How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Mildred A. Rose
b. Jul 1898 California, enumerated as Daughter in the 1900 household, bracketed as a twin with her brother Edward S55 — which is what makes Antone and Louise ancestors rather than same-surname strangers. Died 7 Oct 1960, Alameda County, as Mildred A Springer (California Death Index; b. 26 Jul 1898, mother's maiden name Mendonca) S316. Married Frank T. Silva (Frank Silva Jr).

Mildred Rose Silva — detail from the three-generation photograph (FamilySearch Memory 9943586)
S323.
- Born 26 July 1898, California — the day is from the California Death Index S316; enumerated as a two-year-old daughter in her
own father's household in the 1900 census, Washington Township, Alameda County, where she and her twin brother Edward are bracketed "Twins"
S55. That is what lifts her from a name in a
parent field to a documented person with parents of her own.
- In 1920 she is in her husband's parents' house, indexed by OCR as
"Mildresk" Silva, born 1899 California S48
- Her daughter's 1918 birth index entry carries Rose in the
mother's-maiden-name field — independent corroboration from a vital-records index
S56
- Married Frank T. Silva (Frank Silva Jr) before September 1918, when he named "Wife Mildred Silva" on his draft card; in January 1920 the couple were in his father's household S48. Later surname Springer S316.
- Second marriage, to William Springer, after Frank Silva Jr died in 1924; date and place not yet found. Her granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins named him on 1 October 2026 Confirmed (family testimony): “My Grandmother. Moms Mother. And her second husband William Springer.” She died as Mildred A Springer S316.
The 1950 census finds Mildred Springer, 51, born California, with her husband William Springer, 50, born California, an auto parts salesman, in Oakland, Alameda County
Probable (name, age, birthplace and husband match; nothing else on the entry ties it to her) —
United States Census 1950, ED 67-450B, p. 76, line 7. The marriage record itself is not yet found.
- A photograph of Mildred and William Springer by a picket fence, late 1930s or 1940s, from Patricia Collins’s collection, is in Photos below with its AI-assisted enhanced version.
- Died 7 October 1960, Alameda County, California, as Mildred A Springer
Confirmed (index; certificate not seen) — California Death Index 1940–1997:
born 26 July 1898, California, mother's maiden name Mendonca S316. The birth date matches the
1900 twins entry and the maiden name matches her mother's, so this is her. The 1960 date is restored.
It was withdrawn on 14 September because searches under Silva and Rose found nothing; she had remarried and died as Springer.
- A three-generation photograph shows her with her daughter Aileane and granddaughter Nancy S323; it is in Photos below and her portrait above is cut from it.
- 🆕 A studio portrait of two couples, about 1915–1920 Confirmed (family testimony): Mildred and her first husband Frank Da Silva Jr, with her sister Helen (Rose) and Helen’s husband Victor Johnson, as her granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins named them on 1 October 2026 (Helen is Mrs. Victor Johnson in Mildred’s 1960 death notice; Patti confirmed the name). ⚠️ Helen married Victor only after her first husband William Farrell was killed on 10 June 1946 (she was still Mrs. O’Farrell in 1942), and Frank Jr died in 1924, so the man beside Helen in this photograph may be Farrell; not settled. - Son: Joseph Rose (b. Oct 1888, California) Confirmed S55
- Born February 1840, Portugal — the 1900 census gives Feb 1840, age 60 S55, and the 1910 census age 62 S201 Confirmed. The 1920 census gives his son's father's birthplace as the Azores S314; the island is not recorded. The earlier "c.1864" on this page was our own misreading of the 1900 sheet.
- Immigrated 1870 S55
- Died between April 1910 and January 1920: alive in the 1910 census S201, absent in January 1920, when Louise is head of the household S314. The date "1932" came from a user tree and has been withdrawn: no Alameda Antone Rose/Rosa death appears in the California Death Index for 1932. A FamilySearch tree gives 1911, which no record read so far confirms.
- Father of Mildred A. Rose (Aileane's mother) — listed as Head of household
at Washington Township, Alameda County in 1900, with Mildred as Daughter, a twin with her brother Edward

- Married Louise da G. de Mendonça Probable confirm or correct → in 1879 — the Alameda County marriage index dates it 3 Jan 1879 S315 (a FamilySearch tree gives 26 Jan; the ceremony date is unconfirmed), and the 1900 census says married 21 years S55

Great-grandmother · b. c.1856 · d. probably 5 July 1936
- 🆕 Photograph Confirmed: the only known photograph of her, outdoors in a garden, about 1925–1936, from the collection of her great-granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins, who identified it on 1 October 2026: “Great Grandmother Rose. From the Azore island.” Family testimony; the print itself is unlabelled. See Photos below.
- Son: Joseph Rose (b. Oct 1888, California) Confirmed S55
- Born c.1855–56, Portugal — the Azores, per the 1920 census S314; island not recorded — aged 44 in the 1900 census S55 and 54 in 1910 S201; the 1900 birth-year column contradicts its own age column, and two censuses agree on the age S12
- 🆕 Died, probably, 5 July 1936, California Probable confirm or correct →: the California Death Index has “Rosa, Luiza G. A.”, aged 80, file 40139 S624. The name fits her maiden name, Louise da G. de Mendonça, and the age fits a birth about 1856. It is filed under Rosa, not Rose, and the certificate has not been ordered, so it stays probable. The date “1953” is withdrawn: it came from a user tree S12 with no record behind it. added 26 September 2026. She is alive in January 1920 as head of her own household at Washington Township S314.
- Mother of Mildred A. Rose and her twin brother Edward (both b. July 1898) — listed as Wife, age 44, in the 1900 census
household of Antone Rose S55
- Married Antone Rose in 1879 — indexed 3 Jan 1879 in Alameda County S315; the ceremony date is unconfirmed S55
- Nine children born, eight living in 1900: Rose (Nov 1879), Louise (June 1885), Antone Jr (June 1887), Joseph (Oct 1888), Frank (May 1891), the twins Edward and Mildred (July 1898), and Helen (Oct 1899) S55
- Maiden name Mendonça Confirmed — five records name her so: the 1879 Alameda marriage index, "L. da G. de Mendonca" S315; Joseph's 1913 marriage, "Louisa Mendosa" S317; Helen's 1918 marriage, "Louise Mendonca" S319, and Helen's NUMIDENT, "Louisa Mendonca" S320; and Mildred's 1960 death index entry S316. Frank's 1914 marriage gives "Louise Silver" S318. The fuller form "Dutra de Mendonça" Probable confirm or correct → comes from a FamilySearch tree S322.
- Parents Probable confirm or correct → Francisco Dutra de Mendonça and Francisca Eugénia of Feteira, Faial, the Azores. A FamilySearch tree places her in their family S322, and the baptisms of two of its children, Francisca (1847) and Manoel (1850), are indexed at Horta S321. Her own 1856 baptism has not been found, so the link is not yet proven.

Helen Agnes Rose
ConfirmedDaughter of Antone Rose · 1899–1995
- Research status: CONFIRMED — added 24 September 2026 from a record that names the parents; entered in the family tree the same day.
- Daughter of Antone Rose and Louise Rose; sister of Mildred A. Rose
- Born 3 October 1899, Irvington, California, the youngest; Helen in the 1900 household S55
- Married William Bernard Farrell, 30 November 1918, San Francisco; died 20 November 1995
- 🆕 Helen Agnes (Rose) Farrell Johnson Confirmed (family testimony + 1960 notice). Her sister Mildred’s death notice (Oakland Tribune, 9 October 1960, p. 40) names her as Mrs. Victor Johnson of San Leandro, and Mildred’s granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins confirmed on 1 October 2026 that “Uncle Victor Johnson” sounded right.
- 🆕 First husband: William Bernard Farrell (O’Farrell), married 30 November 1918 in San Francisco; she was still “Mrs. Helen O’Farrell” of San Leandro in 1942.
- 🆕 William B. O’Farrell was killed on 10 June 1946 Confirmed (newspaper reports, read 2 October 2026). The Hayward Daily Review of 11 June 1946, page 1, names him as William B. O’Farrell of 1525 170th Avenue, Ashland, “husband of Mrs. Helen O’Farrell”, the same address Helen gave in 1942 S1178S627. Driving home from his job at the Pacific Ice Company at about 6:40 p.m., his car crossed the centre line and hit a 10-ton truck loaded with steel beams head-on, on San Leandro Boulevard at 92nd Avenue, Oakland. The trailer overturned and spilled the steel into the street; he was dead on arrival at Highland Hospital S1178S1180. The family remembered it as a steel-laden truck that dropped its load onto his car (Patricia (Proeger) Collins, 1 October 2026). The papers agree in substance; the difference is that his car struck the truck and the trailer then overturned. He was 46. ⚠️ His birth date is open: the Find a Grave index gives 16 June 1899, a user-made FamilySearch profile gives 16 January 1899 S1182; both fit age 46.
- 🆕 A daughter, Mrs. Lorraine Peterson Probable confirm or correct →. The Daily Review funeral notice of 12 June 1946 lists his survivors as “Mrs. Helen O’Farrell, widow” and “one daughter, Mrs. Lorraine Peterson” S1179. ⚠️ The notice makes her William’s daughter, not explicitly Helen’s; no birth record naming Helen as her mother has been found. She is not given a card until one is.
- 🆕 Helen Agnes Rose died 20 November 1995, as Helen A. Johnson Confirmed: the Social Security Death Index entry for Helen A. Johnson gives 3 October 1899 – 20 November 1995, exactly the dates of Helen Agnes Rose’s Social Security record S1181S320.
- 🆕 Second husband: Victor Johnson Confirmed (family testimony; the surname comes from the 1960 notice). They married after June 1946, when her first husband was killed. No marriage record has been found, and which Victor Johnson he was is still open: two Alameda County couples in the 1950 census, Victor E. and Helen A. Johnson (Eden Township) and Victor B. and Helen R. Johnson (Murray Township), are leads only.
- 🆕 A studio portrait of two couples from Patricia Collins’s collection shows Helen with her sister Mildred and Mildred’s husband Frank Da Silva Jr; Patti names the fourth person as “her husband Victor”. ⚠️ The date and the names conflict, and this record does not settle it: the dress suggests about 1915–1920, Frank Jr died in December 1924, and Helen was still married to Farrell until his death in June 1946. So the man with Helen may be her first husband, William Farrell, named by the family after the husband they knew. In Photos below.

- Antone Rose — born February 1840, Portugal; arrived 1870;
married 1879 S315; died between April 1910 and January 1920 S314; Head of household at Washington Township, Alameda County
in 1900, with his own father and mother both recorded as Portugal-born
S55
- Louise Rose — born about 1856, Portugal; listed as Wife, age 44, on the
same page S55. Her maiden name is
Mendonça Confirmed, in five records, first indexed as da G. de Mendonça in 1879 S315. Alive in January 1920 as head of her household S314; death not found.
- Mildred Rose is in that household as "Daughter", born July 1898, bracketed as a twin with her brother Edward — which is
what makes these two Aileane's great-grandparents rather than same-surname strangers
S55
- They lived in the same township as the Silvas. Both of Aileane's parental
lines are Portuguese immigrants who landed in the same few square miles of Alameda
County, a generation apart.
- ⚠️ Their records say "Portugal", not "Azores" — and they are not upgraded to
match the Silvas. "Rose" is the standard Anglicisation of Portuguese
Rosa / Roza, so Azorean Roses in Alameda County are numerous; two
candidates whose records do say "Azores Islands" were found and
deliberately not attached — one is buried at Livermore, the other was born in
1869, thirty years off.

→ cardAntone Rose's island of origin
The 1900 and 1910 censuses say only "Portugal" for Antone Rose (b. Feb 1840); the 1920
census says Azores S314 but names no island.
He died between April 1910 and January 1920. If he was also from Faial, like Frank Silva Sr,
the Silva–Rose case for one island community strengthens; if not, it weakens.
What closes it — his naturalization record, or his Alameda County
death record of 1910–20.
Mildred Rose's second marriage
Her death is found — 7 October 1960, Alameda County, as Mildred A Springer
S316 — so she remarried after Frank Silva Jr died in
1924. Her granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins names him William Springer (1 October 2026), and the
1950 census finds Mildred and William Springer, both born in California, in Oakland. The Springer marriage itself has not been seen.
What closes it — the Alameda County marriage record. The 1927
"Mildred Silva b. abt 1898" and 1930 "Mildred A. Rose" index candidates need checking
against the images.

"Rose" is the standard Anglicisation of Portuguese Rosa / Roza. 🔑 SUPPLEMENT, 22 September 2026 — the same page re-served (rid 36140745) and read at full resolution. The children are named: Rose (Nov 1879, already married), Louise (June 1885), Antone (June 1887), Joseph (Oct 1888), Frank (May 1891), Edward and Mildred (July 1898), bracketed as twins, and Helen (Oct 1899). ⚠ The mother's age column (44) and birth-year column disagree; the age governs, agreeing with S201, so she was born c.1855–56. - S56California Birth Index, 1905–1995 — Aileane Silva, born 15 August 1918, Alameda, California, FamilySearch
ark:/61903/1:1:V256-J8H. The index's single associated surname is the mother's maiden name, and it reads Rose — corroborating Mildred Rose as her mother from a vital-records index rather than from NUMIDENT or a user tree. Its limit, stated: the index does not print the mother's given name, so it establishes the surname Rose, not specifically "Mildred A." - S2011910 U.S. Federal Census — Antone Rose household, Washington Township, Alameda County, California. Ancestry record 938582; ED 157, sheet 4A. Read from the image at full resolution, 22 September 2026. Antone, 62, and Louisa J., 54, immigrated 1880, own the farm free; Antone Jr, Joe and Frank next door. ⚠ Louisa J.'s 54 and the 1900 sheet's age 44 both disagree with the 1865 birth year read from S55; with the 1900 age of 44 they place her birth c.1855–56, and the page now says so. Where Edward, Mildred and Helen are entered in 1910 is also under review.
- S3141920 U.S. Federal Census — Louisa A. Rose household, Washington Township, Alameda County, California. Roll T625_92, ED 212, page 5A; Ancestry collection 6061, record 3288770. Read from the index, 23 September 2026; the image has not yet been read. Louisa A. Rose, Head; Edward Rose, son, 21; Antone Rose, son, 33, widowed; Helen Farrel, daughter, 20, and Wm Farrel, son-in-law, 20. Parents' birthplace Azores. Antone Sr is absent, so he died between April 1910 and January 1920. Louisa is indexed at age 80, against 44 in 1900 and 54 in 1910; read the image before using that age.
- S315Alameda County, California, Index to Marriage Certificates No. 2 — “R” page. Ancestry record 31576, on disk. “Rosa, A. da × L. da G. de Mendonca, Jany 3 79”, Book F[?] p. 225. An index, initials only; the certificate in Book F p. 225 would give her full name. A FamilySearch tree's “Louisa Dagloria Dutra de Mendonça” and 26 Jan 1879 are not supported by this entry beyond “da G.”; “Dutra” is unsupported.
- S316California Death Index, 1940–1997 — Mildred A Springer. FamilySearch record
VPWY-81H, read 23 September 2026. Born 26 July 1898, California; died 7 October 1960, Alameda County; mother's maiden name Mendonca. An index; the certificate has not been seen. The birth date matches the July 1898 twins entry of the 1900 census (S55) and the mother's maiden name matches Louise Rose's, so this is Mildred A. Rose under a later married surname. FamilySearch also attaches this row, wrongly, to her mother as a death record. - S317California, San Francisco County Records — marriage of Joseph Rose and Fanny Maria Waara (Lytala), 13 August 1913, San Francisco. It also gives Antone a death in 1911, Louisa a death on 5 July 1936 and a marriage on 26 January 1879, none of them with a record behind it. - S323FamilySearch Memory 9943586 — three-generation photograph. - S324California Death Index, 1905–1939, and Find a Grave — Antone D. Rose. FamilySearch
QKSM-CP5S and QVKS-DK9T, read 23 September 2026. Born c.1848, died 1914 aged 66, buried at Hayward. A candidate only for Antone Rose (b. Feb 1840 on the 1900 census, 62 on the 1910 census). Not proven; many Antone Roses lived in Alameda County. - S624California Death Index, 1905–1939 — “Rosa, Luiza G. A.” Ancestry collection 5187, record 1001358. Read 25 September 2026. Probable Died 5 July 1936, aged 80, file 40139. An index entry, not the certificate. It is filed under ROSA, not ROSE; the name fits Louise Rose's maiden name, Louise da G. de Mendonça, and the age fits her birth about 1856. The certificate has not been ordered.

- S632U.S. World War I draft registration, 1918, serial 2188 — Edward Rose, Irvington, California. Ancestry record 29585958. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Signed Edward Rose. The card disagrees with itself: someone born in July 1899 was 19, not 20, in September 1918. The 1900 census's July 1898, bracketed with his twin Mildred, is kept.
