Thomas Walton Caffey Sr.
TexasConfirmed1873–1930
- Born 13 October 1873, Texas on his memorial — ⚠️ his 1917 draft
registration card reads 14 October, one day apart, and neither is preferred
here S34; died 13 April 1930, Salado, Bell County;
buried Salado Cemetery S34
- Named as T.W. Jr's father in the NUMIDENT record
S33
- 🆕 In 1910, in Williamson County, he was 36 and in his second marriage, of five years. His wife is written “Rachel E.”, 22, probably the Medie of family accounts; with them were Thomas O., 3 months, and Mattie Lee, 11 S521. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 His World War I draft card, now read from the image, was filled in at Salado on 12 September 1918: Thomas Walton Caffey, 44, born October 14, 1873, farming, medium height, slender, grey eyes, dark hair Confirmed S997. His nearest relative is written Alyeda (or Almeda) Caffey, Salado; the name is hard to read, and it may be Medie's formal name. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026

- His memorial quotes Texas death certificate #16496, which names his own parents
as "Van Caffey (b. Alabama)" and "Matty Lee (b. Georgia)" — identified
as Hooper Van Caffey (1832–1901) and Melvina Amanda "Mattie" Griffin (1850–1933)
Probable
S34. ⚠️ Note the certificate says
"Matty Lee" where the memorial says Griffin; that discrepancy is
unresolved and the surname is not treated as settled.
- Married Medie Owens in 1904 S34 —
⚠️ the county is not settled: the full pedigree records 25 September 1904 at
Bastrop, the Caffey line note gives Bell. Neither rests on the
marriage record, which has not been retrieved, so neither is preferred here

Medie Owens
TexasConfirmed1887–1954 · maiden name Owens, on her death certificate
- Born 28 September 1887 at Salado; died 28 July 1954 at Austin State Hospital, of pneumonia, with senility and debility, her certificate filed in
Travis County, widowed, occupation practical nurse, dying under her second
married name Stobaugh S70; buried Salado
Cemetery in the same plot as her first husband S34
- 🆕 In 1900 she was 12, at home at Manor, Travis County, with her parents Charles W. and Alice R. Owens and six brothers and sisters: William W., Epper L., Charles E., Mary P., Annie H. and Robert G. The enumerator wrote her as “Rachel A”, born September 1887 S661. With her death certificate, that puts both parents on records; they are now Confirmed. added 26 September 2026.
- In 1940, as Medie Stobaugh, she was widowed, a practical nurse in Austin, with her son Thomas Caffey, 16, and her stepson Earle Stobaugh, 18 S219
- In 1944, as Mrs. J. W. Stobaugh, she swore to her son Howard Lee Caffey's birth S233. In 1950 she was at 2117 Clifton, Austin, widowed, with her mother Allice Owens, 83 S231
- ⚠️ An apparent conflict, resolved. The NUMIDENT names T.W. Jr's mother
"Medie Stobaugh"; FindAGrave calls her "Medie Owens Caffey"
S33S34.
Not two women and not an error — the SSA recorded the surname she bore when her
application was filed, which by then was her second married name. She married
John William Stobaugh in 1934, four years after Thomas Walton Caffey Sr. died.

- So Owens is her maiden name on a state record
Confirmed. Her 1954 Texas death
certificate, read from the image on 16 September 2026, names her father
Charles Owens (born Texas) and her mother Alice Walden (born Tennessee); the informant was the hospital, so the 1900 census's Arkansas and Texas birthplaces are preferred
S70. Until that day it rested on FindAGrave
contributor data and on the fact that it explains the Stobaugh surname.
- FindAGrave carries the same parents as Charles W. Owens (1863–1939) and
Alice Rachael Waldon (1867–1958)
S34. The names are now on a certificate;
🆕 the dates are now on their own death certificates as well: Charles, born 9 March 1863 in Arkansas, died 6 July 1939 S780; Alice, born 14 September 1867 at Waco, died 8 August 1958, with Medie as the informant S781. Alice's certificate spells her father Waldon, the memorial's spelling; Medie's says Walden. Charles's own certificate and the 1910 census S783 both say Arkansas, so the “Texas” on Medie's certificate is outweighed (added 27 September 2026).
What is still open — the given name of the Stobaugh husband, and the
1904
Caffey–Owens marriage record, which would date the first marriage. The pedigree file
puts that marriage at 25 September 1904 in
Bastrop County and the Caffey line note
at
Bell County, c.1904; neither is a record yet. The death record once named here
as the closer has been obtained — it is
S70 — and it was filed in
Travis County, not
Bell.

319512, place him in 1944 as a corporal in Battery M, 4th Battalion,
12th Marines — the 3rd Marine Division's artillery regiment, a 105 mm
howitzer battery, "in the field" — and in 1945 as a sergeant at the

TexasConfirmedKristin's paternal grandmother · 1925–2001
- Born 25 August 1925, Austin, Travis County, Texas

Hers is the reason the family was in Austin at all — it is her home town, not
her husband's.
- Died 14 April 2001, Hays County, Texas; buried Austin Memorial Park, plot

- Grandfather on her father's side Julius Franz Kretschmar S34; grandparents on her mother's side Otto Paul Ladusch and Emma Stein Ladusch S327S328
- 🆕 She played in the Austin High School Orchestra. “Kretschmar, Lucille” is on the Orchestra Personnel roster in the 1942 Comet, when she was 16. The group photograph has no names, so she is not pointed out in it S438. added 25 September 2026.

exactly seven names keyed to exactly seven portraits in the second photo row. A

Confirmed
- Born 7 March 1946, Austin, Travis County, Texas; died 30 December 2016,
Austin, aged 70. A lifelong Austin resident
S31S34
- McCallum High School; B.S. Electrical Engineering, The University of Texas,
1969 S31 — the Cactus lists him with the
Class of 1968 S63, and both are true:
the yearbook records the class he entered with, the obituary the year the degree
actually came. Career at DuPont Chemical in Nashville, then Texas Instruments in Austin

- His obituary names the couple outright: "his daughter Kristin Proeger and
her husband Earl […]" S31.
That sentence welds this record's two halves together from the published side —
the link is not an inference from a surname.
- His father's middle name is Walton, not William — the Texas Birth Index on his
own 1946 birth record reads Thomas Walton Caffey
S130, and so does the Austin Memorial Park
gravestone S34. An index and a stone, neither
derived from the other. Earl's online Ancestry tree records "William" and is wrong
on this point; this page has read Walton throughout and continues to.
- Son of Thomas Walton Caffey Jr. and Lucille Lorine Kretschmar — the
1950 census enumerates him as "son," aged 4, in their Austin household
S32, and his obituary says he was born "to
Lucille and Thomas Caffey" S31
- Married Clare LaVonne Walker in 1969, Tarrant County, Texas
S127; the marriage was dissolved in
1980 in Travis County S128.
The state file numbers are withheld. ⚠️ One index disagrees on the wedding day.
The Newspapers.com Marriage Index reads 1969; the Texas Marriage Index
and the Divorce Index both read 7 June. That newspaper collection is
machine-extracted — Ancestry itself stamps it as AI-derived and possibly erroneous —
so this page takes 7 June, two state indexes against one derived one, and
records the disagreement rather than hiding it
S127
- Two children: Bradley Neal Caffey (b. 1972) and Kristin
(b. 1975), both named to this couple by the Texas Birth Index
S126
- His sisters: Sandra Caffey Falkenberg (28 July 1948 – 4 April 2025) and
Donna Caffey Rinn, who is living and whose details are withheld

This card replaced four sentences of family testimony. Until 13 September 2026 he
was on this page as "Thomas Caffey," with no dates, no parents and a

⚠️
One theoretical gap, stated for completeness. No single government document
names both his parents — his own Texas death certificate would, but Texas records after
2000 are not in any free index and the public Social Security extracts end long before
2016
S33. The census sheet, his obituary and his
sister's obituary name them instead, three times over, which is why this is Confirmed

Family photograph, 25 April 2015Bradley Neal Caffey
LivingConfirmedKristin's brother · b. 1972
- Born in 1972. The Texas Birth Index names
his father as Thomas Alan Caffey and his mother as Clare LaVonne Walker
S126 — the same two parents the same
index gives for Kristin three years later. That is what makes him her full
brother, and it is a state record, not a surname match.
- Corroborated independently: his grandmother Dorothy LaVonne Walker's 2022
obituary lists him and Kristin in a single sentence as grandchildren of the same
woman S36. Two sources, neither derived from
the other. Confirmed
- Married Erin Helm in 2003 — three separate
indexes agree on the date S131. Her own
ancestry is a different family and out of scope for this record, which is why it is
not worked here.

- L. C. Anderson High School, Austin — the 1990 volume's index prints
"Caffey, Bradley N 'Brad' (12)" directly above "Caffey, Kristin (9)"
on the same page S132: the two of them
at one school in one year, a senior and a freshman, which is exactly what a 1972 and
a 1975 birth predict. ⚠️ A 1987 Austin yearbook also indexes him, but
which school that volume is has not been verified and is not claimed here.
- His children are Preston Caffey and Scarlett Caffey, named in their
great-grandmother's obituary S36.
Their ages are not established from any record read here, so this page
publishes no dates, ages or schools for them. Earl chose on 25 September 2026 to
publish two items that show them in full: the obituary page image itself, and a
2015 family portrait of Brad and Erin with two children, below. The portrait's
uploader tagged only Brad and Erin, so the children in it are
Probable as Preston and Scarlett.
- He is already a person in Earl's own Ancestry tree, where the relationship graph
labels him brother-in-law. He was new to this research corpus, not to the
tree — which is a different claim and is worth keeping straight.
Were there other children? Probably not, and "probably" is the honest word.
Across the whole Caffey record cluster and the full obituary survivor list, only Brad and
Kristin appear as children of Thomas Alan Caffey and Clare LaVonne Walker. That is
absence of evidence — but from two sources that each had reason to name everyone, which
is why it is
Probable confirm or correct → and not Confirmed
S126.
He is living, and this page publishes living adults in full — Earl's rule of
21 September 2026. His residence history, which the records also supply down to
city and year, stays in the research corpus: that is an editorial judgement about what
belongs in a genealogy, not a privacy rule.

R. Piland and Virginia F. Montgomery S911S914. In 1920, in Hays County, “Arvin P.” (the image reads “Orvin O.”), 26, and his wife Mabel, 24, had a daughter Alice L., 5 S910; in 1930 Mabel was a widow at Austin with Alice Lorena, 15 S924, and a Texas birth index names Alice Lorene's father as Orbin Oliver Piland S923. Jennie, born August 1858, died in 1927 S915. Research status: Orbin as Alice's father is CONFIRMED by the two census images and the birth index (relabelled 29 September 2026); his dates and his parents stay PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. Piland of his 1950 household S518, was born 31 October 1895 at Galveston and died 13 April 1961 at Austin, by her Texas death certificate, which names her father as D. C. Logue S907. In 1900 “Mable”, 4, born October 1895 in Texas, was in the Waco household of D. C. Logue and his wife Virginia A. S906, who had married as D. C. Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby in Calhoun County, Alabama, on 2 April 1890 S908. Find a Grave gives her father as Dan Crutcher Logue, 1858–1939 S909. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: the death certificate image has not been read; it gives Galveston as her birthplace while the 1900 census has the family in Waco; the Hamby family has not yet been researched. added 28 September 2026.

Orbin Oliver Piland
ConfirmedFather of Alice Lorene Piland Caffey · 1893–1929
- Research status: CONFIRMED as the father of Alice Lorene Piland, wife of Thomas Osborn Caffey. The 1920 census of Hays County, read from the image, has “Orvin O. Piland”, head, 26, born in Texas, with his wife Mabel, 24, and their daughter Alice L., 5 S910; in 1930 at Austin, read from the image, Mabel is a widow with her daughter Alice Lorena, 15 S924. FamilySearch’s index of Texas births, a record independent of both censuses, gives Alice Lorene Piland, born 20 November 1914 at Kyle, Hays County, as the daughter of Orbin Oliver Piland and Mabel Larrimore Logue S923. Added to the tree on Earl’s approval of 28 September 2026. Added 29 September 2026
- Husband of Mabel Logue Piland (1895–1961) and father of Alice Lorene Piland, born 1914 S923, who married Thomas Osborn Caffey in Austin on 15 December 1935 S621; Mabel’s probable parents, Dan Crutcher Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby, have their own cards (30 September 2026)
- Son of Edward Raymond Piland and Virginia Francis “Jennie” Montgomery, by his death certificate, which names his parents as E. R. Piland and Virginia F. Montgomery S911 Probable confirm or correct →
- Born 22 March 1893 at Gonzales, Texas, by his own World War I draft card, made out at Buda, Hays County, on 5 June 1917, when he was farming for Jno. Howard and had a wife and two children S932; the index of his death certificate gives 24 March S911
- In 1922 he was a truck driver for the Texas Company, living at 104 Chicon, Austin, with Mabel S941
- Died 30 September 1929, aged 36, by the index of his Texas death certificate S911S914. Mabel is a widow by the 1930 census S924
- What is weak or missing: his father-daughter link and his birth are settled from images, and his 1917 draft card gives “Orbin Oliver Piland” in full. His death date and his parents still rest on the index of his death certificate, whose image has not been read, and where he died has not been read. The 1920 census writes his name “Orvin O.” and Ancestry indexes it “Arvin P.”
- In 1910, aged 17, he was at home in Justice Precinct 4, Travis County, Texas, as “Oliver O.”, born in Texas, a son in the household of Edward R. Piland, 52, and Virginia F., 53, with Craton, Myrtle, Rubin, Edward R. Jr. and Carrol H. S1025. The census was read from the image. What is weak: it gives his names in reverse order, so the match rests on the age (17 fits his 1893 birth), the Texas birth and the parents’ names, which agree with his death certificate S911. Edward Raymond Piland
ProbableEvidence: The index of his son Orbin's 1929 Texas death certificate names Orbin's parents as E. R. Piland and Virginia F. Montgomery; the Gonzales County marriage licence, read from the image, has Mr. E. R. Piland marrying Miss Jennie Montgomery on 28 June 1883, and the Texas marriage index gives their names in full; the family is in Gonzales County in 1900, and an Edward, 20, is there in 1880 with his brother Thomas; his own 1932 Texas death certificate, read from the image, gives his birth as 12 January 1859 and his death on 2 July 1932 near Buda, and the 1910 census has him with Virginia F. and their son Oliver O. Weak or missing: The 1900 census is read from its index only; the licence gives only his initials, so Edward Raymond comes from the index; his 1932 death certificate names his parents as Reuben Piland and Mary Gibson, but its informant was a son, so they are not yet proven. Evidence: the index of his son Orbin’s 1929 Texas death certificate names Orbin’s parents as E. R. Piland and Virginia F. Montgomery S911; the Texas marriage index has Edward Raymond Piland marrying Virginia Francis “Jennie” Montgomery in Gonzales County on 28 June 1883 S913; the family is in Gonzales County in the 1900 census S912. Added 29 September 2026
- Father of Orbin Oliver Piland (1893–1929), whose daughter Alice Lorene married Thomas Osborn Caffey S911
- Husband of Virginia Francis “Jennie” Montgomery, married 28 June 1883 in Gonzales County, Texas, by L. L. Bradley, minister; the licence, read from the image, names the couple as Mr. E. R. Piland and Miss Jennie Montgomery S913
- In 1880 he is probably the Edward, 20, single, a farmer born in Texas, living in Gonzales County with his brother Thomas Piland, 24 S933 Probable confirm or correct →
- What is weak or missing: the death certificate and the 1900 census are read from their indexes only, not the images; the marriage licence gives only “E. R.”, so the names Edward Raymond come from the index. His 1932 death certificate gives his birth and death and names his parents as Reuben Piland and Mary Gibson S1024, but its informant was a son, so the parents are not yet proven: a Lamar County household of 1860 with a Thomas and an Edward, 1, is held back because its parents’ birthplaces disagree with the 1880 census
- 🆕 Died 2 July 1932 near Buda, Hays County, Texas, a widower, and buried in Live Oak Cemetery; born 12 January 1859 in Texas. His death certificate, read from the image, names his parents as Reuben Piland and Mary Gibson; the informant was his son Houston Confirmed S1024. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 In 1910 in Justice Precinct 4, Travis County: Edward R., 52, married 27 years, and Virginia F., 53, mother of 8 children, all living, with Craton, Myrtle, Rubin, Oliver O., 17, Edward R. Jr. and Carrol H. Confirmed S1025. added 29 September 2026

- 🆕 In April 1930 he was living as a widower, aged 71, in Justice Precinct 5, Hays County, in the farm household of John Howard and his wife Ida, 46, born in Texas, as John’s father-in-law Confirmed S1033. That makes Ida Howard his daughter, a sister of Orbin Oliver Piland, whose 1917 draft card has him farming at Buda for “Jno. Howard”. Two years later Edward died near Buda. added 29 September 2026

Virginia Francis “Jennie” Montgomery
ProbableEvidence: The index of her son Orbin's 1929 Texas death certificate names his mother as Virginia F. Montgomery; the Gonzales County marriage licence, read from the image, has Miss Jennie Montgomery marrying Mr. E. R. Piland on 28 June 1883, and the Texas marriage index gives their names in full; her own Texas death certificate, now read from the image, gives her birth as August 1858, her death on 25 September 1927 near Buda, Hays County, and her father as James Montgomery; the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses of DeWitt County, next to Gonzales, read from the images, put Virginia F., born Texas about 1858-59 and a twin of Harvey, in the household of James (P.) and Elenor F. Montgomery, both born Tennessee. Weak or missing: Her son Orbin's death certificate is read from its index only, so her place as his mother rests on that index; the licence calls her only Jennie, so Virginia Francis comes from the index and her death certificate; her death certificate leaves her mother's maiden name unknown, so Elenor F. as her mother rests on the three censuses. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable mother of Orbin Oliver Piland · 1858–1927
- Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence, and added to the tree on that approval. Evidence: the index of her son Orbin’s 1929 Texas death certificate names his mother as Virginia F. Montgomery S911; the Texas marriage index has her marrying Edward Raymond Piland in Gonzales County on 28 June 1883 S913; the index of her own Texas death certificate gives her birth as August 1858 and her death in 1927 S915. Added 29 September 2026
- Mother of Orbin Oliver Piland (1893–1929), whose daughter Alice Lorene married Thomas Osborn Caffey S911
- Wife of Edward Raymond Piland, married 28 June 1883 in Gonzales County, Texas, as Miss Jennie Montgomery, by the licence, read from the image S913
- Born August 1858; died 1927, by the index of her death certificate S915
- What is weak or missing: both death certificates and the marriage are read from their indexes only, not the images; “Jennie” comes from the marriage index. The 1860–1880 censuses give her birth in Texas and put her with James and Elenor F. Montgomery (above), but her death certificate, now read, names her father James Montgomery (below), but no record names her mother in words
- 🆕 Three censuses of DeWitt County, Texas, the county next to Gonzales, all read from the images, show a Virginia Montgomery born in Texas about 1858–59, a twin of Harvey, in the household of James (P.) and Elenor F. Montgomery, both born Tennessee: “Virginia F.”, 2, in 1860 S1093; Virginia, 11, marked a twin in 1870 S1094; and Virginia, 21, daughter of James P., bracketed as twins with Harry Alex, in 1880 S1095. That makes James and Elenor her probable parents Probable (strong) confirm or correct →: the name, the initial F., the age and the county agree three times over twenty years, but no record yet names them as the parents of Jennie Piland in words
- 🆕 Her death certificate, now read from the image, names her father as James Montgomery Confirmed: Mrs. Virginia F. Piland died on 25 September 1927 near Buda, Hays County, born August 1858 in Texas; the informant, R. Piland of Austin, did not know her mother’s maiden name; she was buried at Live Oak Cemetery the next day S1183. So James P. Montgomery is her father, confirmed, and Elenor Frances Bradford, his wife in every census that holds Virginia, her probable mother

Howard Lee Caffey
ConfirmedSon of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr. · born 1917
- Research status: CONFIRMED — added 24 September 2026 from a record that names the parents; entered in the family tree the same day.
- Son of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr. and Medie Owens; brother of Thomas Walton Caffey Jr.
- Born 28 September 1917, Salado, Bell County, Texas; his delayed birth certificate of 1944 names both parents S233
- In 1940 at 84 East Avenue, Austin, working for the Owl Taxi Co. S234
- Died 9 July 1988, Travis County, Texas
- 🆕 He married Marian Zelphia Clawson on 24 October 1937 at Calvary Baptist Church, Austin S519. In 1950 he was a cab driver and watchmaker in Austin, with his wife Dorothy M., Jessie Lee and two Piland stepsons S520. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1940 he and Marian lodged at 2115 Willow St., Austin; he drove an ice-cream route S547. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 On 5 October 1946 in Travis County he married Mrs. Dorothy Piland, the Dorothy M. of the 1950 household S681. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Marian's birth certificate records a daughter of Jess Clawson, 26, a labourer, and Lillie Reeves, 23, both born in Texas, born on 28 November 1921 at 3201 San Gabriel Street, Austin, their first child; she was not yet named S732. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 His wife Dorothy's parents were probably Page S. Mangum and Arlene Mangum Probable confirm or correct →: the 1940 census of Austin, read from the image, lists Dorothy M., 19, daughter, single and in college, born Texas, at 1802 Pearl Street in the household of Page S. Mangum, 52, and his wife Arlene, 41, both born Mississippi, with a younger daughter Kathleen G. S888. The Texas birth index records a son of Logue Taylor Piland, born in 1942, with his mother entered as Dorothy May Mangum S889, and she married Howard as Mrs. Dorothy Piland in 1946 S681. What is weak: the identity runs through an index and a licence rather than one document; the census does not say Arlene is Dorothy's mother; Arlene's maiden name, given in family trees as Furr, and both parents' birth days and death dates are on no document read. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 The state birth index names him and Marianne Zelphia Clawson as the parents of Jessie Lee Caffey, born in Travis County in 1939 Confirmed S1122. It is the same Jessie Lee who is in his 1950 household. It also names him and Dorothy Maye Mangum as the parents of a son, Howard David Caffey, born in Travis County in 1950 S1123. That gives Dorothy’s maiden name as Mangum, the surname of the parents proposed for her above, though the index does not name her parents.

Mattie Lee Caffey
ConfirmedDaughter of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr. · born 1898
- Research status: CONFIRMED — added 24 September 2026 from a record that names the parents; entered in the family tree the same day.
- Daughter of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr. and his first wife Emma Rachel Ault; half-sister of Thomas Walton Caffey Jr.
- Born 30 October 1898, Texas; the 1900 Bastrop County census names her parents Thomas W. and Emma R.
- Mattie, 21, in her father's household in 1920 S232
- Married Thomas Guy Collins, 25 December 1922, Bell County; died 9 October 1988
- 🆕 Her first child with Thomas G. Collins, a daughter, was born and died on 20 October 1923 and is buried at Beaukiss S485. In 1930 they were farming in Precinct 4, Bastrop County, with sons Ladell J. and Howard R. S486. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 By 1940 she had remarried: she is “Lee”, 42, wife of Ewell F. Hughes, a Lee County farmer, with her children Ladell, Howard R. and Lucy Lee Collins S538. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 Her first husband, Thomas Guy Collins, born at Tenaha, Shelby County, on 15 October 1898, a son of T. J. and Lucy Collins, died at Bustamante, Zapata County, on 12 January 1935 and was buried at Elgin S676. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Her daughter Lucy Lee Collins was born 16 July 1932 in Precinct 4, Bastrop County, recorded as her fifth child; the certificate, filed late, gives the father's birthplace as Panola County S770. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Her first husband's parents were probably Thos (Thomas J.) Collins and Lucy Collins Probable confirm or correct →: the 1900 census of Precinct 5, Shelby County, Texas, read from the image, lists Guy, son, born October 1898, in the household of Thos Collins, a farmer born September 1869 in Texas, and his wife Lucy, born April 1872, the mother of two children, both living, with an older son Roy S872. Guy's own 1935 death certificate names his parents as T. J. Collins and Lucy S676. What is weak: the 1900 census gives the boy only as Guy; Lucy's maiden name, given in family trees as Blake, the middle name Joseph, and the couple's birth days and death dates are on no document read. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 In April 1910 her future first husband, Guy Collins, then 11, was living with his parents T. J. and Lucy Collins, his elder brother Roy and two younger children on a rented farm in Atascosa County, Texas, read from the census image S1114. The family had moved there from Shelby County, where they were in 1900 S872. Lucy’s age is given as 31, which does not fit the 1900 census.

Hooper Van Caffey
ConfirmedFather of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr. · born 1832
- Research status: CONFIRMED — added 24 September 2026 from the 1880 and 1900 Bastrop County censuses, which name him as the father; entered in the family tree the same day.
- Father of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr.
- Born October 1832, Alabama
- Married Amanda Melvina Griffin, 1 May 1870, Pike County, Alabama
- 🆕 In 1850, aged 17, he was living in the Montgomery County, Alabama household of Charles Caffey, 61, and Nancy, 59: co-residence, not proof of parentage, but the first record for that link S484. He had a first wife, probably Amy Richardson: his son C. B. Caffey's death certificate names her S478, and in 1880 his older children, John W., Cordelia D. P., Charles B. and the widowed Fanny E. Willson, have an Alabama-born mother S479. The Pike County register confirms his marriage to Amanda M. Griffin on 1 May 1870 S482. He served in the 10th Alabama Infantry, held Texas Confederate pension no. 204, and died on 30 November 1901 S481. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 Probable confirm or correct → His first marriage was probably to “May P. Richardson”, licensed in Autauga County, Alabama, on 21 December 1857 S555. Evidence: the name Hooper V. Coffey and a date that fits his eldest daughter's birth about 1858. The typed WPA copy and the name May were the weak points; the original register, now read, says Amy P. and gives the wedding as 22 December 1857 S646. What is still weak: the register gives no ages or birthplaces, so the match rests on the name H. V. Coffey and the dates. If you know more, use “Add to this record”. In 1870 he and his second wife Amanda were in Pike County with his four children S543. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 The 1880 agricultural schedule for Bastrop County shows him owning his farm: 55 acres tilled and 74 wooded, worth $700, with $1,300 of produce in 1879 S616. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 The original Autauga County register has now been read. It records the licence of Hooper V. Coffey and Amy P. Richardson on 21 December 1857 and their marriage the next day, 22 December 1857, by R. B. Jones, M.G.; he signed the bond “H. V. Coffey” S646. The typed copy's “May P.” is a misreading of Amy P. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Son of Charles Caffey, now Confirmed: on 11 March 1868 the administrator of Charles Caffey’s Montgomery County estate swore that “H. V. Caffey” was one of his nine heirs at law S663. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In October 1860 H. V. Caffey, 28, had his own household in the 2nd District of Montgomery County, Alabama (P.O. Ramah), next door to Charles Caffey, 72, and Nancy, 60. With him were a wife, 26, born Alabama, Fanny, 2, and John, 6 months Confirmed S1151. The wife’s name reads Al…a (Alia or Alva?), not Amy or May, so her name is still open. If you can read it, use “Add to this record”.

Amanda Melvina Griffin
ConfirmedMother of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr. · born 1850
- Research status: CONFIRMED — added 24 September 2026 from the 1880 and 1900 Bastrop County censuses, which name her as the mother; entered in the family tree the same day.
- Mother of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr.; wife of Hooper Van Caffey, married 1 May 1870, Pike County, Alabama
- Born 1 April 1850, Georgia
- 🆕 She was known as Mattie. As Mrs. Mattie Caffey she applied for a Confederate widow's pension in 1914, giving her age as 63 and her arrival in Texas as December 1872 S481. In 1900 she had borne 12 children, 7 living S483. Her daughter Anna Bell Gold (5 January 1871 – 5 May 1949) is buried in Kyle Cemetery S480. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1920 she was 68 and widowed, living in Bell County with A. C. Caffey, 25, who lists her as “Mattie, mother, 68”, his wife Lorena and their children S536. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 The 1870 census, taken 16 weeks after her marriage, has her at 20 in Pike County, Alabama, with Hooper (written “Henry V.”) and his four children S543. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1860 Amanda M. Griffin, 10, born Georgia, was in Pike County, Alabama, in the household of Major Griffin, 56, a farmer born in North Carolina, and Matilda M., 34, born Georgia, with five other children S629. Probable confirm or correct → Major and Matilda M. are probably her parents: her name, age, birthplace and county all fit. But the census does not state relationships, and no record read so far names her parents. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Probable confirm or correct → A second candidate household, found 26 September 2026. In 1850, Amanda M. Griffin, 4 months old, was in Washington County, Georgia, with Henry Griffin, 24, a farmer, and Sarah, 26, and two small boys, Micajah B. and Augustus, all born in Georgia S662. Evidence: her name and an age that fits her April 1850 birth in Georgia; an online family tree makes Henry and Sarah her parents. What is weak: the 1850 census names no relationships; 🆕 Sarah's maiden name is now on two originals: Henry Griffin married Sarah Boatwright in Washington County on 26 December 1844 S794, and the 1930 death certificate of Mrs Emma Barnhart, born about 1861, names her parents as Henry Griffin and Sarah Boatwright S795 (added 27 September 2026). Neither record names Amanda, so they prove the couple, not that she is their daughter; and the 1860 household above, Major and Matilda M., is not ruled out. Henry and Sarah may be her parents and the 1860 home a relative's, or the reverse. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.
- 🆕 In 1880 Sarah Griffin, 55, was a widow in Macon, Georgia, with three of her children, Irvin H., Mary Ann and Emma (later Mrs Emma Barnhart), and two grandchildren Confirmed S796. Henry Griffin had died before June 1880. added 27 September 2026
- 🆕 The boy Micajah B. of the 1850 household is probably the M. B. Griffin who died at Marshall, Texas, on 7 February 1936 Probable confirm or correct → S797. Evidence: his certificate gives his birth in Washington County, Georgia, and his father as Henry Griffin, his mother as “Ella Boatwright” (image re-read 27 September 2026), the first record to put the Boatwright name on one of Henry Griffin's children. What is weak: the informant, W. H. Griffin, was a generation removed; “Ella” is not the Sarah of the 1844 marriage and three censuses, so Sarah stands; and its birth date, 8 November 1841, falls before that marriage and does not fit his age of 4 in 1850, so about 1845–46 is preferred. added 27 September 2026
- 🆕 A white Henry Griffin registered to vote in Washington County, Georgia, on 19 July 1867 Probable confirm or correct → S804. Evidence: it is the county of the 1844 marriage and the 1850 household. What is weak: the return gives no age or family, and Henry Griffin is a common name. added 27 September 2026

Charles Caffey
ConfirmedFather of Hooper Van Caffey · about 1789–1860
- Research status: CONFIRMED as Hooper’s father since 26 September 2026. His estate file has been read: on 11 March 1868 his administrator swore that “H. V. Caffey” was one of his nine heirs at law S663, and in 1850 Hooper V., 17, was living in his home, dwelling 19, with Charles, 61, and Nancy, 59 S484
- Father of Hooper Van Caffey; husband of Nancy (Lewis) Caffey
- Born about 1789, North Carolina; died in 1860, before 21 November, when his estate was appraised in Montgomery County, Alabama S663
- 🆕 His heirs at law in 1868, all of full age: Lindsey R. Caffey (the administrator), H. V. Caffey, Jane Caffey, Polly Stoudemire and Sarah Eylands of Montgomery County; Dorcas Green of Columbus, Georgia; John L. Caffey of Autauga County; Sophia Owens of Pike County; and Drucilla Eylands of Coffee County S663. A petition for dower was still before the court in 1862, so his widow outlived him. The file does not name his own father. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 His marriage bond survives. On 27 November 1811, with John Hill as bondsman, Charles Caffey gave bond in North Carolina for his marriage to Nancy Lewis, and signed it himself S647. It is the first record to give Nancy's maiden name. It does not by itself show that Hooper was their son; the 1868 heirs list does. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Probable confirm or correct → Probably a son of John Caffey Sr. Evidence: on the same 1850 page, Thomas Caffey, 66, and Michael Caffey, 68, both born in North Carolina, lived two doors either side of Charles, in dwellings 18 and 21 S484. Thomas, Michael and Charles are three of the seven children named in John Caffey Sr's 1821 will, and each is of an age to be his son. What is weak: neighbours are not a record of parentage; the will names a son Charles but nothing yet shows he is this Charles. His 1860 Montgomery County probate would help. added 26 September 2026. 🆕 On 28 September 2026 the original will-book entry was read: it names “my Seven Children (Viz) Thomas Caffey Elizabeth Caffey Henry Caffey Michael Caffey John Caffey Charles Caffey and Hooper Caffey” S848, confirming the abstract's wording but adding no age or residence for Charles; Earl accepted the link as probable that day.
- 🆕 His mother: probably Mary Buchanan Probable confirm or correct →. A 1923 SAR application gives her as John Caffey Sr.'s wife, married about 1780 S849. What is weak: the SAR papers are compiled, and by 1821 John's wife was Sarah S848, so she may have been a second wife. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 A compiled surname card in the Alabama surname files also makes him “Charles&sup4; Caffey (John³, Michael², John¹)”, married to Nancy Lewis, with children John, Monroe, Wm. Hooper, Jane, Parylee, Philadelphia and Lindsay S667. Probable confirm or correct → It is a second, independent compiled account of the same chain, and its Jane, John and Lindsay match the 1868 heirs. What is weak: it is compiled and cites nothing, so it does not upgrade the “probably a son of John Caffey Sr.” line above. Its 1786 birth year conflicts with his 1850 age, and its “Wm. Hooper (m. — Vance)” may or may not be Hooper Van. If you know more, use “Add to this record”. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1830 a Charles Caffey in Montgomery County, Alabama, headed a household of a man aged 40–49 and a woman aged 30–39, which fits Charles, born about 1789, and Nancy, born about 1791, with eleven children under 20 and one enslaved man. An Elizabeth Lewis, Nancy's maiden surname, headed a household on the same page S742 Probable confirm or correct →. What is weak: the census names only the head, and the page has no county header, so the county comes from the index. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In October 1860, the year he died, Charles Caffey, 72, farmer, real estate $2,500, was in the 2nd District of Montgomery County (P.O. Ramah) with Nancy, 60, born Maryland, Jane, 28, Mary Stoudenmire(?), 30, and James, 14, Hooper, 12, Charles, 10, and Mary, 8. H. V. Caffey, 28, and his young family lived next door Confirmed S1151. The census gives his birthplace as South Carolina, against North Carolina elsewhere.
- 🆕 In 1840 Charles Caffey was still heading a household in Montgomery County, Alabama, with one enslaved person and five people working in agriculture Confirmed S1154. The tallies are faint; the oldest man and woman fit Charles and Nancy, and the boys fit Hooper and his brothers.

Nancy (Lewis) Caffey
ProbableEvidence: The 1850 Montgomery County, Alabama census: Nancy, 59, in Charles Caffey's home with Hooper V., 17; the 1811 marriage bond of Charles Caffey and Nancy Lewis gives her maiden name. Weak or missing: Shared household only: no record read so far names her as Hooper's mother. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Mother of Hooper Van Caffey · born about 1791
- Research status: PROBABLE — Nancy, 59, born in North Carolina, is in Charles Caffey's 1850 Montgomery County, Alabama household with Hooper V., 17 S484. The census states no relationships, and no record read so far gives her maiden name, Lewis
- Probable mother of Hooper Van Caffey; wife of Charles Caffey
- Born about 1791, North Carolina; death not yet found
- 🆕 The North Carolina marriage bond of Charles Caffey and Nancy Lewis, dated 27 November 1811 and signed by Charles, gives her maiden name for the first time S647. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 The 1866 Alabama state census lists a Nancy Caffey heading a household of two women over 20 in Montgomery County, on the same page as Elizabeth Caffey and L. R. Caffey S736 Probable confirm or correct →. If it is her, she was still living in 1866. What is weak: the list gives no ages or birthplaces, so the name and county are the only link. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1840 the household of Charles Caffey in Montgomery County, Alabama, included a woman of about her age S1154. The 1840 census names only the head, so she is not named.

Anna Bell Caffey Gold
ProbableEvidence: Her 1949 Texas death certificate naming Hooper Van Caffey and Mattie Griffen, and Annie B., 9, in Hooper's 1880 household. Weak or missing: One certificate, informant J. E. Gold, relationship not stated, written 78 years after her birth. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Daughter of Hooper Van Caffey · 1871–1949
- Research status: PROBABLE — her 1949 Texas death certificate, no. 25185, names her father as Hooper Van Caffey and her mother as Mattie Griffen, the name Amanda went by S480; “Annie B.”, 9, is in Hooper's 1880 household S479. One certificate, informant J. E. Gold, relationship not stated, written 78 years after her birth
- Daughter of Hooper Van Caffey and Amanda Melvina Griffin; sister of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr.
- Born 5 January 1871, Alabama; died 5 May 1949, Austin, Texas; buried Kyle Cemetery
- Married Henry L. (Henry Lewis) Gold: the 1930 and 1940 censuses and her son Vernon's birth record all name him (below). J. E. Gold, shown here before as her husband, is the informant on her 1949 death certificate, which does not say how he was related to her S480
- 🆕 Her son Vernon Clyde Gold was born in rural Caldwell County on 3 April 1908. A 1969 amendment to his birth certificate, sworn by his sister Lola E. Whittington of Kyle, names his parents as Henry Lewis Gold and Anna Caffey S696. The 1930 and 1940 censuses agree (below). added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1930 at Kyle, Hays County, she was Anna, 59, born in Texas of Alabama-born parents, wife of Henry L. Gold, 58, a farmer who owned his place, with Vernon, 22, and Hazel, 15 S711. In 1940, still at Kyle, she was Anna B., 69, born in Alabama, and Henry L., 68, gave the answers S712. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1900, in Precinct 1 of Bastrop County, she was Annie Gold, born January 1871 in Alabama, wife of Henry Gold, born August 1871 in Texas to German-born parents. They had married about 1892 and had four children: James E., Lela E., Alva V. and Henry R. Next door was John W. Caffey, born January 1860 in Alabama S730. In 1920, in Hays County, Henry L. and Anna Gold had Myrtle, Vernon and Hazel B. at home S731. Her son James E. Gold is probably the “J. E. Gold” who gave the answers on her 1949 death certificate S480 Probable confirm or correct →. What is weak: the certificate does not say how J. E. was related to her. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In April 1910 she was Anna, wife of Henry L. Gold, a renting farmer, in Justice Precinct 5 of Caldwell County, Texas; she had borne 7 children, 5 of them living, and at home were Elmo, 16, Eva, 15, Alvie, 13, Myrtle, 8, and Vernon, 2. Her age is entered as 30, ten years short of her 1871 birth Confirmed S1092

Charles B. (C. B.) Caffey
ProbableEvidence: His 1948 Texas death certificate, which names Hooper Van Caffey and Amy Richardson. Weak or missing: The only record naming Amy, and the informant was the Confederate Home, not family. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Son of Hooper Van Caffey · 1865–1948
- Research status: PROBABLE — his 1948 Texas death certificate, no. 9724, names his parents as Hooper Van Caffey and Amy Richardson S478, and the 1880 census gives Hooper's older children an Alabama-born mother S479. It is the only record that names Amy, and the informant was the Confederate Home, not family
- Son of Hooper Van Caffey and his first wife, Amy Richardson of Alabama; half-brother of Thomas Walton Caffey Sr.
- Born 7 October 1865, Mobile, Alabama; died 15 February 1948 at the Texas Confederate Home for Men, Austin; buried at Elgin
- 🆕 In 1940 he was 74 and owned his house at Elgin, Bastrop County, the same one as in 1935. With him were his wife Frances H., 67, born in Texas, who gave the answers, and Cordelia Harris, 77, a widow born in Alabama S715. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 The census has him at Elgin and nearby in Bastrop County, Texas, for thirty years. In June 1900 he was C. B. Caffey, 34, born October 1865 in Alabama, renting a farm, married ten years to H. F., born August 1872 in Texas, with Roy, Olly, Ethel, Myrtis and Earl Confirmed S1055. In 1910 he was “Charley B. Coffey”, 43, owning a mortgaged farm at Elgin, with Fannie and eight living children, Clayborn E., Ollie, Ethel, Myrtis, Earl, Corinne and Marie S1056. In 1920 he was renting, 54, with Fannie H., William O., Earl B., Corine, Mari H., Ralph and Ruth E. S1057. In 1930 he was 64, a house painter who owned his home, first married at 23, with Frances H., first married at 16, and Ralph, Marie and Ruth S1058. So he married Fannie (Frances H.) about 1890. The 1920 census alone gives his birthplace as Texas. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 A Bastrop County birth report, read from the image, records a daughter, not yet named, born 5 December 1907 one mile east of Elgin to C. B. Caffey and Mattie Caffey of Elgin S1097; the state birth index lists the same birth, file 3377, under “Coffey” S1098. The place and the father fit him, and the 1910 census has a daughter Marie, 2 S1056; but his wife is H. F. or Fannie in every census, never Mattie, so either the report misnames her or this is another C. B. Caffey Probable confirm or correct →

John Caffey Sr.
ProbableEvidence: John Caffey's 1821 will, read from the original Montgomery County will book, names seven children including Charles; in 1850 Charles, 61, lived beside Thomas and Michael, two more of the named sons. Weak or missing: No record pins the will's Charles as this Charles: the will gives no ages or residences, and the 1850 census states no relationships. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Probable father of Charles Caffey · 1751–1826
- Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. His will, dated 2 August 1821 and read from the original Montgomery County will book, divides his personal estate among “my Seven Children (Viz) Thomas Caffey Elizabeth Caffey Henry Caffey Michael Caffey John Caffey Charles Caffey and Hooper Caffey” S848, and in 1850 Charles, 61, born North Carolina, lived in Montgomery County beside Thomas, 66, and Michael, 68, two more of the named sons S484. What is weak: no record pins the will's Charles as this Charles; the will gives no ages or residences Probable confirm or correct →
- Probable father of Charles Caffey
- His will, dated 2 August 1821 and probated 22 August 1826, leaves “my Loving wife Sarah Caffey” the quarter section he lived on, the north-west quarter of section 28, township 16, range 18, and for her life the enslaved man Jordan, the enslaved woman Rachael and her son Ems; after her death the land goes to his son Hooper Caffey S848S61
- Born 1751, Dorchester County, Maryland, and died 19 August 1826, Montgomery County, Alabama, by a 1923 Sons of the American Revolution application, a compiled lineage paper, which gives his wife as Mary Buchanan, married about 1780 S849; his headstone reads 1751–1826 and the Alabama Journal reported his death S61. An online tree's middle name “Thomas” is on no record read, and its “Cambridge” and “Ramer” come only from compiled indexes and Find a Grave
- 🆕 Two compiled papers agree with his will and headstone. A typescript family chart in the Alabama Surname Files gives John Caffey, born near Cambridge, Dorchester County, Maryland, 1752, married about 1780 Mary Buchanan, died Montgomery County 19 August 1826, with children Henry, Michael, Thomas (born 24 May 1784), John (born 29 September 1786), Charles (born 1788), Hooper (born 1 November 1793) and Nancy S1072. A DAR Lineage Book (page 185, member 116597) says John Caffey (1752–1826), born in Maryland, enlisted in 1776 in the 6th company, Maryland Line, and died at Montgomery, and runs a line through his son William Hooper Caffey (1793–1835) S1073. Evidence: the names, places and death date match the will S848 and headstone S61. Weak: both are late compilations that cite nothing on the page; the children’s birth dates and the war service are unproven, the chart names a Nancy and not the will’s Elizabeth, and the headstone’s 1751 stands against their 1752. Mary Buchanan
ProbableEvidence: A 1923 SAR application gives Mary Buchanan as John Caffey Sr.'s wife, married about 1780, within which Charles, born about 1789, would fall. Weak or missing: The SAR papers are compiled and disagree on her death year; by 1821 John's wife was Sarah, so a second wife cannot be ruled out, and the father link is itself only probable. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable mother of Charles Caffey · married about 1780
- Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. A 1923 Sons of the American Revolution application gives Mary Buchanan as the wife of John Caffey Sr., married about 1780 S849, so Charles, born about 1789 S484, would fall within that marriage. What is weak: the SAR papers are compiled; his father link is itself only probable; and by 1821 John's wife was Sarah S848, so a second wife before 1789 cannot be ruled out Probable confirm or correct →
- Probable mother of Charles Caffey; wife of John Caffey Sr. by the SAR application S849
- No record read gives her dates. Two more SAR applications, seen only in an index, also name her but give death years of 1737 and 1837, which cannot both be right. An online tree's “Mary Ellen”, its birth on 18 December 1755 at Rectortown, Fauquier County, Virginia, and its death in 1817 in Guilford County, North Carolina, are on no record read

Dan Crutcher Logue
ProbableEvidence: The index of his daughter Mabel's 1961 Texas death certificate names her father as D. C. Logue; in 1900 at Waco, read from the image, D. C. Logue, born November 1857, a grocery salesman, heads a household with his wife Virginia A. and their daughter Mable, 4; the Calhoun County, Alabama, marriage register, read from the image, has D. C. Logue marrying Virginia Alice Hamby on 2 April 1890; in 1910 at Cuero he is Dan C. Logue, 52, manager of a cotton mill, with Virginia and Mabel, 14, and in 1920 in Grayson County “Doctor C.” Logue, 60, born in Tennessee; a Find a Grave memorial gives his full name, Dan Crutcher Logue, and his dates, 24 November 1858 to 11 April 1939, buried at Sherman, Texas; the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Tennessee censuses, read from the images, have a Crutcher Logue aged 1, 12 (a mill spinner) and 21, in the households of H. D. and Mary A. Logue and then with a wife Jennie. Weak or missing: The name Dan and his exact dates rest on Find a Grave alone, and nothing read yet ties the Tennessee Crutcher to the Waco D. C. Logue except name, age and mill work; the 1860 and 1870 censuses do not state relationships, so his parents are not proven; the 1880 wife Jennie, 19, cannot be Virginia, born 1867, and is not identified; and the 1900 census gives his birth as November 1857, a year earlier; his daughter’s death certificate is read from its index only; and the 1930 census calls his wife Virginia a widow, which sits against a death in 1939. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable father of Mabel Logue Piland · 1858–1939
- Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence, and added to the tree on his approval of 30 September 2026. Evidence: the index of his daughter Mabel’s death certificate names her father as D. C. Logue S907; the 1900 census of Waco, read from the image, has D. C. Logue, 42, with his wife Virginia A. and their daughter Mable, 4 S906. Added 30 September 2026
- Father of Mabel Logue Piland (1895–1961), wife of Orbin Oliver Piland and mother of Alice Lorene, who married Thomas Osborn Caffey S907S906
- Husband of Virginia Alice Hamby, married 2 April 1890 in Calhoun County, Alabama, as D. C. Logue, by the Calhoun County marriage register, read from the image S908; the 1900 census has them married ten years S906
- Born 24 November 1858 and died 11 April 1939, buried in West Hill Cemetery, Sherman, Texas, by his Find a Grave memorial, which gives his full name and his wife as Virginia Alice Logue S909 Probable confirm or correct →. The 1900 census, read from the image, gives his birth as November 1857 S906; the 1910 census gives his age as 52 S1080 and the 1920 census as 60, born in Tennessee S1081
- 🆕 In 1900 he was a grocery salesman at 1609 North 6th Street, Waco S906; in 1910 the manager of a cotton mill at Cuero, DeWitt County S1080; and in January 1920 in a cotton mill in Grayson County, owning his mortgaged home S1081. The 1920 enumerator wrote his name “Doctor C.”, an expansion of D. C. added 30 September 2026
- What is weak or missing: the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses and the marriage are now read from the images, but the name Dan and his exact dates rest on Find a Grave alone, a compiled memorial, not a record (the name Crutcher is now on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses S1108S1109S1110), and the 1900 census gives November 1857, not 1858; in 1930 his wife Virginia is enumerated as a widow in her daughter’s household S924, which does not fit a death in 1939, so either the census or the memorial dates may be wrong, or the couple had separated. His parents are not proven; the 1860 and 1870 censuses point to H. D. and Mary A. Logue S1108S1109, and the 1920 census gives his birthplace as Tennessee S1081
- 🆕 Probably the son of H. D. and Mary A. Logue. In 1860 at McMinnville, Tennessee, Crutcher, 1, is in the household of H. D. Logue, 32, and Mary, 30, with Florance, Texas and Frank S1108; in 1870 at Pulaski, Giles County, Crutcher, 12, is a spinner in the household of Mary A. Logue, 38, a cloth trimmer, with the same Texas and Frank (now Franklin) S1109; and in 1880 in Giles County Mary Logue, 40, is a widow S1110. Probable confirm or correct → Evidence: the uncommon given name Crutcher, his age, Tennessee birth and cotton-mill work, which he kept up as a mill manager in 1910 and 1920. Weak: neither census states relationships, and nothing read yet ties the Tennessee boy to the D. C. Logue of Waco except name, age and trade
- 🆕 In June 1880, in the 7th Civil District of Giles County, Crutcher Logue, 21, a laborer, heads a household with his wife Jennie, 19, a weaver in a cotton factory; both are marked as married within the census year S1110. Jennie cannot be Virginia Alice Hamby, who was born in July 1867 S906 and married him in 1890 S908, so this looks like an earlier marriage; Jennie’s maiden name and what became of her are not found. Probable confirm or correct →
- 🆕 Father of Leola Logue Piland (1892–1938): her Texas death certificate, read from the image, names her father as “D. C. - 🆕 Father of Victor Quillen Logue (born 1902): both of Victor’s Los Angeles marriage records name his father as D. C. Logue S1191 S1192

Mabel Logue Piland
ProbableEvidence: In 1920 in Hays County, read from the image, Mabel, 24, is the wife of Orvin O. Piland with their daughter Alice L., 5; in 1930 at Austin, read from the image, Mable Piland, 34, a widow, heads the household with her daughter Alice Lorena, 15, and her mother Virginia Logue, 62; in 1950 she is Mabel L. Piland, mother-in-law, in Thomas O. Caffey's household; the index of her Texas death certificate gives her birth on 31 October 1895 at Galveston, her death on 13 April 1961 at Austin, and her father as D. C. Logue. Weak or missing: The death certificate is read from its index only, not the image; it gives Galveston as her birthplace while the 1900 census has the family in Waco; a FamilySearch birth index for her daughter calls her Mabel Larrimore Logue, and the Larrimore name has not been explained. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Mother of Alice Lorene Piland Caffey · 1895–1961
- Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence, and added to the tree on his approval of 30 September 2026. Her place as mother of Alice Lorene Piland is read from census images: in 1930 at Austin the relationship column names Alice Lorena, 15, as her daughter S924 Confirmed; her birth, death and parents rest on the index of her death certificate S907. Added 30 September 2026
- Wife of Orbin Oliver Piland: in 1920 in Hays County, read from the image, “Orvin O. Piland”, 26, heads the household with his wife Mabel, 24, and their daughter Alice L., 5 S910; in 1922 the Austin directory lists “Piland Orbin O (Mabel)” at 104 Chicon S941
- Mother of Alice Lorene Piland, born 20 November 1914 at Kyle, Hays County, by FamilySearch’s index of Texas births, which names her parents as Orbin Oliver Piland and Mabel Larrimore Logue S923; Alice married Thomas Osborn Caffey in Austin on 15 December 1935 S621
- Daughter of Dan Crutcher Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby: her death certificate names her father as D. C. Logue S907; in 1900 “Mable”, 4, born October 1895 in Texas, is in the Waco household of D. C. Logue and his wife Virginia A. S906; in 1910 Mabel, 14, is with Dan C. and Virginia A. Logue at Cuero S1080; in 1930 her widowed mother Virginia Logue lives with her S924 Probable confirm or correct →
- Born 31 October 1895 at Galveston, Texas, by the index of her death certificate S907; the 1900 census gives October 1895 in Texas S906
- A widow by April 1930, after Orbin’s death in September 1929 S924S911. In 1950, aged 54, she lived in Austin with her daughter Alice and son-in-law Thomas O. Caffey, a city fireman S518
- Died 13 April 1961 at Austin, Travis County, by the index of her Texas death certificate S907
- What is weak or missing: the death certificate is read from its index only, so her birth at Galveston, her death date and her father’s name have not been seen on the image; the 1900 census that puts her in the Logue household at Waco is now read from the image, and her elder sister Leola’s death certificate, read from the image, puts Leola’s own birth at Galveston in November 1892 S1113, so the family seems to have lived at Galveston in the early 1890s, between the 1890 Alabama marriage and the 1900 Waco census; FamilySearch’s birth index for her daughter calls her “Mabel Larrimore Logue”, and where the Larrimore name comes from has not been found
- 🆕 In the 1932–33 Austin city directory she is “Piland Mabel L Mrs”, a saleswoman at the F & W Grand Silver Store, rooming at 403 West 14th Street Confirmed S1091
- 🆕 Younger sister of Leola Logue Piland, born at Galveston on 28 November 1892, whose death certificate, read from the image, names the same parents, D. C. Logue and Virginia Alice S1113; the two girls are together in their parents’ household at Waco in 1900 S906 and at Cuero in 1910 S1080
- 🆕 Sister of Victor Quillen Logue, born 1902, whose marriage records name the same parents, D. C. Logue and Alice Hanby S1191

Leola Logue Piland
ProbableEvidence: Her 1938 Texas death certificate, read from the image, names her father as D. C. Logue (written Louge), born in Tennessee, and her mother as Virginia Alice, and gives her birth at Galveston on 28 November 1892; Leola is in D. C. Logue's household at Waco in 1900 and, aged 17, at Cuero in 1910, read from the images, with her sister Mabel. Weak or missing: The certificate's informant was her husband, who gives her mother's birthplace as Texas where three censuses say Tennessee; her father D. C. Logue is himself Probable; her marriage to Ruben Piland and how he was related to Mabel's husband Orbin Piland are not found. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Sister of Mabel Logue Piland · 1892–1938
- Research status: PROBABLE as a daughter of Dan Crutcher Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby Probable confirm or correct →. Evidence: her Texas death certificate, read from the image, names her father as “D. C. Louge”, born in Tennessee, and her mother as “Virginaa Alice” Confirmed S1113; she is Leola in D. C. Logue’s household at Waco in 1900 S906 and Leola, 17, with Dan C. and Virginia A. Logue at Cuero in 1910 S1080. What is weak or missing: the informant was her husband, who gives her mother’s birthplace as Texas where the censuses say Tennessee, and her father’s own identity rests partly on a Find a Grave memorial. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’ to confirm or correct it. Card added 1 October 2026
- Born 28 November 1892 at Galveston, Texas, by her death certificate S1113. Her younger sister Mabel Logue Piland was also born at Galveston, in 1895 S907, so the family seems to have lived there between the 1890 Alabama marriage S908 and the 1900 Waco census S906
- Wife of Ruben Piland, who was the informant on her death certificate S1113. Her sister Mabel married Orbin Oliver Piland; whether Ruben and Orbin were brothers or cousins has not been found
- She had lived in Austin for 20 years, on Manor Road, and was a housewife. She died at Seton Infirmary, Austin, on 12 February 1938, aged 45, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, the next day S1113
- What is weak or missing: her marriage record, any children, and Ruben Piland’s parents are not found; the certificate’s Texas birthplace for her mother conflicts with the censuses and is not followed here
- 🆕 Sister of Victor Quillen Logue, born 1902, whose marriage records name the same father, D. C. Logue S1191 S1192

ProbableEvidence: In 1930 at Austin, read from the image, Virginia Logue, 62, widowed, born in Tennessee, lives with her daughter Mable Piland as Mable's mother; in 1900 at Waco, read from the image, Virginia A., born July 1867 in Tennessee, is the wife of D. C. Logue with their daughter Mable, born October 1895; the Calhoun County, Alabama, marriage register, read from the image, records the marriage of D. C. Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby on 2 April 1890; in 1910 she is at Cuero with Dan C. Logue and Mabel, 14, and in 1920 in Grayson County with him; in April 1950, read from the image, Virginia Logue, 81, widowed, born in Tennessee, is at Howe, Grayson County, as the mother-in-law of Harry R. Lewis, whose wife Ethel was born in Alabama about 1891. Weak or missing: The Hamby family has not been researched, so her parents are not found; her death is not found, though the 1950 census shows her alive; the 1930 census calls her a widow, which does not fit the 1939 death Find a Grave gives her husband; no record read here names her daughter Ethel as a Logue. In January 1920 she was 51, in Grayson County, Texas, with her husband, entered as “Doctor C.” Logue, 60, of the cotton mill S1081. added 30 September 2026

- 🆕 On 10 April 1950 she was living at Howe, Grayson County, Texas, as Virginia Logue, 81, widowed, born in Tennessee, the mother-in-law of the head, Harry R. James P. Montgomery
ConfirmedFather of Virginia Francis Montgomery · c.1834–before 1900
- Research status: CONFIRMED as the father of Virginia Francis “Jennie” Montgomery, and added to the tree on Earl’s approval of 2 October 2026. Her own death certificate, read from the image, names her father as James Montgomery S1183; in 1880 the census, read from the image, lists Virginia, 21, as the daughter of James P. Montgomery, 47 S1095. Added 2 October 2026
- Born about 1833–35 in Tennessee, by his ages in three censuses; in 1880 he gives both his parents’ birthplace as North Carolina S1093 S1094 S1095
- A stock hunter and farmer in DeWitt County, Texas: in 1860 “James Mongumay”, 25, stock hunter, with Elenor F., 23, Matilda E., 4, Harvey A., 2, and Virginia F., 2 S1093; in 1870 Jas. Montgomery, 37, farmer, near Clinton, with Ellen and the twins Harvey and Virginia, 11 S1094; in 1880 James P., 47, with Elenor, 45, and nine children S1095
- Husband of Elenor Frances Bradford: the Coffee County, Tennessee, marriage register, read from the image, has “James Montgomery Licence to Marry Ellen Bradford” on 4 April 1855, married the same day S1200 S1185. Their first child, Matilda, was born in Texas about 1856
- Two more of his children’s death certificates, now read from the images, name him as James P. Montgomery: Lula Gay Piland’s of 1949, born 15 August 1871 in DeWitt County, which gives both her parents, James P. Montgomery and Elenore Frances Bradford, as born in Tennessee S1198 S1188; and James L. Montgomery’s, who died at Victoria on 8 February 1932 S1199 S1190
- His children in the censuses: Matilda E. (1860), the twins Harvey (Harry) Alex and Virginia, Mary, James L., Idella, the twins Louisa and Eliza, and Ida (1880) S1093 S1095, with Lula Gay from her own death certificate S1198; in 1900 Ellen is the mother of nine, all living S1184
- Died before June 1900, when his wife Ellen is a widow in Gonzales County S1184. Find a Grave places his grave and Ellen’s at Sample, Gonzales County S1201
- Open question: his own parents. In 1850 a James P. Montgomery, 13, born Georgia, lives with John Montgomery, 38, and Sarah, 36, in Forsyth County, Georgia S1202. They could be his parents, but every later record, his own censuses and Lula’s death certificate, says he was born in Tennessee, so they are held, not added Probable confirm or correct →
- What is weak or missing: no record of his birth or death has been found, and his parents are not known. Find a Grave gives born 23 April 1836 and died May 1887, but its own index disagrees on the day of death, so those dates are not used here; the initial P. comes from the 1880 census and two of his children’s death indexes

Elenor Frances Bradford
ProbableEvidence: Elenor F. is the wife of James P. Montgomery in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 DeWitt County censuses that hold Virginia, all read from the images; four of her other children's Texas death certificates, each with a different informant, name a Bradford mother (Ellen Bradford twice, Elenore Frances Bradford, Mary Ellen Bradford); in 1900, read from the image, Ellen Montgomery, born March 1836 in Tennessee, is a widow in Gonzales County, mother of nine children, all living. Weak or missing: No document read names her as Virginia's mother: Virginia's own death certificate gives the mother as "don't know", and the 1880 relationship column is to the head of the house; three of the four death certificates are read from indexes only (Lula's is now read from the image); the 1855 Coffee County marriage register does not name her parents; her death has not been found in a record. Probable mother of Virginia Francis Montgomery · born 1836
- Research status: PROBABLE (strong), the verdict of the potential-parents review, and added to the tree on Earl’s approval of 2 October 2026. Elenor F. is the wife of James P. Montgomery in every census that holds Virginia: 1860 S1093, 1870 as Ellen S1094 and 1880 S1095, all read from the images. Added 2 October 2026
- Probable mother of Virginia Francis “Jennie” Montgomery Probable confirm or correct →: Virginia’s own death certificate, read from the image, gives her mother’s maiden name as “don’t know” S1183, so the link rests on the three censuses and on her brothers’ and sisters’ records below
- Wife of James P. Montgomery; the Coffee County, Tennessee, marriage register, read from the image, has James Montgomery licensed to marry Ellen Bradford on 4 April 1855 and married the same day S1200 S1185
- Bradford: four of her other children’s Texas death certificates, each with a different informant, name a Bradford mother: Harry Alexander Montgomery (1931), Virginia’s twin, “Ellen Bradford” S1186; Matilda Evlin Henry (1931), “Ellen Bradford” S1187; Lula Gay Piland (1949), “Elenore Frances Bradford” S1188; and Mary E. Baker (1942), “Mary Ellen Bradford” S1189. Lula’s certificate is now read from the image too: mother’s maiden name “Elenore Frances Bradford”, born Tennessee S1198; the other three are read from FamilySearch’s index only
- Born March 1836 in Tennessee, by the 1900 census, read from the image: Ellen Montgomery, 64, a widow in Precinct 5, Gonzales County, mother of nine children, all nine living S1184
- Buried at Sample, Gonzales County, by Find a Grave, which gives her dates as 28 March 1837 to 23 January 1905; those dates are not used here S1201
- What is weak or missing: no document read names her as Virginia’s mother in words; the 1855 marriage register does not name her parents; her death has not been found in a record

Victor Quillen Logue
ConfirmedBrother of Mabel Logue Piland · 1902–1978
- Research status: CONFIRMED son of Dan Crutcher Logue and Virginia Alice Hamby, and added to the tree on Earl’s approval of 2 October 2026. Two Los Angeles marriage records name his father as D. C. Logue: in 1926 with his mother as Alice Hanby S1191, and in 1933 S1192. Added 2 October 2026
- Born 26 September 1902, by his two Second World War draft registrations, which give his birthplace as Atlanta, Georgia S1193 S1194; the 1940 census gives Texas, about 1903 S1195. The conflict is not resolved, and the tree leaves his birthplace blank
- Married Mildred Warner Pool at Los Angeles on 4 December 1926 S1191, and Ethel P. Williams at Los Angeles on 26 August 1933, where his mother is entered as “Alice West”, a name not yet explained S1192
- In 1940 he lived in El Monte Judicial Township, Los Angeles County, with Ethel P. S1195; in 1942 he named D. C. Logue as his contact S1193, and in 1945 he registered at El Monte S1194
- Died 27 August 1978 in Arkansas and buried at Concord, Cleburne County, Arkansas, by his Find a Grave memorial, which gives the same birth date, 26 September 1902; the Social Security Death Index has a Victor Logue born that day who died in August 1978, last residence Arkansas S1206 Probable confirm or correct →. The evidence is the exact birth date on a rare name; what is weak is that both are indexes, and no record yet explains the move from El Monte to Arkansas
- Brother of Mabel Logue Piland and Leola Logue Piland
- What is weak or missing: every record here is read from FamilySearch’s index, not the image; his birthplace is Georgia on the draft cards and Texas in 1940; his death rests on Find a Grave and the Social Security index, with no death certificate or obituary read

ConfirmedSister of Virginia Francis Montgomery · 1871–1949
- Research status: CONFIRMED as a daughter of James P. Montgomery and Elenor Frances Bradford, and added to the tree on Earl’s approval of 2 October 2026. Her Texas death certificate, read from the image, gives her father as James P. Montgomery and her mother’s maiden name as Elenore Frances Bradford, both born in Tennessee S1198 S1188. Added 2 October 2026
- Born 15 August 1871 in DeWitt County, Texas S1198

- Died in 1949 at Buda, Hays County, Texas, as Lula Gay Piland S1198
- What is weak or missing: she is not under the name Lula in the 1880 census; her husband is not named here, and her marriage record has not been read

James L. Montgomery
ConfirmedBrother of Virginia Francis Montgomery · 1866–1932
- Research status: CONFIRMED as a son of James P. Montgomery, and added to the tree on Earl’s approval of 2 October 2026. His Texas death certificate, read from the image, names his father as James P. Montgomery S1199 S1190; in 1880 a James L. is among James P. Montgomery’s children in DeWitt County S1095. Added 2 October 2026
- Born 28 December 1866 in Texas S1199
- Brother of Virginia Francis “Jennie” Montgomery
- Died at Victoria, Texas, on 8 February 1932 S1199
- What is weak or missing: his death certificate names only his father, and the father’s birthplace line is partly cut off; his mother is presumed to be Elenor from the 1880 household but is not named on any record of his own. The 1870 household has a La Fayette, 4, and no James, so whether “L.” stands for Lafayette is an open question S1094
