Research status

Research status: PROBABLE as a son of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz and her husband Herman Schultz, and so a brother of Minnie Mae Schultz Coffman, Otto Herman Schultz and William John Schultz. The evidence is strong: the index of the 1900 census of Taylor County lists Carl, born in Texas in November 1888, as a son in the household of Herman and Pauline Shultz, with Otto, Willie and Phillip, and the index of the 1910 census of Abilene lists Carl as a son of H. and Pauline Schultz, with Otto, Philip and Minnie S1727. It stays Probable because both of those records are indexes: neither image has been read, and the one page that has been read, the 1920 census, does not name his parents.

Evidence: The index of the 1900 census of Taylor County lists Carl, born in Texas in November 1888, as a son of Herman and Pauline Shultz, with Otto, Willie and Phillip; the index of the 1910 census of Abilene lists Carl as a son of H. and Pauline Schultz, with Otto, Philip and Minnie (S1727). The evidence is strong. Weak or missing: Both of those records are indexes and neither image has been read; the 1920 census page, read from the image, lists a Carl Schultz, 31, next door to his sister at 442 Elm, Abilene, but does not name his parents (S1219); no record of his own after 1920 and no death has been found. Life in the order the records give it

Census1920
In January 1920 a Carl Schultz, 31, born in Texas to German-born parents, a retail merchant in dry goods who owned his house free, was the head of the household at 442 Elm Street, Abilene, the next entry after the Schultz household in which his sister Minnie Mae lived; this is read from the census page image S1219. His age fits a birth in November 1888. The page does not state how he was related to the family next door.
Census2026
History of this card. 12 Oct 2026
card written when he was added to the family tree, from the 1900 and 1910 census indexes (S1727). 12 Oct 2026 — his sister’s 1975 obituary, which names him as a survivor living in Abilene, added to the line on his brother’s funeral notice (S1728). 12 Oct 2026 — the 1920 census page (S1219) re-opened: Carl Schultz, 31, at 442 Elm, next door to his sister, added; the grade is unchanged because the page does not name his parents.

Family parents, marriages, children, siblings

Parents1961
Son of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz. His father, Herman Schultz, is not yet in this record. The notice of his brother Otto’s funeral in 1961 names a brother Carl among the survivors S1721, and the obituary of his sister Minnie Mae in January 1975 names a brother Carl Schultz of Abilene S1728; both are the machine-read text of newspaper pages, not checked on the images.

Open questions what is probable, weak or missing — confirm or correct it

Not found
He was born in Texas in November 1888, by the index of the 1900 census; the day is not known S1727. No record of his death has been found, and no date of death is given here.
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the two census records that call him a son are indexes, and neither image has been read; the 1920 page, which has been read, does not name his parents; no record of his own after 1920 has been found, so his later life, his death and his burial are not known; any wife or children are not named here. 1. S12191920 census — Dee and Minnie May Coffman in her parents’ household, Elm Street, Abilene, Texas. Ancestry, “1920 United States Federal Census (also record 13162875, same page)”, record 13162876. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 4 October 2026. Confirmed Abilene, Taylor Co., ED 263, sheet 7B, January 1920: Dee Coffman, 22, son-in-law, and Minnie May, 19, daughter, in the Schultz household on Elm Street; her parents were born in Germany. The next entry, 442 Elm, is Carl Schultz, 31, head, born in Texas to German-born parents, a retail merchant in dry goods (lines 55–56, re-read from the image on 12 October 2026). ⚠ Confirms what the card already says; the ages are census ages, not birth records. The sheet begins at line 51: the head of the Schultz household and the son Otto of the index are on the sheet before it, 7A, which has not been read. It does not state how the Carl Schultz at 442 Elm was related to the household next door.
  2. S1721Funeral notice — Otto H. Schultz, 76, Abilene Reporter-News, Thursday 25 May 1961, p. 24. Newspapers.com, image 761784218. Machine-read text of the page, read on 4 October 2026; the page image itself has not been read. Probable Otto H. Schultz, 76, lifelong Abilene resident and former owner of Schultz Dry Goods Co., died on Wednesday in Hendrick Memorial Hospital after a two-month illness; born 16 September 1884 at Abilene; partner in the Anderson-Schultz Dry Goods Co. in 1913, sole owner within two years, retired 1957; married Victoria Galbraith at Abilene in 1918; home 749 Butternut Street; funeral by the pastor of First Methodist Church, burial at Elmwood Memorial Park. Survivors include three brothers, Will, Carl and Phil, and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Coffman of 426 Elm Street. ⚠ Machine-read text only; it prints the wife’s first name as “Victor”. The notice does not name his parents. His sons and grandchildren are not named here. Serves the card of Otto Herman Schultz.
  3. S1727Census indexes — Carl Schultz, son in the household of Herman and Pauline Schultz, Taylor County, Texas, 1900 and 1910. FamilySearch: 1900 census index, Justice Precinct 1, Taylor County (M356-4GD); 1910 census index, Abilene Ward 2 (M23Z-F8J). Indexes read on 4 October 2026; no image read. Probable 1900: Carl, born Nov 1888 in Texas, son of Herman and Pauline Shultz, with Otto, Willie and Phillip. 1910: Carl, son of H. and Pauline Schultz, with Otto, Philip and Minnie. ⚠ Index only: no image of either page has been read. It gives a month and year of birth and no day, and it does not settle his later life: no record of his own after 1920, and no death, has been found. Serves the card of Carl Schultz.
  4. S1728Obituary and funeral notice — Mrs. Minnie Mae Coffman, Abilene Reporter-News, 22 January 1975, p. 8, and 23 January 1975, p. 25. Newspapers.com, images 762523095 and 762523186. Machine-read text read on 4 October 2026; the page images have not been opened. Probable She died on Wednesday 22 January 1975 at Hendrick Memorial Hospital, Abilene, aged 74, of 426 Elm; born at Abilene on 4 August 1900, the daughter of early German settlers, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schultz; married Dee Carl Coffman at Abilene on 24 June 1919; Southside Church of Christ; funeral on 23 January, burial at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Abilene. Survivors include a brother, Carl Schultz of Abilene. ⚠ Machine-read text, not checked on the page image. An obituary is a compiled account written 55 years after the wedding: it agrees with the 1940 genealogy on 24 June 1919 (S1222) and adds the place, but it does not settle the date, which stays Probable until the Taylor County marriage record is read. It does not name her mother. Serves the cards of Minnie Mae Schultz Coffman, Dee Carl Coffman and Carl Schultz.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
