The record in detail

Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED as Samuel Coffman's father. A Page County chancery bill of 1833 says Jacob and Saml. Kaufman held a Blue Ridge tract “devised from their father Martin Kaufman” S1338; Pierson Judd's later suit shows that Samuel was the one whose administrator was David C. Coffman and whose widow was Susan S1339; and an 1835 deed calls Jacob and Samuel brothers S1342.

Life

Record1809
His will, signed 20 September 1809 and proved 8 February 1813 (Shenandoah Will Book H, pp. 338–339), names his wife Mary and “my two sons, Samuel and Jacob Kaufman”. Jacob has the home plantation and pays Samuel £800, the Blue Ridge tract is divided between the two, and £100 goes to the President of the United States for the poor S1337. He died before 8 February 1813. These are the pages the 1940 family book cites S66
Death1788
He was executor of Henry Hershberger's will in 1788, and in 1790 guardian of Henry's eight younger children S1350. Henry's wife was Nancy, the widow of David Coffman
Record2026
History of this card. 5 Oct 2026
this record had read the 1805 will of Martin Coffman of the White House as his, and so marked the 1940 book’s citation (S66) as wrong; the 1809 will was read from the image (S1337) and the citation is right. The source notes S66, S103 and S104 and the timeline entry for 18 September 2026 still carried the earlier reading (the 1805 will, and “Geo.” as Samuel’s father from the marriage index) and were rewritten to match on 12 Oct 2026. 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 5 Oct 2026 (1 note). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed.

Family

Names
In the records he is Martin Coffman, Cofman, Kaufman and Kauffman; in Page and Shenandoah the same family is indexed under every one of these spellings
Marriage1793
His wife Mary joined him in a deed of 1 August 1793 giving 191 acres on the Hawksbill to a Christian Coffman “for the natural love and affection” S1352, and was examined on it as “the wife of the above named Martin Coffman” in September 1808 S1353. Her maiden name is not on any record read. The “Funkhouser” on a family chart has no record behind it S103. A 1771 grant names a Mary, daughter of John Lienberger, as the wife of a Martin Coffman, without saying which one; that is a lead only

Open questions

Open question
⚠️ He is not the Martin Coffman of the White House, whose 1805 will names seven sons and no Samuel. The 1785 tax list keeps the two men apart, one on the Hawksbill and one at the White House. The 1940 book's citation, Will Book H, pp. 338–339, is this Martin's will of 1809
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Son and heir of David Coffman: PROBABLE (strong). A Martin Coffman is called “Heir at Law of David Cofman decd.” in two Fairfax grants of 22 and 23 March 1779 S1345S1346 and “Eldest son & Heir at Law of David Coffman dec’d”, with Mary his wife, in a deed of 20 May 1783 S1344; David's widow swore that he was David's true heir S1349. Evidence that this is the same Martin: the name, a wife Mary in 1783 and in 1793, land on the Hawksbill, gifts of land to a Christian Coffman in both 1783 and 1793, and the Comer family as neighbours of both. What is weak or missing: no single record says that the heir of David in 1779–83 is the man who made the 1809 will. The Shenandoah land tax books of 1782–1815, following “Martin Coffman, Hawksbill” acreage to his estate and to Jacob, would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. On 28 December 1821, in Madison County, Kentucky, the clerk's memo on Will Bowles's marriage bond records that “Abraham Thomas the father of the within Lucy Thomas gave his personal consent to the match” S854. FamilySearch indexes the same bond and consent S855. Lucy Bowles was 45 in 1850, so about 17 in 1821, the age at which a father's consent was needed S155. What is weak: no record gives our Lucy Ann's maiden name or calls her the Lucy Thomas of 1821, so the tie rests on the couple's names and her age; Find a Grave calls her Alumbaugh, without a source.
Show detailsHide details

Evidence: The 1821 Madison County marriage bond memo names Abraham Thomas as the father of the Lucy Thomas who married Will Bowles, and FamilySearch indexes the same bond; Lucy Bowles's age in 1850 fits a bride of about 17. Probable
Probably him in 1830: Abraham Thomas, aged 50–60, heads a household in Estill County, Kentucky, three lines above William Boles Probable confirm or correct → S1013. Evidence: the Thomas and Boles names side by side, as on the 1840 Estill sheet S766. Weak: 1830 names only the heads, and Abraham Thomas was a common name. If this is he, his age puts his birth between 1770 and 1780. A Cornealius Thomas, 30–40, on line 16 of the same page may be a son. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. W. M. Wilder's typescript Wilder and Some Connecting Families, p. 571, “A Tennessee Fragment”: “F-2 James Wilder b in Va. m Nancy Hays, came to Tennessee with his father [David Wilder of Luther, Hancock Co.] and later moved to ‘Old Settlement’ Ky. They had: G-1 Nancy Wilder (dau of James & Nancy Hays Wilder) b in Tenn. abt 1802 d in Madison Co., Ark. after 1878, m Moses Williams (b abt 1799 in Tenn. d 7/27/1874 Madison Co., Ark.)” S863. That Nancy and Moses match the 1850 Owsley County couple, Moses, 50, and Nancy, 48, both born in Tennessee S173, and our Nancy was in Madison County, Arkansas, in 1880 S635. What is weak: a compiled family history is the only source; no record gives Nancy's maiden name; and the entry runs on to p. 572, not yet read. The James Wilder, 60, a tanner born in North Carolina, in Hancock County, Tennessee, in 1850 is a different man S871; online trees give our James his dates and censuses.

Evidence: W. M. Wilder's typescript family history (p. 571) names Nancy Wilder, born about 1802 in Tennessee and wife of Moses Williams, as the daughter of James Wilder and Nancy Hays; its Nancy and Moses match the 1850 Owsley County couple by ages and birthplaces. Weak or missing: A compiled family history is the only source and no record gives Nancy's maiden name; p. 572 is unread; the Hancock County, Tennessee, James Wilder of the 1850 census is another man, and the David Wilder with a wife Nancy Elkins there in 1850 is a younger man, not his father. Life

Birth
Born in Virginia; went to Tennessee with his father, David Wilder of Luther, Hancock County, and later moved to “Old Settlement”, Kentucky (the family history S863). His dates are not in any record read
Census1850
Caution: the David Wilder who had a wife Nancy Elkins is a younger man, and that couple are not James’s parents. The 1850 census of Subdivision 32, Hancock County, Tennessee, dwelling 43, lists David Wilder, 54, Nancy, 52, born in North Carolina, and Thomas, 27, James, 22, Wily, 15, David, 13, Lydia, 11, Malissa, 9, Shadrick, 7, and Charles, 7 (Ancestry record 6185981); a Virginia marriage index names Shadrick’s parents as David and Nancy Wilder (Ancestry record 1116314). Our James had a daughter born about 1802, so he was born about 1775 or earlier: a woman born about 1798 cannot be his mother, a David born about 1796 cannot be his father, and the James, 22, in that house is a third man. The compiled family history, as indexed, gives a David born in 1760 the wife Nancy Elkins and the son Wiley, which runs two Davids together. None of the 1850 children is attached to James’s father, the elder David Wilder of Luther, who still rests on the typescript alone S863. Weak: both records were read from the index on 1 October 2026 and no page image was opened; how the younger David is related to James (a brother or a nephew, perhaps) is not known. What would settle it: the 1850 page itself, and a deed, will or tax list that names the elder David. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Census1830
Caution, extended. The Hawkins County, Tennessee, censuses of 1830 and 1840 each show one David Wilder, born between 1791 and 1800
the same man as the David, 54, with Nancy Elkins in Hancock County in 1850 — and neither household has a man aged 70 or more S1628. A compiled Wilder family book gives “David b. 1760 Va., spouse Nancy Elkins, child Wiley”, which runs two Davids together; nothing here is graded on that book. An elder David, born about 1760, is not entered.

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: a printed tax-list transcript has a James Wilder, one poll, in East Tennessee about 1810 (Ancestry record 263066); the Hancock County tanner James Wilder would also have been a poll then, so it is not attached. What would settle it: the original list with county and year, or a record that tells the two men apart.

That Nancy and Moses match the 1850 Owsley County couple S173. What is weak: the compiled family history is the only source, with no primary record behind it. Online trees merge her with Jane Wilder, 72 in 1850 and 82 in 1860, wife of the Hancock County, Tennessee, tanner James Wilder S871; that family stayed in Tennessee while the book's couple went to Kentucky, so the birth in 1777 and death in 1870 the trees give are that woman's or no record's.

Weak or missing: Compiled lineage books only; no original record has been read; the Memorials calls his descent 'constructive' and gives Joyce's surname, Dudley, only 'as is supposed'. Life

Birth1759
Born 1759, Spotsylvania County, Virginia; married Jane Burris in 1776; died 1830, Clark County, Kentucky (lineage books)
Burial1759
A Revolutionary War burial index card gives Rev. James Quisenberry's dates as born 13 June 1759 and died 5 August 1830, aged 71, and says he was buried on his farm in Clark County, Kentucky, and was a “defender of Fort Boonesboro” S728. It is a compiled card, not an original record.
Residence1783
Colonial Families of the United States calls him the founder of the Kentucky branch: after service in the Orange County militia he settled in 1783 in what is now Clark County, was in the garrison of the fort at Boonesboro under Daniel Boone, and was an ordained Baptist minister. It names his first three children by Jane Burris: Joyce, born 1777, who married James Duncan; Frances, born 1779, who married John Bruner; and Jane, born 1782, who married Ambrose Bush S762. A Burris typescript says his family moved from Spotsylvania to Orange when he was ten, and names his parents as Aaron and Joyce Quisenberry S763; the family Memorials makes him the son of Aaron Quisenberry (about 1715–1795) and of Joyce Dudley, “as is supposed” S761 Probable confirm or correct →. What is weak: all three are compiled books; the Memorials author calls his own descent “constructive” and hedges Joyce's surname; and two of the books give James Jane's 5 July birthday, one also a 24 December wedding, where the stones say 13 June and 4 December. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.
Birth2026
The DAR's Genealogical Research System, searched directly on 8 October 2026, lists him as ancestor A093310: patriotic service in Virginia, for paying the supply tax of 1783 in Orange County; born 13 June 1759 in Orange County, died 5 August 1830 in Clark County, Kentucky; wives Jane Burris and Chloe Shipp S1608. It lists his son Colby Burris, married to Lucy Bush, on four approved applications, and one member's line runs through their daughter Louisa and David Chenault. It also lists his father as Aaron Quisenberry (A093307, who furnished beef for the army; died before 28 April 1795 in Orange County) and his mother as Joyce Dudley. The DAR credits him with paying a tax, not with service at Boonesborough, and it warns that a James “Cusinbury” who served under Captain Porterfield was a different man who died in service. The second wife, Chloe Shipp, agrees with the 1811 Clark County marriage above. This is the DAR's own database of approved applications, a compiled lineage, so nothing here is graded above Probable on it alone. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.

Family

Marriage1811
A Clark County marriage register records the marriage of a James Quisenberry and Cloey Ship on 24 December 1811, performed by James Haggard S727 Probable confirm or correct →. It may be a second marriage for this James after Jane Burris died; on the next page of the register a James Quisenberry officiates at three marriages, which fits a minister. What is weak: the register gives no ages or parents, so it does not show which James this is; Jane Burris's death, 3 November 1811, comes only from a book's copy of her stone S750; and the original bond has not been read.
Marriage1759
His epitaph, as copied into a Quisenberry family book, says he was born in Orange County, Virginia, “of English parentage”, on 13 June 1759; married Jane Burrus in his eighteenth year and had seven sons and six daughters by her; married Chloe Shipp of Clark County on 24 December 1811 and had eleven more children; moved to Kentucky in 1783; and died on 5 August 1830 S750 Probable confirm or correct →. This names the 1811 bride of the Clark County register as his second wife. What is weak: it is a book's copy of the stone; and it puts his birth in Orange County, where a family history puts it in Spotsylvania, so the card keeps Spotsylvania.

Life

Birth1759
Born 5 July 1759, Orange County, Virginia; died 3 November 1811, Clark County, Kentucky (her tombstone, as a family book copies it S750); one DAR entry's 1739 is not supported by anything read
Record1776
A typescript history of the Burris family lists her as the ninth of Thomas Burris's children, married at seventeen on 4 December 1776 to James Quisenberry, “who was the same age”, and dead on 3 November 1811 S763. It prints her birth year as 1755, a slip, since it makes her James's age and her stone says 1759. Her sister Frances Tandy Burris married William Bush, “Captain Billy Bush” (1746–1815), son of Philip Bush Sr., on 9 December 1778, and her sister Mourning married Thomas Graves Jr. in 1791. Family

Parents1788
Her father's will, written 2 October 1788 and proved 23 March 1789 in Orange County, Virginia (Will Book 3), names “my daughter Jane Quisenberry” and “my grand Daughter Frances Quisenberry the Daughter of Jane Quisenberry” S645. It is the first original record for her. It shows that she was Thomas Burrus's daughter and married to a Quisenberry by 1788, but it does not name her husband or give her age, so her birth year is still open.
Marriage1776
Her tombstone in Clark County, Kentucky, as copied into a Quisenberry family book, calls her the consort of Rev. James Quisenberry, married 4 December 1776, the mother of thirteen children, born in Orange County, Virginia, on 5 July 1759, and dead on 3 November 1811, aged 52 years, 3 months and 27 days S750 Probable confirm or correct →. A second DAR entry, for Lilla May Duncan, also gives her as 1759–1811 S751. What is weak: this is a book's copy of the stone, not the stone itself; but the age at death checks out against both dates.
Parents1788
Her mother: Frances Tandy Probable confirm or correct →, by DAR Lineage Book no. 112604, “Thomas Burris m. Frances Tandy” S751; her father's 1788 will names his wife Frances S645. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: only compiled books give the name Tandy, and the will does not say Frances was Jane's mother.

Weak or missing: The 1778 roll is a name match only; nothing yet shows Lucy was the child of his second wife, Rachel, rather than his first. The Ridge Runners chart cites no sources and its dates (20 February; died about 1824) disagree with the lineage books (23 February; 1836). Military1778
A Francis Bush enlisted on 14 February 1778 for one year in Capt. William Taylor's company of the 2nd Virginia Regiment, and was present in September 1778 S649. Probable confirm or correct → This is the first original record of service behind the lineage books, and he would have been 27. But a roll gives only a name, so the match rests on the name alone. A pension or bounty-land file would settle it. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.
Death1978
A compiled ancestor chart in Ridge Runners (1978) names his first wife, Lucy Davis, born about 1750, married about 1770 in Orange County, died before 1794, and his parents, Philip Bush and Mary Bryan S772 Probable confirm or correct →. What is weak: the chart cites no sources, and it gives his birth as 20 February and his death as about 1824, where the lineage books say 23 February and 1836. If Lucy Bush was born before 1794, Lucy Davis may be her mother rather than Rachel.
Military2026
The DAR's Genealogical Research System, searched directly on 8 October 2026, lists him as ancestor A017387: private, 2nd Regiment, Virginia; born 20 February 1750 in Orange County; died before March 1818 in Clark County, Kentucky; first wife Lucy Davis, second wife Rachel Martin S1608. One member's line gives Lucy, born 5 May 1790, as his child by Rachel Martin, whom he married about 1788. Two readings of his death now stand: the older lineage books say 1836; the DAR's present file says before March 1818 and gives 20 February, not 23 February, for his birth. The 1818 date is the better supported, because it rests on a probate date and the 1836 date has no record behind it, but the Clark County probate has not been read here against this card, so the heading keeps 1836 until it is. The DAR cites no source for the 2nd Regiment service. This is the DAR's own database of approved applications, a compiled lineage, so nothing here is graded above Probable on it alone. Research status: PROBABLE — from compiled lineage books only: SAR application 27139 S498 and DAR Lineage Book no. 141325 S500. The DAR book makes her Francis Bush's second wife, so she may be Lucy's stepmother rather than her mother. Her parents: John Martin and Rachel Pierce by a supplemental SAR application and the DAR S764S500, the Pace family book says Rachel Pace S749. This record goes with Rachel Pierce as probable and keeps Pace as the alternate reading
Show detailsHide details

Evidence: SAR application 27139 and DAR Lineage Book no. 141325, which calls her Francis Bush's second wife; a Rachel Bush, 45 or over, heading a Clark County household in 1820; Rachael Bush, 93, blind, with Fielding Bush in Clark County in 1860; a supplemental SAR application naming her parents as John Martin and Rachel Pierce. Weak or missing: She may be Lucy's stepmother, not her mother; the 1820 house has no older man though Francis is said to have lived to 1836; her mother is given here as Rachel Pierce (SAR and DAR), with Rachel Pace (a Pace family book) as the alternate reading. Life

Note1767
1767–1860 (lineage books)
Census1820
In 1820 a Rachel Bush, 45 or over, headed a household in Clark County, Kentucky, with two young men and a girl, among the Martin households S650. Her age fits a birth in 1767. The index gives her ten slaves; the image shows none. Probable confirm or correct → What is weak: there is no older man in the house, yet the lineage books have Francis living until 1836. Either he was away or dead by 1820, or this is another Rachel. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.
Death1768
A Pace family book gives her birth as 22 August 1768 in Fluvanna County, Virginia, her death in 1860, and her parents as John Martin and Rachel Pace, and calls her Francis Bush's second wife S749 Probable confirm or correct →. What is weak: it is a compiled book, not a record; it leaves the marriage year blank; and her age of 93 in 1860 points to 1767, not 1768.

History of this card. The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 28 Sep 2026 (1 note). The marks and their dates were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed. 13 Oct 2026
3 notes on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; they were added on: 26 Sep 2026 (3 notes). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed. 13 Oct 2026 — one note ended “added 26 September 2026; Pierce made the lead reading 27 September 2026.” Those two dates now stand here only; the note is otherwise unchanged.

Family

Children1860
On 26 June 1860 Rachael Bush, 93, blind, born in Virginia, was living in Clark County, Kentucky, with Fielding Bush, 63, a farmer, probably her son S702. It is the first record made in her lifetime that fits the lineage books' 1767 birth and 1860 death.
Parents1915
Her mother: probably Rachel Pierce; the alternate reading is Rachel Pace. A supplemental SAR application on number 27139, approved in 1915, gives her parents as John Martin (1746–1830), a private in Capt. Samuel Hawes's company of the 2nd Virginia Regiment from 16 September 1775, who settled in Clark County, Kentucky, and was pensioned in 1820, and Rachel Pierce S764. DAR no. 141325 also says Rachel Pierce S500. The Pace family book says Rachel Pace S749. Probable confirm or correct → Why Pierce leads: a lineage application that sets out its evidence for the Revolutionary service, and was checked and approved on it, outweighs a compiled family book that cites nothing for the name, and the DAR entry agrees with it. What is weak: none of the three is a record made in her lifetime, none cites a marriage record for John Martin, and Pierce and Pace could be one name misread. A marriage or probate record naming John Martin's wife would settle it; if you have one, use “Add to this record”.
Parents1768
Her parents: Lieut. John Martin and Rachel Pace (or Pierce) Probable confirm or correct →. A FamilySearch index of Virginia christenings has a Rachel Martin born 22 August 1768 and christened 15 October 1768 in St James Northam Parish, Goochland County, daughter of John Martin and Rachel Pace S857, and a John Martin married Rachel Peace or Pace in that parish on 3 January 1757 S858. This record, independent of the lineage books, leans to Pace; Earl accepted both parents as probable. What is weak: both are indexes with no image read, and the 1768 child is matched to her by name, parish and date only.

Research status: CONFIRMED as the father of Mary Burroughs Timberman. The New Jersey return of deaths for Upper Pittsgrove Township, Salem County, read from the image, records the death of Mary Timberman, married, 70, of consumption, at Upper Alloways Creek on 6 June 1858, gives her birthplace as Upper Pittsgrove, and names her parent Benjamin Burroughs S860. A FamilySearch index of New Jersey church records independently gives a Mary Burroughs, daughter of Benjamin Burroughs and Judith, with a Salem birth of 8 June 1788, the year agreeing with her age at death S1076
Show detailsHide details

Life

Death2026
The DAR's Genealogical Research System, searched directly on 8 October 2026, has this Benjamin as Benjamin Burroughs Jr, born 1764, died 1826, married in 1784 to Judith Lummis (also spelled Loomis), who was born in 1766 and died in 1820 S1608. That agrees with the 1784 marriage and the January 1826 will above. It makes him the son of Benjamin Burroughs, ancestor A019060, a private in Captain Jacob Dubois's company of Colonel Samuel Dick's New Jersey militia, born 1742 in Morris County, died before 19 February 1807 at Pittsgrove, Salem County, and of Mary Van Horn, married 1763. What is weak: every DAR line from Benjamin Jr runs through his son James (1790–1827); none names his daughter Mary or the Timbermans, and no record naming his parents has been read. So the older Benjamin and Mary Van Horn are a lead for his parents, not yet entered as such; the elder Benjamin's Salem County estate of 1807 would be the record to read. This is the DAR's own database of approved applications, a compiled lineage, so nothing here is graded above Probable on it alone. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.

Father of Mary Burroughs Timberman. Her wife-of and mother-of links to Samuel Timberman and John H. Timberman are Probable, so his place in Earl’s line rests on hers
Marriage1764
His wife is Judith by the church-record index alone S1076; she has no card. His own birth and death are on no record read. The “K., Jr.”, the birth of 20 July 1764 and the death of 14 March 1826 that online trees give him are not used
Marriage1830
A later Benjamin Burroughs of Salem, father of a Mary born in 1830 to a wife Hannah, is a namesake in the same index and is kept apart

Open questions

Probable
Probably his marriage: a later fair copy of a church marriage register, indexed to Daretown, Pittsgrove, Salem County, has “Benjamin Borans to Judah Lummus” on 30 March 1784 Probable confirm or correct → S1150. The evidence is the year, both names and the place, which fit Benjamin and Judith, parents of Mary born at Salem in 1788 S1076, and a published family history’s Judith Loomis, married 1784. What is weak: the spellings are phonetic, the copy names no church, and the family history is not a primary record. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probably his will: on 6 January 1826 Benjamin Burroughs of Pilesgrove Township, Salem County, “weak in body”, left his clothes to his son James, a furnished bed, a looking glass, chairs and silver teaspoons to his daughter Hannah, and the rest to “my children” equally, with his son Cornelius as sole executor Probable confirm or correct → S1168. The evidence is the county and the generation: Upper Pittsgrove, where Mary was born in 1788, was split from Pilesgrove. What is weak: the will does not name Mary or a wife, and its proof, on the next page, has not been read, so it gives no death date. A Salem County record naming Mary among his heirs would settle it. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A DAR lineage book makes him Benjamin Burroughs Jr., son of Benjamin Burroughs (1742–1803), a private in Capt. Jacob DuBois’ company of Col. Samuel Dick’s New Jersey regiment who died in Salem County, and Mary Van Horn, married 1763; it names his daughter Hannah (1803–1878) as the wife of John Lentz. Weak: a compiled lineage with no citations, the same source as the 1764/1826 dates this card does not use. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1486
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: Sons of the American Revolution application 27988 (Henry Harding Burroughs) claims descent from “Benjamin Burroughs, 1st”, but only the cover was read (Ancestry record 327086); the 1764 birth and the wife Judith Lummis are index-only. Haddonfield Monthly Meeting minutes, 1762–81, pp. 124–127, are indexed to a Benjamin Burroughs (Ancestry record 1100642516), but Haddonfield is outside Salem County and no event is indexed. What would settle it: the application’s lineage pages and the minutes, pp. 124–127.

Research status

Research status: PROBABLE, weak as the father of Samuel Timberman. New Jersey Deaths & Burials index a Samuel Timberman (b. 1778, d. 8 May 1859, Alloway Township, Salem County) with father William Timberman, but the identification with this tree's Samuel rests on Salem County location alone, not a direct document match.
Show detailsHide details

Evidence: The Upper Alloways Creek return of deaths, read from the image (S1261), records Samuel Timberman, a widowed farmer of 81, who died on 8 May 1859, and names his parent as William; the New Jersey Deaths & Burials index gives the same death and father William Timberman. Weak or missing: That this Samuel is the Samuel Timberman of this tree (husband of Mary Burroughs) is inferred from the shared Salem County location alone; a Samuel Timberman also married Mary Ann Applegate in Salem in 1837, so there may be two men of the name, or Samuel was a widower who remarried. The other sons were William, Michael, and Robert. Robert was born after his father's death. The other daughters were Elizabeth, Phoebe, and Catherine.” S864. Our John Covey Howard of Harlan County fits: his 1850 household includes a Larkin and a Michael, the names of brothers in the query S865, and his sons' death records name him S455. What is weak: a descendant's query, compiled and unsourced; no primary record names John Covey's father. Online trees give this John Howard births from 1763 to 1779, a middle name Warjack and Georgia parents, none from a record read, and the Magoffin County marriage of James C.
