Research status

Research status: PROBABLE as the mother of Henry Henderson; her own birth and her father are Confirmed. Evidence: Henry’s 1887 marriage card and his death card name his parents as William J. Henderson and Carrie K. (Gilfillan) S357S361, and the 1880 census of Ryegate enters him as the son of William J. and Caroline K., 43 S1087. A Caroline Kent Gilfillan was born at Barnet, Caledonia County, Vermont, on 3 September 1836, daughter of Moses Gilfillan, and is Carolin K., 13, in his household at Barnet in 1850 S1657. Added to the family tree on 10 October 2026

Evidence: Henry Henderson’s marriage and death cards name his mother as Carrie K. Gilfillan (S357, S361) and the 1880 census has Caroline K., 43, as his mother (S1087); a Caroline Kent Gilfillan was born at Barnet, Vermont, on 3 September 1836 to Moses Gilfillan (S1657). Weak or missing: No record read states that the Barnet-born Caroline is Henry’s mother; it rests on name, age and neighbouring towns. The birth record and 1850 census were read from the index only, and they disagree on her mother’s name (Hannah or Susanna). Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: that the Barnet-born Caroline Kent Gilfillan is the Carrie K. Gilfillan of Henry’s records rests on her name, her age and the neighbouring towns; no record read states it. The birth record and the 1850 census were read from the index, not the images. Her birth record names her mother as Hannah, but the 1850 household has a Susanna, 42, instead; Hannah T. Gilfillan, who died at Barnet in 1844, is now entered as her probable mother, and Susanna is taken to be a second wife. Her marriage to William J. Henderson and her death have not been read, and no death is entered. Her marriage record, or a death record naming her parents, would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
