How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Life in the order the records give it
Birth1854
Born
November 1854, West Virginia S90S92Birth1860
🆕 A likely childhood household: in 1860
H. S. L. Roberts, 5, born Ohio, was in a Roberts household at Martinsville (Martins Ferry), Belmont County, Ohio
Probable confirm or correct → S1049. Evidence: the initials and age fit a November 1854 birth, and the family is just across the river from Wheeling. Weak: the census states no relationships and no document names his parents, so none are published here. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026

- S90Ohio Births and Christenings Index, 1774–1973 — Annie Roberts (Anna Blanche), b. 10 Nov 1892 (christening), Bellaire, Belmont, Ohio; father Henry Roberts, mother Rose Williams. FHL Film 902141. Ancestry collection 2541, record 2773008. The record that identifies both parents by name. Maiden name Williams confirmed independently by the CA Death Index (S91).
- S91California Death Index, 1940–1997 — Anna Blanche Proeger [Roberts], b. 16 Sep 1890, Ohio; d. 15 Aug 1942, Los Angeles. Mother's maiden name: Williams. Father's surname: Roberts. Ancestry collection 5180, record 5930981. Independently confirms the mother's maiden name from S90. Birth year 1890 vs 1892: the 1900 census supports Sep 1892; the death index is a secondary source for birth date.
- S921900 US Federal Census — Henry Roberts household, Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. Henry Roberts, 45, Head, b. Nov 1854, West Virginia, Glass Blower, married 25 years; Rose A Roberts, 45, Wife; Etta, 19; Florence, 17; Sam, 15; Thomas, 13. Henry's parents both b. Ohio. NARA T623, Roll 1769, Page 10, ED 0125. Ancestry collection 7602, record 62778072. Image examined, read 24 September 2026: 1590 Warren St.; Rose A. born Nov 1854, W. Va., both her parents b. Ohio, mother of 13 children, 7 living; Etta b. Feb 1881, Florence Feb 1883, Sam Mar 1885, Thomas May 1887. Anna Blanche is not in this household. Only four of Rose's seven living children are at home, so a daughter of seven living elsewhere is consistent with her own count. Siblings Etta (Henrietta), Florence, Sam, and Thomas confirmed.
- S3521940 U.S. Federal Census — Harry Roberts household, Boyd Ave., Lansing, Pease Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio. Ancestry record 38067602. Image examined, read 24 September 2026. Confirmed Harry Roberts, 50, b. Ohio, laborer at a glass company, renting at $7 a month; wife Amelia, 45, b. W. Va.; daughters Etta Mae, Amelia, Lora and Shirley, and a married daughter, Catherine Rose, with her three small daughters. Identity: his age fits the 19 May 1889 Bellaire birth, he worked in his father's glass trade in the same county, and he named a daughter Etta after his eldest sister. The index's “760” is the rent, written 7.00.
- S10491860 United States Federal Census — Martinsville (Martins Ferry), Pease Township, Belmont County, Ohio, page 107, dwelling 777. Ancestry record 43664618. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 29 September 2026. Probable 28 July 1860: a Roberts household, the head a laborer of 31 born Ohio, with his wife, 31, and children Margaret 12, Ephalinda 9, Rachel H. 7, H. S. L. Roberts, 5, and Mary C. 2, all born Ohio. A candidate childhood household only: the boy’s initials and age fit Henry S. Roberts (b. November 1854), but the census states no relationships and no document yet names his parents, so the adults are not published here as his parents.
