Research status

Research status: PROBABLE as the mother of Robert Marion Carpenter (1866–1935), husband of Lucinda Bowles Carpenter. In June 1880 Ala, 34, was the wife of William Carpenter in Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, in whose household Robert, 14, is entered as a son S964. The Arizona death record of Robert M. Carpenter (Kingman, 1935) names his mother as Ala Stevens (FamilySearch index), and Robert named his eldest daughter Ala. What is weak: her motherhood and maiden name rest on an index. Know more? Add to this record.

Evidence: In 1880 Ala, 34, was the wife of William Carpenter in Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, with Robert, 14, entered as a son (S964); Robert M. Carpenter’s 1935 Arizona death record names his mother as Ala Stevens. Weak or missing: The census relates Robert to William only, and the Arizona death record is read from an index, not the image; her maiden name rests on that index. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the 1880 relationship column relates Robert to the head of the household only, so her motherhood and her maiden name Stevens rest on the index of his death record, not an image. Other trees give her as “Ala Calley Martha Stephens”, born 5 August 1846; neither the extra names nor the day is in a record read here.

  1. S9641880 United States Federal Census — Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, ED 104, page 32, dwelling 274 (22 June 1880). Ancestry record 39681260. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 24 September 2026. Confirmed William Carpenter, 41, head, farmer, born Kentucky, parents born Tennessee; Ala, 34, wife, born Kentucky; sons John 17, Robert 14 (farm laborer), Charles D. 12, and daughters Margarett 15, all born Kentucky; Amanda 10, Mary J. 8, Eliza B. 6, Sarah E. 4, Lyllian 2 and Josephine 1, all born Arkansas. The household is read in full. That this Robert is Robert Marion Carpenter, who married Lucinda Bowles in 1887, is Probable: Kentucky birth, age and Arkansas residence fit, and his daughter Ala E. was named for his mother, but no record yet names his parents. Collection: 1880 United States Federal Census.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
