How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: CONFIRMED (index) — added 24 September 2026 from an index record that names her father; entered in the family tree the same day.
Life in the order the records give it
Birth1851
Born
15 July 1851, Tennessee; the Mariah, 8, of her father's household in 1860
S206Death1933
Died 13 July 1933, Sumner County, Tennessee
Census1910
🆕 In 1910, as
Mariah Louise Barry, 58 and widowed, she owned her farm free of mortgage in the 2nd Civil District of Sumner County, with her daughters Mamie, 27, and Jessie May, 24; she had borne 5 children, 2 of them living
S586. added 25 September 2026.
Death1933
🆕 Her death certificate, as
Mrs Maria Louise Barry, died 13 July 1933 in the 2nd Civil District of Sumner County, gives her birth as
15 July 1851 in Tennessee and names her father
David Chenault and her mother, maiden name
Quinesberry, both born in Kentucky
Confirmed S961. She was buried in the Barry graveyard. added 29 September 2026
Census1920
🆕 In January 1920 she was still head of her own farm, owned free, in the 2nd Civil District of Sumner County:
Mariah Barry, 68, widowed, with her daughter Jessie, 33, and her grandchildren Louise Barry Cecil and Roy Barry Cecil
Confirmed S1064. added 29 September 2026
Census1880
🆕 In June 1880
Mariah, 28, was keeping house in the Second District of Sumner County with her husband, entered as B. P. Barry, 33, a farmer, and their sons
Albert, 4, and
Wallace, 1
Confirmed S1163. In June 1900, widowed and 48, she owned her farm free in the 2nd Civil District, born in
July 1852 by that census, mother of five children, two living, with her daughters Jessie May and [Hannie?]
Confirmed S1164. Her given name is partly illegible on the 1900 page; Albert and Wallace are not in the house by then.
Family parents, marriages, children, siblings
Marriage1875
Married
Benjamin C. Barry, licence 9 August 1875, Sumner County
S554Parents1850
🆕 Her mother: probably
Louisa Quisenberry Chenault Probable confirm or correct →, David's only wife seen from 1850 to 1880. In 1870 “Mima L.”, 18, is in David and Louisa Chenault's household at Castalian Springs
S397, as Mariah, 8, was in 1860
S206. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: the censuses state no relationships, “Mima L.” is not plainly “Maria L.”, and her 1933 death certificate gives her mother only by the maiden name “Quinesberry”, from an informant
S961. added 28 September 2026.

The husband’s second initial reads P but could be C; the 1875 licence (S554) has Benjamin C. Barry. Mariah’s parents are entered as born in Tennessee, where her other records say Kentucky.
- S11641900 U.S. census, 2nd Civil District, Sumner County, Tennessee, SD 4, ED 104, sheet 13A, lines 38–40, dwelling 220 (June 1900). Ancestry record 61297909. Confirmed Barry, Ma[riah?], head, born July 1852, 48, widowed, mother of 5 children, 2 living, born Tennessee, both parents born Kentucky; owns her farm free; with her daughters [Hannie?], born about 1887, at school, and Jessie May, born May 1886. Her given name is partly illegible (indexed Martha); only ‘Ma’ is certain. The identification rests on the July birth month, the widowed Barry farm in the same district, the Kentucky-born parents and Jessie May, who is with her again in 1910 (S586). The younger daughter’s name could also be read Wallie or Nannie.
