The record in detail

Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Life

Birth1862
Baptised 9 June 1862 at Santa Bárbara, Cedros, on Faial, read from the register image S1228. His gravestone and the 1900 census say June 1863 in "Azores Port"; the baptism entry is the earlier record and is preferred. His own line in the 1900 census: age 36 as the page reads S141 (37 in the FamilySearch index), Head of household, married 13 years, arrived in the United States in 1888 S47. He is indexed in that census under the Anglicised spelling "Frank Silver", which is why a search for Silva in Alameda County does not find him.
Death1946
Island: Faial Confirmed
his own November 1946 obituary says it in plain words: "He was a native of Fayal, the Azores" S67, and his baptism is in the Cedros register S1228. The 1896 registers of two Portuguese fraternal lodges at Mission San Jose, UPEC Council No. 10 and IDES Council No. 1, record a Francisco da Silva, 33, married, farm labourer, island Fayal, with Anna da Silva as his heir; and in the same IDES book in 1914 a Frank Silva, 16, born "Mission", names Anna L. Silva as his mother S64S65. The obituary names the same lodges, the same wife and the same son as those books, so the lodge rows are this man. The 1920 and 1930 census sheets write only "Portugal" and 1940 "Azores" S48S49S149: the same fact at lower resolution.
Census1910
The 1910 census of Washington Township puts father and son in one household on one line-pair
Frank Jr entered as Son, age 12, born California of two Portuguese parents — and records him a Foreman in a wine cellar (the column reads Foreman, Wine Cellar, wage earner), owning his house free of mortgage, married 23 years S146. In 1910 his wife could speak English and he could not. The column asks whether able to speak English, or, if not, give language spoken; Annie's cell reads English, Frank's Portuguese. Ancestry files hers as Native Tongue: English, the reverse of what the column says. By 1930 both are marked as speaking English S147
Census1920
The 1920 census puts four of them under one roof. At Mission San Jose Town in Washington Township
E.D. 213, sheet 8-B, lines 59–63, dwelling 131, family 132, enumerated 17 January 1920 — the household is Frank (Head), Anna (Wife), Frank (Son), Mildred entered as Daughter-in-law, and a boarder, Frank Vargas, aged 7. He is a Farmer on a general farm he holds owned, free of mortgage, with the farm-schedule mark in the margin. The schedule records ages only, no months or days S150. Aileane Marie Silva, born August 1918, is not on this sheet: she should be about sixteen months old. The record does not explain her absence and no explanation is supplied for it here.
Census1930
The 1930 census finds him still in Washington Township, in Mission Precinct, enumerated 7 April 1930
age 66, owning his home, valued $1,000, no radio set, occupation beginning "Farm", with Anna beside him at 61 S147. Aileane Marie Silva is in his household, at 11, entered as grand daughter. Her father Frank Jr had died in 1924; her grandparents were raising her. It is the first document placing her in that house. The sheet gives only an age, bracketing her birth to 8 April 1918 × 7 April 1919
Census1940
The 1940 census, read from the image, finds him at Mission San Jose in Washington Township
E.D. 1-180, sheet 20-B, line 59, household 481, enumerated 1 May 1940: age 76, Head, Widowed, birthplace "Azores", citizenship Na, home owned and valued $1,000 S149. He is enumerated alone and is his own informant: the enumerator's circled informant mark stands beside his name. Residence on 1 April 1935: "Same house." With 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and his son's 1918 draft card, the family is documented in Washington Township without a gap S148. The 1940 sheet says Mission San Jose, not Niles. The FamilySearch index of E.D. 1-180 places the return at Niles S50; the printed header of the sheet itself gives Mission San Jose, a few miles away in the same township, and the sheet is preferred.
Census1940
He owned and ran a grocery store. In 1940: occupation Owner, industry Grocery Store, 52 weeks worked in 1939, 48 hours in the census week, no wage line but other income of $50 or more
the signature of a self-employed proprietor. He was a farmer in 1930, so this is a documented change of trade at the age of 76, and it is the record behind the "former farmer and grocer" in his own obituary S149S67
Census1900
His year of arrival is not settled: four census sheets give four years. 1900 says 1888, 1910 says 1887, 1920 says 1895 and 1930, read off the image, says 1891. For his wife the same four sheets give three years
1895, 1887, 1895 and 1899 — twelve years from the earliest to the latest. Both 1930 immigration cells are over-inked and are read at high magnification against clean entries elsewhere on the same page. No year on this page is hardened. Only a passenger manifest or the naturalisation paper can close it S141S146S150S147
Birth1910
The age columns do not settle his birth year; the baptism does. Age 45 on 19 April 1910 implies a birth in April 1864×April 1865. Age 66 on 7 April 1930 means 8 April 1863 to 7 April 1864, and age 76 on 1 April 1940 means 2 April 1863 × 1 April 1864: June 1863 falls inside both windows, so those two sheets are consistent with the stone. The 1920 sheet enters him as 64 and Anna as 62, seven to ten years too old, while Frank Jr at 22 and Mildred at 21 on the same five lines are exact; those two ages are an informant's guess and are rejected here. An age column is the enumerator's arithmetic, and Ancestry's abt 1864 is subtraction from it, not a reading. The 1862 Faial baptism outranks every age column, and 1862 is not 1863 S146S147S149S150S1228
Death1946
Died 27 November 1946 at San Jose Hospital, aged 83, a resident of Mission San José for more than fifty years, a former farmer and grocer, member of IDES Council No. 1, St. Anthony's Sodality and UPEC S67; buried beside his wife at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fremont / Centerville
the Portuguese Catholic cemetery of the Mission San Jose district S54
Death1863
A California Death Index entry for a Frank Silva, b. 1 June 1863, d. 27 November 1946 at Santa Barbara shares his death date and the birth month on his stone and is not him: the obituary puts this man's death at San Jose Hospital in Alameda County, for which that index is simply incomplete. Recorded here, and deliberately not attached, so that nobody buys the wrong certificate.
Photograph1908
Studio portrait, about 1908–1912 Confirmed (family testimony): he, his wife Anna and their son Frank Jr, from the print kept by his great-granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins, who named all three on 1 October 2026: “Frank Da Silva Jr. My mother’s Dad, his Mother and Father Frank Da Silva Senior”. In Photos below.
Census2026
History of this card. 13 Oct 2026
the 1920 census ages were described as eight to ten years too old; by his baptism of 9 June 1862 (S1228) he was 57 that January, so the sheet’s 64 is seven years over, and the sentence now says seven to ten. 13 Oct 2026 — the note on his year of arrival had named three census sheets and called them four answers, and gave eleven years as the spread of the years for his wife; it is restated from the four sheets that give a year (1900, 1910, 1920, 1930), and her years, 1887 to 1899, are twelve apart. The same count was carried to S146, S147, S150 and the Silva line page. The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 1 Oct 2026 (1 note), 4 Oct 2026 (1 note). The marks and their dates were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed. One more note (Aileane in the 1930 household) carried a “new” mark with no date on it; that mark was taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the note was changed.
12 Oct 2026 — two corrections were folded into the standing text; neither carried a date. The card once said three censuses pointed at 1864: that was arithmetic on index ages and was withdrawn (S146, S147). The card once placed the 1940 return at Niles, after the FamilySearch index (S50); the sheet header reads Mission San Jose (S149). The “new” marks on the 1930 census note in the sources list (ages at first marriage; Aileane in the household) were taken off the same day. The same place correction was carried to the Silva line page, the timeline, the migration page and the front-page chart, which had still said Niles.
22 Sep 2026 — S146, S147, S150 were read again from the image at full resolution; what the re-read found is in the standing note of each source in the sources list, and the dated “supplement” label was taken off those notes on 12 Oct 2026. 13 Oct 2026 — the top of this card gave his birth as June 1863 only, and its heading still said “new to this record, 14 Sept 2026”; both now give the baptism of 9 June 1862 read on 4 Oct 2026 (S1228), with the June 1863 of the stone and the 1900 census beside it. The note on his parents had opened “His parents are now carded” and said it corrected a 21 Sep reading of his mother’s surname as “Silveira”. No grade was changed.
13 Oct 2026 (second pass) — the card was rewritten as standing text: thirty-one notes became sixteen. The three notes on the age columns are one; the five on his naturalisation are one; his death, given twice, is given once; the working marks and the label “Re-read 22 September 2026” were taken off. Two statements changed. The marriage note was headed “about 1887–1888” and now leads with the register date of 12 June 1886 that it already cited (S1232). The 1920 note said the 1910 age agreed with June 1863; by the card’s own arithmetic it does not (45 on 19 April 1910), and the sentence was dropped. No grade was changed. 13 Oct 2026 — the notes on the 1900 and 1930 census sheets in the sources list (S141, S147) were restated against the Cedros registers: the marriage of 12 June 1886 (S1232) is given as settled and the question left open is only whether the couple crossed together. 13 Oct 2026 — his age on the 1900 census had been quoted as 37 from the FamilySearch index (S47); the page reads 36 (S141) and the card now gives the page.

Family

Parents1843
His parents. His baptism entry names his father José Francisco da Silva, lavrador of Pedro Miguel, and his mother Florência Luiza and names his elder brother José Francisco da Silva Jr (c.1843–1878) S1228
Marriage1886
Married 12 June 1886 at Santa Bárbara, Cedros, to Anna Luiza do Coração de Jesus, read from the register: he 24, she 19 S1232. The American sheets agree within a year or two: the 1930 census records his age at first marriage as 24 and hers as 19, 1910 says married 23 years and 1900 thirteen S147S146S47
Children1910
Four children born, one living. In 1910 Annie is recorded with 4 children born and only 1 living; in 1900 she had two born, two living
Mary, b. August 1896, and Frank. Mary and two further children, unnamed on any sheet held here, died between 1900 and 1910. No names, no dates, no places are on the document and none are supplied S146

Open questions

Not found
He was naturalised; the file is not found. The 1900 return records him alien. The 1920 sheet writes immigrated 1895 and naturalised 1904 against both him and Anna, the only sheet that gives a year S150. Column 23 of the 1930 sheet reads Na for both, in a clean cell, checked against the enumerator's capital N in "No" on the same rows; the 1940 sheet reads Na again; the 1910 cell is blotted and cannot be read S147S149S146. A naturalisation year on a census is a pointer, not a certificate. It points at an Alameda County or federal naturalisation file of about 1904, which would carry an arrival date and often the vessel. Until it is found, 1904 is the enumerator's answer and not a recorded date.

Life

Birth1867
Born 7 April 1867 and baptised on 22 April at Santa Bárbara, Cedros, on Faial, read from the register image S1233. The 1900 census has her born in "Azores Port"
listed as Wife, age 33, on the same 1900 census page as her husband, read from the image S141; the FamilySearch index of the sheet gives 34 S47
Death1938
Died 17 December 1938, Alameda County; buried beside her husband at St. Joseph's S53S54. The dates interlock without strain: the 1940 census records Frank Sr as Widowed.
Census1930
She is the woman who raised Earl's grandmother. In 1930, six years after her son's death, Aileane is in her house, enumerated as "Granddaughter" S49
Census1900
Her year of arrival is not settled. The four census sheets that ask give three years: 1900 1895, 1910 1887, 1920 1895 and 1930 1899; for her husband they give 1888, 1887, 1895 and 1891. They married on Faial in 1886, so every one of those years is after the wedding, and where the sheets give him an earlier year than her they would have him crossing first. Recorded, not resolved; a passenger list or the naturalisation papers would close it S141S146S150S147
Death1905
Her death is carried in the California Death Index, 1905–1939, and the printed page
read from the image, not from a transcription — gives her state file number 71446: SILVA · ANNA · L · age 70 · 12 17 38 · 71446, page 6332 S136. There are eleven Anna Silvas on that page, which is why the line had to be read rather than assumed. Name, age and date all match what is already recorded; the index confirms and overturns nothing.
Death
Her death certificate has not been ordered. The death index is a printed list of surname, initial, age, date and file number, and carries no parents and no birthplace; 71446 is the handle for ordering the actual California death certificate from Sacramento S136. Her parents and birthplace are known without it, from her baptism entry (below); the certificate would be a second, American record of them.
Photograph1908
Studio portrait, about 1908–1912 Confirmed (family testimony): she, her husband Frank Silva Sr and their son Frank Jr, from the print kept by her great-granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins, who named all three on 1 October 2026: “Frank Da Silva Jr. My mother’s Dad, his Mother and Father Frank Da Silva Senior”. Record2026
History of this card. The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 1 Oct 2026 (1 note), 4 Oct 2026 (1 note). The marks and their dates were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed.
22 Sep 2026
S146, S147 were read again from the image at full resolution; what the re-read found is in the standing note of each source in the sources list, and the dated “supplement” label was taken off those notes on 12 Oct 2026. 13 Oct 2026 — the top of this card gave her birth as about 1866–68 and one note said her maiden name was not found, while the note added on 4 Oct 2026 gave her baptism and her parents (S1233, S1235). The card now states the birth of 7 April 1867 and her parents once; the death-index note keeps the file number and says what the certificate would add. No grade was changed.
13 Oct 2026 (second pass) — the working marks were taken off. The arrival note had said the 1930 sheet contradicted itself, because ages at first marriage of 24 and 19 put the wedding about 1888, before either arrival, and offered a marriage in the Azores as one of two readings. The register gives the marriage at Cedros on 12 June 1886 (S1232; the page image is among her husband’s documents), so the note now states the marriage and lists the four arrival years as her husband’s card does. No grade was changed. 13 Oct 2026 — the notes on the 1900 and 1930 census sheets in the sources list (S141, S147) were restated against the Cedros registers: her birth of 7 April 1867 (S1233) and the marriage of 12 June 1886 (S1232) are given as settled, where the 1900 note had said her year stayed open. The caption on the compiled-tree screenshot among her documents no longer gives her birth as about 1866–68. The page image of the 1886 marriage entry (S1232) was added to her documents; it had been on her husband’s card only. 13 Oct 2026 — her age on the 1900 census had been quoted as 34 from the FamilySearch index (S47); the page reads 33 (S141) and the card now gives the page.

Family

Children1910

three children of Frank and Anna died before April 1910 and are named nowhere in this research. No names, no dates, no places are on the document and none are supplied S146
Marriage1910
She had the English in this house first. In 1910 her cell reads English and her husband's Portuguese
Ancestry's Native Tongue: English inverts the column. Frank was Foreman, Wine Cellar on the same sheet S146
Marriage1886
Married 12 June 1886 at Santa Bárbara, Cedros, to Francisco da Silva, read from the register: she 19, authorised by her mother, he 24 S1232. The 1930 census gives the same ages at first marriage S147
Parents1867
Her parents. Her own 1867 baptism, read from a CulturAçores archive scan, names her father Thomás Pereira d'Escobar (c.1838–1882) and her mother Anna Luiza do Coração de Jesus, native of Capelo, whose own parents José Duarte Pereira and Anna Luiza are confirmed by her 1858 marriage record S1233S1235

five records name her so: the 1879 Alameda marriage index, "L. da G. de Mendonca" S315; Joseph's 1913 marriage, "Louisa Mendosa" S317; Helen's 1918 marriage, "Louise Mendonca" S319, and Helen's NUMIDENT, "Louisa Mendonca" S320; and Mildred's 1960 death index entry S316. Frank's 1914 marriage gives "Louise Silver" S318. The fuller form "Dutra de Mendonça" Probable confirm or correct → comes from a FamilySearch tree S322.
Parents1847
Parents Probable confirm or correct → Francisco Dutra de Mendonça and Francisca Eugénia of Feteira, Faial, the Azores. A FamilySearch tree places her in their family S322, and the baptisms of two of its children, Francisca (1847) and Manoel (1850), are indexed at Horta S321. Her own 1856 baptism has not been found, so the link is not yet proven.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → She probably died on 5 July 1936 in California: the California Death Index has “Rosa, Luiza G. A.”, aged 80, file 40139 S624. The name fits her maiden name, Louise da G. de Mendonça, and the age fits a birth about 1856. It is filed under Rosa, not Rose, and the certificate has not been ordered, so it stays probable. She is alive in January 1920 as head of her own household at Washington Township S314.

Life

Birth1857
Born 8 August 1857, Page County, Virginia
the Page County birth register, which indexes the family under KAUFMAN while every census writes Coffman S82
Death1938
Died 28 April 1938 at Merkel, Taylor County, Texas, aged 80, widowed; buried Dudley Cemetery, Callahan County
his Texas death certificate no. 20503, which names his father as David Coffman and leaves his mother's name blank S20. FindAGrave's "Callahan County" is the cemetery's county, not the place he died.
Birth1857
Born in 1857, not 1856: the year 1856 rests only on an unsourced memorial. The birth register, the death certificate's stated age, and a family record typed by his grandson Robert William Coffman all give 1857 S72.
Photograph2026
He and Mollie are now placed in their own family photograph, 18 September 2026. Virginia "Ginger" Coffman returned a labelled copy of the group photograph held under their names, captioned in her own hand "Dee Coffman Family / Circa 1924", with fourteen faces named S108: Dee seated at the centre with the white moustache and Mollie seated beside him; standing behind them James Burton Coffman, Robert William Coffman, Sue, Lucy, Lydia Mae and Lee Coffman; seated to the left of centre James David Coffman; and among the children Lydia Francis Coffman, Ila Belle Coffman, Horace Glenn Coffman, David Coffman and Jesse Coffman. Ten of the fourteen are new
four had been picked out on 16 September by Earl's uncle David Coffman. This adds to the record; it corrects nothing: the photograph was always this family's. The names are family testimony Probable confirm or correct →, and her circa 1924 narrows the page's old estimate of 1923–1930 without turning into a document. One small echo: the boy she names Horace Glenn Coffman is almost certainly the "1 Horace Coffman (one and only)" counted in red ink on Robert William Coffman's own notes sheet S103 — two family sources, decades apart, touching the same child.
Census1870
His census trail, 1870–1930. In 1870 he was 12 and at school in his father's household at Luray S344. In 1880 he was a share tenant farming 60 acres in Precinct 7, Dallas County, four dwellings from his father-in-law Dr James W. Wright S345S346. In 1910 he was renting near Abilene, and Mollie reported 10 children born, 7 living
among them Daisy and Dee Carl, who are not on the 1924 photograph S347. By 1920 he owned a mortgaged farm in Precinct 7, Taylor County S348, and in 1930 his own home on RFD 2 Abilene, with Mollie's widowed brother James B. Wright living with them S349. Their daughter Daisy Holly, born 5 April 1896, died at Abilene on 17 March 1934, nine months before her mother S350.

Family

Parents1883
His father's will (Page County Will Book P–S, p. 158, proved 28 February 1883) names him as David E. Coffman, one of five children. That makes three documents for his parentage S489S82S20.
Marriage1878
Married Mary Jane "Mollie" Wright on 27 October 1878 at Dallas S72
Parents1812
Parents David Carl Coffman (13 Dec 1812 – 25 Jan 1883, Luray) and Emily M. Thornhill (7 Apr 1820 – 21 Jul 1868, Hawksbill), both of Page County, Virginia
the birth register names David C. and Emily M. S82 and their chalked gravestones supply the dates S83. His middle name is his mother's given name; she died when he was ten.
Children
Children: Jesse Lee Coffman, Dee Carl Coffman. Each is CONFIRMED on that person’s own card
Children1886
Father of Lucy C. Coffman Chrane (1886–1929): the index of her Texas death certificate names her parents as D. E. Coffman and Mollie Wright, and her funeral notice of 31 December 1929, read as machine text, names them as Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Coffman of Potosi, at whose home the family had gathered on Christmas Day 1929 Probable confirm or correct → S1717S1732
Children1896
Father of Daisy Hope Coffman Holley (1896–1934): her Texas death certificate, read from the image, names her parents as D. E. Coffman and Mary J. Wright Confirmed S350
Children1884
Father of Joseph Franklin Coffman (1884–1966): the index of his Texas death record names both parents, and his 1966 obituaries name three of his brothers and sisters Probable confirm or correct → S1742.
Children1893
Father of Sue Mary Coffman Atchley (1893–1979): the index of her Social Security claim names both parents, and her brothers’ obituaries of 1966 and 1967 name her Probable confirm or correct → S1740.
Children2026
History of this card. 12 Oct 2026
Joseph Franklin Coffman and Sue Mary Coffman Atchley listed as children when their cards were written, both Probable (S1742, S1740). 4 Oct 2026 — a children line added to this card; the “new” mark and the date were taken off the line on 12 Oct 2026, with no fact or grade changed. 16 Sep 2026 — the birth year was corrected from 1856, which this card had carried from an unsourced memorial, to 1857 (S72). 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 25 Sep 2026 (1 note). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed. 13 Oct 2026 — the census-trail note carried “added 24 September 2026” in its heading; the words were taken out, nothing else changed.

Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED. Her 1934 Texas death certificate, read from the image, names her parents as James W. Wright and Lucy Brooks S81, and the 1892 History of Dallas County lists her among Dr. Wright’s children as the wife of David E. Coffman S85. Her son James David Coffman’s death certificate names her as Molly Jane Wright S134. The naming of her face in the family photograph is graded separately, above, and is Probable.
Show detailsHide details

A face, at last. This is a detail cut from the Dee Coffman family group photograph, not a portrait sitting of its own: she is seated beside her husband, spectacles, light blouse, a small child at her shoulder. Virginia "Ginger" Coffman, Earl's aunt, returned a copy of that photograph with names typed onto the faces and placed Mollie in it S108. She has had no established photograph anywhere in this record until now. The identification is family testimony — a relative naming relatives she knew — Probable; the photograph itself and its attribution to her family are unchanged and stay Confirmed. The link opens the full labelled frame, because the frame is the evidence and this crop is a derivative of it.

Life

Birth1859
Born 23 October 1859, Dallas County, Texas S21S81
Death1934
Died 6 December 1934, Potosi, Taylor County, Texas
Death1934
Died 6 December 1934 at 7:20 p.m., two miles south of Potosi, Taylor County, aged 75, of cerebral haemorrhage; buried Dudley Cemetery on the 8th
her Texas death certificate no. 56943, read from the image S81
Census1860
In the 1860 census, read from the image, she is Mary J., 9/12, born Texas, in the Dallas County household of Jas. W. Wright, 35, physician and farmer, with L. C., 28, Sally, 8, and Jas. B., 4 Confirmed S1004. Her parents appear here in a record made in her infancy. Thomas Wright, 67, born North Carolina, and Martha, 65, lived next door; they may be her grandparents, but that rests on adjacency alone. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Record1935
She left a will. On 19 June 1935 the Taylor County Court admitted the will of Mary Jane Coffman to probate, case no. 2282, and named David E. Coffman executor, as the will asked; her husband was David Emily “Dee” Coffman, but the page does not say how the executor was related to her Confirmed S1099. Only the first page of the will has been read
Census1870
In the 1870 census she is Mary J., 10, born in Texas, in Dallas County with her father, Dr James W. Wright, 45, a physician, and her mother Luciana, 38, both born in Tennessee. W. A. Brooks, 35, also born in Tennessee, lived with them Confirmed S1132.
Record1934
The Texas death index agrees: Coffman, Mary Jane, Taylor County, 6 December 1934, certificate 56943 S1288
Death1934
Her obituary in the Abilene Daily Reporter of 7 December 1934 agrees with her death certificate on her birth, 23 October 1859 at Dallas, and adds that she married D. E. Coffman on 27 October 1878 and settled in Taylor County in 1880 Confirmed S1642. It names five children, “an only brother”, J. B. Wright of Potosi, and “an only sister”, Mrs. O. D. Britton of Hamilton, who is not yet identified. The funeral was at the Dudley Church of Christ on 8 December, after an illness of five days. The paper says she died “Friday morning”, 7 December; the certificate, read from the image, says 6 December at 7:20 p.m., and this record keeps the certificate. The obituary is read from the newspaper text, not the page image. Know who Mrs. Britton was? Use “Add to this record”. Her sister Kate Temple Wright now has a card of her own.
Death2026
History of this card. The portrait detail was added on 18 Sep 2026, two child links on 4 Oct 2026 and the obituary on 10 Oct 2026. The “new” marks and their dates were taken off those three notes on 12 Oct 2026; no fact or grade changed. The warning on the gravestone year stands, because the stone and the certificate still disagree. 12 Oct 2026
Joseph Franklin Coffman and Sue Mary Coffman Atchley listed as children when their cards were written, both Probable (S1742, S1740). The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 28 Sep 2026 (1 note), 29 Sep 2026 (1 note), 30 Sep 2026 (1 note), 1 Oct 2026 (2 notes). The marks and their dates were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed. 13 Oct 2026 — two notes carried “added 24 September 2026” and “added 10 October 2026” in mid-text; the words were taken out, nothing else changed.

Family

Children1881
Mother of James David “Jim” Coffman (1881–1972): his Texas death certificate names her as Molly Jane Wright S134, and FamilySearch indexes of his death, of the deaths of his brothers Dee Carl and Joseph Franklin, and of his brother Jesse Lee's Social Security record all give the parents as D. E. Coffman and Mary Jane Wright S831.
Parents1937
Her parents, James W. Wright and Lucy Brooks, now have cards of their own Confirmed. Her brother J. B. Wright's 1937 Texas death certificate, read from the image, names the same parents, James Wright and Lucie Brooks, both born Tennessee, and its informant was her son J. D. Coffman S1074.
Children1886
Mother of Lucy C.
Mother of Daisy Hope Coffman Holley (1896–1934): her Texas death certificate, read from the image, names her parents as D. E. Coffman and Mary J. Wright Confirmed S350
Children1884
Mother of Joseph Franklin Coffman (1884–1966): the index of his Texas death record names both parents, and his 1966 obituaries name three of his brothers and sisters Probable confirm or correct → S1742.
Children1893
Mother of Sue Mary Coffman Atchley (1893–1979): the index of her Social Security claim names both parents, and her brothers’ obituaries of 1966 and 1967 name her Probable confirm or correct → S1740.
Parents1892
Parents Dr. James W. Wright and Lucy C. Brooks, both born Tennessee
named on that certificate S81, and confirmed from the other direction by History of Dallas County (1892), pp. 687–688, which lists "Mary J., wife of David E. Coffman, of Taylor county" among Dr. Wright's six children S85
Marriage1878
Married David Emily "Dee" Coffman on 27 October 1878 at Dallas
three months after her father signed his will, which leaves the estate to his two youngest children, Jessee and Kate S72S84
Children2026
Her son's death certificate names her Molly Jane Wright, 21 September 2026. James David "Jim" Coffman died at Abilene in December 1972 and the informant was his own son, Jesse J. Coffman
her grandson, writing her name as the family said it S134. This is an addition to her record, not a correction of it. Mollie is what her family called her and what her son's record gives; the formal Mary Jane on her own certificate S81 and in the 1924 photograph's caption S108 is the same woman, written formally. Nothing here demotes either name
Parents1880
Her parents on a census. In 1880 Dr James W. Wright, 55, physician, and Lucy C., 48, lived with Jesse, 10, and Kate, 7, four dwellings from the newlyweds in Precinct 7, Dallas County S345. Her brother James B. Wright lived with her and Dee in 1920 and 1930 S348S349. In 1910 she was the mother of 10 children, 7 then living S347; her daughter Daisy Holly died at Abilene on 17 March 1934 S350.
Children
Children: Jesse Lee Coffman, Dee Carl Coffman, each Confirmed on their own card

⚠️ Her gravestone and her memorial give 1935 S21; the state certificate and the family typescript S72 both say 1934, and the certificate is followed here. The stone's year is most likely the registrar's filing stamp, JAN 10 1935, on the certificate itself.

Life

Birth1858
Born 9 April 1858, Owsley County, Kentucky S160S22
🔑 The Owsley County birth register for 1858 records it on row 5 in a county clerk's hand at the time: "April 9th", child Wm. A. Bowles, Alive, born Owsley Co., Ky S160.
Death1856
His death certificate gives his birth as 9 April 1856; the Owsley County birth register, made at the time, says 1858, and 1858 is used here. The memorial flags the discrepancy itself.
Census1940
The Amarillo directory for 1940 lists his wife as a widow, “Iona B (wid W A)” S373.
Death1936
His death is in the Texas death index as certificate 23075, Taylor County, 3 April 1936 S557. A different William Anderson Bowles, of Wood County, died in 1940; he is not this man.
Record1907
A William A. Bowles was appointed postmaster at Potosi, Taylor County, on 15 May 1907, succeeding William L. Simpson Probable confirm or correct → S988. Evidence: the name and the family's town; his son William Jr. was 14. Weak: the register gives no age or other identifier. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Census1918
In 1918 James D. Bowles, 36, born in Arkansas, was a preacher at Rogers, Benton County, Arkansas, when the birth of his second child, Richard William Bowles, born 1918, was registered; the mother is Bessie Bagby, 31, born in Missouri Confirmed S1142.
Death1936
Died 3 April 1936, Abilene, Taylor County, Texas; buried Potosi Cemetery S22
Census1918
In September 1918 his son James Daniel Bowles, 36, born 23 January 1882, registered for the draft at Rogers, Benton County, Arkansas: he was then a minister of the Christian Church at Rogers, living at 302 North 5th, and named his wife, Mrs Bessie Alice Bowles, as his nearest relative S1356
Record1936
He left a will. On 10 April 1936, a week after his death, the Probate Court column of the Abilene Daily Reporter listed the “application of S. A. Bowles to probate the will of William Anderson Bowles, deceased” Confirmed S1643. S. A. Bowles is probably his son Solomon Alfred Bowles; the notice gives initials only. The will and the Taylor County probate file are not yet read; they should name his children. No obituary has been found: the paper’s pages for the week he died have no searchable text and are still to be read by eye. If you have the will or an obituary, use “Add to this record”.
Census1910
Two censuses show the children at home: 1910 S186 and 1920 S188, both of Justice Precinct 7, Taylor County Confirmed. The 1910 index entry reads William A., 52, and Iona B., 43, with Orrie B., Marttie E., Ida J. and Sarah among the children. A child listed in those two households is confirmed by them; children who had left home by 1910 rest on other records and keep their own grades. Marttie E. is taken to be Martha Ellen, whose card stays Probable until her age in that entry is checked. The two pages were read from the images for this record on 22 September 2026; the family tree’s notes for him cite the same two censuses.
Record2026
History of this card: 12 Oct 2026
card rewritten as one standing text: the “new” markers and “added” dates taken out of the lines, each child’s records brought together, the 1856/1858 line reworded; no fact and no grade changed.
11 Oct 2026 — John Wesley Bowles regraded Probable → Confirmed as his son (card raised 8 Oct 2026; S186, S188, S1569); twin wording brought in line with his obituary. Iona Belle’s dates, until then from Find a Grave alone, found in two indexes (S1687). Frances given a card of her own (S1663). The family tree’s notes for him written from the index, naming the 1910 and 1920 censuses (S186, S188).
10 Oct 2026 — probate notice (S1643) and daughter Martha Ellen (S1644) added.
7 Oct 2026 — daughter Sudie Beth added (S1547, S1548).
5 Oct 2026 — James Daniel’s 1918 draft registration added (S1356).
1 Oct 2026 — 1932 Los Angeles directory (S1119) and the 1918 birth registration at Rogers (S1142) added.
30 Sep 2026 — William Jr.’s 1917 draft registration added (S1082).
29 Sep 2026 — the 1900 household line re-read at full resolution: James D., born probably January 1882, where the earlier transcription had James E., June 1882 (S140). Potosi postmaster (S988), William Jr.’s 1942 draft card (S1022) and 1920 census (S1023), James Daniel in 1920 (S1026) and Robert Anthony in 1930 (S1027) added; William Jr.’s birth date, until then from Find a Grave, is on his own draft card.
28 Sep 2026 — five children added: James Daniel, William Jr., Iona Belle, John Wesley, Robert Anthony.
25 Sep 2026 — death index entry added (S557).
24 Sep 2026 — 1940 Amarillo directory added (S373).
22 Sep 2026 — his birth date and parents, first taken from Find a Grave (S22), put on the 1858 Owsley County birth register (S160); the same wording taken out of the line page on 12 Oct 2026.
22 Sep 2026 — S157 was read again from the image at full resolution; what the re-read found is in the standing note of each source in the sources list, and the dated “supplement” label was taken off those notes on 12 Oct 2026.

Family

Parents1870
🔑 His parents are named on his own birth row, in words. The same register gives father Jas. Bowles and Maiden name of Mother: Lydia Williams S160
the first documentary statement of the parent–child link anywhere in this research. Find a Grave names the same parents, James Daniel Bowles and Lydia Williams S22, and the 1870 Owsley household has a son William, 12, of exactly the right age S157. ⚠ Ancestry's index of that register carries no date at all; the date exists only on the image.
Children1882
His son James Daniel Bowles Probable confirm or correct →, born 23 January 1882 at Cass, Arkansas, died 20 November 1941 at Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana; his wife was Bessie Alice. He married her as Alice Bagby at Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri, on 12 June 1912, by the licence, read from the image S938; in 1925 he was a clergyman living in the parsonage at Abilene, Kansas, with his wife Bessie A. and two sons S939. The Indiana death index names his parents as Wm A. Bowles and “Ioma” S890, and his Find a Grave memorial agrees S891; he is in Atwood, Kansas in 1930 S892 and Crown Point, Indiana in 1940 S893. He is the eldest son in the 1900 household S140: read at full resolution, the line gives James D., born probably January 1882 in Arkansas. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: the death certificate is read from its index only, not the image, and the link to his parents rests on that index and Find a Grave.
Children1920
His son James Daniel Bowles was a merchant with a music store at 302 North 5th Street, Rogers, Arkansas, in 1920, aged 37, with his wife Bessie A. and two sons Confirmed S1026
Children1893
His son William Anderson Bowles Jr. Probable confirm or correct →, born 28 April 1893 at Elmdale, Taylor County, Texas, died 15 September 1957 at Pasadena, California, and buried at Rose Hills, by his Find a Grave memorial S899; the Social Security claims index names his wife as Evelyn J. Smith S900, and he is traced in the 1930, 1940 and 1950 censuses S901S902S903. He fits the William A., born April 1893 in Texas, of the 1900 household S140, and is probably the private William A. Bowles whose mother was “Bell Bowles” of Abilene in 1918 S773. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: no California marriage or death certificate has been read; his death date and burial come from Find a Grave alone. His birth date is on two draft registrations of his own, in the lines below; they give Abilene where the memorial gives Elmdale.
Children1917
His son William Anderson Bowles Jr. had registered for the First World War draft on 5 June 1917 in Precinct 9, Taylor County: aged 24, of Route 2, Abilene, born 28 April 1893 at Abilene, a farmer, single Confirmed S1082. The date agrees with his 1942 card.
Children1942
His son William Anderson Bowles Jr. signed his own 1942 draft card at 4706 Klamath Street, Los Angeles, giving his birth as 28 April 1893, Abilene, Texas Confirmed S1022. This puts the birth date on a record in his own hand; Abilene is the Taylor County seat
Parents1920
William Jr. is probably the “Bales, William A”, 26, single, a farmer born in Texas to parents born in Kentucky, in Belvidere Township, Los Angeles County, in 1920 Probable confirm or correct → S1023. Evidence: his age, his birthplace and both parents’ birthplaces fit. Weak: the surname is spelled Bales. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Children1932
His son William A. Bowles Jr. and Evelyn J. were living at 4838 South Huntington Drive, Los Angeles, in 1932, where he was a clothes cleaner Confirmed S1119. That address falls between the ones in his 1930 and 1940 censuses.
Children1895
His daughter Iona Belle Bowles Noonan Probable confirm or correct →, born 18 January 1895, died 10 September 1986, wife of Charles Francis Noonan; her Find a Grave memorial names the same parents S905. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. The Iona B. Reah, 55, of Hermosa Beach in 1950, living with her sister Jean Julius S637, is this daughter: a 1936 directory lists her at Hermosa Beach as Iona B., wife of Glanton Reah, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce S940. What is weak: the Noonan marriage rests on Find a Grave alone, and whether Mrs Reah later became Mrs Noonan has not been checked; her dates are also in two indexes, in the next line.
Children1902
His son John Wesley Bowles Confirmed, born 26 June 1902 at Potosi, Taylor County, died 6 December 1960 at Abilene; his Texas death certificate names his father as W. A. Bowles and his mother as “Belle Broach” S904. His own 1942 draft card, read from the image, gives the same birth date, 26 June 1902; it says Abilene, the county seat beside Potosi S934. He married Ethel Maude NeSmith, as a daughter's Texas birth certificate names her S936. In 1940 his household is on the same census sheet as his brother Alfred's family S935, and in 1950 he is the John W. Bowles, 47, farming next door to Alfred S743. The same birth date is given for his brother Thomas L. Bowles, and John Wesley's obituary names “a twin brother, Tom” S1569. Research status: CONFIRMED as his son: two censuses read from the images list him by name as a son in this household S186S188, and his obituary names his brothers and sisters as the children of W. A. Bowles and Iona Brock S1569.
Children1904
His son Robert Anthony Bowles Probable confirm or correct →, born 3 April 1904 at Potosi, Taylor County, died 27 February 1974 at Phoenix, Arizona; his wife was Geneva Annie Reynolds, as a daughter's 1932 Texas birth certificate names her S937. The Social Security death index gives 3 April 1904 and February 1974 S894; his Find a Grave memorial names his parents as William Anderson and Iona Belle S895. He registered for the draft S896 and lived in Amarillo in 1940 and 1950 S897S898, two doors from his brother Warren Debs S507. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: his Arizona death certificate has not been read, and the draft card gives 4 April.
Children1930
His son Robert Anthony Bowles was single in April 1930, a roomer on Pierce Street in Amarillo and a presser in a dry-cleaning plant Confirmed S1027, so he married Geneva Reynolds between 1930 and 1932

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Iona’s dates are also in two indexes: the Texas death index and the Social Security Death Index have Iona Belle Noonan, born 18 January 1895 at Abilene, died 10 September 1986 in Potter County, Texas S1687. Both are index only, and which of the two gives each place was not checked. What is weak or missing: neither index names her parents, so that she is this couple’s daughter still rests on the memorial S905 and the Reah records above; a 1974 newspaper notice said to name “Iona Noonan” as a sister of Robert Anthony Bowles has not been read for this card. Her parentage stays probable. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A daughter Frances, Mrs. Fathergail by 1947, has a card of her own: Frances Bowles. Evidence: two entries in an index of newspaper obituaries, one for her mother’s 1947 obituary and one for her brother S. A. Bowles’s in 1964 S1663. What is weak: neither clipping was read for her name, and no record of her own has been read
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Another daughter: Sudie Beth Bowles (18 May 1898 – April 1986), who married Vernon E. Hancock and lived at Amarillo. Evidence: her mother Iona’s 1947 obituary names a daughter Sudie Beth Hancock of Amarillo S1547; the family typescript has “Sudie Beth (Bowles) Hancock b. May 18, 1898” S72; the Social Security Death Index has Sudie Hancock, born the same day, last residence Amarillo, died April 1986 S1548; the 1930 Amarillo census has Vernon E. Hancock, 30, a dry-cleaning proprietor, with his wife Sudie B., 30, and Robert A. Bowles as their roomer S1027; Mrs. V. E. Hancock was the informant on the 1933 death certificate of Lillie (Bowles) Blackburn’s infant son S1549; and V. E. Hancock is the “brother-in-law” on Warren Debs Bowles’s 1940 draft card S505. Weak: no record read so far names her parents; her 1986 death certificate, or her marriage record (Potter County, about 1919), would settle it. Her name is also in question: a Find a Grave index entry for an “Ida Joanna Hancock” (1898–1986) may be the same woman; the family records read say Sudie Beth, so that name is used here. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A daughter Martha Ellen, Mrs. Richardson, born 25 September 1896 in Texas, died 22 March 1980 in Orange County, California. Evidence: the California death index lists Martha Ellen Richardson, also Bowles, with those dates, her mother’s maiden name as Brock and her father’s surname as Bowles S1644; the family typescript gives the same birth date, and her mother’s 1947 obituary names a daughter Martha Richardson of Los Angeles S1632. What is weak: only the index was read, and it gives her parents’ surnames, not their given names; her husband’s given name and their marriage are not found. A Taylor County marriage record or her death certificate would settle it. She has a card of her own: Martha Ellen Bowles. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.

Life

Birth1865
Born 31 December 1865, London, Laurel County, Kentucky S170 S23
Death1947
Died 4 July 1947, Potosi, Taylor County, Texas, aged 81 years 6 months 3 days; buried Potosi, 6 July 1947 S170 S23
Cause
Cause of death coronary thrombosis; widowed; occupation housewife S170
Death1947
🔑 Her own Texas standard certificate of death, no. 31724, filed at Abilene on 11 July 1947 by the local registrar — seven days after the death — has been read at full resolution S170. Four facts move off Find a Grave onto it: the birth date, the birthplace, the death date and the burial, all of which stood on a memorial alone S23. S170 is cited ahead of S23 for all four. And her parentage is stated in words for the first time — field 10 names her father, field 12 her mother's maiden name — corroborating the 1865 Harlan County marriage register's Matildia Howard S151. ⚠ The caveat travels with it: the informant, Iona Reah of Hermosa Beach, California, named for the deceased and almost certainly a daughter, was reporting her own grandparents. Second-hand, far better than a compiled memorial, and not primary. 🔑 London is the seat of Laurel County — the county the 1860 census puts her father's family in S167. The tree had the place from a memorial; it now has a reason. 🔑 She is on the 1870 and 1880 schedules too: Iona B., 4, in Valley Township, Madison County, Arkansas in July 1870 S153 — a reading her 1880 age of 14 settles against three earlier alternatives — and Iona B., 14, eldest of six in her mother's household at Hilburn Township in June 1880 S166.
Census1910
In 1910 she was the mother of 18 children born, 15 living S186. Widowed, she was living in 1940 with her daughter L. Jean Julius at 912 Buchanan, Amarillo S185.
Census1940
The 1940 Amarillo directory lists her as “Bowles Iona B (wid W A)” at 912 Buchanan, the address of the 1940 census S373.
Census1950
The 1950 census of Hermosa Beach lists Iona B. Reah, 55, born Texas, as the head of a household that included her sister Jean Julius S637, so the informant Iona Reah was Iona's daughter.
Military1918
A World War I transport list for Co. D, 111th Ammunition Train, 36th Division, has Bowles, William A., private first class, no. 1480433, whose person to notify is “Bell Bowles, mother, R.R. #2, Abilene, Texas” S773 Probable confirm or correct →. It puts the family on a rural route out of Abilene in 1918 and points to a son William A. who served in the war. What is weak: no other record read so far names this son.
Census1934
In 1934 Mrs Iona B. Reah was registered to vote at 1524 Monterey Boulevard, Hermosa Beach, sixteen years before the 1950 census finds her in the same town S1299
Death1947
Her obituary, on the front page of the Abilene Reporter-News of 5 July 1947, says Mrs. Iona Belle Bowles, 81, of Amarillo, died on Friday at 12:45 p.m. at the home of her son John W. Bowles near Potosi, as the family gathered for a three-day reunion in her honour S1632. It gives her birth as 31 December 1865 near London, Kentucky, says she was married on 24 December 1880 at Taft, Arkansas, and that she moved to Taylor County in 1892. The funeral was at the Potosi Baptist church on Sunday 6 July, with burial in Potosi Cemetery. It names nine daughters and six sons, among them John, Tony and William Bowles; one brother, John Brock, Louisiana; and three sisters, Ada Estes of Abilene, Mary Stansburry of Wichita Falls and Ida Stansburry of Los Angeles; 53 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. The place of the marriage rests on this obituary alone, printed 67 years after the wedding; no marriage record has been read. “Mary Stansburry” is a lead only: no marriage record gives her sister Mary that name. Read from the newspaper text, not the page image.
Record1910
The family tree’s notes for her now name the two censuses that show the children at home: 1910 S186 and 1920 S188, both of Justice Precinct 7, Taylor County Confirmed. The tree notes were written from the index on 11 October 2026; the two pages were read from the images for this record on 22 September 2026.
Death1947
Confirmed Her sister Ida C. Brock, the “Ida Stansburry of Los Angeles” of the 1947 obituary, was born on 8 April 1873 in Arkansas and died on 23 April 1956 in Lassen County, California. The California Death Index gives those dates under the name Ida C. Stansbury and gives her mother’s maiden name as Howard, which is Matilda Pauline Howard; it is an index, and no image exists for it. She married first John Bance (Taylor County, 22 December 1892) and second A. B. Stansbury; neither marriage record has been read, so the marriages are probable only. She was added to the family tree on 10 October 2026 as a daughter of Solomon Alfred Brock and Matilda Pauline Howard; her own card is Ida C. Brock

History of this card. The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 28 Sep 2026 (1 note), 10 Oct 2026 (2 notes), 11 Oct 2026 (2 notes). The marks and their dates were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed.
22 Sep 2026
her Texas death certificate no. 31724 was read at full resolution (S170); the birth date, birthplace, death date and burial, until then cited to a Find a Grave memorial alone (S23), have been cited to the certificate first since that day. The date label was taken off the note on 12 Oct 2026.
22 Sep 2026 — S151, S153 were read again from the image at full resolution; what the re-read found is in the standing note of each source in the sources list, and the dated “supplement” label was taken off those notes on 12 Oct 2026. 13 Oct 2026 — 3 notes on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; they were added on: 24 Sep 2026 (1 note), 26 Sep 2026 (2 notes). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed.

Details are on William Anderson Bowles's card. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: the death certificates are read from their indexes only, and two of the five rest mainly on Find a Grave.

Probable confirm or correct → In 1940 her daughter Iona B. Reah, 45, born Texas, was a public nurse, living in her own home at 805 19th Street, Hermosa Beach, with her husband Glanton Reah, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce; they had been in the house in 1935. Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Another daughter: Sudie Beth Bowles (18 May 1898 – April 1986), who married Vernon E. Hancock and lived at Amarillo. May 18, 1898” S72; the Social Security Death Index has Sudie Hancock, born the same day, last residence Amarillo, died April 1986 S1548; the 1930 Amarillo census has Vernon E. Know more? Life

Death1886
He is the father of James Harris Timberman Jr., and the two men are easy to confuse: the son is 1886–1919 and died in Ohio; this man is 1858–1919 and died in Pennsylvania. They died four months apart in the same year. The son's 1919 Ohio death certificate names him as "J. H. Timberman Sr", born New Jersey, which is what ties the two records to each other S79
Birth1858
Born June 1858 Confirmed
and settled across three independent sources. The tree carried 4 January 1858 and was wrong. His 1919 Pennsylvania death certificate writes line 6 out in words — June / Fourth / 1858 — and its age-at-death field, 60 yrs 11 mos 30 ds against a death of 3 June 1919, agrees with itself S93. The 1900 census of Wilkes-Barre, taken nineteen years earlier while he was alive, records him as born June 1858 and gives age 41 at the 1 June 1900 census date — right for the fourth of June, and wrong for the fourth of January S139. The 1860 census has him at 2 years old at Salem, New Jersey, which agrees again S94
Work1900
A Veterinary Surgeon Confirmed
and the trade is recorded twice, nineteen years apart: on the 1900 census as his occupation at 41 S139, and again on line 8a of the 1919 death certificate S93. ⚠️ On both records the occupation exists only in the image — Ancestry's transcription of neither carries it. It is the clearest thing this line has to show for reading pages at full resolution instead of trusting an index
Census1884
In the 1884 Wilkes-Barre directory, aged about 26, he was a veterinary surgeon with office and home at 96 Public Square, and advertised as “Dr. J. H. Timberman … Member of Penn'a College of Veterinary Surgeons” S375
sixteen years before the 1900 census.
Death1858
His obituaries say he was born at Alloway on 4 June 1858, came to Wilkes-Barre in 1883, and married Louise E. Harbauer in 1885; they name three sons, James H. Jr., George W. “of Gary, W. Va.” and Albert N. “of this city”, a lieutenant of field artillery just home from Germany S1649. George and Albert are now entered in the family tree as his sons and have cards of their own: George W. Timberman and Albert N. Timberman. What is weak or missing: the newspapers were read as machine-read text, not from the page; no marriage record has been read, so 1885 rests on the obituary and an index line; and nothing later is known of George or Albert. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.
Record2026
History of this card. The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 10 Oct 2026 (1 note). The marks and their dates were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed. 13 Oct 2026
3 notes on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; they were added on: 24 Sep 2026 (2 notes), 25 Sep 2026 (1 note). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed.
Census1860
The 1860 census puts the whole household at Salem, Salem County, New Jersey: John Timberman 34, Rebecca A. 37, James H. 2, Esther A. 14 and John H. 7/12 S94. ⚠️ That places the family at Salem in 1860; it is not itself a statement of where the two-year-old was born. New Jersey is confirmed by the 1900 census's nativity column and by the son's Ohio certificate; Salem County is the household's place, and the stronger of the two claims
Death1870
Louise first appears at seven in Philadelphia in 1870 S175, and in 1880 at 17 in the house of her widowed mother Eva Harbauer, 149 Noble Street S176. A Jas Timberman, 22, boarded in the next house, 151 Noble Street
his age, and identified by name and age only.
Census1900
In 1900 the directory lists him as a veterinarian, business and house at 8 E. Union, Wilkes-Barre S178; by 1910 the family lived at 293 North Main Street, where the census gives his trade as doctor in general practice S177.
Death1919
He died 3 June 1919 at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, one day before his sixty-first birthday, of carcinoma of the prostate of a year's duration, at 60 South Washington Street. He was buried at Mt. Greenwood Cemetery on 5 June 1919; the undertaker was W. E. Doran & Sons and the return was filed on the 4th
certificate 69731, registered 642, district 667 S93
Two small things on the certificate are deliberately not turned into facts. The informant is a W. Timberman of West Virginia — the surname is legible at full resolution, the given initials are not, and they have not been expanded into a guess. And Ancestry indexes the entire 1900 household as "Limberman"; the enumerator's looped capital is a T, so that is a transcription artefact and not a name variant to be recorded. What is still open above him is his father: John H. Timberman's own parents are not found, and he is absent from the 1850 New Jersey census index across 194 Timberman results. The New Jersey Births and Christenings Index (1660–1931) is the next place to look, and it would also be the only document that could put a second, independent source behind 4 June.

Family

Parents1858
The day, 4 June, is now settled. The Upper Alloways Creek township return of births, made on 15 July 1858, gives June 4 1858 at Allowaystown and names his parents John Timberman & Rebecca, his father a carpenter S374.
Siblings1864
His sister Rebecca Timberman Harbauer (1864–1944) married Henry C. Harbauer; her death certificate names the same parents, John Timberman and Rebecca Harris S579. So a Timberman brother and sister both married Harbauers. That Henry C. was Louise Emma's brother is not yet proven.
Parents1826
His parents are confirmed by his own death certificate: father John H. Timberman (b.~1826), mother Rebecca Anna Harris (birth year not settled; about 1829 by her age at death) S93 Confirmed. His middle name Harris is his mother's maiden name, carried forward
and then given to his son as well, which is why three generations answer to the same three words
Marriage1863
He married Louise Emma Harbauer
on the site's older reading of the dates she is simply "1863–1934"; the 1900 census fills her in. She was born June 1863 in Pennsylvania of two German-born parents, and the same sheet records three children born, three living S139
Children1870
At twelve, in 1870, he worked in a cotton mill at Gloucester City, New Jersey S189. By 1914 he practised as Timberman & Church, veterinary surgeons, rear 15 N Main S190; his son Albert N. named him next of kin in 1916 at 60 S. Washington St. S200.
Marriage1886
The marriage is dated to about 1886, and the derivation is worth stating plainly: the 1900 schedule records them as married 14 years, which counts back to 1886 S139. ⚠️ No marriage record has been retrieved, and a years-married column is a round number given to an enumerator, not a register entry. It is corroborated from an unusual direction
their eldest son was born October 1886 — which brackets the wedding tightly but also means the census figure and the son's birth are describing one and the same year with no room to spare
Children1900
The 1900 household is the only place all three sons appear together: James H., Oct 1886, at school at 13; George W., Feb 1892; and Albert, Aug 1893 S139. They are at house 8, dwelling 38, family 44, Ward 5, 2nd Division, enumerated 1 June 1900 by John Shadrach. All three now have pages of their own here: George W. Timberman and Albert N. Timberman are named as his sons in his 1919 obituary S1649 and are not yet traced further

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A Philadelphia marriage index records the marriage of Louise E. Harbauer in Philadelphia in 1885, a year earlier than the about-1886 counted back from the 1900 census. Weak: an index line only; the licence image would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1455
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: an undated Franklinville Methodist Episcopal class list has a Jas. H. Timberman (Ancestry record 507833), with no age or kin; it could be him, his son James Jr., or another man, so it is not attached to either. What would settle it: a dated class entry, or a census placing him at Franklinville.

Life

Birth1844
Born 26 January 1844, Tennessee
her own death certificate S208, and the same day is cut on her headstone S86
Death1915
Died 14 April 1915, 10th Civil District, three miles east of Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee; buried Gallatin Cemetery 16 April S208. ⚠️ The headstone reads the day as APR. 4 S86; the certificate, written at the time, is followed.
Death1915
Her obituary in the Nashville Banner of 16 April 1915 says that Mrs. Nannie Martin, wife of the late Joe D. Martin, died of apoplexy on Wednesday at her home near Gallatin on the Scottsville road; that she was the daughter of the late David Chenault, a prominent citizen of this county; that she was 71, born and reared in Sumner County; and that two sons and five daughters survived her Confirmed S1653. Wednesday was 14 April, the day on her death certificate, and the age, the place and the husband fit as well. This is the first record to give her father’s name in full, and with the 1850 and 1860 censuses, where she is in his house, it makes David Chenault Confirmed as her father. The obituary does not name her mother, so Louisa Quisenberry stays Probable. What is weak: the obituary was read as machine-read text, not from the page image. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.
Census1930
The Chenault name appears as a boarder in Nancy's 1930 household
"Chenault, Ermin, 28", a woman boarder, a saleslady in dry goods — corroborating the family connection S27
Census1910
In 1910, aged 66, still on her own farm with her daughter Emma and her sister-in-law Martha Gillispie, 75 S378.

Life

Birth1844
Born 15 April 1844 at Kirchberg an der Jagst, Oberamt Gerabronn, Württemberg
the register writes the place Gerabronn, Kirchberg u. Oa., and his siblings' entries read Kirchberg (OA. Gerabronn) — and baptised Carl Julius Prüger at that Lutheran parish on 28 April — the Württemberg church book S69, matched to the exact birth date on his Pennsylvania death certificate S68
Death1924
Died 6 January 1924, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, aged 79; buried Smithfield East End Cemetery, Pittsburgh S19
Arrival1874
He was naturalized in 1874, at Pittsburgh
his own 1920 census line reads immigrated 1865, Na 1874, and his son's sworn 1919 passport application gives the same year and says the certificate was presented S179S180. The certificate is still unlocated; the passport file's own pointer is passport no. 50070 of 16 June 1917.
Census1920
In January 1920, widowed, he owned 711 N. St. Clair Street, Pittsburgh, with his daughter Gertrude and her husband Godfrey Murfin S179; Gertrude was still in the house when she died in 1956 and was buried at Smithfield S181. A son, Julius Jr, born Pittsburgh 29 July 1867, married Ida Waggoner S180.
Census1900
The year of his marriage is not settled. The 1900 census, which gives 32 years married, points to about 1868 S137; the 1910 census, which gives 44 years married, points to about 1866 S182. Their son Julius Jr was born at Pittsburgh on 29 July 1867 S180.
Census1880
In June 1880 he was a machinist on Virginia Street, Pittsburgh Ward 32, with Mena and four children: Julius 12, George 8, Frederick 6 and Mena 2 S183.
Census1884
The Pittsburgh directory of 1884 lists him as a pattern maker on Virginia Avenue near Bertha, and on the next line his son Julius H., a clerk, on Virginia in the 32nd Ward S1766. In 1900, at Greensburg, the census gives his occupation as molder S137.
The crossing is on record. The Hamburg emigrant list shows Julius sailing on 14 October 1865 aboard the HAPAG steamer Saxonia, in steerage, aged 21, giving his home as Kirchberg, Württemberg, and his trade as Gießer; the arrival at New York on 1 November 1865 is the entry "PROEGER, JULS., from Germany, age 21, laborer" in the arrival index S2. The line page grades the crossing Confirmed; it cites no S-number for the Hamburg list itself.
Six United States glass patents, 1876–1919, all his — a pattern maker and molder, never his clerk son (the attribution argument):
  • US D8,942, 1 February 1876 — Design for a bird relish dish
  • US D20,079, 1890 — Design for glass vessels
  • US D21,113, 13 October 1891 — Ornamentation of glassware
  • US D21,181, 24 November 1891 — Design for tableware — "Pioneer's Victoria"
  • US 580,716, 13 April 1897 — Hollow glassware
  • US 1,320,091, 28 October 1919 — Sheet glass

the death certificate says the father is unknown, so this name exists on the register alone — and his mother, written there as Elisabeth Catharina, née Lösch. That given name is a slip of the pastor's pen: her own baptism (1803), marriage (1835) and burial (1872), each read from the register image, call her Elisabetha Sabina S1688S1689S133; the 1924 death certificate says Lossetta. The surname Lösch is the same on every record S69S68S122

Life

Birth1847
Born 3 November 1847, Germany S137S124
Death1912
Died 9 April 1912, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, aged 63; buried Smithfield East End Cemetery S19
Death1912
The Pittsburgh papers of 10–12 April 1912 carry her death notice and two short obituaries. She died at 12:50 a.m. on Tuesday 9 April 1912 at her home, 707 North St. Clair Street, East End; the notice names her as Minnie Kochendorfer, wife of Julius Proeger. She had lived in Pittsburgh for over 40 years, apart from a short time in Greensburg, and belonged to the German Evangelical church. She left her husband, four sons, Julius, Jr., Fred, William and Walter; three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Benjes of Baltimore, Caroline and Gertrude; and nine grandchildren Confirmed S1654. The notice asks the Greensburg and Uniontown papers to copy it; her son Julius Herman married as Julius Proeger Jr, of Uniontown. A daughter Minnie, Mrs. Benjes of Baltimore, is new to this record: she is probable; besides these obituaries only census and marriage index entries have been read for her, and no birth or death record. She now has a card of her own: Minnie Proeger Benjes. What is weak: the papers were read as machine-read text, not from the page images; they print her age as 65, where her baptism makes her 64; and Gotleib is not among the sons named. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.
Census1910
In April 1910 — her last census
she is Wilhelmina S. Proeger, 63, married 44 years, at 707 N. St. Clair Street, Pittsburgh, with Walter, Gertrude and Caroline S182. The enumerator wrote her husband as Louis G.; the household is Julius's.
Birth1847
Baptised "Sibÿlla Mina" at Langenburg, born 3 November 1847, daughter of Georg Leonhard Kochendörfer, cooper, and Eva Margaretha Renk S184.
Arrival1839
Three of Minnie's brothers went to America before her: Johann Carl, born 21 March 1839 at Langenburg, applied to emigrate in October 1858 Probable confirm or correct →; Friedrich, born 25 December 1842, a shoemaker, and Heinrich Hermann, born 14 May 1845, a bookbinder, sailed together on the Humboldt from Hamburg to New York on 23 June 1864 S611. Heinrich Hermann's baptism names Georg Leonhard and Eva Margaretha as his parents and sits on the same family-register folio as Minnie's S612; Johann Carl's baptism, read from the register image, names the same parents: he was born 21 March 1839 and baptised at Langenburg on 27 March 1839 S729. His 1858 emigration application and Friedrich rest on index rows only. Minnie's own crossing has not been found

Her parish is named for the first time: Langenburg. The FamilySearch shared tree christens her there on 21 November 1847, in the Oberamt Gerabronn, Württemberg
eight kilometres from Kirchberg an der Jagst, where her husband was baptised three years earlier S69S124. Two families out of one small district who marry in Pittsburgh is chain migration, not coincidence. Confirmed — the Langenburg register entry itself has now been read S184. An earlier note here rested on an index entry placing a Proeger family at Künzelsau; the Württemberg baptism supersedes that guess.
Parents2026
Her parents, Confirmed on 25 September 2026 from her baptism register and their 1837 marriage register S444: Georg Leonhard Kochendörfer (1811 – 1 October 1859, died at Langenburg) ⚭ Eva Margaretha Renk (b. 1809), married 29 November 1837 at Gerabronn, with six further children S124
Marriage1900
The marriage was made in America. On the 1900 census both spouses report immigration in 1867, 33 years in the United States and 32 years married
so they crossed first and married on this side of the ocean, about 1868 on this reading; the 1910 census (44 years married) points to about 1866 S182. The same row records ten children born, seven living as of 1 June 1900; that column exists only on a wife's line, which is why her husband's record never carried it S137.

Open questions

Open question
⚠️ She was born in 1847, not the 1848 on her cemetery memorial S19. Three things stand against 1848: the 1900 census S137 writes Nov 1847 and gives her age as 52 at 1 June 1900, which is consistent only with 1847
a November 1848 birth would read 51; her 1912 Pennsylvania death certificate gives 3 November 1847 independently, twelve years later; and her christening on 21 November 1847 S124 cannot precede her birth. The memorial's 1848 is the outlier.
Not found
Her own crossing is still Not found. Langenburg makes the Württemberg registers, rather than the Hamburg passenger lists, the next place to look.

Life

Birth1854
Born November 1854, West Virginia S90S92
Census1900
In 1900 his wife Rose A., born November 1854 in West Virginia, had borne 13 children, 7 then living S92. Their son Harry, born 1889 at Bellaire, was in 1940 a glass-company laborer at Lansing, Belmont County, Ohio, with his wife Amelia and their daughters S352.
Birth1860
A likely childhood household: in 1860 H. S. L. Roberts, 5, born Ohio, was in a Roberts household at Martinsville (Martins Ferry), Belmont County, Ohio Probable confirm or correct → S1049. Evidence: the initials and age fit a November 1854 birth, and the family is just across the river from Wheeling. Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In the 1870 census he was probably the Henry Roberts, 15, a laborer born in Ohio, in the household of Henry Roberts, 42, a laborer, and Harriet, 42, both born in Ohio, at Martins Ferry, Pease Township, Belmont County. Weak: the census states no relationships and the name is common; no parents are published here. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1504
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A daughter who died as a baby: Mary Roberts, born about February 1879, died of measles at Wheeling in April 1880, aged 14 months, was probably a child of Henry and Rose A. Williams. Evidence: two Wheeling death registers, both read from the images, name her parents as “Hy & Rose” and “Henry + Rose”; a birth early in 1879 comes before their known children; and the 1900 census says Rose had borne thirteen children, of whom six had died S92. One register dates the death 14 April and the other 11 April, at Alley 14 in the 4th Ward; the archive’s index reads the mother in the second as “Ann”, where the image reads “Rose” S1556. Weak: neither register gives the mother’s maiden name, both first names are common, and the couple’s known children were born at Bellaire, Ohio, not Wheeling; no birth record for Mary has been found. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Probable confirm or correct → Two daughters named in 1919: Florence E. Roberts, Mrs. Zane, born February 1883, and Henrietta “Etta” Roberts, Mrs. James C. Zane, aged 37, of 921 Market street”, his own address S1648. Florence is Confirmed: the paper gives her name and she is in the 1910 household. Henrietta is Probable. What is weak: the paper gives only her married name; that Mrs. Kyle is the Etta of the 1900 household rests on two census readings, and no marriage or death record has been found for either daughter. The newspaper was read as machine-read text, not from the page. They now have cards of their own: Florence E. Roberts and Henrietta Roberts. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.

Probable
Probably her family in 1870: at Bellaire, Ohio, Rosa A. Williams, 15, was at home with Mary A. Williams, 52, who kept boarders, and Angeline, 23 Probable confirm or correct → S1153. The evidence is her name, her age (15 fits the November 1854 birth in the 1900 census S92) and Bellaire, where her sons were later born S1043. What is weak: the 1870 census states no relationships, it gives her birthplace as Ohio, not West Virginia, and her father, foreign-born, is not in the house. Mary A. and Angeline match her 1870 Bellaire household. Weak: no relationships are stated, and John is born in Ohio where 1870 gives her a foreign-born father. Know more? Why this couple is the anchor of the whole paternal line

Confirmed by government record

Not a user tree — the Social Security NUMIDENT file

  • NUMIDENT names "JULIUS H PROEGER" and "WILAMENA K KOCHENDOERFE" as the parents of Fred Albert Proeger, born 24 November 1873 in Pittsburgh S13
  • NUMIDENT names "JULIUS PROEGER" and "MINA L KOCHENDOERFE" as the parents of Luis Walter Proeger, born 10 January 1881 in Pittsburgh S13
  • Both are brothers of William Leonard Proeger (1876). That William Leonard himself is Julius's son is now Confirmed, and by a government record rather than by the weight of three weaker ones: his own California death record names his father as Julius Proeger S44. It was Probable (strong) confirm or correct → here until 13 September 2026 — FindAGrave and FamilySearch both placed him in the sibling group S14S12, his NUMIDENT record gave his birthplace as Pittsburgh in exactly the right years S13, and FamilySearch recorded the family in Pittsburgh in 1880, but his own SS-5 parent fields were never published in the readable index. The death record supplies what the SS-5 would not.
  • Known siblings, all Probable confirm or correct →: Julius (1867), George (1872), Frederick Albert (1873–1947), Louisa Wilhmina "Mina" (1878–1934), Luis Walter (1881), Gotleib (1882), Gertrude (1884–1956), Caroline Katherine (1888–1958) S12S19

Antone Rose & Louise Rose

Confirmed

Portuguese immigrants · the maternal half of Aileane's grandparents

  • Antone Rose — born February 1840, Portugal; arrived 1870; married 1879 S315; died between April 1910 and January 1920 S314; Head of household at Washington Township, Alameda County in 1900, with his own father and mother both recorded as Portugal-born S55
  • Louise Rose — born about 1856, Portugal; listed as Wife, age 44, on the same page S55. Her maiden name is Mendonça Confirmed, in five records, first indexed as da G. de Mendonça in 1879 S315. Alive in January 1920 as head of her household S314; death not found.
  • Mildred Rose is in that household as "Daughter", born July 1898, bracketed as a twin with her brother Edward — which is what makes these two Aileane's great-grandparents rather than same-surname strangers S55
  • They lived in the same township as the Silvas. Both of Aileane's parental lines are Portuguese immigrants who landed in the same few square miles of Alameda County, a generation apart.
  • ⚠️ Their records say "Portugal", not "Azores" — and they are not upgraded to match the Silvas. "Rose" is the standard Anglicisation of Portuguese Rosa / Roza, so Azorean Roses in Alameda County are numerous; two candidates whose records do say "Azores Islands" were found and deliberately not attached — one is buried at Livermore, the other was born in 1869, thirty years off.

The Azores is Confirmed. So is the island: Faial.

Confirmed

The single most important sentence on this line · answered 15 Sept 2026

  • Confirmed by record: the archipelago. 1900 says "Azores Port", 1940 says "Azores", and the 1900 return adds that Frank Sr's own father and mother were born there too S47S50
  • Confirmed by record: the island — Faial. His November 1946 obituary, datelined Mission San Jose, says it in plain words: "He was a native of Fayal, the Azores" S67. No census or index ever named an island; a newspaper did. The obituary also corroborates every axis the 1896 fraternal-lodge registers rested on — age 83, Mission San José, IDES Council No. 1 and UPEC, wife Anna L., son Frank Jr — so the Francisco da Silva, 33, married, farm labourer, island Fayal, heir Anna da Silva, of UPEC Council No. 10 and IDES Council No. 1 S64S65 is the same man, and the island is no longer an inference.
  • What the DNA carries on its own: Pico and Faial, as a pair, come from Earl's 23andMe regional assignment — they stay DNA evidence S46. The DNA does not choose between the two islands; the obituary does, and the lodge registers agree.
  • And the island cannot be found from the Azorean end. A search of the Azorean Catholic parish registers for a Fran* Silv* born 1862–64 anywhere in the archipelago returns 1,926 results; Silv* born on Pico alone returns 362,786. One of the 1,926 — a Francisco Silveira Marques born June 1863 and christened at Horta, Faial — matches on month, year and one of the two DNA-named islands. It has not been attached, and should not be. It is a coincidence drawn from a pool of two thousand. Matching a birth month inside that much noise is guesswork wearing a citation.
  • What is still open is the parish within Faial. The Horta passport register for 1888 (PASSAPORTES-FAL-1876-1889) is the one route to it: Faial's emigrants left through Horta and the register names age, parish and destination. A lodge beneficiary file — UPEC certificate 2223 or IDES certificate 16362 — is the second-best route. ⚠️ The Santa Barbara death-index entry for a Frank Silva is a different Frank Silva and says nothing about this family’s island; the headstone at St. Joseph's was read and carries no island.

The census households read for Louise’s card show John Fonseca, 28, a packing-house laborer born in Portugal, at South San Francisco in 1910 S1539; an Azorean-born dairy farmer in Holtville Township, Imperial County, in 1920 S1540; and, at 47, a poultry-packing laborer at Rialto, San Bernardino County, in 1930 S1542. The children of those households are on Louise’s card and are not named here

Open questions

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: no record read names Louise’s parents, so the link to this family rests on her name, age and California birth; his birthplace is given only as Portugal or the Azores by the censuses; his parents, his arrival and his death have not been found. Her death record or the 1907 marriage certificate (Book 39, page 314) would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Family

Marriage1882
She married James Robert (Bob) Cutbirth, born on 2 January 1882 in Texas, who died on 28 June 1960 in Callahan County, Texas. This is Probable, and the evidence is strong: a Texas county marriage index lists J. R. Cutbirth and “Olvena” Betcher S1750; the index of his First World War draft card names his contact as “Olvenia”, and his dates rest on that index, the indexes of the 1900 and 1920 censuses and the Texas Deaths index S1755. The date and county of the marriage have not been read. She is the Mrs. Bob Cutbirth whom her sister Pauline’s 1944 obituary names S1718, and a Texas birth index names “Avena” Betcher as the mother of a Cutbirth child S1750. Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Wife of Thomas Johnson, by the index of a Texas county marriage record, which spells her name “Batcher”; the indexes of six Texas death records of their children name Mary Betcher as the mother, and one of them gives his middle initial, E. A Find a Grave memorial for Thomas “Tom” Johnson gives his birth on 25 December 1846 in Norway and his death on 1 March 1915 in Callahan County, and puts his grave at Tecumseh Cemetery; it carries a transcription of a Texas death index entry, with an age that agrees with the two dates and a father given as Ivan Johnson. His dates are Probable: they are memorial text and a second-hand transcription, the index itself has not been opened, and the initial E. is not on the memorial. He is on the Ancestry tree as Thomas E. Johnson and has no card here S1754. Her children are not named here.

Otto Betcher died on 25 June 1974 at Abilene, Taylor County, Texas. He was born in Indiana on 1 September 1876. Both dates are in the index of his Texas death record S1736. Research status: PROBABLE. As a daughter of August Betcher the evidence is strong: the index of her Texas death record names August Betcher as her father S1736, and the 1944 obituary of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz, read as machine text, names her sister Mrs. E. M. Wristen of Baird. As a daughter of Elisabeth Kamiska Betcher it is Probable and weaker: the index of her Social Security claim names her mother as Libbie Engle, not Kamiska S1737, and Elisabeth is given as her mother here because she is the only wife of August Betcher in any record read. Family

Siblings1865
His date of birth conflicts with his sister’s. The index gives his birth as 9 June 1865, ten weeks before Pauline’s on 24 August 1865, so one of the two dates is wrong or they are not full brother and sister. For that reason he is linked to his father alone, and Elisabeth Kamiska Betcher is not given as his mother. The images of his death certificate and of Pauline’s, which has not been found, would settle it.

Family

Parents
Daughter of James Daniel Bowles and Lydia Williams; sister of William Anderson Bowles
Children1888
Her first child, William Lacy Carpenter, was born on 29 July 1888 near Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, ten months after her marriage. His delayed birth certificate names his parents as Robert M. Carpenter and Lucinda Bowles, both born in Kentucky Confirmed S957. It was sworn in 1942 by his aunt, Nannie E. Evans of Wallowa, Oregon. The ages it gives the parents are recollections, and the site keeps her birth in 1870.
Marriage1880
Her husband's family, probably: in 1880 a Robert, 14, born Kentucky, was a farm laborer in the Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas household of William and Ala Carpenter, both born Kentucky, with eleven brothers and sisters Probable confirm or correct → S964. Evidence: his Kentucky birth, his age, the Arkansas home, and a daughter named Ala. What is weak: no record read yet names Robert Marion Carpenter's parents, and the 1880 age runs a year ahead of his November 1866 birth.
Children1921
Her son Harry Charles Carpenter, 21, a soldier of R.F.D. 1, Phoenix, born at Prescott, Arizona, married Florence Ethel Snyder at Oswego, New York, on 11 January 1921. The record names his parents as Robert M. Carpenter and Lucinda Bowles Confirmed S1140. The couple gave their future address as Madison Barracks, an Army post.
Children1912
Her son William Lacy Carpenter married Bessie Chilson on 27 October 1912 at Tempe, Maricopa County, Arizona Confirmed S1684. This is from two indexes of the Arizona marriage records; the record itself has not been read. It agrees with the 1920 newspaper item above, which calls his wife “formerly Miss Bessie Chilson, of Tempe” S1661. A census index gives her birth as May 1892 in Arizona. William and Bessie were entered in the family tree on 11 October 2026; there William is marked a probable son, born July 1888 in Arkansas, because the entry was made from the 1900 and 1910 censuses, while his delayed birth certificate above names both parents S957. Neither has a card of their own yet, their children are not named here, and his death has not been read. Her husband, Robert Marion Carpenter, has no card either; his entry in the tree now names William as his probable son too. Bessie’s parents, John C. Chilson, born November 1866 in California, and Emily J., born March 1874 in Oregon, maiden name unknown, were entered in the tree on 11 October 2026 from the index of the 1900 census of Gila County named in S1684; index only, and neither has a card. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Open questions

Probable
Probably her son: Harry C. Carpenter, private first class in the 242nd Military Police Company, army no. 2311994, named “Mrs Lucinda Carpenter, mother, Phoenix, Arizona” as the person to notify when his company sailed from Liverpool after the First World War Probable confirm or correct → S984. Evidence: the surname, a mother named Lucinda, and Phoenix, where she died in 1920 S158. Weak: the list gives no age or birthplace, and no other record read names him as her son. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A newspaper item about her death. No obituary was found in eleven Phoenix newspaper pages of 28 September to 8 October 1920. The Arizona Republican of 2 October 1920 does say that W. L. Carpenter, of Wickenburg, “was called to Phoenix last Tuesday on account of his mother’s death”, and that his wife was formerly Miss Bessie Chilson, of Tempe S1661. That Tuesday was 28 September, the day Lucinda died, and the initials fit her son William Lacy. What is weak: the item does not name the mother, and the page text was read by machine, not from the page image.

The 1880 census of Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, read from the image, lists John B., 6, son, born Arkansas, in Matilda Brock's household S166; the 1900 Callahan County, Texas, census lists John B., son, born December 1874, a preacher, under S. A. Brock, head, and M. P., wife S138. No birth or death record has been found, and that the Opelousas minister below is this son is inferred from the name, the December 1874 birth, Arkansas and his sister's 1947 obituary; no single record names the Louisiana man with his parents. In 1900 in Opelousas the census, read from the image, lists James Stewart, 48, born Alabama, and his wife Amanda, 42, born Alabama, the mother of two children, both living: Mollie J., daughter, born November 1883 in Louisiana, and Willie, a son S874. Mollie J. fits Jimmie, 36 in 1920 and 47 in 1930. What is weak: Mollie J. and Jimmie are matched only by inference; Amanda's ages disagree (42 in 1900, 70 in 1920); no document read names Jimmie with her parents or gives Amanda's maiden name, and James's middle name and dates are unsourced. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence.

Research status: PROBABLE — entered in the family tree, labelled probable there too; the 1870 census of Travellers Rest, Owsley County, Kentucky (dwelling 224/220) lists Emily, 13, born Kentucky, third in James Bowles's household after James 39 and Lydia 35 S157; the Bowles family-record typescript S72 lists Emily Bowles, married Ed. Hawkins, with a typed birth of 19 January 1851 and death of 12 March 1881 — the 1851 year cannot be right, because her mother was born about 1835, so neither typed date is used

Evidence: The 1870 Owsley County census (Emily, 13, in James Bowles's home), the Bowles family typescript, and her son James Daniel Hawkins's 1967 death certificate naming her as Emily Bowles. Life

Birth1857
Born about 1857, Kentucky; Emily, 4, in the 1860 Travellers Rest household S171; married Ed. Hawkins (typescript)
Census1880
In 1880 she was Emily Hawkins, 24, wife of Edward Hawkins, 40, born Georgia, in Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, with Ellen 6, Harry 4, Allie 3, Elizabeth 3 months, and a stepson William, 16. She gave her mother's birthplace as Tennessee. Matilda Brock's household was in the same township that year S457S166.
Census1870
In 1870, before the marriage, Edward Hawkins was 32 and living alone in Valley Township, Madison County, Arkansas. Next door were William, 7, and Eliza, 4, both born in Alabama; William is the stepson of the 1880 household S703S457.
Census1910
In 1910 Edward Hawkins, 72, widowed, born in Georgia, lived with his son Harvey, 34, a farmer born in Arkansas, and Harvey's sons Edgar, 15, and Evert, 13, in Big Springs Township, Benton County, Arkansas S724. Harvey is the Harry, 4, of the 1880 household S584.
Census1850
Edward Hawkins's parents were probably Nathaniel Hawkins and Charlotte Hawkins Probable confirm or correct →: the 1850 census of District 10, Campbell County, Georgia, read from the image, lists Edward, 11, after Nathaniel Hawkins, 43, a farmer, Charlotte, 43, and Joseph, Syntha C., Permelia A. and Sarah A. Hawkins S881; his age and Georgia birth fit the Edward, 40, of the 1880 household. A Fayette County, Georgia, marriage index has Charlotte Cox marrying Nathan Hawkins on 23 September 1827 S882. What is weak: the 1850 census states no relationships; nothing read ties the boy to Emily's husband beyond name, age and state; the Cox marriage has not been read on the image; and the birth and death dates offered for both parents are unsourced. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence.

Family

Parents
Daughter of James Daniel Bowles and Lydia Williams; eldest sister of William Anderson Bowles and Lucinda Bowles Carpenter
Children1882
Her son James Daniel Hawkins was born on 12 March 1882 in Crawford County, Arkansas, and died on 31 August 1967 at Huntsville. His death certificate names his parents as Edward Hawkins and Emily Bowles S584. That is a second record of the marriage, and she was alive at his birth in March 1882, after the typescript's 1881 death date.
Marriage1861
Edward Hawkins probably had a first wife, Missouri C. Buice: an Edward Hawkins married her in St. Clair County, Alabama, on 5 September 1861 S709 Probable confirm or correct →. It would explain the Alabama-born William, 7, and Eliza, 4, next door to Edward in 1870 S703. What is weak: the licence gives no ages or birthplaces, nothing on it ties this Edward to Arkansas, and the 1880 census calls William a stepson, not a son S457.

Life

Birth1849
Born 1 June 1849, Tennessee; Milton, 11, in his father's household in 1860 S206
Death1917
Died 27 January 1917, Castalian Springs, Sumner County, Tennessee; buried in the Chenault Graveyard S427
Census1870
In 1870, aged 21, still farming in his father's household at Castalian Springs; his mother Louisa held $8,200 of real estate in her own name S397. The Sumner County licence to marry Nannie E. Dunn is dated 26 February, but the year's last digit was never written; 1874 fits his being single in July 1870 S399. In 1880 he farmed next door to his parents with Nannie, born Kentucky, and their children Henry and Mary S398; in 1910, aged 60, he was a general merchant, married 36 years, and Nannie had borne 9 children, all living S400. The 1910 sheet gives Tennessee for Nannie's birthplace and 1880 gives Kentucky; not settled.
Death1849
His death certificate: Milton W. Chenault, farmer, born 1 June 1849 in Tennessee, died 27 January 1917 at Castalian Springs of Bright's disease, and was buried the next day in the Chenault Graveyard. It names his father as D. Chenault of Kentucky and his mother as a Quinsberry of Kentucky. That is a second child's certificate pointing to the Quisenberry family S427.
Census1920
In January 1920 his widow Nannie, 65, born in Kentucky, owned her house in Lebanon, Wilson County, with the sons Henry, 44, and M. W., 34, both travelling salesmen, and Lutie, 26, David, 23, and Virginia, 20 S1332
Death1849
His obituary calls him “the son of the late David Chenault”, born in 1849, “the tenth child of a family of fourteen children”, and says that “on Feb. 26, 1874, he married Miss Nannie Dunn, daughter of the late Woodford Dunn of this county” S1650. That gives the year the marriage licence left unwritten, and it is a second record, apart from his death certificate, that names his father. What is weak: the newspaper was read as machine-read text, not from the page; it does not name his mother; and Woodford Dunn as Nannie’s father rests on this obituary and the 1870 household. His wife Nannie’s probable parents: in August 1870 a Nancy, 16, born Kentucky, was in the household of Woodruff Dunn, 45, farmer, and Mary, 37, in the 2nd Civil District of Sumner County (P.O. Enon College), with brothers Luther and Leo and sisters Eliza, Artemisia and Alice Probable confirm or correct → S1050. Evidence: name, age, Kentucky birth (as in 1880) and the district, four years before the marriage licence. Weak: one census, no relationships stated, and no record yet names her parents. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Children1887
His son Luther Dunn Chenault was born on 10 August 1887 in Tennessee and died in Memphis on 12 July 1950, a retired travelling salesman. His death certificate gives his mother’s maiden name as Nancy Dunn and leaves his father blank Confirmed S1131. He is the Luther D., 24, at home with Milton and Nannie in 1910 S400.

Born 15 July 1851, Tennessee; the Mariah, 8, of her father's household in 1860 S206
Death1933
Died 13 July 1933, Sumner County, Tennessee
Census1910
In 1910, as Mariah Louise Barry, 58 and widowed, she owned her farm free of mortgage in the 2nd Civil District of Sumner County, with her daughters Mamie, 27, and Jessie May, 24; she had borne 5 children, 2 of them living S586.
Death1933
Her death certificate, as Mrs Maria Louise Barry, died 13 July 1933 in the 2nd Civil District of Sumner County, gives her birth as 15 July 1851 in Tennessee and names her father David Chenault and her mother, maiden name Quinesberry, both born in Kentucky Confirmed S961. She was buried in the Barry graveyard.
Census1920
In January 1920 she was still head of her own farm, owned free, in the 2nd Civil District of Sumner County: Mariah Barry, 68, widowed, with her daughter Jessie, 33, and her grandchildren Louise Barry Cecil and Roy Barry Cecil Confirmed S1064.
Census1880
In June 1880 Mariah, 28, was keeping house in the Second District of Sumner County with her husband, entered as B. P. Barry, 33, a farmer, and their sons Albert, 4, and Wallace, 1 Confirmed S1163. In June 1900, widowed and 48, she owned her farm free in the 2nd Civil District, born in July 1852 by that census, mother of five children, two living, with her daughters Jessie May and [Hannie?] Confirmed S1164. Her given name is partly illegible on the 1900 page; Albert and Wallace are not in the house by then.
Death1933
Four death notices in the Nashville papers of 14 July 1933 call her the daughter of David and Louise Chenault, born 15 July 1851 at “Greenfield”, widow of Ben C. Barry and mother of five Confirmed S1640. They are the first record read that gives her mother’s given name; her death certificate gave only the maiden name. She died at her home on the Hartsville pike near Gallatin on Thursday 13 July 1933 at 1 p.m.; the funeral was at the home the next day; she belonged to the old Union congregation of the Church of Christ. Her brothers Billy Chenault of Sweeny, Texas, and Charles C. Chenault survived her, with her daughter Jessie. What is weak: the notices are read from the newspaper text, not the page images, and the grade on her mother’s line above has not been raised. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Her mother: probably Louisa Quisenberry Chenault Probable confirm or correct →, David's only wife seen from 1850 to 1880. In 1870 “Mima L.”, 18, is in David and Louisa Chenault's household at Castalian Springs S397, as Mariah, 8, was in 1860 S206. Life

Birth1858
Born 28 December 1858, Castalian Springs, Tennessee
Death1936
Died 19 March 1936, Castalian Springs, Sumner County, Tennessee; buried Gallatin Cemetery S425
Census1870
In 1870, aged 11, at school in the 3rd Civil District of Sumner County (Castalian Springs post office) S385. He farmed his own land in the First Civil District for the rest of his life: in 1900 with his wife Maudante (entered as Mordalite) and their children Neil, Mildred and Marian S386; in 1910 with a fourth, Eugenia, and his brother William next door S387; in 1920 aged 61 S388; and in 1930 aged 71, first married at 34, with his daughter Eugena Kelly and a granddaughter S389. Each census gives his wife as Mordante or Mordalite.
Census1880
In 1880 he was Charlie Chenault, 21, single, farming in the 1st Civil District of Sumner County S587.
Death1880
The 1880 agriculture schedule for the First District of Sumner County lists him as owner of his farm S654. His wife, entered on her death record as Mordant Chenault, was born 20 February 1873, a daughter of Thomas Bradley and Eugenia Huddleston. She died at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, on 24 June 1935 and was buried at Gallatin S656.
Death1936
His administrators qualified in the Sumner County Court on 6 April 1936, less than three weeks after his death, and filed the final settlement of his estate that December Confirmed S802. Besides the farm's wheat, the accounts show $863 in the bank, a Fidelity Mutual Life policy worth $2,035.65, rent on a restaurant and upstairs room, and a gasoline rental from Pan American Petroleum. His son Neil appears in several entries.
Census1860
In June 1860, aged 2, Charles was at the head of page 49 with his brother Millard F., 4, the last two of the David Chenault household that begins on the previous page Confirmed S1162S206, P.O. Castalian Springs.
Death1936
Two Nashville papers of 20 March 1936 report that he died at home after a heart attack two months before, on the farm where he was “born, reared and spent his life”; the funeral was at the house on Saturday 21 March, and he was a member of the old Union Church of Christ Confirmed S1637. They name three married daughters (Mrs. Howard Hitchcock of Gallatin, Mrs. Roy Byrn of Murfreesboro and Mrs. Dean Hebron of Leland, Mississippi) and his son Neil of Hendersonville; the papers do not say which daughter is which. Mrs. Byrn’s husband is the “R. G. Byrne, Murfreesboro” who signed his death certificate, a son-in-law. The paper gives his age as 75 and his wife as “Maud Braden of Lebanon”; this record keeps 28 December 1858 and Bradley, from the certificate and the marriage return. Read from the newspaper text, not the page image.
Death1936
A second obituary, in the Murfreesboro Daily News-Journal of 20 March 1936, calls him the son of David and Louisa Quisenberry Chenault Confirmed S1641. It gives his age as 77, which fits 1858, his wife as Mordaunt Bradley, who died on 24 June 1935, and his home as “Glenvale”; he died at 3:20 p.m. after a stroke. It names “one brother, William Chenault, Sweeney, Texas”. It does not give his daughters’ given names. Read from the newspaper text, not the page image.

Family

Parents
Marriage1893
Married Maudante Bradley, 15 November 1893, Wilson County, Tennessee S424
Marriage1893
The Wilson County return shows he married Mandante (or Maudante) Bradley on 15 November 1893, the day the licence was issued at Lebanon; the minister was T. B. Larimore; the clerk was Wm. Harkreader S424. His death certificate gives him as Charlie Cornelius Chenault, a widowed farmer, born 28 December 1858, son of David Chenault and Louise Quisenberry, both born in Kentucky. He died at Castalian Springs on 19 March 1936 and was buried in Gallatin Cemetery S425. The middle name Cornelius came from an informant in Murfreesboro and the tree has Coker; both are kept until a second record decides.
Names1891
He is C. C. Chenault, 35, on the 1891 Tennessee list of male voters for Sumner County, District 1 S638. That age points to about 1856, but the 1870 and 1930 censuses support 28 December 1858, which is kept.
Children1921
His three daughters’ married names. Confirmed, from indexes only. The obituaries name the daughters only as Mrs. Roy Byrn of Murfreesboro, Mrs. Dean Hebron of Leland, Mississippi, and Mrs. Howard Hitchcock of Gallatin S1641. A marriage index entry is now found for each: Mildred and Roy G. Byrn, 5 October 1921, Sumner County S1673; Marian and Dean Hebron, 28 July 1926, Sumner County S1680; and Eugenia (then Mrs. Kelly) and William Howard Hitchcock, 15 April 1933, Rutherford County S1674. The 1940 census has each couple, with wives Mildred, 44, Marion, 41, and Eugenie, 38 S1647. Until 11 October 2026 this line was marked probable and took “Hebron” for a misreading of Heaton, the spelling in the 1940 census index; the 1926 marriage entry shows it is the other way round. What is weak or missing: all three marriages were read from indexes, not the registers; the 1940 census was read from the index and gives no wife’s maiden name. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → His wife Maudante as a child: in June 1880 the household of T. E. Bradley, 42, a farmer, and his wife Euginia, 33, in the 17th Civil District of Wilson County, Tennessee, had daughters L. P., 10, M. M., 7, and M. W., 5 S1333. Evidence: her death record names Thomas Bradley and Eugenia Huddleston as her parents. What is weak or missing: the census gives initials only, so which daughter she is is unsettled; her birth in February 1873 fits M. M., 7, better than M. W., 5. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → The brother Billy Chenault of Sweeny, Texas, named in the 1936 obituary is probably the William Chenault who farmed next door in 1910. Evidence: the Tennessean names him as the one surviving brother S1637. Three newspapers now name this brother: the Tennessean here, the Murfreesboro paper of the same day S1641 and the 1933 notices of their sister Maria Louise S1640. Weak: all three are read from newspaper text, and no record yet follows William from Sumner County to Brazoria County, Texas. A Brazoria County census of 1930 or 1940, or his Texas death certificate, would settle it. He now has a card of his own: William Chenault. If you know, use “Add to this record”.

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the death record and the 1900 census were read from the index, not from the images; the timeline places her birth in Clark County from the register, where the index of her death record gives Montgomery County; and her father’s obituary places her in Missouri, where the 1900 census and her death record have her in Montgomery County
not settled. No marriage record has been read. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In Missouri in 1910. The index of the 1910 census has William H. Squires, 52, born in Kentucky, a farmer renting his farm, married 19 years, with his wife Cora, 48, at Kidder, Caldwell County, Missouri S1659. That would explain why her father’s 1914 obituary calls her “of Missouri”. What is weak: the entry was read from the index only, and it does not show Cora’s birthplace.

Life

Birth1831
Born about 1831; died 4 April 1918; buried Gallatin Cemetery S561
Military1942
A 1942 veteran's headstone application for Colby Chenault Sr. gives his death as 4 April 1918 and his burial in Gallatin Cemetery, and his service as a private in Co. G, 9th (Ward's) Tennessee Cavalry, from 1 November 1862 S561. The applicant was a Mrs. D. C. Harper of Gallatin; his wife was Araminta Harper, but the page does not say how they were related. The War Department could not find the unit in its own records, so the service is the family's claim.
Census1860
The 1860 slave schedule for District 2 of Sumner County lists Coleby Chenault as holding one enslaved girl, aged 10. The schedule does not give her name S686.
Census1920
In January 1920 his widow, entered as “Ira M.”, 83, widowed, lived on Dobbins Road in Civil District 9 of Sumner County with their unmarried children John W., 54, who owned the farm, Jewell, 52, and Sallie, 44, a public school teacher Confirmed S1159.
Census1860
The 1860 farm schedule for Sumner County lists Colby Chenault with about 100 acres improved and 92 unimproved, the farm valued at $4,000 Confirmed S1161. The film is faint, the livestock columns cannot be read, and the schedule gives no age or family.

Family

Marriage1854
He married Araminta Harper; their bond was entered in Sumner County on 8 May 1854 S445. They farmed in Sumner County for more than fifty years: District 2 in 1860, with $8,000 in land S446; the 3rd Civil District, near Castalian Springs, in 1870 S447; the 1st District in 1880 with ten children, when he gave both his parents as born in Kentucky S448; and Trousdale County in 1900. The 1900 census gives his birth as May 1831 and says Araminta had borne nine children, all living S449. In 1910 they were on the Coles Ferry Pike, married 55 years, and he was marked “Ca”, a Confederate veteran S450. His unit has not been found yet.
Children1870
His son Jacob Anderson Chenault, a minister, was born in Sumner County on 12 June 1870 and died at Nashville in 1952; the death certificate names his parents as Colby Chenault and Ariminta Harper S549.
Children1862
A daughter, Alice Chenault Bullock, wife of Nathan Bullock, was born at Gallatin on 24 August 1862 and died at Nashville on 3 April 1943. Her death record names her parents as Colby Chenault and Araminta Harper, both born in Sumner County S672.
Parents1850
Araminta Harper's parents: probably Benjamin S. Harper and Nancy Tinsley Probable confirm or correct →. In 1850 “Arminta”, 13, was in Benj. S. Harper's household in District 14 of Sumner County, four years before her marriage S866. Benjamin gave bond to marry Nancy Tinsley on 30 November 1825 S867S868 and married Jane Bell on 9 November 1841 S869, so Nancy was his only known wife when Araminta was born, about 1837. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: the census states no relationships, no record names Araminta's parents, and nothing shows Nancy was still living in 1837. The dates and middle name Find a Grave gives Benjamin are not used.

Research status: PROBABLE — added to this record 24 September 2026; on the family tree, labelled probable there too. He is named in Peter H. Martin's 1849 will S172 in a gift “for the benefit of my children”, but the will does not say “son”; a census household or a guardianship or estate record naming him as a son would confirm it. The will also records his $370 advance and his share in the shoe store
Show detailsHide details

Evidence: Peter H. Martin's 1849 will, a gift “for the benefit of my children”. The 1870 Shreveport census (S1046) has D. B. Martin, 37, a Tennessee-born merchant, with the same make-up as the 1860 Rusk household (S429). Weak or missing: The will never says “son”; no census or estate record names him as one. The 1870 ages run two to three years young, and nothing on that page names Peter H. Martin, so David B. as Robert's brother is not proven. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Record1848
A Robt. B. Martin was appointed postmaster at Gallatin on 20 April 1848 and held the office until August 1849. The page does not say he is the Robert B. of the will S432. In 1850 Robert B. Martin, 23, was a merchant in Sumner County with Urilda, 21, and their son Charles H., 4 months S428. Between about 1852 and 1854 the family moved to Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas. In 1860 he farmed there, and a D. B. Martin, 29, merchant, born Tennessee, lived next door S429. In 1870 he was a merchant in Rusk with Urilda P., Charlie H., Jennie B., Clarra B. and Percy S430. By 1880 he was a widower, 53, farming in Rusk with his sons Charles H., a schoolteacher, and Percy. He gave his father's birthplace as Virginia and his mother's as Tennessee, which matches Peter Hines Martin and Jane Bell. He is still Probable, because no record names his parents S431.
Census1870
By 1870 the D. B. Martin of the 1860 Rusk household was a merchant at Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, 37, with S. N., Ella and Clarance Probable confirm or correct → S1046. Evidence: the same Tennessee-born merchant, North Carolina-born wife and Texas-born Ella as 1860. Weak: the ages run 2–3 years young, and nothing names Peter H. Martin, so David B. as Robert’s brother stays Probable. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Death1841
Her death certificate names her as Mrs. Fannie C. Tyree, born 21 November 1841, daughter of David Chenault and a mother née Quisenberry, both born in Kentucky; she died on 28 August 1919 on the Scottsville Pike, Sumner County, and was buried in the Tyree Graveyard S1240
Census2026
History of this card. 13 Oct 2026
the 1880 census image (S1242) was read again for its relationship column: Mattie and Julia are each entered as daughter of the head, J. A. Tyree; the note had named them without saying so. The birth date on the death certificate image (S1240) was read again and stands, 21 November 1841. 13 Oct 2026 — the line under her name gave her years as 1842–1919, while the note below reads her birth from the image of her death certificate as 21 November 1841 (S1240). The line now reads 1841–1919. Her ages in the censuses on this card (about 1842 in 1850, 28 in 1870, 38 in 1880) fit a birthday late in November 1841; the certificate date is an informant’s statement. 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 4 Oct 2026 (1 note). Mattie and Julia were born after the marriage bond of 1859 (S1251) and are probably her children; neither has a card. What is weak or missing: neither census gives her maiden name, the 1859 bond (S1251) names no parents, and the 1880 page names the girls’ father, not their mother. Sally, 10 in 1870, is in no later record read here. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Research status: PROBABLE as a son of David Chenault and Louisa Quisenberry. In the 1850 census of Sumner County, Tennessee he is “Harvy”, in their household, born about 1837, Tennessee. Evidence: The 1850 Sumner County, Tennessee census household of David Chenault (b. 1800 KY) and Louiza (b. 1811 KY) — the same household that holds Nannie (1844) and Milton W. (1849), anchoring it as this family; his 1920 Sumner County death certificate (S1275) names his parents as David Chenault and a Quisenberry mother, both of Kentucky; a 1907 family history lists Harvey, 1837, among their children (S1292), and in 1870 he is in Sumner County, 33, born Tennessee (S1291). Weak or missing: The parentage on the death certificate comes from an informant, W. L. Chenault, probably a son; the certificate and his son Charles’s give Kentucky as his birthplace against Tennessee in the 1850 and 1900 censuses (S1253), and that difference is unresolved; the 1907 family history is compiled and cites no sources. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Life

Census1900
In 1900 he was a widowed farmer in Justice Precinct 6, Navarro County, Texas, born May 1837 in Tennessee, both parents born in Kentucky, with Anah, William, Nathan, Cleburne and Harvey (born in Tennessee, 1872–1884) and Charles (born in Texas, 1891) S1253. All six are entered in the family tree as his children, each Probable, with no card of their own here. What is weak or missing: this one census sheet is the only record read that puts the five born in Tennessee in his house, and no record read names their mother; the fuller names sometimes given for two of them, Patrick Cleburne and Harvey Jr., come from grave memorials, not from the census. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Burial1920
He died on 11 February 1920 on the Hartsville Pike, Sumner County, Tennessee, a widowed retired farmer, two years back from Texas, and was buried at Gallatin. His death certificate gives his birth as 11 May 1837 and names his parents as David Chenault and a mother born Quisenberry, both of Kentucky S1275. The certificate gives his birthplace as Kentucky, against Tennessee in the 1850 and 1900 censuses; both are recorded here. Know which is right? Use “Add to this record”
Census1870
In July 1870 he was Harvey Chenault, 33, a farmer born in Tennessee with $7,000 in land, in the 3rd Civil District of Sumner County, post office Castalian Springs, with Sally, 22, keeping house S1291; the census states no relationships, but Sally fits the Sally Bullock whom his son Charles’s death certificate names as his mother
Death2026
History of this card. 13 Oct 2026
the line under his name gave his birth as about 1837 and no death, while the notes below already gave 11 May 1837 and 11 February 1920 from his death certificate (S1275). The line now reads 1837–1920, and the family tree carries the same two dates. The note on the 1900 household now says that all six children of that sheet are entered in the family tree. His grade as a son of David Chenault and Louisa Quisenberry did not change. 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 4 Oct 2026 (1 note). Barry is entered in the family tree as her husband; no grade changed. 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 4 Oct 2026 (1 note). Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Probably the “Luta” or Lutie who married David F. Barry: in 1880 Luta, 33, is with David Barry and their children Fannie, Thankful and Davie in Sumner County S1262, and in 1910 Lutie, 63, married 40 years, the mother of 7 children, all living, gives both her parents as born in Kentucky S1263. What is weak or missing: no record yet names Lutie’s parents; the link to Lucy of 1850 rests on county, age and the Kentucky-born parents. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Probably the mother of Lena Barry Dunn (15 July 1885, Sumner County – 31 May 1965, Gallatin), whose death certificate gives her mother’s maiden name as Lutie Chenault and her father as David F. Barry S1264. What is weak or missing: an informant’s statement, eighty years after Lena’s birth. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Two compiled family histories name Lutie Chenault as the wife of David F. Barry and the mother of Thankful (Fanny) Barry Harsh: a DAR lineage book gives her birth as 1847 and the marriage as 1867 S1268, and a Harsh family book gives her birth as 1846 and the marriage as 4 November 1869 S1269. What is weak or missing: both are compiled, not original records; 1869 agrees with the 40 years married in 1910, and neither names Lutie’s parents. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In June 1880 she was probably Rebecca Timmerman, 15, born in New Jersey to New Jersey-born parents, a niece doing housework in the Franklin Township, Gloucester County, household of John Mounce, 69, a farmer, and his wife Ruth, 60. Weak: the spelling, and nothing yet ties the Mounces to the Timberman or Harris family. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1525
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In June 1900 she was apparently the “Mary” Harbauer, born October 1864 in New Jersey, wife for 16 years of Harry Harbauer, a morocco finisher, and mother of 4 children with 2 living, at 480 Third Street, Philadelphia, with her daughters Louisa, 11, and Clara, 9. Research status

Research status: PROBABLE as a daughter of David Chenault and Louisa Quisenberry. In the 1850 census of Sumner County, Tennessee she is Sarah Ann, in their household, born about 1839, Tennessee.
Show detailsHide details

Evidence: The 1850 Sumner County, Tennessee census household of David Chenault (b. 1800 KY) and Louiza (b. 1811 KY) — the same household that holds Nannie (1844) and Milton W. (1849), anchoring it as this family. Weak or missing: The 1850 census states no relationships, so her place as a child of this couple is inferred from the household alone; her 1859 death date comes from a cousin-tree lead, not a record read here. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Life

Death1859
Possible, not confirmed: She may be the Sarah A. Gleson, 20, born in Tennessee, who died in November 1859 in Sumner County (Ancestry record 2123011): age and county fit, but the surname differs. What would settle it: a Sumner County marriage of Sarah A. Chenault to a Gleason about 1855–59.

Family

Parents
Daughter of Georg Melchior Julius Prüger and Elisabethe Sabina Loesch, in the Schwieberdingen family register S159
Marriage1861
Married Johann Georg Enz (read Fux in the Schwieberdingen family register; see below) as his second wife, 28 May 1861, Kirchberg S159
Marriage1861
Confirmed The Kirchberg marriage register for 1861 (no. 5) names her Christiane Juliane Emilie, a tailor’s daughter, single, and her husband Johann Georg Enz, master girdler at Schwieberdingen, born at Gosbach, Oberamt Geislingen, on 7 July 1821, a Catholic widower, son of Matthäus Enz and Barbara Horning; they married at Kirchberg on 28 May 1861 S1543. Inconsistency: the Schwieberdingen family register (S159) was read Johann Georg Fux, son of Matthäus Fux and Barbara Hornung, with the same birth date, the same first wife and the same 1861 marriage, so it is certainly the same man. Best guess: Enz, because the marriage entry itself reads Enz and Ancestry’s independent index of it agrees; Fux is kept as an alternate reading of the family register, where the Kurrent capital and ending could be misread. The family register also calls her “Erdlin, geb. Prüger”, which the marriage register (“ledig”) does not support. What would settle it: his Gosbach baptism of 7 July 1821, or his 1910 Schwieberdingen burial entry. Entered as a best guess under the family’s 6 October 2026 rule: conflicts are recorded, marked, not held back.

Life

Birth1849
Born 11 September 1849 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, by his own statement on his 1892 marriage docket S926; his age at death, 56 years and 7 days, fits S927, and so does his age of 30 in 1880 S416. He is Edwin, 8 months old, in Alfred and Mary Gregg’s household in Cumberland Township, Greene County, in 1850 S928, and Edwin, 10, in the same household in 1860 S929
Death1905
Died 19 September 1905 at 681 South Lang Avenue, Pittsburgh (22nd Ward), a contractor, aged 56, of heart disease, and buried at Carmichaels on 22 September 1905; the register names him Edwin Alexander Gregg S927. The same undertaker had buried Lizzie in 1891 S925
Census1870
In June 1870 he was living with his mother, Mary Gregg, 65, in the Borough of Carmichaels, Greene County, as Augustus E., 20, a carpenter born in Pennsylvania; Mary owned real estate worth $7,500 Confirmed S1034. Alfred is not in the household, so Mary was probably a widow by 1870. This fills the gap between the 1860 household and his 1880 work at the planing mill.
Death1905
His obituary in the Waynesburg Republican of 28 September 1905 calls him Augustus Edwin Gregg, born on 11 September on a farm about a mile from Carmichaels, “the youngest of ten children” of Alfred and Mary Kerr Gregg, and the first of the ten to die S1660. He died near midnight on 19 September after a brief illness; a memorial service was held at the Shady Avenue United Presbyterian Church, East End, on 21 September, and he was buried at Carmichaels the next day beside his first wife. It names his daughters, “Mrs. Ethel Progar and Miss Mabel”, and nine brothers and sisters: Aaron, of Tecumseh, Nebraska; James K., of Carmichaels; Ellis, of Eureka, Kansas; William, of Uniontown; John, of Oregon; Mrs. Anna E. Greenlee, of Elmwood, Illinois; Mrs. Sarah M. Flenniken, of Carmichaels; Mrs. Susan McMillan, of Monongahela; and Mrs. Ruth Rogers, of Wymore, Nebraska Confirmed. The same nine are the children in Alfred and Mary Gregg’s 1850 household. A paid notice in the Pittsburgh Press of 20 September gives the hour of death as 11:30 p.m. and his age as 56. The page text was read by machine and the page images were not re-checked: the printed birth year came out as “1819” and is taken as 1849 from his age.

Parents
His parents now have cards of their own: Alfred Gregg and Mary Kerr, whose maiden name is still probable

Open questions

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: his records use three names. He is Edward in the 1880 census and on both daughters’ death certificates, Augustus E. on the 1892 docket and Edwin Alexander on the death register, and no record explains Augustus. That the Augustus E. Gregg of 1892 is the same man rests on the matching birth date, the ward and his widowhood, not on any record that says so. His first marriage, to Lizzie about 1875, has not been found
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → His mother was born Mary Kerr. The evidence is the one phrase “Mary Kerr Gregg” in his 1905 obituary S1660. What is weak: no other record read so far gives her maiden name, and the obituary was read from machine-read page text, not the page image.

What is weak: her maiden name Darling rests on her two daughters’ death certificates S423S931 and on Mabel’s middle name, Darling, in her 1906 marriage docket S930; the 1891 register gives only the initial D.
