Research status

Research status: PROBABLE. Daughter of James Clinton Caffey and Ebber Lou Owens, Probable and strong. Her birth and parents are read from an image: the delayed Texas birth certificate of Dorothy Mable Caffey, born 24 Sep 1922 at Salado, names her father as James Cleburne Caffey and her mother as Ebber Owens S1397. That this child is the Dorothy Hibler who died in 2013 rests on indexes only: the obituary index (FamilySearch XMRZ-3Y69) and the Find a Grave index give Dorothy Mabel Caffey Hibler, born 24 Sep 1922 at Salado, died 22 Aug 2013 at Kyle, buried at Austin. S1715 Added to the family tree on 11 October 2026.

Evidence: The delayed Texas birth certificate, read from the image, records Dorothy Mable Caffey, born 24 September 1922 at Salado, daughter of James Cleburne Caffey and Ebber Owens (S1397); the obituary index and the Find a Grave index give Dorothy Mabel Caffey Hibler, born 24 September 1922 at Salado, died 22 August 2013 at Kyle, buried at Austin; her brother Woodrow's 1987 obituary names a sister Dorothy Hibler of Austin (S1712). Weak or missing: Her death, burial and married name are read from indexes only, and the 2013 obituary text is unread; the birth certificate was filed late, in 1959, on her mother's oath, and spells the name Mable. Life in the order the records give it

Death1922
Dorothy Mabel Caffey Hibler: born 24 Sep 1922 in Salado, Bell, Texas and died 22 Aug 2013 in Kyle, Hays, Texas
Death1987
She is the “Dorothy Hibler of Austin” named among the surviving sisters in the 1987 obituary of her brother Woodrow Willard Caffey S1712; that she is the same woman is probable, not proved. The birth certificate spells her second name Mable; the 2013 indexes spell it Mabel, which stands here.

  1. S1397Texas standard certificate of birth no. 49268 (delayed, correcting) — Dorothy Mable Caffey, Salado, Bell County, 24 September 1922; filed 4 September 1959. Ancestry, “Texas, U.S., Birth Certificates, 1903–1932”, record 120820723. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 4 October 2026. Confirmed Dorothy Mable Caffey, female, born 24 September 1922, 9 a.m., at Salado, Bell County; father James Cleburne Caffey, 44, born Bastrop County, a farmer; mother Ebber Owens, 43, born Williamson County; attended by I. A. Griffin, M.D., of Salado. The informant was Ebber Owens Caffey of Gunter Street, Austin, who swore on 12 August 1959 that the original certificate read “Unnamed Caffey”. ⚠ A correction sworn by the mother 37 years after the birth. Its middle name “Cleburne” for the father conflicts with the Clinton of his birth entries, and is not adopted; the parents’ ages and the count of five children born are too low against the 1929 certificate (S1374).
  2. S1712Obituary — Woodrow W. Caffey, Bastrop, Texas, died 1 January 1987. Austin American-Statesman, Saturday 3 January 1987, p. 34 (Newspapers.com image 358782147); repeated as a paid notice on 4 January, p. 24 (image 363663279), and in the death list of 5 January, p. 11 (image 358787977). Read from the newspaper text on 4 October 2026. Confirmed Woodrow W. Caffey, 69, of Bastrop, formerly of Austin, died Thursday evening; retired construction superintendent, Methodist, U.S. Army veteran of the Second World War; he and his wife, Irene Etheridge Caffey, “would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 3, 1987”; survived by his wife, a son and three daughters, three brothers (Kirk Caffey of Del Rio, Harold Caffey and Carroll Caffey of Austin) and two sisters (Dorothy Hibler and Lola Pearl Leach of Austin); preceded in death by one son and four grandsons; funeral Monday at Hyltin-Manor Funeral Chapel, the Rev. C. D. Etheridge officiating; interment at Haynie Chapel Cemetery, Garfield. Read as text only: no page image is saved or shown. The obituary does not name his parents. “Harold” is the brother carded as Harrol B. Caffey; “Kirk” matches no census name and is very probably Carey Clabourn Caffey of Del Rio (S1713). The paid notice of 4 January calls him “of Austin”. The children are not named here because they may be living. Entered on 11 October 2026.
  3. S1715Indexes — Dorothy Mabel Caffey Hibler, born Salado, Bell County, Texas, 24 September 1922; died Kyle, Hays County, 22 August 2013. Probable Dorothy Mabel Caffey Hibler, born 24 September 1922 at Salado, died 22 August 2013 at Kyle; burial at Austin, Travis County; living at Austin from 1988. Indexes only; the obituary text is unread. Her birth and parents are read from the image of her delayed birth certificate (S1397). Her husband and descendants are not named here because they may be living. Entered on 11 October 2026.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
