. C. and E. B. Quisenberry, of Montgomery County S1562. The name, Ewington and the children show this is the man of this card; the notice names no parents, so his tie to Colby and Lucy stays Probable. Two readings of the day he died: the death certificate says 10 March S494; the Advocate (“last Wednesday”) and the Lexington and Louisville papers of 12 March (“this morning”, under an 11 March dateline) say Wednesday 11 March. This card keeps 10 March, from the certificate; the cemetery record or his stone would settle it. His wife Sarah is not named among the survivors. Read from the newspaper text, not transcribed from the page image.
Census1900
The 1900 household at Howards Mill, by the census index: John M., 67; Sarah F., 61; Lucy, 30; Emma, 28; Alberta, 26; Earl, 24, born December 1875; and Leola, 21 S754. Probable confirm or correct → The “E. B. Quisenberry” of the 1914 obituary is his son Earl. What is weak or missing: the ages are from the index, not re-read from the image, and no record read gives Earl’s middle initial; the “A. C. Quisenberry” of the obituary is not in this household and is not yet placed. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Marriage1859
He married Sarah Moore on 25 October 1859 S689. Their daughter Cora was born in Clark County on 6 November 1861; the register names her parents as Martin J. Quisenberry and Sarah F. Moore, born in Montgomery County S695.
Marriage1859
The Montgomery County marriage list for 1859, copied by the clerk in May 1860, dates the wedding 24 October 1859: John M. Quissenberry, 24, of Clarke County, and Sarah F. Moore, 21, born in Montgomery County, both marrying for the first time S708. The family book says 25 October S689. The list's age of 24 would put his birth about 1835; the card keeps 26 April 1833.
Children1861
A daughter is identified: Cora Quisenberry, born 6 November 1861 in Montgomery County, Kentucky; married William H. Squires; died 3 May 1944 in Montgomery County. Her death record names her father as John Martin Quisenberry and her mother as Sarah Moore S1651. She is the “Mrs. Wm. Squires” of his 1914 obituary. What is weak: the death record and the 1900 census were read from the index, not from the images; and the obituary places her in Missouri, where the 1900 census and her death record have her in Montgomery County
not settled. She now has a card of her own: Cora Quisenberry. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.

Research status: PROBABLE — SAR application 27139 (James Marvin Hinkle, 1914) traces a descent through James Francis Quisenberry, son of Colby Burris Quisenberry and Lucy Bush, and his wife Emily Cameron Chenault S498. Evidence: SAR application 27139, which traces a descent through him and his wife Emily Cameron Chenault; his own 1847 marriage bond with Emily C. Life

Birth1824
Born 15 October 1824, Madison County, Kentucky
Death1877
Died 3 February 1877, Clark County, Kentucky
Burial1900
The 1900 Memorials of the Quisenberry Family, written by his son Anderson Chenault Quisenberry, calls him the eighth child of Colby Burris Quisenberry. It gives his birth in Madison County on 15 October 1824, his death in Clark County on 3 February 1877, and his marriage on 14 October 1847 S689. Colonial Families of the United States gives the same dates S688. Both are compiled books.
Military1863
A Jas. F. Quisenbury, 38, a white farmer born in Kentucky and living in Clark County, is on the June–July 1863 Civil War draft list for Kentucky's 7th District, just below Thos. J., 40, and Roger T., 37 S725 Probable confirm or correct →. The age fits his 15 October 1824 birth and the county fits his home. What is weak: the list gives only a name, an age and a county.
Census1860
The censuses show the family in Clark County: in 1860 James, 35, and “Emma”, 28, with Alice, 12, Anderson, 9, Waller, 7, and Francis, 5 S759; in 1870 Jas. F., 45, farming land worth $26,000, with Emma C., Alice, Walter and Francis, three houses from Golding Quisenberry, 52, whose kinship is not known S760. Emily went by Emma in both.
Death1915
Emily Cameron Chenault's mother: Emily Cameron Probable confirm or correct →. Another page of the 1915 SAR application gives “Anderson Chenault, born 1788, died 1854, and his wife Emily Cameron, born 1796, died 1836, married 1816” S859; the Madison County marriage bond of 1847 names Anderson Chenault as “father of Emily C. Chenault” S870. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: the bond names the father only, and the mother rests on the compiled SAR application; the day and place of birth and death that trees give her are not in any record read.

Marriage1832
Married Emily Cameron Chenault (about 1832–1904); the SAR application says 1846, but their marriage bond is dated 11 October 1847 S643. Her parents were probably Anderson Chenault and Emily Cameron (below)
Marriage1847
His own marriage bond survives. On 11 October 1847, in Madison County, Kentucky, he gave bond, with David W. Chenault as surety, for his marriage to Miss Emily C. Chenault, and signed it “James F. Quisenberry” S643. The SAR application's 1846 is probably a year early.
Parents1832
Emily Cameron Chenault was born in February 1832; in 1900 she was living with her son Waller in Clark County, the mother of four children, three then living S690. A 1915 SAR application by her grandson names her parents as Anderson Chenault (1788–1854) and Emily Cameron, and her grandfather as William Chenault, a Revolutionary soldier S691; Colonial Families agrees S688. Probable confirm or correct → Evidence: two compiled sources name her parents. What is weak: no record made in her lifetime names them. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.
Children1848
Their daughter Emma Alice Hinkle, born 26 October 1848, died in Robertson County, Tennessee, on 4 January 1931. Her death certificate names her parents as James F. Quisenberry and Emmily C. Chenault S692. She had married Joseph (or Josiah) Addison Hinkle in 1870 S689S691.
Children1853
Their son Walter (Waller) Quisenberry, born in Clark County on 12 January 1853, died at Winchester on 6 November 1914. His death certificate names his parents as Jas. Quisenberry and “Emma” Chenault S698S690.

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: that the Barnet-born Caroline Kent Gilfillan is the Carrie K. Gilfillan of Henry’s records rests on her name, her age and the neighbouring towns; no record read states it. The birth record and the 1850 census were read from the index, not the images. Her birth record names her mother as Hannah, but the 1850 household has a Susanna, 42, instead; Hannah T. Gilfillan, who died at Barnet in 1844, is now entered as her probable mother, and Susanna is taken to be a second wife, the Susan Henderson whom a Moses Gilfillan married at Ryegate on 7 May 1846 S1686. Her mother’s maiden name is probably Kent, Caroline’s own middle name: a Moses Gilfillen married Hannah J. Kent at Boston on 8 February 1829 S1685. Both marriages are known from indexes only. Her marriage to William J. Henderson and her death have not been read, and no death is entered. Her marriage record, or a death record naming her parents, would settle it. Know more? His wife was Mary Kerr. In June 1870 she heads her own household at Carmichaels with their son and Alfred is not in it S1034, so he had probably died by then. Their other nine children are named, with their 1905 homes, on Edward Gregg’s card; none has a card of their own

Open questions

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: his birth, about 1799, is worked out from the one census age, 51 in 1850, and that figure is not clearly written. No record of his death has been read, so no death is given. His parents and his own birthplace are not known. The obituary was read from machine-read page text, not the page image. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: Kerr rests on that one phrase, read from machine-read page text and not from the page image; no marriage record, and no record of her own, gives her maiden name. Her birth, about 1805, is worked out from her census ages. Her parents are not known. No record of her death has been read, so no death is given. Her marriage record, or a death record naming her father, would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
