Research status

Research status: PROBABLE for her maiden name, Kerr; that she is Mary, wife of Alfred Gregg and mother of Edward Gregg, is Confirmed. Evidence: Edward’s entry in the 1905 Pittsburgh death register names his mother as Mary Gregg, born in Greene County, Pennsylvania S927; she is Mary, 45, in Alfred Gregg’s household in Cumberland Township in 1850 S928, and Mary Gregg, 65, keeping house at Carmichaels in June 1870 with Augustus E., 20, a carpenter S1034. The name Kerr comes from one source: Edward’s obituary in the Waynesburg Republican of 28 September 1905, which calls his parents “Alfred and Mary Kerr Gregg” S1660. Added to the family tree on 10 October 2026

Evidence: Edward Gregg’s 1905 death register entry names his mother as Mary Gregg (S927) and she is Mary, 45, in Alfred Gregg’s 1850 household (S928); his 1905 obituary calls his parents “Alfred and Mary Kerr Gregg” (S1660). Weak or missing: The maiden name Kerr rests on that one phrase, read from machine-read page text and not the page image; no marriage record or record of her own gives it, and her death has not been read. Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: Kerr rests on that one phrase, read from machine-read page text and not from the page image; no marriage record, and no record of her own, gives her maiden name. Her birth, about 1805, is worked out from her census ages. Her parents are not known. No record of her death has been read, so no death is given. Her marriage record, or a death record naming her father, would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
