How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Life in the order the records give it
Birth1864
Born
19 October 1864, Alabama; her father
Robert Higginbotham (written “Higginbothan”), her mother's maiden name
Avery S331Death1953
Died
3 January 1953 at Lolita, Jackson County, Texas, widowed, as Nancy Jane Walker
S331Cause1952
Cause of death, as the certificate states it:
carcinoma of the jaw, of one year's duration. She was attended from June 1952 by a doctor at Edna, died at home, and was buried at
Lolita Cemetery the next day
S331Census1870
🆕 The 1870 census image, read in full: in Township 19 (Rockdale Beat), Randolph County, Alabama, on 10 June 1870, Nancy, 6, born Alabama, was in the household of
Lucinda Higginbotham, 40, born South Carolina, with Alexander, 13, and Benjamin, 12
Confirmed S960. That census states no relationships. Her mother is named by the 1880 census
S812. added 29 September 2026
Family parents, marriages, children, siblings
Parents1880
🆕 Her mother: in the 1880 census of Rockdale Beat, Randolph County, Alabama, “N. J.”, 15, born in Alabama, is listed as the daughter of the widowed head,
L. Higginbotham, about 50, born in South Carolina
S812. With the certificate's maiden name Avery, that makes her mother L. (Avery) Higginbotham. Her given name,
Lucinda C., comes from FamilySearch indexes of the 1870 and 1860 Randolph County censuses, which are independent of the 1880 page and the certificate
S841S842: her mother is
Lucinda C. (Avery) Higginbotham Confirmed. The 1860 and 1870 entries are index rows whose images have not been read, and the 1860 index gives Lucinda's husband as Wm H. Higginbotham, while Nancy Jane's certificate names her father Robert, so her father is not settled. Added 28 September 2026.
Children1950
Mother of
Daniel Jonah Walker: in 1950 at Lolita, Jackson County, Texas, she lived in D. J. Walker's household as his mother, 85, widowed, born Alabama
S210Marriage1857
🆕 Her husband was probably
William B. “Willie B.” Walker (1857–1914)
Probable confirm or correct →.
Evidence: in 1900 “Nancy J.”, 35, born Alabama, was his wife in Jackson County
S808, and his 1914 death certificate was informed by Mrs. W. B. Walker
S787.
What is weak: no marriage record has been found. His parents were probably
Daniel Green Walker and Mary Jane Bross. Added 27 September 2026
Open questions what is probable, weak or missing — confirm or correct it
Probable
🆕 Probably her in 1930:
Nancy J. “Waeker”, 65, a widow living alone in her own home ($1,250) in Justice Precinct 2, Jackson County, Texas
Probable confirm or correct → S1011. Evidence: her age, her Alabama birthplace and her mother's South Carolina birthplace agree with the 1880 household
S812, and Jackson County is where she lived in 1950 and her last years
S331. Weak: the enumerator wrote the surname Waeker or Wacker, not Walker; her father's Georgia birthplace is new and is a clue only. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026

Generation 5 — great-great-grandparents
- S2101950 U.S. Federal Census — D. J. Walker household, Lolita, Jackson County, Texas. Ancestry record 186702072; ED 120-15, sheet 3. Read from the image at full resolution, 22 September 2026. D. J. Walker, 60, farmer, and Ida, 57, both born Texas; his mother Nancy Walker, 85, widowed, born Alabama. 🔑 A second wife, Ida, and his mother Nancy (c.1865). Nettie is not in the household; when and how the first marriage ended is not settled.
- S331Texas death certificate no. 3466 — Nancy Jane Walker, 1953. Texas, U.S., Death Certificates, 1903–1982 (Ancestry collection 2272, record 21787116), Jackson County. Read from the image. Born 19 October 1864, Alabama; died 3 January 1953, Lolita; widowed; father Robert Higginbothan; mother's maiden name Avery; cause of death carcinoma of the jaw, one year; buried Lolita Cemetery. The certificate image is in the Documents grid.
- S787Texas death certificate 12730: Willie Bernard Walker, died Lolita, Jackson County, 27 June 1914. Ancestry record 21516133. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 26 September 2026. Confirmed Willie Bernard Walker, farmer, born 11 April 1857 at Columbia, California (his age, 57 years 2 months 16 days, agrees), died 27 June 1914 of pellagra, asthma contributing; buried in Lolita Cemetery on 28 June. Parents given as Daniel Walker and Mary J. Brass (or Bross), born Alabama. Informant: Mrs. W. B. Walker. 🆕 The Texas death index agrees: “Walker, Willie Bernard”, Jackson County, 27 June 1914, certificate 12730 (Ancestry record 6333149, read 27 September 2026); it has no birthplace column. Corrects the tree's 10 April 1858. It is the first record to name his parents; that he is Daniel Jonah Walker's father is still probable (S406). Collection: Texas, U.S., Death Certificates.
- S8081900 U.S. census — Justice Precinct 2, Jackson County, Texas, sheet 16, dwelling 296: Willie B. Walker household. Ancestry record 43657783. Image examined, read 27 September 2026 (ED 59, sheets 16A–16B, lines 47–53). Probable Willie B. Walker, head, born April 1858, 42, born California, both parents born Alabama; a farmer owning a mortgaged farm; Nancy J., wife, 35, born Alabama; Neomi, 13; Robert, 12; Jackson J., 10, born March 1890; Ruth E., 2; and, on line 53, Mary J. Daniels, “Mother”, born June 1830, 69, widowed, mother of three children, born Alabama, her parents born South Carolina. Mary J. Daniels is taken as Mary Jane (Bross) Walker, remarried after Daniel Green Walker died: the 1880 “Mary Dannels” of Angelina County, with her son Edgar (S809). Her Alabama birth matches the birthplace given for Willie's mother, not Nancy J.'s (whose mother was born in South Carolina). Jackson J.'s birth month and year, from the index, are Daniel Jonah Walker's (10 March 1890), but the given name does not match. Collection: 1900 United States Federal Census.
- S8121880 U.S. Federal Census — Rockdale Beat no. 3, Randolph County, Alabama, supervisor's district 2, enumeration district 107, p. 2, dwelling 13, family 15, enumerated 1 June 1880. Ancestry collection 6742, record 5680052 (image 4239790-00651). Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Confirmed L. Higginbotham, white, female, 50 or 51, widowed, housekeeper, born South Carolina, parents born South Carolina; N. J. Higginbotham, daughter, 15, born Alabama, father born Georgia, mother born South Carolina. Collection: 1880 United States Federal Census.
- S8411870 U.S. census — Randolph County, Alabama: Lucinda Higgenbotham household. FamilySearch record 1:1:MHKY-PVD (United States Census, 1870). Index entry only — no image was examined, read 28 September 2026. Confirmed Lucinda Higgenbotham, born about 1830, South Carolina, head, with Alexander, Benjamin and Nancy. Independent of the 1880 page (S812) and of Nancy Jane Walker's 1953 certificate (S331); it supplies her given name. Index transcription; the page image has not been read.
- S8421860 U.S. census — Northern Division, Randolph County, Alabama, post office Rockdale, page 9, 7 June 1860, dwelling 65: Wm H. Higginbotham household. Ancestry record 17637278. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 28 September 2026; first cited from FamilySearch record 1:1:MHDP-67X. Confirmed Lucinda C., 30, seamstress, born South Carolina, in the household of Wm H. Higginbotham, 35, farmer, born Georgia, with J. F. M., 12, born South Carolina, and C. C., 10, R. L., 8, Alexr, 7, B. D., 3, and E. H., 1, born Alabama. Independent of S812 and S331. The census states no relationships, so Wm H. as her husband is probable, not stated; Nancy Jane's certificate names her father Robert, not William, so this page does not settle her father.
- S9601870 United States Federal Census — Township 19 (Rockdale Beat no. 3), Randolph County, Alabama, page 12, lines 9–14 (10 June 1870; post office Wedowee). Ancestry record 12853331. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 24 September 2026. Confirmed Dwelling 87: Higginbotham, Lucinda, 40, keeping house, personal estate $300, born South Carolina; Alexander, 13; Benjamin, 12; and Nancy, 6. The children were born in Alabama. Dwelling 88, next door: a Higginbotham, 21, farmer, born South Carolina (the given name reads "Gilber"), and a woman of 20 (given name unclear), born Alabama. The 1870 census has no relationship column. Nancy's mother rests on the 1880 census (S812), where N. J. is L. Higginbotham's daughter; this image is the census page behind the index entry at S841. Collection: 1870 United States Federal Census.
- S10111930 United States Federal Census — Jackson County, Texas, Justice Precinct 2, ED 120-5, sheet 5A, dwelling 101 (14 April 1930). Ancestry record 62694222. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 29 September 2026. Probable Nancy J. Waeker (or Wacker), head, widow, 65, owns her home ($1,250), born Alabama; father born Georgia, mother born South Carolina. She lived alone. The surname is written Waeker or Wacker, not Walker. Identity rests on her age, birthplace, her mother's birthplace and the county.
