Research status

Research status: PROBABLE. Son of James Clinton Caffey and Ebber Lou Owens, Probable and strong. Every record behind this card was read as index text, not from an image: the Texas birth index (FamilySearch 4LJ4-CCPZ) names Carey Clabourn Caffey, born 15 Feb 1911 in Bastrop County, with father James Clinton Caffey and mother Ebber Lutilia Owens; the 1930 census index has Carey, 19, a son in the household of J. C. Caffey in Precinct 6, Travis County; his draft card index of 16 Oct 1940 gives Elgin as his birthplace and Del Rio as his home; the Find a Grave index gives 15 Feb 1911 – 20 Apr 1989 and Haynie Chapel Cemetery, Garfield. S1713 Added to the family tree on 11 October 2026.

Evidence: The Texas birth index names Carey Clabourn Caffey, born 15 February 1911 in Bastrop County, with father James Clinton Caffey and mother Ebber Lutilia Owens; the 1930 census index has Carey, 19, a son in J. C. Caffey's household in Travis County; his 1940 draft card index gives Elgin as his birthplace and Del Rio as his home; the Find a Grave index gives 15 February 1911 to 20 April 1989, Haynie Chapel Cemetery, Garfield; his brother Woodrow's 1987 obituary names a brother Kirk Caffey of Del Rio (S1712). Weak or missing: Every record is read from an index, none from an image; the index of his obituary dates the death three days later than Find a Grave, and the obituary itself is unread; that he was the Kirk of 1987 rests on the Del Rio residence and the obituary index's Carey Kirk Caffey. Life in the order the records give it

Death1911
Carey Clabourn Caffey: born 15 Feb 1911 in Elgin, Bastrop, Texas and died 20 Apr 1989
Census1987
He is very probably the “Kirk Caffey of Del Rio” named among the surviving brothers in the 1987 obituary of Woodrow Willard Caffey S1712: he lived at Del Rio in the 1940 and 1950 census indexes, and the index of his own 1989 obituary calls him “Carey Kirk Caffey” Probable confirm or correct → S1713

  1. S1712Obituary — Woodrow W. Caffey, Bastrop, Texas, died 1 January 1987. Austin American-Statesman, Saturday 3 January 1987, p. 34 (Newspapers.com image 358782147); repeated as a paid notice on 4 January, p. 24 (image 363663279), and in the death list of 5 January, p. 11 (image 358787977). Read from the newspaper text on 4 October 2026. Confirmed Woodrow W. Caffey, 69, of Bastrop, formerly of Austin, died Thursday evening; retired construction superintendent, Methodist, U.S. Army veteran of the Second World War; he and his wife, Irene Etheridge Caffey, “would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 3, 1987”; survived by his wife, a son and three daughters, three brothers (Kirk Caffey of Del Rio, Harold Caffey and Carroll Caffey of Austin) and two sisters (Dorothy Hibler and Lola Pearl Leach of Austin); preceded in death by one son and four grandsons; funeral Monday at Hyltin-Manor Funeral Chapel, the Rev. C. D. Etheridge officiating; interment at Haynie Chapel Cemetery, Garfield. Read as text only: no page image is saved or shown. The obituary does not name his parents. “Harold” is the brother carded as Harrol B. Caffey; “Kirk” matches no census name and is very probably Carey Clabourn Caffey of Del Rio (S1713). The paid notice of 4 January calls him “of Austin”. The children are not named here because they may be living. Entered on 11 October 2026.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
