How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not. The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on 13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information rather than lacking it.
Attested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
Strongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field, or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Searched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Supplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands apart from the three record tags above S24.
Biological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond: no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document was read for it S46.
The person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages, places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
A branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Evidence: The Social Security Numident index gives her birth on 16 June 1920 at Salado, Bell County, her death on 8 July 2003, and her parents as James C Caffey and Ebben L Owens; the 1930 census index has Lola P., 9, a daughter in J. C. Caffey's household in Travis County; the Social Security Death Index and the Find a Grave index give the same dates, with burial at Garfield; her brother Woodrow's 1987 obituary names a sister Lola Pearl Leach of Austin (S1712). Weak or missing: Every record is read from an index, none from an image; the Numident index enters her under the surname Schmidt, which is unexplained; Manchaca is her last residence, used as the place of death; no marriage record has been searched. - S1712Obituary — Woodrow W. Caffey, Bastrop, Texas, died 1 January 1987. Austin American-Statesman, Saturday 3 January 1987, p. 34 (Newspapers.com image 358782147); repeated as a paid notice on 4 January, p. 24 (image 363663279), and in the death list of 5 January, p. 11 (image 358787977). Read from the newspaper text on 4 October 2026. Confirmed Woodrow W. Caffey, 69, of Bastrop, formerly of Austin, died Thursday evening; retired construction superintendent, Methodist, U.S. Army veteran of the Second World War; he and his wife, Irene Etheridge Caffey, “would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 3, 1987”; survived by his wife, a son and three daughters, three brothers (Kirk Caffey of Del Rio, Harold Caffey and Carroll Caffey of Austin) and two sisters (Dorothy Hibler and Lola Pearl Leach of Austin); preceded in death by one son and four grandsons; funeral Monday at Hyltin-Manor Funeral Chapel, the Rev. C. D. Etheridge officiating; interment at Haynie Chapel Cemetery, Garfield. Read as text only: no page image is saved or shown. The obituary does not name his parents. “Harold” is the brother carded as Harrol B. Caffey; “Kirk” matches no census name and is very probably Carey Clabourn Caffey of Del Rio (S1713). The paid notice of 4 January calls him “of Austin”. The children are not named here because they may be living. Entered on 11 October 2026.
- S1714Indexes — Lola Pearl Caffey Leach, born Salado, Bell County, Texas, 16 June 1920; died 8 July 2003. Probable The Numident names her father as James C Caffey and her mother as “Ebben L Owens”, with birth at Salado on 16 June 1920 and death on 8 July 2003; the death index gives her last residence as Manchaca, Travis County; Find a Grave gives burial at Garfield, Travis County. Indexes only. The Numident enters her as Lola Pearl Schmidt; the surname is unexplained. Her husband and children are not named here because they may be living. Entered on 11 October 2026.
