How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Life in the order the records give it

Family parents, marriages, children, siblings
Marriage1914
Married
Charles W. Ross, about September 1914 (the date still needs a source; certificate 49141 is her daughter's marriage
S502); in 1930 they were in Pittsburgh
S355Marriage1939
🆕 Virginia marriage certificate 49141 is her daughter's:
Katharine Charlotte Ross, born at Beaver Falls, married Robert Brame Yates at Kernstown, Virginia, on 30 December 1939. It names her parents as Charles W. Ross and “Caroline Progger” of Pittsburgh
S502. added 25 September 2026.
Children1915
🆕 Her first child,
Karl Proeger Ross, was born on
14 September 1915 at College Hill, Big Beaver Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. His birth certificate gives his father as Charlie Ross, 35, an assistant auditor born in Indiana, and his mother as Caroline Proeger, 27, born in Pittsburgh
Confirmed S958. Her age there fits a birth in 1888, not 1889. added 29 September 2026
Marriage1880
🆕 Her husband
Charles W. Ross, an accountant born in Indiana on 11 August 1880, died at Latrobe on

Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana, living at the Hotel Loyal, Latrobe, and working for
Stupakoff Ceramic and Mfg. Co.
Confirmed S1045. Oddly, the card was registered by a Luzerne County board at Wyoming, Pennsylvania, not in Westmoreland County; the card does not say why. added 29 September 2026

Generation 5 — the immigrants and the frontier
- S1821910 U.S. Federal Census — the Proeger household, 707 N. St. Clair Street, Pittsburgh Ward 11. Ancestry collection 7884, record 122780201, image
4449845_01104; SD 23, ED 421, sheet 4A, enumerated 16–18 April 1910. Read from the image at full resolution, 22 September 2026. Head entered as "Louis G." Proeger, 66, born Germany, owns the house free; Wilhelmina S., wife, 63, married 44 years, born Germany; L. Walter 29, land surveyor; Gertrude C. 27; Caroline M. 22; a servant. 🔑 Minnie in her last census, two years before her death, with three of her children. ⚠ "Louis G." is the enumerator's name for Julius — the wife, the children and the street identify the household, and Julius is at 711 on the same street in 1920 [S179]. ⚠ The sheet's immigration year for both, 1855, loses to 1865 for Julius ([S179] [S180]); for Minnie it is the only statement and is not adopted. Married 44 years points to 1865/66 and is left open. - S3551930 U.S. Federal Census — Charles W. Ross household, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Ancestry record 48461677. Image examined, read 24 September 2026. Confirmed Charles W. Ross, 49, b. Indiana, salesman of food products, renting at no. 5601; wife Caroline, 42, b. Pa., both parents b. Germany (Württemberg); son Karl P., 14; daughter Katherine, 12. Caroline is Julius Karl Proeger's daughter: her son Karl P. Ross was the informant on her 1958 death certificate, which names Julius as her father. Her age of 42 fits the tree's 1888 birth.
- S502Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records — certificate 49141, 30 December 1939: Katharine Charlotte Ross and Robert Brame Yates. Ancestry record 1527459034. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Confirmed Katharine Charlotte Ross, 21, born Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, married Robert Brame Yates at Kernstown, Virginia; her father Charles W. Ross, her mother “Caroline Progger”, of 923 N. Highland Ave., Pittsburgh. This is the daughter's marriage, not Caroline's. It proves Caroline married Charles W. Ross; the September 1914 date still needs its own source.
- S958Pennsylvania certificate of birth no. 155557 — Karl Proeger Ross, Big Beaver Township (College Hill), Beaver County, 14 September 1915. Ancestry record 155801430. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 24 September 2026. Confirmed Child Karl Proeger Ross, male, first child of his mother, born 14 September 1915 at 2:15 a.m. Father Charlie Ross, of College Hill, 35, born Indiana, assistant auditor; mother, maiden name Caroline Proeger, 27, born Pittsburgh, housewife; one child born, one living. Attended by J. V. Brown, M.D., of Koppel; filed 1 October 1915. Charlie's age is written 35 over 33, so his birth is held at about 1880. Caroline's age, 27, fits her birth on 7 April 1888 and rules out the 1889 on her death certificate. Collection: Pennsylvania, U.S., Birth Certificates, 1906–1917.
- S1036Pennsylvania Certificate of Death no. 101045 — Latrobe, Westmoreland County. Ancestry record 3972827. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 29 September 2026. Confirmed Charles W. Ross, of Ligonier Street, Latrobe, married, husband of Caroline Ross, 55; died 16 November 1942, aged 62; born 11 August 1880, Indiana; accountant; buried Woodlawn, Pittsburgh, 19 November 1942. Parents given as unknown.
- S1045U.S., World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942 (“fourth registration”), serial U 1539 — Local Board No. 1, Luzerne County, Wyoming, Pennsylvania. Ancestry record 1659993. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 29 September 2026. Confirmed Registered 27 April 1942: Charlie W. Ross, 61, of the Hotel Loyal, Latrobe, Westmoreland County; born 11 August 1880 at Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana; employer Stupakoff Ceramic and Mfg. Co., Latrobe; contact Mrs Charlotte Yates, 5802 Rural St., Pittsburgh; 5 ft 9 in, 130 lb, gray eyes and hair. Anomaly: he lived in Westmoreland County but the card was registered and stamped by a Luzerne County board (Wyoming, Pa.); the page does not say why. The birth date matches his 1942 death certificate (S1036).
