The record in detail

Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Evidence: Two Fairfax grants of 22 and 23 March 1779 call Martin Cofman 'Heir at Law of David Cofman decd.', a 1783 deed calls him David's 'Eldest son & Heir at Law', and David's widow swore to it on 22 March 1779, all read from the images; David bought 200 acres on the Hawksbill in May 1741 and was 'of Augusta County' in 1751. A Y-37 test on Martin's male line falls in the FTDNA Kauffman project's group for the 1726 immigrant Michael Kauffman of Massanutten. Weak or missing: No single record joins the heir of David to the Martin whose 1809 will names Samuel; no will, estate or death date for David is found; no record seen names his father: that he was a son of the 1726 immigrant Michael rests on that Y-DNA, the 1749 will and bond and a 2020 secondary article not yet seen. The 'Pioneer Michael' (d. 1717) parentage is contradicted by Michael's 1737 patent and John Coffman's heirs of 1759. That he is the David Kauffman of the 1749 Massanutten will and bond is Possible, and the Y-DNA rests on one 37-marker test. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Life

Census1741
In May 1741 he bought 200 acres on the Hawksbill from Henry Crum, in what was then Orange County, Virginia, paying in Pennsylvania money S1348. The deed calls him “David Coffman of ye County afsd”, already living in Orange County and in possession S1389
Census1751
In 1751 “David Coffman of Augusta County” asked for a warrant for about 400 more acres joining his own land on Dry Run and the Hawksbill S1347; George Hume surveyed it for him on 18 April 1751. The survey was forfeited for want of payment and granted to Martin, as David's heir, in 1779 S1345
Death1779
He died before 22 March 1779. No will, administration or inventory for him has been found. His widow had married again by 1779 and had eight children by her second husband, so he probably died years earlier, perhaps about 1751–1765. That is an inference, not a record
Death1779
His widow was Nancy, by 1779 the wife of Henry Hershberger S1349
Record2026
History of this card. 5 Oct 2026
the Y-DNA note (S1390) first gave the genetic distance as 2 of 37 and the line as Michael Kauffman d. 1717; corrected to 1 of 37 and the project’s 1726 immigrant Michael group. 13 Oct 2026 — three notes, the Research status line among them, carried “Added 5 October 2026” in mid-text; the words were taken out, nothing else changed.

Family

Parents1940
His origin in Europe: UNSUPPORTED. No record found names his birthplace or ship. Online trees and the 1940 family book make him a son of Michael Coffman (d. 1717) of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and Anna Kneissle; that is contradicted, not just unproven: the 1737 patent for that Michael’s land names his children as John and Elizabeth only S1351, and John’s heirs in 1759 include no David S1391. Online trees also put the family at Steffisburg, Bern, in Switzerland; the Y-DNA contradicts that, because the project’s Steffisburg group is genetically unrelated to this line S1390. This line’s cluster (R-L188) is German. Project members near it report Friesenheim (near Neustadt), Daisbach and Schwarzenberg; those places are POSSIBLE only, self-reported and unverified

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Research status: PROBABLE (strong) as Martin Coffman's father. Two Fairfax grants of March 1779 make Martin “Heir at Law of David Cofman decd.” S1345S1346, a deed of 1783 makes him “Eldest son & Heir at Law” S1344, and David's widow swore to it S1349. What is weak or missing: no record yet joins that Martin to the Martin who made the 1809 will, and none names David's birth or death. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Open question
confirm or correct → The Massanutten congregation, 1749: POSSIBLE (strong) that this is our David. On 17 May 1749 a David Kauffman witnessed the German will of Martin Kauffman, the Massanutten settler, in Augusta County S1387, and signed the £500 administration bond with the widow Barbara and Michael Kauffman S1388. The will asks that “my brethren shall be her bondsmen, the appraisors shall be out of the brotherhood”: church language, which puts that David in the Massanutten Mennonite congregation, whose founders came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about 1730. For: the same name, an adult freeholder, Augusta County (where our David lived in 1751 S1347), the Massanutten–Hawksbill neighbourhood, Pennsylvania money, and an eldest son named Martin. The only other David Kauffman of that circle, a son of the 1749 Martin, was then a child. Our David was already “of the County aforesaid” (Orange) when he bought from Crum in May 1741 S1389, read from the image. What is weak or missing: the bond gives no residence for David, Kauffman is a common Mennonite surname, and the will does not make David a brother or son of Martin. Martin’s eldest son was under age, so David was not his son. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Y-DNA and parentage: PROBABLE that David was a son of Michael Kauffman, the Pennsylvania immigrant of about 1726 who settled at Massanutten and died about 1734, and so a brother of the Martin Kauffman who died in Augusta County in 1749 and of Michael Kauffman (1714–1788), the Linville Creek Mennonite preacher. The male line: a descendant in the male line of Martin Coffman of the Hawksbill tested 37 markers in the FTDNA Kauffman project. The project places that kit in its group headed “1726 immigrant Michael, previously KFM” (R-L188 > FGC41021), and it is a genetic distance of 1 of 37 from the group’s Big Y-700 kit S1390. That the male line belongs to this group is Probable. The parentage: the 1749 will of Martin Kauffman asks that “my brethren” be the widow’s bondsmen, and David and Michael Kauffman signed the bond S1387S1388; the 1754 grant to Michael Coffman for Martin’s orphans lies on the north side of Dry Run S1393, where David asked for land in 1751 S1347; and a 2020 study counts David (d. 1779) among the 1726 immigrant’s sons S1392. What is weak or missing: no record seen names David’s father; the parentage rests on a 2020 secondary article (D. Martin, Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage) that has not been seen; “brethren” can mean fellow church members; and that kit has only 37 markers and no SNP test. Next: that article and the records behind it, and a Big Y-700 upgrade on that kit. Corrected 5 Oct 2026: an earlier version of this entry said Michael Kauffman d. 1717 of Lancaster County was the male line. The project’s own heading for this group is the 1726 immigrant; the d. 1717 Michael’s children were John and Elizabeth S1351, and John’s heirs in 1759 include no David S1391. Know more? Evidence: On 22 March 1779, read from the image, Nancy Harshbarger affirmed that Martin Cofman was the true heir of David Cofman deceased and gave up her thirds of the land; the docket calls it the widow's dower relinquished. Weak or missing: She is David's widow only by that dower release; no record calls Martin her son, so she is only possibly his mother; her maiden name, birth and death are not found. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →

Life

Probable confirm or correct → Research status: PROBABLE as the widow of David Coffman. On 22 March 1779 she “affirmed that Martin Cofman is the true heir of David Cofman Deceased” and gave up “her thirds of all the Land”; the docket calls this “the Widows Dower relinquished” S1349. A widow's thirds are her dower, so she was David's widow.

Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. The DAR Lineage Book entry for Miss Lilla May Duncan (no. 112604) gives the line “James Quisenberry m. 1776 Jane Burris (1759–1811). Thomas Burris m. Frances Tandy”, Thomas a sergeant in the 3rd Virginia regiment who died in Virginia in 1789 S751. Thomas Burrus's own will of 1788 names his wife Frances, a son William Tandy and a daughter Frances Tandy Bush, besides “my daughter Jane Quisenberry” S645. A 1940 SAR application by another Burrus descendant, Ollie Ezekiel Reed, was read too, but the image is only its cover and references sheet S856. What is weak: only compiled lineage books give her maiden name as Tandy; the will names Thomas's wife Frances without a surname and does not say she was Jane's mother; FamilySearch has no independent record.
Show detailsHide details

Evidence: DAR Lineage Book no. 112604 names Frances Tandy as Thomas Burris's wife in Jane Burris's numbered line, and Thomas Burrus's 1788 will names his wife Frances, a son William Tandy and a daughter Frances Tandy Bush. Weak or missing: Only compiled lineage books give her maiden name; the will gives no surname and does not say Frances was Jane's mother, and no original record has been found. Not yet confirmed. Her birth and death dates, and the middle name some online trees give her, are not in any record read and are not used here
Death2026
The DAR's Genealogical Research System, searched directly on 8 October 2026, lists her husband as Thomas Burroughs, ancestor A019240: born about 1722 in Norfolk County, died before 23 March 1789 in Orange County, Virginia, wife Frances Tandy, with their daughter Jane, wife of James Quisenberry, on more than twenty approved applications S1608. The death date is the day his will was proved S645. It conflicts with the Lineage Book on his service: the DAR now credits him only with patriotic service, for material aid, and lists the corporal of the 3rd, 4th and 7th Virginia regiments as a different Thomas Burroughs (A073815), who died about 1798 in Surry County, North Carolina. So the “sergeant in the 3rd Virginia regiment” of the 1914 entry is probably the other man and is not used. The DAR names no parents for Frances: neither Henry Tandy (A112656) nor William Tandy (A112662) has a daughter Frances married to a Burris in its files. This is the DAR's own database of approved applications, a compiled lineage, so nothing here is graded above Probable on it alone. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.

Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. DAR Lineage Book no. 141325 (Mrs. Electra Helm Withers) descends from “Lieut. He was born in Fluvanna County, Va.; died in Clark County, Ky.” S500. The 1915 SAR supplemental on no. 27139 names Rachel's parents as John Martin (1746–1830) and Rachel Pierce S764. A FamilySearch index of Virginia christenings has a Rachel Martin born 22 August 1768 and christened 15 October 1768 in St James Northam Parish, Goochland County, daughter of John Martin and Rachel Pace S857. What is weak: the books are compiled and the christening is an index with no image; no will, deed or register names our Rachel as John's daughter; the 1768 child matches her only by name, parish and date; and the books call the mother Pierce where the christening says Pace.

A John Martin married Rachel Peace or Pace in the same parish on 3 January 1757, by an index of a printed register S858. The Pace family book also names her Rachel Pace and gives the same 22 August 1768 birth S749. What is weak: both records are indexes with no image read; the 1768 child is matched to our Rachel only by name, parish and date (her age of 93 in 1860 points to 1767); and the SAR supplemental and DAR no. 141325 call the mother Rachel Pierce S764S500. The Gerabronn baptism register for 1743 names the mother of Maria Margaretha, daughter of Johann Adam Scheuermann, as his wife Margaretha, the clerk striking out “Maria” and writing “Eva” S815; the 1742 marriage entry, with the same correction, makes Eva Margaretha the daughter of the late Andreas Stapf S835. What is weak: Johann Adam was a widower when he married her in January 1742, and the 1766 marriage names only the bride's father S814, so an elder Maria Margaretha by his first wife cannot be ruled out, though a bride of 23 in 1766 fits the child of 1743

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
