The record in detail

Deceased ancestors are given in full — this is ordinary published genealogy drawn from records that are already public. Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only — Earl's instruction of 3 October 2026: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person's own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only: no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies — an unknown age is resolved protectively, not conveniently.

Life

Birth1897
🔑 Born 2 December 1897 — the date is in his own hand. His World War I draft registration card, read off the image at full resolution, writes "4. Date of birth: Dec. 2, 1897" on a form he signed beneath the printed affirmation "I affirm that I have verified above answers and that they are true" S148
Arrival1930
🔑 Box 10, "Native Born", is ticked
boxes 11 (Naturalized) and 12 (citizen by his father's naturalization) are empty, as are both alien boxes. He was a citizen by birth, independently of and consistently with the Na recorded against his parents in 1930 S148S147
Census1920
🔑 The 1920 census tests that self-reported date against an enumerator, and it holds. On the sheet of 17 January 1920, taken against a reference date of 1 January 1920, he is 22
and 2 December 1897 makes him exactly 22 on that day. A birth in December 1898 would have made him 21. The date he wrote in his own hand survives an independent test S150S148
Census1900
The 1900 sheet's age column agrees with him. That page gives his age as 2 at the 15 June 1900 enumeration, which fits December 1897; December 1898 would have made him 1. The last figure of the year in the date cell beside it is blotted and can be read as a 7 or an 8, so this card rests on the age column, which is clear S141S148
Census1920
🔑 In January 1920 he and Mildred are living in his parents' house. He is entered as Son, a Laborer in general work, born California; Mildred, 21, is entered as Daughter-in-law. It is the only document that places the young couple under Frank Sr's roof, and it is the sheet behind the "Mildresk" index entry carried on her card
now read rather than indexed S150
Work1918
Laborer for Ritchie Bros Co., Mission San Jose
the first occupation and employer on any document for him; medium height, medium build, gray eyes, brown hair, no disqualifying injury. Registered 12 September 1918 at the Local Board for Division No. 2, Alameda County, Hayward, serial 939, order A 2696 S148
Record2026
Ran — owned, per family — Coste's saloon, a speakeasy at Mission San José during Prohibition. His granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins named him in a newspaper clipping of the saloon's line-up, third from left: "My Grandfather Frank Da Silva Jr. He was the owner of this speakeasy in Mission San Jose Ca." (via Earl Proeger, 1 October 2026). Prohibition began in January 1920 and he died in December 1924, so the photograph is most likely c. 1920–1924. ⚠️ This is family testimony, not a record — no licence, directory, court or newspaper entry has yet been found; the clipping and the full reasoning are under Photos and Documents below.
Death1924
Died 3 December 1924, Alameda County
one day after his 27th birthday — California Death Index, middle initial T intact S53. No other Frank Silva dying in the county in 1924–25 carries both that initial and that date.
Burial
Buried St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fremont / Centerville, in what is almost certainly the family plot S54
Census2026
History of this card. 13 Oct 2026
the note on the 1900 census had said the sheet wrote “Dec 1898” and called that cell an error. The cell was read again from the image on 13 Oct 2026: its last figure is blotted and reads as a 7 or an 8, so the note now rests on the age column (2) alone. No date or grade changed. 13 Oct 2026 — the sentence saying this page called him “Frank Thomas Silva” until 14 September 2026, further than the evidence went, was moved here from the note on his middle name.
The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 21 Sep 2026 (2 notes, his draft registration naming Mildred and giving his employer), 1 Oct 2026 (2 notes, the saloon clipping and the two studio portraits). The marks were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed.
12 Oct 2026 — “Three documents now point at December 1897” reworded as a standing statement; the third document is the 1918 draft card, read 21 Sep 2026 (S148). The “new” marks on the draft-card note in the sources list (he names Mildred; occupation and employer; physical description) were taken off the same day.
22 Sep 2026 — S146, S147, S150 were read again from the image at full resolution; what the re-read found is in the standing note of each source in the sources list, and the dated “supplement” label was taken off those notes on 12 Oct 2026.

Family

Children
Father of Aileane
Marriage1918
The first document in which he himself names Mildred. Nearest relative: "Wife Mildred Silva", at his own address, Mission San Jose
which dates the marriage to before 12 September 1918, consistent with Aileane's 1918 birth S148
Parents1920
Son of Frank Silva Sr and Anna Silva
the 1920 census gives his relationship to head of household as "Son", age 22, married, living in his parents' house with his wife S48
Parents2026
Two studio portraits Confirmed (family testimony), both identified on 1 October 2026 by his granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins: one of about 1908–1912 with his parents
“Frank Da Silva Jr. My mother’s Dad, his Mother and Father Frank Da Silva Senior” — and one of two couples, about 1915–1920, with his wife Mildred, her sister Helen (Rose) and Helen’s husband Victor Johnson (confirmed by Patti). ⚠️ Helen married Victor only after 1942, and Frank Jr died in 1924, so the man beside Helen may be her first husband William Farrell; not settled. Both are in Photos below.

Open questions

Open question
⚠️ That date is self-reported on a form he signed, not a birth register. It is evidence of a different kind from a baptism or a civil birth entry, and it is not treated here as though it were one S148
Open question
⚠️ The card's own arithmetic agrees with it, which is why it is trusted as far as it goes. Age 20 at 12 September 1918 brackets the birth to 13 September 1897 × 12 September 1898, and 2 December 1897 falls inside that window S148
Open question
⚠️ The card gives no birthplace. The revised Form No. 1 records citizenship status but not the town or state, so Native Born fixes the country and nothing finer
California comes from the 1920 and 1930 censuses, not from this card S48S49
Open question
⚠️ Three documents point at December 1897 and none of them is a birth register. A self-affirmed draft card, an age column in 1900 and an age column in 1920 are consistent with one another; they are not the same thing as a civil birth entry or a baptism, and no California birth record for him has been found S148S150
Open question
⚠️ Their daughter Aileane, born August 1918, is not on that sheet, though she should be about sixteen months old. The record does not explain it and nothing is invented to fill the gap S150
Open question
⚠️ Frank Sr appears nowhere on the draft card. The father/son link is not evidenced by it and continues to rest on the 1910 and 1920 census sheets S146S48
Open question
⚠️ The middle name "Thomas" is not confirmed and is not promoted. Every record retrieved gives "Frank T." or plain "Frank"
the initial is documented, the name behind it is Probable, from a user tree S12.

Mildred Rose Silva — detail from the three-generation photograph (FamilySearch Memory 9943586) S323.

Life

Birth1898
Born 26 July 1898, California
the day is from the California Death Index S316; enumerated as a two-year-old daughter in her own father's household in the 1900 census, Washington Township, Alameda County, where she and her twin brother Edward are bracketed "Twins" S55. That is what lifts her from a name in a parent field to a documented person with parents of her own.
Census1920
In 1920 she is in her husband's parents' house, indexed by OCR as "Mildresk" Silva, born 1899 California S48
Photograph
A photograph of Mildred and William Springer by a picket fence, late 1930s or 1940s, from Patricia Collins’s collection, is in Photos below with its AI-assisted enhanced version.
Death1960
Died 7 October 1960, Alameda County, California, as Mildred A Springer Confirmed (index; certificate not seen)
California Death Index 1940–1997: born 26 July 1898, California, mother's maiden name Mendonca S316. The birth date matches the 1900 twins entry and the maiden name matches her mother's, so this is her. She had remarried and died as Springer, which is why searches under Silva and Rose find nothing.
Death1960
Confirmed Her death notice in the Oakland Tribune, 9 October 1960 (p. 40): “SPRINGER, Mildred, October 7, 1960, beloved wife of William Springer”, mother of Mrs. Earl T. Roberts of San Lorenzo (her daughter Aileane), and sister of Mrs. Victor Johnson (Helen) and Mrs. Louise Perry, both of San Leandro, Anthony Rose of Hayward, Frank Rose of Watsonville and Mrs. Mary Gaularte of Sacramento. It calls her a native of Irvington and a member of the Maccabees, Hive 33, of Albany. The service was at Grant Miller Mortuaries’ East 14th Street Chapel, Oakland, on Monday 10 October at 11 a.m.; interment was private S1596. The date and the surname match the death index, and it is the first record that names her brothers and sisters. Mrs. Louise Perry is probably her sister Louise Elizabeth; Mrs. Mary Gaularte is not yet identified. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not checked word for word against the page image. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Photograph1915
A studio portrait of two couples, about 1915–1920 Confirmed (family testimony): Mildred and her first husband Frank Da Silva Jr, with her sister Helen (Rose) and Helen’s husband Victor Johnson, as her granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins named them on 1 October 2026 (Helen is Mrs. Victor Johnson in Mildred’s 1960 death notice; Patti confirmed the name). ⚠️ Helen married Victor only after her first husband William Farrell was killed on 10 June 1946 (she was still Mrs. O’Farrell in 1942), and Frank Jr died in 1924, so the man beside Helen in this photograph may be Farrell; not settled. In Photos below.
Record2026
History of this card. 1 Oct 2026
the studio portrait of two couples was added on the word of her granddaughter; the “new” mark was taken off that note on 12 Oct 2026. Who the man beside Helen is stays marked as an open question.
14 Sep 2026 — her 1960 death year, then resting on a user tree alone, was withdrawn because searches under Silva and Rose found nothing. 23 Sep 2026 — the date was restored as 7 October 1960 from the California Death Index entry for Mildred A Springer (S316).

Family

Children1918
Her daughter's 1918 birth index entry carries Rose in the mother's-maiden-name field
independent corroboration from a vital-records index S56
Marriage1918
Married Frank T. Silva (Frank Silva Jr) before September 1918, when he named "Wife Mildred Silva" on his draft card; in January 1920 the couple were in his father's household S48. Later surname Springer S316.
Children
A three-generation photograph shows her with her daughter Aileane and granddaughter Nancy S323; it is in Photos below and her portrait above is cut from it.
Marriage1900
Her second husband now has a card of his own: William Springer, born at Oakland on 29 January 1900. His draft registration of 15 February 1942 names Mildred Springer as his next of kin (index only) S1627. He outlived her and died in November 1976, by the Social Security Death Index S1630.

And her second husband William Springer.” She died as Mildred A Springer S316. The 1950 census finds Mildred Springer, 51, born California, with her husband William Springer, 50, born California, an auto parts salesman, in Oakland, Alameda County Probable (name, age, birthplace and husband match; nothing else on the entry ties it to her)

Parents
His mother: Mary Jane “Mollie” Wright, named as Molly Jane Wright on his death certificate S134. FamilySearch indexes of his death and of the deaths of his brothers Dee Carl and Joseph Franklin, and his brother Jesse Lee's Social Security record, all give the parents as D. E. Coffman and Mary Jane Wright S831.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → A Taylor County marriage index has James D. Coffman marrying on 7 August 1901 (bride not named), where his obituary gives 1 August 1901 at Potosi, in the same county. Best guess: the same marriage, the index date probably the licence return or recording date rather than the wedding. What would settle it: the register image, which shows licence and return dates and the bride.
Open question
⚠️ The certificate gives his birthplace as Dallas, Texas, where this page carries Buffalo Gap, Taylor County S18. His mother's family were Dallas people and she married there in 1878, so Dallas is not implausible
but a certificate written ninety-one years after the fact, from a son's memory, is weak evidence of a birthplace. Recorded, not resolved S134

Life

Birth1883
Born 30 July 1883, Franklin County, Arkansas S16
Death1972
Died 29 October 1972, Abilene, Taylor County, Texas, aged 89; buried Dudley Cemetery S16
Military1920
Her sons-in-law: Willie Hollis Windham, husband of Ila Belle, born 3 March 1920 at Dudley, a veteran living at 408 Peach St., Abilene S541; and Hayden R. Nesmith, husband of Lydia Frances, a telegraph operator in Lubbock in 1955, where she taught at the Senior High School S553.
Census1940
In 1940 Hayden Nesmith, who later married her daughter Lydia Frances, was 26, single and farming with his parents, I. Shirel Nesmith and Maud, and his brothers Carlton and C. W., in Precinct 1 of Taylor County S565.
Census1920
Willie Hollis Windham's father was probably Tom J. Windham Probable confirm or correct →: the 1920 census of Justice Precinct 4, Callahan County, Texas, read from the image, lists Willie H., son, under a year old, in the household of Tom J. Windham, 36, a farmer born in Texas, and his wife Mary C., 32, born Mississippi, with Myrtle O., Dorace O., Era C., Ada L. and Cecil C. S878. Dorace is the sister he named on his 1946 draft card S541, and his Social Security record, read from the FamilySearch index, names his parents as Tom Windham and Callie Crenshaw S879. What is weak: the Social Security record has not been read on the image, and Tom's middle name, given in family trees as Jefferson, and his birth day and death date are on no document read. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence.
Record2026
History of this card. The notes on this card that carried a “new” mark were added on these days: 28 Sep 2026 (1 note). The marks and their dates were taken off on 12 Oct 2026, and nothing in the notes was changed.
19 Sep 2026
an earlier version of this page called Dr. James Burton Coffman her brother-in-law; her memorial lists him among her six children, and he is her son. 13 Oct 2026 — 3 notes on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; they were added on: 25 Sep 2026 (2 notes), 26 Sep 2026 (1 note). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed.
Death
Her transcribed obituary names surviving sons James, Robert, David, Jesse and Horace Coffman, and daughters Lydia Frances Nesmith and Ila Belle Windham; services at Elliott's Chapel of Memories, officiated by Bill Proctor, minister of the Dudley Church of Christ S16
The named son "Robert Coffman" is Earl's grandfather. This obituary is the document that welds Generation 3 to Generation 4 on the maternal side — and the same list is what exposed the brother-in-law error. James and Robert are consecutive entries on it.

Family

Siblings1920
Hayden Nesmith's boyhood: in 1920, in Precinct 7 of Taylor County, Haden, 5, was at home with Shirel I. and Maud Nesmith and his brothers Lewey, 7, and Carlton, 4 S746; in 1930 Hayden, 15, was at school, living with Isaac S. and Maude and his brothers Dewey and Carlton on R.F.D. 2 Abilene S747.
Children1905
Her son was Dr. James Burton Coffman (1905–2006), the Church of Christ Bible commentator. Her memorial lists her six children in order: Obera (1902–1904), James Burton (1905–2006), Robert William (1906–1990), David Emily (1909–2005), Jesse Jerome (1912–1992), Horace Glen (1915–2006) S16S30

Life

Military1917
His WWI draft registration card, signed "James Harris Timberman Jr." in his own hand at East Orange, New Jersey in 1917, settles the full given name and the birth date of 23 October 1886; it has him at 30, a deputy real-estate agent for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad at Hoboken S80 Confirmed
Death1886
His Ohio death certificate, read from the image, carries him the rest of the way: Jas. H. Timberman, born 23 October 1886 in Pennsylvania, a B&O Railroad inspector, died 24 January 1919 at 9 p.m. at Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio, of influenza after four days
the 1918–19 pandemic, exactly as the family remembered. The informant was his widow, reporting from Gallatin, Tennessee, where he was buried three days later. It names his parents J. H. Timberman Sr (born New Jersey) and Louise Harbauer (born Pennsylvania) S79 Confirmed
Death1930
His death when Louise was 21 months old is what the obituary describes
"at the age of two her family moved to Gallatin" — and by 1930 Nancy is enumerated as widowed. Two independent sources, one of them family-written, agree S26S27
The gap this note used to describe is closed. The draft card and the Ohio certificate together give the full name, the birth date, the death and both parents, so nothing now waits on the New Jersey birth certificate for Louise, Vol. 59 p. 95 (Orange, 10 April 1917) — only the index was ever retrieved. It would still add his mother's maiden name and both parents' ages as stated in 1917, and it is worth having for that. It is not online; the New Jersey State Archives holds it.

Marriage2026
History of this card. 26 Sep 2026
the marriage licence and solemnisation dates were corrected from 10 and 11 June 1915 to 15 and 17 June 1915: the book had first been read as the 10th and the 11th, and a second scan of the same page, with the marriage bond (S261), gave the 15th and the 17th. The clerk, first read as “Groves”, signs “Moon” (S29).

Open question
⚠️ Philadelphia is the one thing still Probable. The draft card names the city; the death certificate says only "Pa." Two cautions on the certificate's own face: its stated age of 31 is an arithmetic error for 32, and the cause of death is a handwritten word on 1919 microfilm, read as Influenza rather than transcribed from type S79

Life

Census1930
1930 census, Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee
"Timberman, Nancy, 52, widowed, head, high-school teacher," with her daughter Louise M., 13 S27
Record
Possible, not confirmed: A Sumner County, Tennessee, will-book index has “Timberman, Nancy M., Ex., p. 101” (Ancestry record 4264215): she may have been executrix of a parent’s estate, the M. standing for her maiden name Martin. Weak: an index line only; her known initial is L. and the estate is not named. What would settle it: will book page 101.
Census2026
History of this card. 26 Sep 2026
the boarder in her 1930 household (S27) had been read as a man, “Ernest Chernault”, as FamilySearch indexes him; a second scan of the sheet reads Chenault, Ermin, a woman.
Birth1878
Born 5 November 1878, Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee Probable
age 52 in the 1930 census is consistent S27S30
Death1967
Died 17 May 1967, at 811 Garner, Pasadena, Harris County, Texas Confirmed
Texas death certificate 31838; she had lived there ten years, and was taken home to Gallatin Cemetery, Tennessee S262. The FamilySearch tree had placed her death in California S30
Death1967
Confirmed Her obituary in The Tennessean, 18 May 1967 (p. 48): Mrs. Nancy Martin Timberman, 88, of Pasadena, Tex., formerly of Gallatin, “widow of James H. Timberman”, died in a Pasadena nursing home. She was a native of Sumner County and “taught school in Gallatin for many years”. She moved to Pasadena in 1957 “to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Louise Coffman”. Graveside services were at 4 p.m. on Friday 19 May in Gallatin Cemetery, from Harris-Donoho Funeral Home, Gallatin. The notice does not name her parents. Read from the page text (OCR) S1598
Death1935
Confirmed Named as a surviving sister, “Mrs. Nancy Timberman” of Nashville, in the notices of Louise Harsh’s death in February 1935; the funeral was held at her home in Nashville at 10 o’clock on Friday 15 February S1613. The Abilene paper calls a Mrs. Nancy Timberman of Gallatin a daughter of Mrs. Harsh; that is probably a second woman, Louise’s daughter Nannie, and is set out on Louise’s card. It also bears on the will-book line above: the “Nancy M. Timberman” who was an executrix could be either woman. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not from the page image.
That 1930 household is the single best document of the run that found it. One page puts Louise, her widowed mother, her mother's unmarried Martin sister and a Chenault relative under one roof — and in doing so it named two generations that had been blank.

and on 22 September Peter Hines Martin's own will names Joseph in the children's division S172, so that link no longer rests on a census household (the will does not write son; the bequest's structure carries it): Joseph Daniel Martin's own parents were Peter Hines Martin (4 Nov 1793 – 4 July 1849, Gallatin, Sumner Co., TN) S105 and Jane Bell, married 2 July 1818 in Davidson County S106. Two pencilled boxes on Robert William Coffman's pedigree chart S103 gave the names; the records confirmed the man, the marriage and the widow's household S98

Life

Birth1892
Born 16 September 1892, Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio S17
Death1942
Died 15 August 1942, Los Angeles, California, aged 49 S17
Death1942
She died at home, 2123 Lemoyne Avenue, Los Angeles. A Daily News item of 17 August 1942 reported that, after 20 years of migraine headaches and a recent major operation, she took an overdose of headache tablets and was dead when the police ambulance arrived. That is the paper's account, quoted as printed: it does not say whether the overdose was accidental, and no coroner's finding has been read. The item puts her death on Sunday 16 August and her age at 52; the death index gives 15 August, aged 49, and that is kept S1174.
Death1942
Her paid death notice in the Los Angeles Examiner, 19 August 1942, reads “Anna Blanche of 2123 Lemoyne ave., Los Angeles, loving wife of William L. Proeger” S1175.
Burial

Military1918
Named as his wife on William's 1918 draft card S381; in 1940 with him at 414 Park Ave., Dunkirk, New York, where he was a glass worker, both in Chicago in 1935 S382.
Photograph1932

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → She probably had an elder sister she never knew: Mary Roberts, who died of measles at Wheeling in April 1880, aged 14 months, twelve years before Anna was born. Two death registers name Mary’s parents as Henry and Rose S1556. Weak: neither gives Rose’s maiden name; the evidence is set out on her father’s card. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Open question
⚠️ She is no kin to the other Roberts on this tree. Earl Theodore Roberts, who married her son's widow Aileane in 1946, is son of Leon H Roberts and Bessie H Henderson of Massachusetts S88. Two unrelated Roberts families, one surname — do not merge them.

A California county marriage record — not a user tree, not NUMIDENT

  • The index for "California, County Marriages, 1849–1957" assigns roles in its own fields: Frank Silva — "Father Of Bride", Mildard A Rose — mother of the bride, Aileane S Proeger — bride S51. Aileane is using the married surname from William Harry Proeger, which is how the three of them are pinned together.
  • With the birth index S56 and the NUMIDENT parent fields S13, that is three independent sources agreeing on the same two parents. On 13 September 2026 there was one, and this couple sat at Probable confirm or correct →.
  • ⚠️ What did not get upgraded along with them: Frank's middle name, still Probable; and Mildred's death, Not found. The Azorean island was answered — but separately, by Frank Silva Sr's 1946 obituary S67, not by this marriage record. A record that answers one question does not answer the ones next to it.

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: no marriage record has been found; the day of his death is not entered
10 November 1976 and the parents Samuel Springer and Nettie Hertzman appear only in a grave index and an online family tree, which also gives his birthday as 21 January, not 29 January, so none of that is stated as fact here; his First World War draft card names a relative, Nettie Springer, without saying how she was related, so she is not entered as his mother; the 1950 census entry for William and Mildred Springer at Oakland is itself graded Probable on Mildred’s card. The California Death Index or a death certificate would settle the day of his death and his parents. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → She probably married John M. Fonseca in Alameda County on 30 May 1907: the county marriage index lists the bride as Louisa Rosa (Book 39, page 314). Alameda County and the year fit a 22-year-old Louise born in 1885, and the groom is the same John M. Fonseca as on the Brawley voter roll. Weak: an index only, with no age or parents, and Rosa is a common name. What would settle it: the certificate itself, Book 39, page 314 (a copy is being sought). Entered as a best guess under the family’s 6 October 2026 rule: conflicts are recorded, marked, not held back. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1538
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In 1910 she was probably Louise Fonseca, 24, born in California of Portuguese parents, married three years and the mother of two living children, on Railroad Avenue, South San Francisco, wife of John Fonseca, 28, a packing-house laborer born in Portugal, with daughters Mildred and Matilda. She is no longer in her father Antone’s household that year. Weak: the link from Louise Rose to Mrs. Fonseca rests on the 1907 Alameda marriage index and a voter roll that calls her Louise Rose Fonseca; no page names her parents. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1539
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In January 1920 she was probably Louise Fonseca, 34, born in California to Azores-born parents, on a rented dairy farm in Meloland Precinct, Holtville Township, Imperial County, wife of John Fonseca, an Azorean-born dairy farmer, with Mildred, 11, Matilda, 10, Irene, 9, and Lawrence, 7. Weak: the link from Louise Rose to Mrs. Fonseca rests on the 1907 Alameda marriage index and a voter roll that calls her Louise Rose Fonseca; no page names her parents. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1540
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → An Imperial County Great Register of the 1920s (Lavender Precinct) lists Mrs. Louise Rose Fonseca, housewife, Republican, of Route B, Brawley, next to John M. Fonseca, dairyman. It is one of two records that join the names Rose and Fonseca; the other is the index entry for her husband’s draft registration of 1917–18 at Highline, Imperial County, which gives his wife as Louise Rose Fonseca (the card itself has not been read). Weak: no age, birthplace or parents, and the year is not on the page. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1541
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In April 1930 she was probably Louise Fonseca, 44, born in California to Azores-born parents, first married at 22, on Arrow Route, Rialto, San Bernardino County, wife of John Fonseca, 47, a poultry-packing laborer born in the Azores, with their children Mildred, Irene, Laura, Frank, Lucille and Albert. Weak: the link from Louise Rose to Mrs. Fonseca rests on the 1907 Alameda marriage index and a voter roll that calls her Louise Rose Fonseca; no page names her parents. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1542
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In October 1960 she was probably Mrs. Louise Perry of San Leandro, named as a sister in the Oakland Tribune death notice of Mildred (Rose) Springer, 9 October 1960. Evidence: she is the only sister named Louise. Weak: the Fonseca marriage above is itself only probable, and no Perry marriage has been found; the notice was read from the page text (OCR). What would settle it: a Perry marriage record, or her death record. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1596
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: an Elizabeth Rose, 56, divorced, born in California, in Sacramento in 1940 (Ancestry record 69050340) is not taken as her; it would contradict the Fonseca records above, and only her name, age and birthplace fit. What would settle it: a Fonseca divorce record, or that woman’s death record naming her parents.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Her husband was probably John Marcos Fonseca, born 1 June 1882. Evidence: his First World War draft registration at Highline, Imperial County, names his wife as “Louise Rose Fonseca” S1636, which joins the 1907 marriage-index bride “Louisa Rosa” to the wife Louise of the 1910 to 1930 censuses; that John Fonseca’s wife was a Louise Rose is settled. Weak: no record read names her parents, so that she is this Louise, daughter of Antone Rose, rests on her name, age and California birth; the card is read from its index, not the image. Her death record or the 1907 marriage certificate would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. He has a card of his own: John Marcos Fonseca.

Death1960
Helen Agnes (Rose) Farrell Johnson Confirmed (family testimony + 1960 notice). Her sister Mildred’s death notice (Oakland Tribune, 9 October 1960, p. 40) names her as Mrs. Victor Johnson of San Leandro, and Mildred’s granddaughter Patricia (Proeger) Collins confirmed on 1 October 2026 that “Uncle Victor Johnson” sounded right.
Cause1946
William B. O’Farrell was killed on 10 June 1946 Confirmed (newspaper reports, read 2 October 2026). The Hayward Daily Review of 11 June 1946, page 1, names him as William B. O’Farrell of 1525 170th Avenue, Ashland, “husband of Mrs. Helen O’Farrell”, the same address Helen gave in 1942 S1178S627. Driving home from his job at the Pacific Ice Company at about 6:40 p.m., his car crossed the centre line and hit a 10-ton truck loaded with steel beams head-on, on San Leandro Boulevard at 92nd Avenue, Oakland. The trailer overturned and spilled the steel into the street; he was dead on arrival at Highland Hospital S1178S1180. The family remembered it as a steel-laden truck that dropped its load onto his car (Patricia (Proeger) Collins, 1 October 2026). The papers agree in substance; the difference is that his car struck the truck and the trailer then overturned. He was 46. ⚠️ His birth date is open: the Find a Grave index gives 16 June 1899, a user-made FamilySearch profile gives 16 January 1899 S1182; both fit age 46.
Death1995
Helen Agnes Rose died 20 November 1995, as Helen A. Johnson Confirmed: the Social Security Death Index entry for Helen A. Johnson gives 3 October 1899 – 20 November 1995, exactly the dates of Helen Agnes Rose’s Social Security record S1181S320.
Photograph1915
A studio portrait of two couples from Patricia Collins’s collection shows Helen with her sister Mildred and Mildred’s husband Frank Da Silva Jr; Patti names the fourth person as “her husband Victor”. ⚠️ The date and the names conflict, and this record does not settle it: the dress suggests about 1915–1920, Frank Jr died in December 1924, and Helen was still married to Farrell until his death in June 1946. So the man with Helen may be her first husband, William Farrell, named by the family after the husband they knew. In Photos below.

The Daily Review funeral notice of 12 June 1946 lists his survivors as “Mrs. Helen O’Farrell, widow” and “one daughter, Mrs. Lorraine Peterson” S1179. ⚠️ The notice makes her William’s daughter, not explicitly Helen’s; no birth record naming Helen as her mother has been found. Death1898
Dee Carl Coffman: born 1 Mar 1898 in Potosi, Taylor, Texas; died 23 Mar 1938 in Abilene, Taylor, Texas
Census1930
In 1930 he was a salesman for a packing company in Abilene and a veteran of the World War S1220; the 1940 Kauffman-Coffman genealogy says he served in the U.S. Navy in 1918 S1222
Census1933
The 1933 Abilene city directory lists “D Carl (Minnie M)” Coffman as a salesman at 426 Elm; the same page has J. Lee Coffman and a J. Frank Coffman with a wife Edna M.; a directory states no relationships, and J. Frank is either his brother Joseph Franklin Coffman, whose wife was Lora, or that brother’s son Joseph Franklin Coffman Jr., which the wife’s name fits better S1400
Death1938
His death certificate, read from the image, agrees with the index: he died of lobar pneumonia at Hendricks Memorial Hospital, Abilene, a salesman for the Rath Packing Co. who had lived 19 years in Abilene; it gives his father’s birthplace as Virginia and his burial at Abilene on 24 March 1938 S1438
Death2026
History of this card. 12 Oct 2026
the marriage line rewritten: the date of 24 June 1919 was given from the 1940 genealogy alone; his widow’s 1975 obituary gives the same date and adds Abilene (S1728). Still Probable. 12 Oct 2026 — his daughter Eva Mae linked to a card of her own, graded Probable (S1738). 12 Oct 2026 — the 1933 directory line now says that its J. Frank Coffman may be his nephew Joseph Franklin Coffman Jr., who has a card (S1753); it had named no one. 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 4 Oct 2026 (1 note). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed.

Her obituary, in the Abilene Reporter-News of 22 and 23 January 1975, calls her the daughter of early German settlers, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schultz, and says she was born at Abilene on 4 August 1900. It gives her home as 426 Elm and her church as the Southside Church of Christ; the funeral was on 23 January 1975, with burial at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Abilene, which is the IOOF Cemetery of her death certificate. Among the survivors it names her brother Carl Schultz (1888–1977) of Abilene. The notices were read as machine text on 4 October 2026; the page images have not been opened S1728

Research status: PROBABLE as a son of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz and her husband Herman Schultz, and so a brother of Minnie Mae Schultz Coffman. The evidence is strong: the index of the 1910 census of Abilene lists Otto, born in Texas about 1885, as a son in the household of H. and Pauline Schultz, with Carl, Philip and Minnie S1720; and the printed notice of his funeral in 1961 names his brothers Will, Carl and Phil and his one sister, Mrs. Minnie Coffman of 426 Elm Street, the house where Minnie Mae lived S1721. It stays Probable because every record is an index or the machine-read text of a newspaper page: no image has been read, and no record read so far names his parents.

Life

Death1961
Otto Herman Schultz died on 24 May 1961 at Abilene, Taylor County, Texas, aged 76. He was born in Texas on 16 September 1884. The day of death comes from the index of the Texas death records, and the day of birth from the index of his 1942 draft registration and the Find a Grave index S1720. The funeral notice gives the same two days and says he was born in Abilene and died in Hendrick Memorial Hospital after an illness of two months S1721.
Record1920
The index of the 1920 census of Abilene lists Otto Schultz, 35, as a son of the head of the household on Elm Street where his sister Minnie Mae and her husband also lived S1720. His line has not been checked on the image of that page.
Death1913
According to the funeral notice he became a partner in the Anderson-Schultz Dry Goods Company in 1913, was its sole owner within two years, and ran Schultz Dry Goods Company until he retired in 1957. His home was at 749 Butternut Street, Abilene; the funeral was held by the pastor of First Methodist Church, with burial at Elmwood Memorial Park S1721.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → He married Victoria Julia Galbraith (1894–1980). A Texas marriage index lists Otto H. Schultz and “Victor Julia Galbraith”, and the funeral notice says he married her at Abilene in 1918 S1720S1721. What is weak or missing: the marriage record itself has not been read, and the index does not give the day. His wife does not have a card, and their children are not named here. Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: every record here is an index or the machine-read text of a newspaper page, and no image has been read; the index of his own death record gives no usable parents, because its parent field repeats his own name; the funeral notice names his brothers and sister but not his parents; and the census indexes give his year of birth as about 1885, a year later than the draft registration. Research status: PROBABLE as a son of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz and her husband Herman Schultz, and so a brother of Minnie Mae Schultz Coffman and of Otto Herman Schultz. The evidence is strong: the index of his own Texas death record names his father as Herman Schultz and his mother as Pauline Betcher, the same two names that Minnie Mae’s death certificate gives; and the index of the 1900 census of Taylor County lists Willie as a son in the household of Herman and Pauline Shultz, with Carl, Otto and Phillip S1724. It stays Probable because every record is an index: no image of the death record or of the census page has been read.

Evidence: The index of his Texas death record gives William J. Life

Death1972
William John Schultz died on 26 March 1972 at Abilene, Taylor County, Texas, aged 86. He was born at Abilene on 22 January 1886. Both days come from the index of the Texas death records; the Social Security Death Index gives the same day of birth and March 1972, and the Find a Grave index gives William John Schultz, 1886–1972, buried at Abilene S1724. His obituary gives the burial at Elmwood Memorial Park, Abilene: Probable, from the machine-read text of the newspaper page alone; no page image, stone or cemetery record has been read S1745.
Death1972
His obituary, in the Abilene Reporter-News of 27 March 1972, calls W. J. Schultz the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schultz and says he died at Hendrick Memorial Hospital, married Mable Mott at Abilene in 1907, and was a grocer from 1912 to 1946. It names his brother Carl (1888–1977) and his sister Mrs. M. M. Coffman among the survivors. It is known here from the machine-read text of the page only S1745.
Death1961
The notice of his brother Otto’s funeral in 1961 names a brother Will among the survivors; it is known here from the machine-read text of the page only S1721.
Death1886
He is not the William J. Schultz who was born on 1 February 1886 at Brenham, Texas, and died in 1969 at Alvin. That man’s father was also a Herman Schultz, but his mother was Minnie Wolf. The mother’s name, the day of birth and the place tell the two apart.

His brother Philip linked when his card was written (S1744). Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — his wife named in full with her dates, birthplace and burial, as Probable, from her 1977 obituary, the Texas Death Index and the 1900 census index (S1757): the card said the marriage was known from his obituary alone. The years of his brother Carl (1888–1977) added (S1756).

Family

Marriage1890
His wife was Mabel Mott (24 September 1890 – 15 July 1977), born at Henrietta, Clay County, Texas; her last days were at Houston. Probable, and the evidence is strong, but it is index and machine-read newspaper text only: her obituary, in the Abilene Reporter-News of 16 and 17 July 1977, says she married W. J. Schultz in 1907; the Texas Death Index has her; and the index of the 1900 census of Callahan County lists Mable, born in Texas in September 1890 S1757. Her first notice prints the birthplace as “Henrietta, Okla.”; Henrietta in Texas is followed here, with the 1900 census index. His obituary spells her Mable and her own spells her Mabel. Her notices give her burial at Elmwood Memorial Park, Abilene, the cemetery his obituary names for him: Probable, from the newspaper text alone, with no page image, stone or cemetery record read. She is named here and has no card of her own; her parents are not in this record.
Parents
Son of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz. His father, Herman Schultz, is not yet in this record.

Research status: PROBABLE as a son of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz and her husband Herman Schultz, and so a brother of Minnie Mae Schultz Coffman, Otto Herman Schultz and William John Schultz. The evidence is strong: the index of the 1900 census of Taylor County lists Carl, born in Texas in November 1888, as a son in the household of Herman and Pauline Shultz, with Otto, Willie and Phillip, and the index of the 1910 census of Abilene lists Carl as a son of H. and Pauline Schultz, with Otto, Philip and Minnie S1727. His obituary of January 1977 calls him a son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schultz and names a brother Otto S1756. It stays Probable because the census records are indexes and the obituary is the machine-read text of a newspaper page: no image of any of them has been read, and the one page that has been read, the 1920 census, does not name his parents.

Evidence: His obituary, in the Abilene Reporter-News of 20 and 21 January 1977, names Carl R. Schultz, 88, of 1222 South 5th, Abilene, as a son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schultz and names a brother Otto; the Social Security Death Index and the Texas Death Index agree with it on his death on 19 January 1977 (S1756). The index of the 1900 census of Taylor County lists Carl, born in Texas in November 1888, as a son of Herman and Pauline Shultz, and the index of the 1910 census of Abilene lists him as their son (S1727); a Texas county marriage index lists Carl R. Weak or missing: Every one of those records is an index or the machine-read text of a newspaper page, and no image of any of them has been read; the day and town of his birth and his burial rest on the obituary text alone; the Texas Death Index gives the county of death as “Lamb”, where the obituary has Abilene; the 1920 census page, read from the image, does not name his parents (S1219); the marriage index and his obituary differ by a year on his marriage. Life

Death1977
Carl Schultz died on 19 January 1977 at Abilene, Taylor County, Texas, aged 88. He was born at Abilene on 26 November 1888. The day and town of birth are from his obituary alone; the index of the 1900 census agrees on the month and the year S1727. The date of death is in the obituary, the Social Security Death Index and the Texas Death Index; the death index gives the county as “Lamb”, which is taken here as an error for Taylor, because the obituary has him of 1222 South 5th, Abilene. Earth, where his widow lived at the end of her life, is in Lamb County, and whether that index row belongs to her has not been checked. The obituary calls him Carl R. Schultz; the middle initial is from it alone. He is buried at Elmwood Memorial Park, Abilene: Probable, from the machine-read text of the newspaper notices alone; no page image, stone or cemetery record has been read S1756.
Census1920
In January 1920 a Carl Schultz, 31, born in Texas to German-born parents, a retail merchant in dry goods who owned his house free, was the head of the household at 442 Elm Street, Abilene, the next entry after the Schultz household in which his sister Minnie Mae lived; this is read from the census page image S1219. His age fits a birth in November 1888. The page does not state how he was related to the family next door.

Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — his dates and burial added from his 1977 obituary and two death indexes (S1756): the card said he was born in Texas in November 1888, day not known, and that no record of his own after 1920, no death and no burial had been found. The grade is unchanged, because nothing new was read from an image. Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — his wife, Mary A. Henslee, and their marriage on 2 May 1918 added from a marriage index (S1760) when she was added to the Ancestry tree; the card said that any wife was not named. The grade is unchanged.

Family

Parents1961
Son of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz. His father, Herman Schultz, is not yet in this record. The notice of his brother Otto’s funeral in 1961 names a brother Carl among the survivors S1721, and the obituary of his sister Minnie Mae in January 1975 names a brother Carl Schultz of Abilene S1728; both are the machine-read text of newspaper pages, not checked on the images. His brother Philip Schultz (1893–1968) has a card; his 1968 obituary names a brother Carl among the survivors S1744.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Husband of Mary A. Henslee (November 1895 – 3 July 1986). The evidence is strong: a Texas county marriage index lists Carl R. Schultz and Mary A. Henslee, married in Taylor County, Texas, on 2 May 1918. His 1977 obituary gives the marriage as April 1917 and spells her name Hensley; the date of the index is followed here, and neither the register page nor the newspaper page has been read from an image S1760S1756. She was born in Brown County, Texas: the 1900 census page of that county, read from the image, lists Mary A., born in November 1895, as a daughter of John C. Hensley. Her obituary, in the Abilene Reporter-News of 5 and 6 July 1986, read as machine text, says she lived to 91, her last days at Earth, in Lamb County, Texas, and was buried at Elmwood Memorial Park, Abilene. She is on the Ancestry tree; she has no card here. Their children are not named here.
Weak or missing

Life

Death1891
Jesse Lee Coffman: born 28 Jan 1891 in Potosi, Taylor, Texas; died 4 Jun 1967 in Abilene, Taylor, Texas
Census1930
In April 1930 Jessie L. Coffman, 39, a public-school teacher, rented a house in Justice Precinct 5, Callahan County, Texas, with his wife Mattie J., 24, born in Texas to an Alabama-born father, and their young son; the boarder was Zona A. Moody, 27, also a teacher, whose father was also born in Alabama S1361. Mattie’s maiden name, Moody, is now confirmed by their daughter’s 1932 birth certificate S1368, so Zona was probably her sister. That is still Probable: no record names them as sisters, and the evidence is the shared surname and their Alabama-born fathers. Birth1932
The birth certificate of a daughter born at Clyde, Callahan County, filed on 1 January 1932, names her father as Jesse Lee Coffman, 40, a teacher, and her mother as Mattie Jane Moody, 25; she was the mother’s second child S1368. The certificate leaves her name blank; she is probably Jessie Loveta Coffman Riley, whose Social Security claim index names the same parents and gives her birth on 6 November 1931 S1739
Census1940
In April 1940 Jessie L. Coffman, 49, a public-school teacher with four years of college, earning $1,170 a year, rented a house in Justice Precinct 5, Taylor County, with his wife Mattie J., 34, their son, 14, and their daughter, 8 S1369

The funeral was on 6 June 1967 at Elliott’s Chapel of Memories, with burial at Elmwood Memorial Park. Among the survivors it names his brother Jim Coffman and his sister Mrs. Sue M. Atchley, both of Dudley. The notices were read as machine text on 4 October 2026; the page images have not been opened S1729
Census1929
In December 1929 the funeral notice of his sister Lucy C. Coffman Chrane names J. Lee Coffman of Eula among her brothers. The notice was read as machine text only S1732
Death2026
History of this card. 12 Oct 2026
his 1967 obituary added (S1729), and with it a date for his marriage to Mattie Jane Moody, 13 September 1924, as Probable; the card said only that the marriage had not been found. 12 Oct 2026 — his daughter Jessie Loveta named and linked to a card of her own, graded Probable (S1739); she had been left unnamed as possibly living, and the index of her death in 1989 ended that. 12 Oct 2026 — his sister Sue Mary Coffman Atchley linked when her card was written (S1740). 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 4 Oct 2026 (1 note). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed.

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: his death certificate, the 1930 and 1940 censuses and his 1942 draft card have been read from the images, and her maiden name, Moody, is on their daughter’s 1932 birth certificate, but no marriage record has been found: the date of the marriage, 13 September 1924, comes from his obituary alone. Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Married Mattie Jane Moody on 13 September 1924 in Taylor County, according to his obituary S1729. Research status

Research status: PROBABLE as a daughter of David Emily “Dee” Coffman and Mary Jane “Mollie” Wright. The evidence is strong: the index of her own Texas death certificate gives Mrs. Lucy C. Chrane, born 20 December 1886 in Texas, died 30 December 1929 at Abilene, father D. E. Coffman and mother Mollie Wright, and the Texas Death Index gives the same day of death S1717. The Abilene Daily Reporter of 31 December 1929 reports her funeral and names her parents as Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Coffman of Potosi, at whose home she had been on Christmas Day S1732. It stays Probable because the certificate image has not been read and the newspaper was read as machine text only, not from the page image.

Evidence: The index of her Texas death certificate gives Mrs. Lucy C. Chrane, born 20 December 1886 in Texas, died 30 December 1929 at Abilene, father D. E. The Abilene Daily Reporter of 31 December 1929, read as machine text, reports her funeral that day and burial at Dudley, names her parents as Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Coffman of Potosi and says she married George A. Chrane in 1905 (S1732). The evidence is strong. Weak or missing: The certificate and the censuses are read from indexes and the newspaper from machine text; no image of any of them has been read. Life

Death1929
Lucy C. Coffman Chrane died on 30 December 1929 at Abilene, Taylor County, Texas, aged 43. She was born in Texas on 20 December 1886. Both dates come from the index of her death certificate S1717. Her funeral notice says she died at home, 518 Vine Street, on the Monday night, and that the funeral was held on 31 December 1929 at the Dudley Church of Christ, with burial in the Dudley cemetery, Callahan County Probable confirm or correct → S1732
Death1929
Her 1929 funeral notice says she was born at Potosi on 20 December 1885, and a family history printed in 1940 gives the same date S1732. That is a year before the certificate index, which is followed here because her printed age at death, 43, fits 1886; the conflict stays open until the certificate image or a census page is read. The 1940 history also puts her death on 30 December 1930, a year late, and names her husband as George A. Chrane.

Family

Marriage1883
Wife of George Albert Chrane (1883–1970). They married in 1905, by her 1929 funeral notice, which gives the year only and was read as machine text Probable confirm or correct → S1732. The indexes of the 1910 census of Callahan County, Texas, and of the 1920 census list Lucy C. as his wife, with their children S1717, and the index of his World War I draft registration names Lucy Caroline Chrane as his nearest relative S1723. The link is Probable, because no image has been read. Their children Lucille Odelle, Carey Oletta, Leo George and Troy Litton have cards; their other children are not named here.
Parents1924
Her parents’ family photograph of about 1924 names a “Lucy” among those standing S108. She was living then, but the caption gives no surname, so it is not settled that the Lucy in the photograph is this daughter.

J., and belonged to St. Paul Methodist Church; it names as survivors his sister Mrs. Minnie Mae Coffman and his brothers W. J. and Carl S1744. He was buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Abilene: the death certificate, read from the image, enters his removal to Abilene on 28 September 1968 and that cemetery, without a date of burial, and the obituary calls it the Oddfellow Cemetery S1763.
Census2026
History of this card. 12 Oct 2026
card written when he was added to the family tree as a son of Pauline Augusta Betcher, from the Texas death index, the 1910 census index and his 1968 obituary (S1744). Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — the years of his brother Carl (1888–1977) added from Carl’s 1977 obituary and two death indexes (S1756). Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — his first wife Ethnye Wilson and the marriage of 16 March 1921 written in, with their son William Phil Schultz (1924–2019), after both were added to the Ancestry tree (S1761, S1762); the card had called his wife an open question and had left her two names unreconciled. Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — regraded from Probable to Confirmed as a son of Herman Schultz and Pauline Betcher, on his Texas death certificate, read from the image on 7 October (S1763); the card had said that every record was an index or newspaper text. His burial in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, which had rested on the obituary, is now on the certificate. The 1943 marriage of his former wife to Walter R. Johnson is written out, and her identity as Mrs. Ethnye Johnson is graded Confirmed apart from the 1921 marriage, which stays Probable (S1761). Later the same day, 12 Oct 2026 — the 1950 census page of Haskell, Texas, written in for Walter R. Johnson (S1761): address and work Confirmed from the image, his identity as Ethnye’s husband Probable, as no wife is on the page.

Parents
Confirmed Son of Pauline Augusta Betcher Schultz. His father, Herman Schultz, is not yet in this record.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → His first wife was Ethnye Wilson (27 July 1901 – 9 December 1969), whose name the indexes also spell Ethmye and Ethney. A Taylor County marriage index gives their marriage on 16 March 1921, and the indexes of the 1930 and 1940 censuses list her as the wife in his household at Abilene. The marriage is Probable, on strong evidence, because the 1921 entry is an index line and the page has not been read. They were divorced before 11 September 1943. On that day, at Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota, Ethnye Schultz of Abilene, 41 and divorced, married Walter R. Johnson, 44 and also divorced; the state certificate was read from the image. That the Mrs. Ethnye Johnson who died in 1969 was Philip’s former wife is Confirmed: that certificate gives her the name Schultz, her Texas death certificate, also read from the image, gives her maiden name Wilson with W. R. Johnson as informant and her burial on 11 December 1969 at Kingsland Cemetery, Kingsland, Llano County, and her obituary, in machine-read text, names her son William Phil Schultz and says her husband W. R. Johnson had been with the Haskell National Bank. In 1950 a Walter R. Johnson, married, born about 1900 in Texas and cashier at the National Bank, lived at 806 North 11th Street, Haskell, Haskell County, Texas; the census page was read from the image (enumeration district 104-3, sheet 72, line 18). The address and his work are Confirmed from that page. That he was Ethnye’s husband is Probable, on strong evidence: the name, the town and the bank agree with her obituary, but no wife is enumerated in the household, so Ethnye is not on the page and nothing on it ties the household to her. She and Walter R. Johnson are on the Ancestry tree and have no cards here; no dates of birth or death are given for him, because the man they probably belong to is tied to him by name and age only S1761. Philip’s obituary says he married Dorothy Lee Hulsey at Abilene on 11 October 1935. She was a later wife, and that date conflicts with the 1940 census index, which still lists Ethnye in his household; his death certificate calls him married and does not name his wife S1744S1763.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Philip and Ethnye had a son, William Phil Schultz (22 June 1924, Abilene – 21 November 2019; buried at Dallas). The evidence is strong: his mother’s 1969 obituary names him, his father’s 1968 obituary names a son “W. P. of Dallas”, the index of his 1942 draft card names Philip Schultz, and the indexes of the 1930 and 1940 censuses list “Phil” and “Philip Jr.” in the household. It is Probable because no image has been read, and the draft card index gives his birth in June where the Find a Grave index says July. He is on the Ancestry tree and has no card here. His children are not named S1762S1761S1744.
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the death certificate is the only record of his own read from an image, its facts came from the hospital’s records, and its image is not yet in Documents; the 1910 census and the obituaries are an index and machine-read newspaper text; Abilene as his birthplace is in the obituary only; the certificate gives no date of burial and does not name his wife; his 1921 marriage is an index line; the date the obituary gives for his later marriage conflicts with the 1940 census index; his son’s birth month differs between two indexes. Evidence: A Texas marriage index lists Otto H. Schultz and Victoria Julia Galbraith; the index of the 1920 census lists her, aged 25 and born in Missouri, as daughter-in-law in Pauline Schultz's household; two notices of January 1980 give her birth on 17 September 1894 at Carthage, Missouri, and her death on 11 January 1980 at Abilene (S1747); her husband's 1961 funeral notice says he married Victoria Galbraith at Abilene in 1918 (S1721). The evidence is strong. Weak or missing: Every record is an index or machine-read newspaper text, and no image has been read; both 1980 notices print her husband as Otto M. and give two ages, 87 and 85; the month of the marriage and the burial are in the obituary only. Victoria Julia Galbraith Schultz died on 11 January 1980 at Abilene, Taylor County, Texas, in Hendrick Medical Center. She was born at Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri, on 17 September 1894. The dates and places are from two notices in the Abilene Reporter-News, of 12 and 14 January 1980. Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Wife of Otto Herman Schultz. According to her obituary she came to Abilene in 1905, married in August 1918, and worked with her husband at Schultz Dry Goods; it gives her burial at Elmwood Memorial Park, which rests on the newspaper text alone S1747. Her children and granddaughters are not named here.
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: every record is an index or machine-read newspaper text, and no image has been read; the marriage record itself has not been read, and the month of the marriage is in the obituary only; the two 1980 notices disagree on her age and misprint her husband’s initial. Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Wife of Joseph Franklin Coffman. The 1940 Kauffman-Coffman family book, page 567, calls her his second wife and puts the marriage in 1910; no marriage record has been found, and the year rests on the book alone S1748. Her husband’s son Joseph Franklin Coffman Jr. (1908–1990) was born before that marriage, and the index of his California death record gives his mother’s maiden name as Stanley: he is her stepson, not her son S1753. Her children are not named here.
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: every record is an index, and no image has been read; no marriage record has been found; no obituary of her own was found in a search on 6 October 2026; the year of the marriage and her place as second wife rest on one compiled book. Life

Death1979
Sue Mary Coffman Atchley died on 18 January 1979, aged 85. She was born at Potosi, Taylor County, Texas, on 10 May 1893. The birth date and place are in the index of her Social Security claim and in her obituary; the Social Security Death Index and the Find a Grave index are read with them S1740. Her obituary, in the Abilene Reporter-News of 19 January 1979, says she died at Shady Oaks Lodge No. 2; it does not name the town, so no place of death is given here.
Burial1913
According to the obituary she attended Sabinal College and Abilene Christian College in 1913–15 and was a charter member of the Dudley Church of Christ. She is buried at Dudley Cemetery, Dudley, Callahan County, Texas: Probable, and the evidence is strong, because the funeral notice of 20 January 1979 and the Find a Grave index agree; both are machine-read or index text, and no stone, cemetery record or page image has been read S1740.

Family

Marriage1917
Wife of Leo Litton Atchley. Her obituary says they married at Potosi on 29 May 1917 and lived at Dudley from 1919; the Texas marriage index names the couple without a date S1740. Children1918
Mother of Daisy Bertha Atchley Morgan (1918–1989) and Etta Pearl Atchley Dye (1922–2009), both named as her daughters in her obituary. Her son is not named here.

He died of pneumonia at Abilene on 2 June 1964 and was buried at Potosi; the certificate names his parents as Wm. A. Bowles and Ionabell Brock, and gives his birth as 11 August 1887 S514.
Census1958

Burial1898
His widow, Jewel Ross Bowles, born 28 September 1898 in Texas, a daughter of W. D. Ross and Lula Greenway, died at Abilene on 8 June 1974, still at 1357 Sycamore, and was buried at Potosi S658.
Military1917
His two draft cards give different birthplaces. In 1917, a farmer on Abilene Route 2, he gave St. Paul, Arkansas, and claimed exemption on grounds of conscience S684; in 1942, at Potosi with his wife Jewel, he gave Cass, Arkansas S685. Both give 11 August 1886.
Census1950
In 1950 Alfred S. Bowles, 65, born in Arkansas, was still farming his own land in Taylor County with Jewel, 52; the index left her out. Next door was John W. Bowles, 47, a farmer, with Ethel and Verna; how he was related is not known S743.
Record1920
The Texas birth index records a child of Alfred Bowles born in Taylor County on 1 February 1920, certificate 11378, not yet named in the index S744 Probable confirm or correct →. This is probably their son Dixon, who is in the 1930 household but was not yet born when the 1920 census was taken in January. What is weak: the index gives no name, and the certificate has not been read.
Census1940
In 1940 Jewel, 41, born in Texas, was on the farm with him, in the same house as in 1935 S1320
Death1964
His obituary in the Abilene Reporter-News of 3 June 1964 says he died at 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Stewart Nursing Home, 2201 Swenson, aged 76; that he came from Arkansas at the age of five; and that he married Jewel Ross at Abilene on 10 December 1916 Confirmed S1567. It gives his birth as 11 August 1887, a year later than the age on his daughter’s birth certificate implies. It names eight sisters and three brothers as survivors, Tom, Tony of Phoenix and Debs of Los Angeles among them, which agrees with the family on William Anderson Bowles’s card.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Jewel as a baby: in June 1900 Jewel, born in September 1898 in Texas, was the daughter of William D. Ross, a farmer born in Alabama, in Precinct 1, Taylor County S1319. Evidence: her birth month and year and her father’s name agree with her death certificate. What is weak or missing: her mother’s given name on the 1900 page reads Alice(?) T., not the Lula Greenway of the certificate, so her mother’s name is unsettled. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Weak or missing: Only the index was read, and it gives her parents’ surnames, not their given names; her husband’s given name and their marriage are not found. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED as a son of William Anderson Bowles and Iona Belle Brock Confirmed. His obituary names a twin brother, Tom, and seven more brothers and sisters who are each recorded here as children of W. A. Bowles and Iona Brock S1569. Earlier evidence: the index of his Texas death certificate names his father as W. A. Bowles and his mother as “Belle Broach” S904; his own 1942 draft card, read from the image, gives his birth on 26 June 1902 S934; in 1940 and 1950 he farmed beside his brother Alfred S935S743. What is still weak: the death certificate itself has not been read from the image, “Broach” is read as Brock, ; the birth date he shares with his brother Thomas L. Bowles is explained, since both men’s obituaries call them twins. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’ to confirm or correct it.

What is weak or missing: a yearbook name key gives only the surname BOWLES, twice (Ancestry record 1444685602); his brother Robert Anthony was also in Abilene schools, so it is not attached to him. What would settle it: a page with given names, or an enrolment record for John W. Bowles.

Life

Birth1907
Born 27 July 1907, Texas S186
Death1991
Died 18 January 1991
Census1930
In 1930 she was 21, single, a waitress in Amarillo, living with her sister Jean and Harry Julius, the cafe manager and proprietor S615.
Military1942
Elmo's own 1942 draft card gives his full name as Elmo David Blackburn, born 15 March 1904, of 1601 B Pierce Street, Amarillo, working for Southwestern Public Service Company S717. The card gives Amarillo as his birthplace, but that is self-reported and not yet settled. The 1940 Amarillo directory lists “Blackburn Elmo (Lily)”, a serviceman for the same company, at 1601b Pierce S720. The Texas birth index records their daughter Iona Beth Blackburn, born 26 April 1938 in Potter County, with her mother entered as Lily Olene Bowles and her father as David St. Elmo Blackburn S718. It is the first state record found that names Lily Olene Bowles as Elmo's wife, though no marriage record has yet been read. In 1950 Elmo, 46, married, ran his own electric shop from 2804 Taylor, Amarillo; no wife was listed with him on that sheet S719.
Census1910
Elmo's parents were probably David J. Blackburn and Ruth E. Blackburn Probable confirm or correct →: the 1910 census of Salem Township, Lewis County, Missouri, read from the image, lists Elmo D., 6, son, in the household of David J. Blackburn, 38, a farmer, and his wife Ruth E., 32, the mother of three children, all living, with Bessie, 14, and Clarence, 11, all born in Missouri S873. His son's 1933 death certificate also gives Elmo's birthplace as Missouri S697. What is weak: nothing read ties the boy of 1910 to Lily's husband beyond his name, middle initial and age, and his 1942 draft card gives Amarillo as his birthplace S717; Ruth's maiden name, given in family trees as Tate, and both parents' birth days and death dates are on no document read. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence.

Parents
Marriage1904
Married Elmo D. Blackburn (born 15 March 1904, by his own draft card S717) Probable confirm or correct →: the 1940 Amarillo, Texas census has Elmo Blackburn, 36, at 1601 Pierce with his wife Lily and a daughter named Iona B., after Lily's mother Iona Belle, and the 1949 Amarillo directory lists “Blackburn Elmo D (Lily)”. What is weak: the census gives the wife's age as 22, ten years off Lily's 1907 birth, and no marriage record has been found.
Children1933
Her son Harald Dean Blackburn, a premature twin, died at St Anthony's Hospital in Amarillo on 8 December 1933, one day old. His death certificate names his parents as Elmo D. Blackburn and Lillie Bowles, born in Texas S697. It is the first record found that names her as Elmo's wife.

His wife Opal's mother was probably Lena L. Bethany, 38, and his wife Lena L., 39, both born Arkansas S885; the three were together in Amarillo in 1920 S886. The Texas birth index records a son of Warren Debs Bowles, born in Potter County in 1944, with his mother entered as Willie Opal Bethaney S887. What is weak: the census does not say Lena is Opal's mother, and a stepmother would be listed the same way; her maiden name, given in family trees as Stringer, and her dates are on no document read, and the trees' Texas birthplace for her conflicts with the census. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence.

The Tennessee marriage records index has Dean Hebron and Marian Chenault married on 28 July 1926 in Sumner County, and a newspaper marriage index, made from a notice in the Nashville Banner of 11 July 1926, names her father as Charles Chenault S1680. Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED son of James Harris Timberman Sr. and his wife Louise E. Harbauer, born August 1893 at Wilkes-Barre. Evidence: the 1900 census, read from the image, lists “Albert, Aug 1893” as a son in the household S139; his 1916 Pennsylvania service card, read from the image, gives him as 22, born Wilkes-Barre, a reporter, with next of kin “Dr. J. H. Timberman, Father” S200; his father’s 1919 obituaries name him “of this city”, a lieutenant of field artillery just home from Germany S1649. Added to the family tree on 10 October 2026

Family

Marriage1919
An index of newspaper marriage notices has the wedding three times: Miss Nancy Mai Harsh, of Castalian Springs, Tennessee, and Albert N. Timberman, licence dated 31 December 1919, in the Wilkes-Barre papers of 1 and 2 January 1920 S1658. The notices themselves have not been read. The Tennessee marriage register index entry found since is set out below.
Marriage1919
An index of the Tennessee state marriage registers now has the entry: Albert N. Timberman and Nancy Mai Harsh, 31 December 1919, Sumner County, Tennessee S1664. Only the index was read, not the register page, so it is not settled whether 31 December 1919 is the day of the licence, as the Wilkes-Barre papers have it, or the day of the wedding; the family tree enters it as the marriage date. The register writes her “Nancy Mai”. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → His wife. He probably married Nannie Mai Harsh, a daughter of Louise Bell Martin Harsh. Evidence: the 1920 census lists Nancy Timberman, 25, born in Tennessee, as the wife of Albert M. Timberman at Wilkes-Barre S1652. What is weak or missing: the census was read from the index, not the image, and prints his initial as M, not N; no marriage record has been found. A Harsh–Timberman marriage record would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Not found
What else is missing: the census gives his birth month and year only; the obituaries were read as machine-read text, not from the page; his death has not been found and none is entered. His brothers: James Harris Timberman Jr. and George W. Timberman.

Life

Birth1866
Born 13 November 1866, Tennessee; the Louisa, 3, of the 1870 census and Luisa B., 13, of 1880 S202S207
Death1935
Died 13 February 1935 by her death certificate (the newspapers say Tuesday the 12th; see the 8 October notes below) at 250 College Drive, Abilene, Texas, and buried at Gallatin; her death certificate names both parents S191
Burial1934
Nathan died on 10 September 1934 at Gaston Hospital, Lebanon, and was buried at Gallatin. His death certificate names his parents as George Harsh and Talitha Newby S503; in 1870 he was 10, in their household in Davidson County, where George was a dry goods merchant born in Pennsylvania S504.
Census1880
In 1880 Nathan, 19, was at home in the 1st Civil District of Sumner County with his father George Harsh, 53, a farmer born in Pennsylvania to a father from “Offenheim”, Germany; George's wife then was Elizabeth, 30, and a stepson, James Polk, 6, was in the house S588.
Death1935
Confirmed Four newspaper notices of her death: the Abilene Daily Reporter (13 February 1935, p. 5), the Nashville Banner (13 February, p. 12, and 14 February, p. 18) and The Tennessean (14 February, p. 14) S1613. “In Abilene to spend the winter, Mrs. Louise M. Harsh, 68-year-old resident of Gallatin, Tenn., died unexpectedly Tuesday at the home of a daughter, 250 College Drive”, at 2:15 p.m., after three weeks of slight illness. The daughter was Mrs. Walter H. Adams, whose husband was dean of students at Abilene Christian College. She was the widow of Nathan J. Harsh. Survivors as printed in Nashville: two daughters, Mrs. Adams and Mrs. A. M. Timberman of Nashville; three sons, Kenneth of Watertown, Tennessee, and Joe and Richard Harsh of Gallatin; two sisters, Mrs. Timberman and “Mrs. Nancy Rutherford” of Nashville; and a brother, Joe Martin of Memphis. Five granddaughters are counted, not named here. Her body left Abilene by train on the Wednesday morning; Kiker-Knight Mortuary had charge there. The funeral was on Friday 15 February: at the Church of Christ in Gallatin by the Abilene paper, at 10 o’clock at her sister’s home in Nashville by the Nashville papers; burial was at Gallatin beside her husband. A brother and a sister named here are already on this record as children of Joseph D. Martin, so her parentage now rests on two records. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not from the page image.
Death1934
Confirmed Two slips in these notices, noted so they are not copied. The Abilene paper says her husband “died last October 17”; his death certificate gives 10 September 1934, which stands S503 (17 October was their wedding day in 1888 S401, which may be how the date crept in). One Nashville notice of 13 February names her brother as “John Martin”; the next day’s papers print Joe Martin of Memphis S1613. The sister printed as “Mrs. Nancy Rutherford” is taken up on the card of Mary Jane Martin Rutherford.

Family

Parents
Marriage1860
Married Nathan James Harsh (born 2 December 1860, died 1934) S204
Marriage1888
Married 17 October 1888 at Gallatin, as Louisa B. Martin to N. J. Harsh, by R. W. Harsh, minister S401. She and Nathan farmed in the 1st Civil District of Sumner County for forty years: in 1900 with four children, Kenneth, Joe D., Nannie M. and Nathan S402; in 1910 she had borne 8 children, 5 living, now including Louise B. and Richard K. S403; in 1920 on Harsh Road as Louise M. S404; and in 1930, aged 63, with her son Kenneth's family S405. The 1900 census gives her birth as May 1867, against 13 November 1866 on her death certificate; not settled.
Children1894
Her daughter Nannie Mai Harsh is identified: born 7 January 1894 at Castalian Springs; died 1 January 1982 at Abilene, Texas, as Nancy Timberman. Her birth record and her death certificate give the same birth date and name both parents, Nathan J. Harsh and Louise B. Martin S1652. She was probably the wife of Albert N. Timberman of Wilkes-Barre, a son of James Harris Timberman Sr.: the 1920 census lists Nancy Timberman, 25, born in Tennessee, as the wife of Albert M. Timberman there. That would make her the “Mrs. A. M. Timberman” of the 1935 notices. What is weak: all three records were read from the index, not the images; no marriage record has been found; the census prints her husband’s initial as M, not N; and the 1900 census gives her birth as April 1894, against 7 January on the two vital records. She and Albert now have cards of their own: Nannie Mai Harsh and Albert N. Timberman. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → The day she died: probably Tuesday 12 February 1935, not the 13th. Evidence: the Abilene paper printed on Wednesday the 13th says she died “Tuesday” at 2:15 p.m., the two Nashville papers say “Tuesday afternoon”, and a Nashville paper already carried the news on the 13th S1613. Against it: her death certificate, as we have it, gives 13 February S191, and the date at the top of this card is left as the certificate has it. What is weak: the newspapers were read from page text, not the images, and the certificate date has not been read again from its image. What would settle it: the certificate image, or the Gallatin gravestone. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Two Mrs. Timbermans. The Abilene paper calls “Mrs. Nancy Timberman of Gallatin” a daughter who travelled home with the body; the Nashville papers call Mrs. Nancy Timberman her sister, at whose home the funeral was held, and list a daughter separately as “Mrs. A. M. Timberman of Nashville” S1613. Our best reading is that both are right: the sister is Nancy Louise Martin Timberman, and the daughter is probably Nannie M. Harsh, born in April 1894 S402, married to an A. M. Timberman. What is weak or missing: no marriage record of Nannie Harsh has been found, and one newspaper may simply have confused the two women. What would settle it: a Tennessee marriage record for Nannie Harsh and a Timberman, about 1912–1930. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Birth1868
Born 8 September 1868, Sumner County, Tennessee; Mary, 1, in the 1870 census and Mary, 11, in 1880 S202S207
Census1860
Philip Harsh Rutherford's parents were probably C. C. Rutherford and Lydia Rutherford, probably née Harsh Probable confirm or correct →: the 1860 census of the 5th District, Davidson County, Tennessee (post office Nashville), read from the image, lists P. H. Rutherford, 2, directly after C. C. Rutherford, 27, a farmer, and Lydia Rutherford, 25, with Griffith Rutherford, 1, in the household of Nathan Harsh, which fits a Harsh-born mother and Philip's middle name S880. What is weak: the 1860 census states no relationships; no document read names Philip's parents, gives Lydia's maiden name or spells out C. C. (Cheselton Cathey in family trees), and the birth and death dates offered for both are unsourced. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. Know more? Use “Add to this record”

Family

Parents
Marriage1858
Married Philip Harsh Rutherford (1858–1914) about 1890; the family history gives her birth as 8 September 1868 and her father as Joseph Martin of Sumner County, and lists eight children S408. In 1900 they farmed in the 10th Civil District of Sumner County with son Homer S409; the two eldest children were born in Texas. Their daughter Nannie Bell died at Nashville on 20 August 1906, aged 12; her death certificate names her mother as Mary Martin S410. In 1910 they owned a farm on Long Hollow Pike S411. By January 1920 she was a widow running a dairy farm near Cordell, Washita County, Oklahoma S412, and she stayed in Cordell with her youngest children Martin and Mary Bell through 1930, 1940 and 1950 S413S414S415. The records call her husband P. H. or Philip H.; the “Mrs. T. H. Rutherford” on the back of her childhood photograph is taken to be a misread P. The licence was issued on 31 December 1890 S572; her death is not yet sourced.
Marriage1890
The Sumner County licence for P. H. Rutherford and Mary Martin was issued on 31 December 1890 S572. In 1940 her son Martin Rutherford, born at Gallatin on 2 April 1908, gave her, Mrs. P. H. Rutherford, as his contact on his draft card; they lived at 417 West 11th, Cordell S568.

Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → In 1870 Phillip H. Rutherford, 12, born in Tennessee, lived in the 18th Civil District of Davidson County with Lydia A. Rutherford, 35, born in Pennsylvania, in the household of Phillip Harsh, 73, a retired merchant born in Germany S1311. Evidence: his name and age, and Lydia again living with a Harsh household, as in 1860. What is weak or missing: the census states no relationships, so Lydia’s maiden name Harsh is still inference. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Probably the “Mrs. Nancy Rutherford of Nashville” named as a surviving sister in the Nashville notices of Louise Harsh’s death in February 1935 S1613. Evidence: she is the only one of Joseph D. Martin’s daughters known to have married a Rutherford, and she was living in 1940 S568. What is weak: the notices print the given name Nancy, which belongs to her sister Mrs. Timberman, named in the same sentence, and place her at Nashville, where no other record yet puts her; in 1940 she was at Cordell. If the reading is right she was alive in February 1935. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not from the page image. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Census1929
In 1929 Arthur H. and Martha M. McConnell were already at 716 Lincoln Place, Spokane, where he was a superintendent S1306
Census1880
Confirmed In June 1880 her future husband Arthur, 7, at school, born in Iowa, was in the Iowa City household of his father Wm. C. McConnell, 48, a carpenter born in Pennsylvania, with Samantha, 51, and Chas. E., Lizzie and Frank S1545. Inconsistency: Arthur’s 1938 death certificate names his mother Cynthia Kennedy; this census has Samantha. Best guess: Samantha, probably born Osborn Probable confirm or correct →, his father’s wife in 1880, eight years after his birth. Evidence: the same 1880 household holds the head’s mother-in-law, surname Osborne, 71 S1545, and when Arthur’s brother Frank married in 1890 the return gave his father as Wm. C. McConnell and his mother’s maiden name as Osborn S1614. The 1938 certificate’s informant was Martha herself, who married Arthur in 1911 and probably never knew his mother; no other record read has the name Kennedy, so it is unlikely to be the maiden name. What is weak: the census does not say that Samantha was Arthur’s mother, and she was about 43 when he was born, so a stepmother is still possible; Frank’s return gives no given name for the mother; the 1870 census has not been read. What would settle it: an Iowa birth or baptism for Arthur, the 1870 Iowa City household, or any record naming William C. McConnell’s wife about 1872. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. Ethel outlived him by ten years; she died at Greensburg on 19 February 1957 and was buried at St. Clair Cemetery S423.
Children1898
Their daughter: Eleanor E. (or G.) Proeger, born February 1898 in Pennsylvania Confirmed. She is in her parents' household in all three censuses: in 1900, aged 2 S418; in 1910, aged 12, at school, written “Eleanor E.” S419; and in 1920, aged 21, single, a conservatory student, written “Eleanor G.” S420. The two censuses give her second initial differently, so it is shown as E. (or G.). The 1910 return says Ethel had borne one child, and Eleanor is the only one in any census.
Parents1849
Ethel's parents Confirmed: her father Edward Gregg, born 11 September 1849 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, a planing-mill worker at Carmichaels, Greene County, in 1880; and her mother Elizabeth “Lizzie” Darling, born about 1854 in Virginia. Ethel's 1957 death certificate names Edward Gregg and Elizabeth Darling as her parents S423, and the 1880 census has Edward, 30, wife Lizzie, 26, and daughters Ethel, 4, and Mabel, 1, in one household S416; both read from the images, and FamilySearch indexes the same household (1:1:MWFF-3W2). Her sister Mabel Gregg, born 17 November 1878 at Carmichaels, Confirmed: Mabel's own 1968 death certificate names the same parents S931. Lizzie died at Pittsburgh on 30 May 1891 S925 and Edward there on 19 September 1905 S927; both were buried at Carmichaels. What is weak: Edward's and Lizzie's marriage, about 1875, has not been found.
Marriage1977
The 1977 Virginia marriage record of their granddaughter Jane Shrum, born 1932, of Greensburg, names her father as Paul Shrum and gives her mother’s maiden name as Eleanore Proeger Confirmed S1136. That puts in writing the Shrum–Proeger marriage proposed above. Eleanor’s place as this couple’s daughter still rests on the census and on Ethel’s death certificate.

Open questions

Probable
Probably their daughter Eleanor married: in 1940 she was Eleanor Shrum, 41, born Pennsylvania, in Greensburg with her husband Paul L. Shrum, 41, attorney at law, and their children William, 10, and Jane, 7 Probable confirm or correct → S999. Evidence: Paul L. Shrum was the informant on Ethel's 1957 death certificate at Greensburg S423, and the age and birthplace fit. More evidence, 8 October 2026: his 1947 obituary names “one daughter, Mrs. Paul L. Shrum” S1605, and the 1977 record below names Paul Shrum’s wife as Eleanore Proeger. Weak: the obituary does not give the daughter’s first name and was read as OCR text, and no Shrum–Proeger marriage record has been read; it stays Probable until a written proof argument is accepted. Pennsylvania death index
Record1918
On his 1918 draft card he was a self-employed designer and inventor of machinery, living at 6461½ Aurelia Street, Pittsburgh, with his wife May Stark Proeger S564.
Census1904
In 1904 the Pittsburgh directory lists L. Walter Proeger at 707 North St. Clair, next door to Julius Proeger at 709; Julius H., a bookkeeper, is listed at 137 Bigham S1331
Death1943
Confirmed His death notices, Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph, 29 April 1943 (p. 25), and The Pittsburgh Press, 28 April 1943 (p. 26): he died on Tuesday 27 April 1943 at 3:30 p.m., “husband of the late May Stark Proeger”, and father of a daughter and of Corp. Luis Walter Proeger Jr. The funeral was from the John Kekilty Funeral Home, 605 Brushton Avenue, on Friday 30 April at 2 o’clock, and the members of Philanthropy Lodge No. 225, F. & A. M. (the Freemasons) were invited S1606. The Press spells him “Louis”. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not from the page images; the “F.” of the lodge line is unclear in that text. The notices name no parents.

Family

Son of Julius Karl Proeger and Minnie Kochendoerfer; his Social Security application names both parents
Marriage1883
Married May Shepherd Stark (14 February 1883, at Wellsville, Ohio, by a Social Security index entry S1616; her death certificate says Ohio only – 13 December 1940 Pittsburgh S1615), November 1916. In 1930 he managed a laundry and owned his house at Swissvale S356
Marriage2026
History of this card. 8 Oct 2026
the date of the 1944 marriage-licence application (S1546) had been withheld while the applicant, his daughter May Stark Proeger, might have been living; a Social Security entry gives her death in 1980 (S1617) and the date is shown. 13 Oct 2026 — one note on this card ended with the words “added” and a date; it was added on: 25 Sep 2026 (1 note). The dated endings were taken off, and nothing else in the notes was changed. 13 Oct 2026 — the “Research status” line gave the day this card was added and entered in the family tree, 24 Sep 2026. Open questions

Probable
Probable confirm or correct → May’s parents were probably William G. Stark, a Pittsburgh laundryman born in Pennsylvania of a German father, and Mary B., born in Ohio: in 1910 May S. Stark, 27, single, born in Ohio, lived with them and her sister Cora E., 20, at 221 Mathilda Street, Pittsburgh S1313. Evidence: her age, her Ohio birth and her daughter’s Social Security record naming the mother May S. Stark. Her death certificate, read from the image on 8 October 2026, names her father Wm. Stark, born in Pennsylvania, and her mother Mary Shepherd, born in Ohio S1615, which fits this household and explains her middle name. A Social Security index entry for May herself gives the same birth date, at Wellsville, Ohio, and her parents as William G. Stark and Mary A. Shepherd S1616: that supplies the father’s middle initial, which the certificate lacks. What is weak or missing: no Proeger is on the 1910 page; the certificate’s parents were given by her husband; the Social Security entry is an index, not the paper itself, and has the mother as Mary A. where the census has Mary B.; and the November 1916 marriage application, which should name the bride’s parents and their address, has not been read. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → An application for a licence to marry Samuel A. Wilson was filed on 27 March 1944 by a May S. Proeger S1546. It is not taken as his wife May Shepherd Stark, whose death certificate (husband Luis Walter Proeger, informant) puts her death on 13 December 1940 S1615. Best guess: the applicant is their daughter May Stark Proeger, who is in the 1930 and 1940 households; the application was filed eleven months after her father died. Evidence: the index to the application lists Luis W. Proeger and May Stark with a child May Stark Proeger S1546, and a Social Security index entry for May Stark Proeger, daughter of Luis W. Proeger and May S. Stark, gives her later name as May P. Wilson; she died in April 1980 S1617. What is weak: both are indexes; only the cover of the application was read from the image, and it gives no age or parents. What would settle it: the application’s inside pages, which give the applicant’s age and parents. Entered as a best guess under the family’s 6 October 2026 rule: conflicts are recorded, marked, not held back.

Life

Birth1888
Born 7 April 1888, Pennsylvania (the death certificate says 1889); died 28 February 1958, Memphis, Tennessee
Death1958
Confirmed Two Memphis papers carried her obituary: the Memphis Press-Scimitar of 28 February 1958 (p. 26) and the Commercial Appeal of 1 March 1958 (p. 30). Mrs. Carolina P. Ross of 22 South McLean died at John Gaston Hospital aged 68, “widow of Charles W. Ross, accountant who died in 1942”. She was born in Pittsburgh, had lived in Memphis ten years and belonged to Madison Heights Methodist Church. They name her son Karl P. Ross of Memphis and her daughter Mrs. Robert Yates of Pittsburgh; National Funeral Home had charge S1591. An age of 68 fits a birth in 1889, the year on her death certificate, better than the 1888 shown above; the year is still open. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not checked word for word against the page image. Know more? Use “Add to this record”
Census1900
In 1900 her future husband, Charlie Ross, born August 1880 in Indiana, was a farm laborer in the household of his father Perry Ross, a farmer born in Ohio, and his mother Tilitha, in Clay Township, Bartholomew County, Indiana, which fits the Columbus birthplace on his 1942 draft card S1481
Death1947
Confirmed Named as his sister in the obituary of Fred A. Proeger, Latrobe Bulletin, 9 October 1947: “Mrs. Caroline Ross … of Pittsburgh” S1605. Read from the newspaper page text (OCR), not from the page image.

Daughter of Julius Karl Proeger and Minnie Kochendoerfer; her Tennessee death certificate (58-08564) names her father Julius Karl S182
Marriage1914
Married Charles W. Ross, about September 1914 (the date still needs a source; certificate 49141 is her daughter's marriage S502); in 1930 they were in Pittsburgh S355
Marriage1939
Virginia marriage certificate 49141 is her daughter's: Katharine Charlotte Ross, born at Beaver Falls, married Robert Brame Yates at Kernstown, Virginia, on 30 December 1939. It names her parents as Charles W. Ross and “Caroline Progger” of Pittsburgh S502.
Children1915
Her first child, Karl Proeger Ross, was born on 14 September 1915 at College Hill, Big Beaver Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. His birth certificate gives his father as Charlie Ross, 35, an assistant auditor born in Indiana, and his mother as Caroline Proeger, 27, born in Pittsburgh Confirmed S958. Her age there fits a birth in 1888, not 1889.
Marriage1880
Her husband Charles W. Ross, an accountant born in Indiana on 11 August 1880, died at Latrobe on 16 November 1942, aged 62, and was buried at Woodlawn, Pittsburgh; the certificate names his wife Caroline, 55 Confirmed S1036.
Marriage1942
On 27 April 1942 her husband, signing as Charlie W. Ross, registered for the draft: born 11 August 1880 at Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana, living at the Hotel Loyal, Latrobe, and working for Stupakoff Ceramic and Mfg. Co. Confirmed S1045. Oddly, the card was registered by a Luzerne County board at Wyoming, Pennsylvania, not in Westmoreland County; the card does not say why.

Weak: no record joins the 1930 household to the Steubenville man, and Henrietta is not yet on the tree. Know more? Use “Add to this record” S1495

Research status

Research status: CONFIRMED, for his identity and for his parentage. His identity: U.S. passport applications of 1917–1921 and a 1917 consular registration give Julius (H.) Proeger, born 29 July 1867, Pittsburgh, wife Ida Waggoner Proeger; the Pennsylvania county marriages have Julius Proeger and Ida Waggoner, 12 June 1889, Pittsburgh; and two Tampa papers report his death on 17 September 1945 S1550. His parentage: his mother’s obituaries of April 1912 name her four sons, Julius, Jr., Fred, William and Walter, beside three daughters S1654; his 1889 marriage licence calls him Julius Proeger Jr, of Uniontown, and her death notice asks the Uniontown papers to copy it S537; and in his own 1919 passport application he states that his father Julius Proeger was born in Württemberg and was then living at Pittsburgh S180. What is weak: the 1912 obituaries were read as machine-read text, not from the page images, and they give Julius Jr. no address; his 1945 obituaries name no parent. Know more? Life

Birth1867
Born 29 July 1867, Pittsburgh; married Ida Elizabeth Waggoner, 12 June 1889, Pittsburgh
Death1945
Died 17 September 1945, Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida
Death1945
Died 17 September 1945 in a Tampa hospital, Hillsborough County, Florida; cremated after a Christian Science service S1550. Not the same man as Julius Gustav Proeger of Wooster, Ohio (died 1950)
Census1910
In 1910 he was a clerk at 1836 Lang Avenue, Pittsburgh (Ward 19), aged 42, married 21 years, and gave both parents as born in Germany. The household was Ida W., 39, and their only child, son Edgar W., 19 S456.
Census1884
The earliest record of him at work is the Pittsburgh directory of 1884: “Proeger Julius H, clk, Virginia, 32d wd”, on the line below his father, a pattern maker on Virginia Avenue S1766. He was about 16. He is a clerk again in 1889 and in 1910, and no record read here gives him a glass trade.
Census1922
In the 1920s he was a salesman at Colón, Panama, and a Freemason of Chagres Lodge in the Canal Zone, raised in 1922 and suspended in August 1928; his lodge card repeats his birth as Pittsburgh, 29 July 1867 S559. A June 1891 parish register baptises his son Edgar Wagner Proeger, born 22 June 1890 S560.
Birth1919
On 3 November 1919 he landed at New York with Ida on the S.S. Tivives from Cristóbal, Canal Zone, giving his birth as Pittsburgh, 29 July 1867, and his home as 315 Bigham Street S1256
Death1945
Two Tampa papers of 18 September 1945 report that Julius H. Proeger, 78, of the Lafayette hotel, a Tampa resident for 19 years, had died the day before in a Tampa hospital, survived by his widow, Mrs. Ida P. Proeger, and by two brothers and two sisters. The funeral notice next day gives a Christian Science service and cremation Confirmed S1550. His age, his wife and Tampa all fit, so the obituary is his. It counts two brothers and two sisters, which fits Julius Karl Proeger’s family, but it names none of them and no parent, so by itself it did not settle his parentage; his mother’s obituaries of April 1912 do S1654. A longer notice in a Pittsburgh paper of September 1945, not yet looked for, might name them

Evidence: A FamilySearch family tree and family testimony. Weak or missing: No birth, marriage or death record has been read; c.1879 and 1955 are unsourced. William Leonard Proeger's wife until her death in August 1942 was Anna Blanche Roberts, and his own 1955 death notices name no wife, so a marriage to Jane Bell could only fall between August 1942 and December 1955, and none has been found. Open questions

Open question
⚠️ Not the mother of William Harry Proeger. A family tree and family testimony listed her as his mother S24, but his own sworn 1932 Ohio licence application gives his mother's maiden name as Anna B. Roberts S144, and Anna Blanche was William Leonard's wife until she died in August 1942 S1175. William Harry's mother is Anna Blanche Roberts.
Open question
⚠️ Hold on the marriage. William Leonard's death notices of 15 and 16 December 1955 list his children and sisters and name no wife S1176S1177. She stays on the record only as a possible later wife, until a Los Angeles County marriage record of 1942–1955 turns up.

Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the obituaries were read as machine-read text, not from the page images; her marriage is known from an index entry only, below, and no birth record of hers has been read, so her birth year is not known and none is entered; her death notice, below, does not name her parents; her husband’s name and their 1901 marriage, below, are probable. The marriage licence itself, which may name her parents, would settle it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Her husband was probably Richard P. Benjes of Baltimore. Evidence: the 1910 census of Baltimore, Ward 8, has Richard Benjes, 31, with his wife Minnie W., 31, born in Pennsylvania of German-born parents, married 8 years; the 1920 census, Ward 4, has Richard P. Benjes, 41, and his wife Minnie, 41 S1665. What is weak or missing: both were read from the index only, and neither census gives this Minnie’s maiden name; his 1951 death notice, below, has since given it as Proeger. He was added to the family tree on 11 October 2026 with no dates and has no card of his own. A marriage index entry of 1901 has since been found; see the next line
Probable
Probable confirm or correct → Her marriage. She probably married Richard Benjes on 28 November 1901 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, under the name Louisa Wilhmina Proeger. Evidence: the index of Pennsylvania marriages has Richard Benjes and Louisa Wilhmina Proeger on that date S1672, which fits “married 8 years” in the 1910 census S1665; Minnie is a common short form of Wilhelmina. What is weak or missing: only the index was read, not the licence, which may name her parents; that Louisa Wilhelmina is this Minnie rests on her surname, her husband’s name and the date. She stays “Minnie” here until the licence is read. Know more? Use “Add to this record”.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
