How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: CONFIRMED as Henry Stein's father — the 1880 census of Justice Precinct 5, Austin County, Texas, which states relationships and was read from the image, lists
Dietrick Stein, 68, widowed, born Saxe-Weimar, as the
father of the head, Henry Stein, 32, a farmer born Saxe-Weimar
S919. The household is the family's Henry: it includes Emma, 5, and William, 8, the Johann Wilhelm Dietrich baptised at New Ulm in 1871 to Heinrich Stein and Maria geb. Emmert, with a Dietrich Stein among the sponsors
S633. Confirmed 28 September 2026
Life in the order the records give it
Census1870
In 1870 FamilySearch's census index has a Dietrich Stein, about 50, born Saxe-Weimar, in Justice Precinct 5, Austin County, with Justin, Bertha, Henry and Caroline Stein, and a Texas voter register has Dedrick Stein, born Germany, registering at New Ulm on 7 August 1867
S920. These are index entries; the 1870 census states no relationships
Birth1812
Born about 1812–1820 in Saxe-Weimar: the censuses disagree, 68 in 1880 and about 50 in 1870. He was a widower by June 1880 and alive then. The family account's birth on 23 November 1820, his death about 1885 at New Ulm and a wife named Anna Barbara are on no record read, and none of them is published here as fact
Census1870
🆕 The 1870 census has now been read from the image. On 17 September 1870, in Precinct 5 of Austin County (P.O. Industry),
Dietrich Stein, 50, a farmer born Saxe-Weimar, headed a household of Justin, 25, Bertha, 19,
Henry, 22, all born Saxe-Weimar, and Caroline, 13, born Texas. There was no wife in the household
Confirmed S1059. The enumerator, Max Meissner, is the one who in 1880 listed him as Henry’s father. His age could also be read as 51. added 29 September 2026

Open questions what is probable, weak or missing — confirm or correct it
Probable
🆕 Probably him in 1860:
D Stein, 45, a farmer born Germany, in the Cat Spring, New Ulm and Industry precinct of Austin County, with
Anna, his wife, 50, born Germany, and children Willie 18, Houston 15,
Henry 13 and Phil 11, born Germany, and a girl Paul[ine], 3, born Texas
Probable confirm or correct → S1016. Evidence: Henry, 13, fits Henry Stein, 32 in 1880, whose father Dietrick lived with him in Austin County
S919, and an age of 45 falls inside his 1812–1820 birth range. Weak: the census gives only the initial D, and names his wife only as Anna. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026
